Playing Fallout 3, having a blast!!!

Post image

Get it???

Really though, I'm more of a New Vegas guy but the exploration in this game just soothes the soul. Ironic since I'm exploring the decaying remnants of human civilization, but eh.

This game still deserves appreciation for its atmosphere all these years later.

I believe that fallout 3 is the most cohesive vibe of all of them and was the only one that nailed the "living in a wreckage pile" thing in a semi believable way. It had the exact blend in just the right doses. I consider it the best one and even if I played it out it still holds a dear place in my heart.

I did really love how the DC Metro acted as this weird liminal space connecting various hubs on the overworld map

24

u/Ultimate-Flexionator 2d ago

that was a wonderful moody palate cleanser type of feature. cool, dark and creepy. quiet and subterranean.

12

u/Dragon_yum 2d ago

And if you go deep enough you end up in Blackreach

6

u/MycoProTeam 1d ago

Yeah I was quite bummed to discover most of the metro in fallout 4 didn't have interconnectivity. Seems like a waste

6

u/Ultimate-Flexionator 1d ago

fo4 is an aesthetic themed shooting gallery. a lot of it is phoned in, despite the clever bits.

6

u/MycoProTeam 1d ago

I dunno I thought a lot of the indoors environmental design was exceptionally well done, but they went too far towards the whimsical and away from the survival horror aspect imo and lost the vibes. Next one should be more like resident evil šŸ˜‚

20

u/IrritableGourmet 2d ago

The level design is amazing. It has the smallest map of the 3d games, but it feels huge because they use sightlines and pathing to make everything a labyrinth. There are locations I didn't find until my second or third playthrough. Plus it makes it feel like you're actually picking through rubble to get places

11

u/Kitchen-Space6210 2d ago

The DC ruins are the perfect example of that. You can see the Washington Monument from half the map but actually getting there means winding through collapsed buildings, metro tunnels, and rubble piles. It makes the world feel dense instead of just big.

8

u/Marston_vc 2d ago

With over a thousand hours on that game, I’m confident if I loaded it up today and looked around I could find things/little environmental stories I hadn’t caught before. Game is incredible.

1

u/Ultimate-Flexionator 2d ago

That's why I like the A Forest mod for 4. if you close everything up visually, it feels much bigger.

26

u/WrytXander 2d ago

Yeah you describe the feeling pretty well. I was turned off from it years ago because I was just comparing the writing (unfavourably) to New Vegas and Fallout 1/2, but I realized recently that it's very much doing its own thing, and doing it extremely well.

2

u/queasycockles 2d ago

What is it about the writing in NV that you thought was better?

24

u/khinzaw 2d ago

More quests to flesh out the world, more factions to learn about and interact with, more impact to your choices, deeper characters, less obvious morality to actions, etc...

-33

u/queasycockles 2d ago

Yeah, I don't see any of that in that game at all.

Edit: and I don't see how ambiguous morality is better.

22

u/khinzaw 2d ago

Well, I can't show anything to someone keeping their eyes shut.

and I don't see how ambiguous morality is better.

You can't see how needing to meaningfully think about your actions and their consequences is more engaging than a simple binary good/bad choice?

-28

u/queasycockles 2d ago

My eyes aren't shut simply because I don't like what you like.

And I don't think NV provided the complexity you claim.

16

u/khinzaw 2d ago

My eyes aren't shut simply because I don't like what you like.

I don't care if you like FO3 more, that's a perfectly valid choice. Your eyes are shut because you're deliberately refusing to acknowledge that New Vegas has more depth to it.

5

u/lincruste 2d ago

It's pretty obvious, though.

2

u/idLove2RimKara 17h ago

Morality is often ambiguous. People disagree on what is immoral and what isn't

8

u/SleaterK7111 2d ago

I really like the sense in Fallout 3 that humanity is narrowing to a point, and is cannibalising itself in a futile attempt to cling on. None of the other games really go for that angle.

4

u/GrandellReddit 2d ago

I agree completely. I love new Vegas as well, but it didn't quite hit as hard for me as 3 did.

6

u/Ultimate-Flexionator 2d ago

new vegas was half baked. and aspects of it are often looked at with rose colored glasses on top of that. it had the potential to go the distance but never was given enough love. Now people hail it as the jesus of all games, and I just dont get it. it has deep flaws well beyond the jank.

but honestly it got screwed. it should have wound up even more cohesive than 3, and comes damn close even in it's broken state and with the larger flaws as well. I'm a harsh critic but quite love NV and believe it accomplished much anyways. I put it as a parallel, and each brings different strengths to the table.

1

u/Geckobird 1d ago

To be fair FNV was super rushed. They had a very short time to produce the game and had to cut a lot of content out, including post-game content for EACH content ending.

0

u/AHomicidalTelevision 2d ago

its hard to say it got screwed when obsidian signed a contract knowing exactly what they had to work with, and then they tried to do more than they could in the time they were given.

2

u/RADOVEND1 17h ago edited 5h ago

I feel the same. NV is objectively better in many game design aspects but Fallout 3 just had such an enthralling bleak apocalyptic vibe to it and there is value in being a tighter more compact game as well. It sucked me in like no other game ever has

2

u/thommcg 2d ago

Yeah, felt like... well, a wasteland. I remember coming across Oasis & it's like, this is the only nice place I've been to & you can appreciate what life there is there... & then it's back to the wasteland once again.

1

u/Geckobird 1d ago

Meanwhile in Fallout 76 you immediately see trees upon leaving the vault. Only 25 years post-war.

4

u/Marston_vc 2d ago

Only complaint is that it should have been set a couple decades after the bombs fell. The state of the wasteland doesn’t really match well with the fact that it’s ~200 years post apocalypse.

Especially when we already had the NCR in the lore as a counter example.

Otherwise love the game though. Excited for the remaster next October.

4

u/planeforger 1d ago edited 1d ago

I dunno, I felt like it was the least believable game in the series.

Like Fallout 1 is a super grounded game where e.g. Shadee Sands is just a bunch of huts trying to figure out how to make irrigation work and how to fend off raiders. Then Fallout 2 showed the Wasteland develop and modernise and fall back into the old resource wars.

Then...Fallout 3 reset everything weirdly and had everyone just kinda living in ruins and not making any serious attempt to rebuild society. And nothing really made sense, like the town that was made up of toddlers, or the vending machines still having supplies to raid after 200 years, or the big dumb orcs vs the heroic knights. It felt like a videogame level rather than a serious place anyone tried to live in.

Fortunately they got the memo with Fallout 4, which actually featured things like farms and rebuilt settlements.

2

u/SheeleTheMaid 1d ago

Fallout 3 felt like it was ment to be set 80 years after the war, not 200. Using that as headcanon made it more believable.

3

u/dosequisrex 2d ago

I feel the exact same. Can easily name where I was and how it felt the entire time. Captivating storyline, rivaling Red Dead Redemption for my heartstrings at times, and the gameplay was just too notch with the Galaxy News Radio (still have Apple Music playlists of this) and various tracks you could explore.

1

u/RADOVEND1 17h ago

F3 had the best quest in the series to date - the Tenpenny Tower quest about the ghouls. The nasty (but somewhat predictable in retrospect) twist at the end of it must have shocked many pinko players who thought they were making the obvious correct progressive choice.

0

u/The_Kingdom_of_Wewuz 2d ago

the "midcentury style on steroids" look was nailed really well too

75

u/gaflar 2d ago

You monster.

1

u/Kaporalhart 12h ago

For a long while, Fallout 3 was my favourite game. Megaton is the most condensed content zone in the game. With many fleshed out characters, quests, interactions, trading, and can even be your main base if you buy the house. It feels so much better than Fallout 4's diamond city.

I cannot fathom why you'd delete all of this and blow it up.

28

u/sunshinelacrosse 2d ago

A fallout 3 remaster like the Oblivion remaster would go so hard.

16

u/DistinctCellar 2d ago

They’ve confirmed they’re working on that and NV.

9

u/GyattLuvr69 2d ago

I just hope they don’t abandon it like they did with Oblivion

3

u/BodSmith54321 2d ago

I would buy it day 1.

2

u/FatBussyFemboys 2d ago

If they're smart they'd just do that and fnv

3

u/creamed_itsol 17h ago

I would only be interested if it is a remake. I loved f3 and its dlc back in 2009, but I feel just a remaster won't modernise enough for it to feel good to play in current days

1

u/Chimmy_Chonguh 1d ago

I found my way to a school, died almost instantly to Raiders. Good times. The first game I didn't know what to expect.

-3

u/Beckenize 1d ago

like full of bugs and shitty fps ?

42

u/snoopyfive 2d ago

FO3 was the first game I played from the Fallout universe. The only other open-world RPG I had played at the time was Oblivion. FO3 blew my mind. I was always fascinated with post apocalyptic settings (loved The Road in high school), and FO3 really nailed the feeling but with comedic relief so it wasn’t depressing to play.

I actually didn’t like FONV as much on my first play-through because the setting and story didn’t feel as tight. I came to enjoy it more on subsequent play-throughs as the gameplay and RPG elements were much better, but FO3 still takes the cake for the overall setting and feel.

5

u/Old_Play_3925 1d ago

Agreed. But I first played FNV on PS3 and it ran like crap.

1

u/Soyunapina12 1d ago

Tbf the PS3 version of Vegas was extremely broken, even more than the PC and Xbox version. Just as an example the longer you play it the more the game breaks to the point of stop working altogether.

16

u/XxD3bsh 2d ago

Fallout 3's atmosphere is pure awesomeness!

12

u/AnxiousJedi 2d ago

Go back to megaton. It's hilarious!

4

u/WrytXander 2d ago

Oh no I'm scared to go back now

10

u/ozymandieus 2d ago

No definitely do. First playthrough I spared the town. Second time I went through my completed old missions that could in megaton, then I ronbed the armory, killed everyone, and robbed everything I could. Only the children remained alive.. until I hit the switch.

2

u/Aggravating_Fox_8159 2d ago

I bombed it for fun, then just reloaded my save so I didn't feel so bad.

1

u/WrytXander 2d ago

Sounds like the definition of a good time...?

6

u/ozymandieus 2d ago

Well, it was efficient. That's my definition of a good time.

-7

u/queasycockles 2d ago

This is... hilarious to you?

5

u/Darolaho 2d ago

tfw you bomb megaton just to kill Moira but she is the only mother fucker to survive

25

u/Jaborn84 2d ago

I remember this like it was yesterday.... ā˜ŗļø

13

u/greymajority_32 2d ago

That shot of the mushroom cloud looming over the wasteland is pure cinematic dread. The way the light hits the dead landscape makes it feel less like a game and more like an old photograph from a future that shouldn't exist. I spent way too many hours just walking through empty metro tunnels, soaking in that kind of atmosphere. New Vegas has the writing and the factions, but Fallout 3 has this weight to its silence that's hard to shake.

2

u/Jaborn84 2d ago

Poetic 😁

2

u/Scruffy_Nerf_Hoarder 2d ago

That is an amazing response from an account that's four days old.

0

u/Jaborn84 2d ago

Actually I am 7 years on Reddit. I deleted it because of a personal reason and I’ve started over with a new account šŸ˜…

0

u/NeukbareNaomi 17h ago

Whats with the gate keeping? New users are not allowed to join reddit? Speaking like people aren't forced to start over on reddit sometimes due to shadow bans or suspensions or lost passwords...

2

u/Nesman64 2d ago

I made a copy of my save point here because I knew I'd be upgrading my tv in a few months and wanted to see it in HD.

25

u/emorej1 2d ago

damn, you're evil.

27

u/nthpwr 2d ago

i know what you are.

8

u/Expensive_Luck4194 1d ago

the exploration in 3 really is something else. new vegas has the better writing for me but nothing beats that first walk out of the vault

4

u/hotlavatube 2d ago

Looks like you're having a mega-ton of fun!

1

u/PsyButCool 2d ago

waaaargh it hurts - take my upvote! šŸ˜‚

4

u/ShutUpAboutCanon 2d ago

Classic blast haver behaviour

4

u/He_is_Spartacus 2d ago

I'm at the very start (10 hours in) of a new playthrough, on the Steam Deck. First time I've played it for nigh on 16 years.

I didnt do THAT in previous playthroughs but I had already decided before I even booted it up that this time, I'm totally going to do it!

6

u/DarkMatterM4 2d ago

If you're not too attached to your save, I highly suggest restarting with Tale of Two Wastelands. It combines Fallout 3 and New Vegas (plus the DLCs from both games) into one huge game with in-universe traveling between the Capital Wasteland and the Mojave Wasteland. You keep the same character. The game runs using New Vegas as a base, so you get all of the New Vegas improvements in Fallout 3. It's fantastic and easily offers 300+ hours of content (even more once you start adding mods).

2

u/Kobin24 2d ago

Would you recommend this as someone who hasn’t played a single fallout game but was planning on starting a playthrough the series in the future?

2

u/sQueezedhe 2d ago

How overwhelmed do you want to be by your fun?

2

u/DarkMatterM4 2d ago

Honestly, no. Although it can be enjoyed as a first time playthrough, you will break some of the balancing in both games. It will effectively make one of the games too easy. The mod recommends Fallout 3 as a starting point, so your playthrough of New Vegas is going to be considerably easier than it normally would be. There are mods to reduce how much XP you gain, but that will have the opposite effect of making your Fallout 3 playthrough much harder. If that's something that you think won't bother you, by all means play Tale of Two Wastelands first. Just keep in mind that a lot of New Vegas' charm comes from the initial struggle of being low level.

2

u/He_is_Spartacus 2d ago

300+ hours

Yeah that's a No from me dog. I played through New Vegas just last year, on the XBox. That was cool, just want to do the same with Fallout 3. Plus, I'm old.

In any other timeline though, that's exactly what I'd be doing!

1

u/DarkMatterM4 2d ago

You can stay in Fallout 3 while retaining all the improvements from New Vegas if you want.

2

u/WrytXander 2d ago

Have fun watching the fireworks!!!

3

u/djfishfingers 2d ago

Why haven't more studios put together post-apocolyptic RPGs?

2

u/BodSmith54321 2d ago edited 2d ago

Atomfall is a recent one. I loved Wasteland 2. Could not get into the first one for some reason. Death Stranding is another.

1

u/sixtoebandit 1d ago

I’ve tried beating death stranding over the past year but I will put it down frequently because it gets repetitive. I do want to play the second one but feel like I have to beat the first one before doing that.

1

u/zandariii 1d ago

Nah, save yourself the trouble if you don't like the first one. There's plenty of recap in the 2nd one

2

u/Soyunapina12 1d ago

Mostly due to the scope and expectations Fallout has made in the genre. It's already hard to meet the precedents made by Bethesda, Obsidian, and Black Isle, let alone to be good enough to stand out to gather a sizeable following and sales.

1

u/Old_Play_3925 1d ago

Atomrpg is great

1

u/Psudodrake 14h ago

Atomfall is mentioned later in these comments.

Also check out the Metro and Stalker series.

A 3rd party group made a mod that sits on Fallout 4 called Fallout London

3

u/GNM20 13h ago

I don't think the Metro games are what you would call RPGs.

4

u/Cuddlehead PC 2d ago

Is... Is that Megaton?

5

u/CrustyAmoeba 2d ago

The worst bit of fallout 3s exploration is the metro system. Trying to get to certain places is brutal. First time you go down is fine, its almost like a horror game. But the novelty wares off when your looking at ur mini map not knowing what direction to go make it to your quest marker.

2

u/ShellfishJelloFarts 2d ago

Dude just get the skin mask

3

u/CrustyAmoeba 2d ago

Wow I never knew about the mask. Thats cool. I didnt mean the enemys tho. I meant just getting to the locations is tedius after a while to unlock specific fast travel spots

1

u/Geckobird 1d ago

I almost returned the game on my first playthrough because I got hopelessly lost in the first tunnel on the way to GNR lmao

2

u/fenikz13 2d ago

first playthough not knowing that my choices actually have consequences in a game, ya sure blow em up...BOOM...oh shit oops

2

u/FumeOwl 2d ago

Don't forget the Todd Howard demo special, aka. pickpocketing an npc and placing a grenade in their inventory.

2

u/osi_layer_one 2d ago

my blood curdles every time i think about this game and gfwl...

2

u/No1Barang 2d ago

Last year I replayed FO3 and NV and I really wish someone could take over the engine and just churn out new Fallouts every year or two. Fallout New York, Fallout Chicago, Fallout Atlanta etc etc

2

u/DRSapca 20h ago

That's one Megaton of blast right there.

4

u/queasycockles 2d ago

I vastly prefer 3 over NV. I don't understand the appeal of Vegas, the 'wild west' iconography, the Roman empire fetishisation, or the Elvis worship.

Take all that away and what's the appeal? I don't get it. I can only assume people love that shit and that's why everyone insists it's the best. It just fell flat for me in every regard.

18

u/Marston_vc 2d ago

FO3 is a great game and I love it. But almost all the quests are ā€œbe the good guyā€ (you choose this 90% of the time). Or ā€œbe the cartoonishly bad guyā€ like the guy in this post. It has 30 named quests and pretty much all of them follow this format. Your decision amounting to a meaningless karma hit/plus and very few of the quests actually having meaningful impacts that you see in the world.

FNV has ~100 named quests and the majority of them have morally ambiguous decisions that impact how the factions view you and often have larger impacts throughout the world you’ll encounter.

It also has 4 major endings to fallout 3’s 1. And FNV has stronger rpg ties in the sense that your choices can gate you out of other quests and it’s nearly impossible to have a ā€œperfectā€ character without serious preparation/intentionality.

TLDR there is a TON of reasons why people like FNV beyond just the ā€œwestern flavorā€. If anything, the fact it’s more of a western is one of the only consistent criticisms I see about that game.

1

u/throwaway11100217 15h ago

I also love FO3 more than NV, but this take here is correct. Playing NV on release I was blown away by how much I felt I could take my own path, that is until I tried to take over House's robot army to use in conjunction with the NCR to finally defeat Caesar's Legion, only for the NCR to tell me they would become my enemy if I continued. Still mad that I couldn't lead the robot army AND be apart of the NCR.

9

u/WrytXander 2d ago

I don't love any of those things, and in fact actively dislike most of them as you state them. I just like the writing and the depth of roleplaying opportunities.

-4

u/queasycockles 2d ago

I don't understand what's to like about either here. What did you like about the writing? How was it deeper than the other games? I thought it was contrived nonsense with stupid factions.

5

u/WrytXander 2d ago

Man why did you reply to every single comment I made about NV?

It's not something I can explain to you if you don't already have a preference for literature and/or games that put focus on their writing. You're free to think it's contrived or stupid, though in that case I question why you're playing a pointedly satirical work of speculative fiction in the first place.

-14

u/queasycockles 2d ago

No I'm not asking you to explain why good writing is important. I'm trying to understand how in god's green earth you think THAT was good writing.

6

u/Davinator_ 2d ago edited 2d ago

Just drop it lmao. You commenting on every one of OP’s comments in this thread is a bit excessive.

-9

u/queasycockles 2d ago

So no one can explain why it's such a good game. Rad.

12

u/djsupertruper 2d ago

this isn’t a debate post and nobody owes you the time spent explaining anything, especially when you’re clearly fishing for an argument

7

u/madokamywifi 2d ago

Tell me, why do you think Fallout 3 writing is better?

-2

u/queasycockles 2d ago

I didn't say I did, but your character has a real story to care about. Not just this blank "uh, you're a courier or some shit" thing. You knew exactly who you were and what your goals were and they mattered to the character. In New Vegas there's zero personal connection to anything or anyone. I just don't care about anything I'm asked to do. None of the NPCs are interesting. All the factions are lame and kind of hateful.

4

u/Marston_vc 2d ago

Many people who like ā€œRPGsā€ don’t care for basic stories like FO3’s.

The strength of the FNV’s start is that the character’s story is almost entirely yours. It’s intentional that the character introduced as a nameless courier with no background.

2

u/StevieTheAussie92 2d ago

What you didn’t like Perfect Dark?

4

u/nitram20 2d ago

I too preferred the map and the survival, post apocolyptic theme of F3. It felt like there was a lot at stake and exploring a ruined DC was awesome.

NV meanwhile felt empty and boring. Vegas itself was a bit of a letdown.

On the other hand you can't deny that NV is the superior RPG.

0

u/queasycockles 2d ago

I don't really understand how it was superior in that regard, tbh.

3

u/nitram20 2d ago edited 2d ago

More complex, overlapping quests, more choices, more quests, more collectibles, your skills mattered more, you had survival mode, casinos. The plot was also more interesting (albeit lower stakes) and more varied with more interesting characters and fleshed out followers/follower system. I mean name me a follower in F3 other than Fawkes? In F3 you also couldn't even continue playing after the ending until Broken Steel came out, and the whole thing kind of made no sense anyway what with Fawkes telling you that it's your "destiny" or whatever. Also how did Colonel Autumn get into the vault which was surrounded by extreme radiation? How did he survive then get out of Project Purity?

There were also no factions to join, no reputation system. I have to give balls to Obsidian for letting us join the "evil" faction even.

Plus it kind of continued and relied more on the old fallout games. People still give shit to Bethesda about the Super Mutants on the East Coast for example.

The DLCs were also better. In F3 Operation Anchorage was just a long, boring corridor shooter with barely any RPG to it,

Zeta had more stuff to it but it was still a linear corridor shooter except this time it was aliens.

Broken Steel continued the main story and you could continue after the ending and see how your decisions affected the world so that was cool.

The Pitt was alright.

Only Point Lookout was "open world".

Meanwhile, NV had Old World Blues and Honest Hearts as open world, and Dead Money and Lonesome Road as a pretty good narrative/plot driven DLC that kind of tied into the main game and were referenced throughout.

I would consider these superior RPG elements. But like i said, F3 has a better atmosphere and gives off the whole end of the world, futuristic post apocalypse survival feeling much better than New Vegas, where you see the ruins of a once great civilization destroyed by the atomic bombs and desperate raiders, slavers, and people trying to survive in a hellish wasteland with no clean water or food. Also the vaults were cooler in F3 i think. NV unfortunately doesnt have much of this except maybe in the background of Lonesome Road and the vaults kind of take a backstage which was dissapointing.

Neither games are perfect, however i feel like F3 is much more crude and very simplistic in the end. At the time though it was groundbreaking.

1

u/CheapScientist06 2d ago

I'm in the same boat, for years people have acted like NV is the 2nd coming or something but it's just fine imo.

3s atmosphere just fits the apocalyptic scenario so well. New Vegas just feels like a trip to normal Vegas

-3

u/gswkillinit 2d ago

Initially both critics and gamers vastly preferred 3 to NV. 3 was critically acclaimed and reigned in a lot of new Fallout fans (me included) while NV was criticized at launch for a lot of bugs which overshadowed the good parts of the game. So the general sentiment was that 3 was the better game.

Around 2017 or so is when NV’s reputation shifted dramatically when someone on YouTube made a video about why NV is better than 3, then another video popped up about the flaws of 3, then people started to jump on the 3 sucks bandwagon and here we are today. I like both games, but people definitely glaze NV and apparently 3 is a bad game to a lot of those glazers. It’s like both games can’t have their own reasons for being a good game.

I also noticed that around the time the show came out, newcomers would say they were told to start with NV, then F4, and 3 was just dismissed entirely which is unfortunate. I absolutely prefer 3 as someone who loves to explore open worlds. NV is very good when you play it the way it’s designed too, but it’s open world exploration sucks a lot which is a huge miss for me.

1

u/Soyunapina12 1d ago

Fallout 3 and 4 were dismissed entirely.

Ironically enough, those two are the best way for a new comer to start, specially 4. NV kinda assumes you have played at the very least 3 and have somewhat of an idea of Fallout 1 and 2 and their events. Meanwhile 3 and 4 are completely independent from each other and every other game from the saga beyond some minor references here and there.

It's like recommending someone who wants to begin reading Middle Earth books to start by reading the Simarillion: tecnically it's possible, but there are far better options there to start with.

1

u/BodSmith54321 2d ago

Thereason I hear most is, the main quest in FO3 sucks and NV has actually choices. Both true but I still like FO 3 more. The travel path in NV is somewhat linear compared to FO3.

1

u/Soyunapina12 1d ago

The problem with NV is that it's rather "scripted" to follow a certain path and route for the player all the way to the strip. Sure you can tecnically go to Vegas inmediatly after the intro, but 2 of it's three routes are guarded by strong enemies that make it impossible for players to pass through. (Or at least normally, not taking into account meta ways to pass them.)

There's also the fact that most locations are empty or uninteresting and somewhat random beyond the ones controlled by factions. Most of them are random shacks in the middle of nowhere with nothing on them or literally a bunch of junk in the middle of the road.

1

u/lifeintraining 2d ago

I generally agree, but I did replay NV again several years after its release and understood the appeal. Something about the world felt a bit more vibrant and lived in. Much of the content was also interesting and engaging.

1

u/lugitik_ 2d ago

If you've ever seen or played the original two Fallouts then you can roughly equate the styles of 3 and NV to those respectively. F1 was about crawling out of your vault, discovering what remains of humanity after the war all the while trying to save your home and ultimately the world while F2 explored how surviving factions have started to evolve beyond the point of mere survival and actually thrive, giving rise to nations and inevitably conflicts.

1

u/NeukbareNaomi 17h ago

Much bigger weapon and armor variety in Vegas, bigger main quest

1

New Vegas is the real Fallout 3.

That's not hyperbole, it's heavily based on the design documents for Van Buren, Black Isle's unfinished Fallout 3. Obsidian was founded by ex Black Isle devs, so it's not surprising.

2

u/queasycockles 2d ago

Wait. From the comments I'm gathering this is what happens when you blow up Megaton? I've never made that choice.

5

u/FyouinyourA 2d ago

I had like 10 playthroughs where I always saved megaton and finally just to see what it’s like I didn’t and felt horrible lol same with the whole ten penny tower quest line

1

u/queasycockles 2d ago

Lol I'd feel horrible too. I just can't play like that. I have to use mods on Skyrim to make the thieves guild and assassin's guild less evil. 😬

2

u/sirmaxedalot 2d ago

Fuck Megaton. Tenpenny Tower all day.

1

u/Und3adShr3d 2d ago

I appreciate a good pun

1

u/Scrubs137 2d ago

1

1

Looks like a nuclear blast!

1

u/Sir_Ultima_Omega 2d ago

You monster.

1

u/Vlaed 2d ago

I happened on Fallout 3 having the Blockbuster game rental in the summer of 2009. I had heard of it but didn't know anything about it. The box just looked cool. So many fun memories. The game captured my attention like few games had before.

u/Ltbest 2d ago

Poor Megaton

1

u/Catty_C PC 2d ago

I've been playing Fallout 3 for weeks, currently am doing Broken Steel at the moment. I think the guns have way too low durability especially the Sniper Rifle and Combat Shotgun which are the best guns in the game.

1

u/BlackTree78910 2d ago

I can not wait for the remaster!

1

u/Rhym3z_Official 2d ago

Enjoy. Best one by far

1

u/PopeUnderTheMountain 2d ago

ā€œThe citizens of Megaton will remember that.ā€

1

u/JJ0428 2d ago

Jealous. Wish I could play this for the first time again. Amazing vibe. So much nostalgia in this for me. Still revisit every 2-3 years.

1

u/ovaflowa 2d ago

Omg a remaster!?

1

u/DroneThorax 2d ago

Admins send Feral Ghoul Reavers to this persons location

1

hehe megatown goes boom lol who cares

1

u/OtherwisePower1355 2d ago

Well there goes Megaton...

1

u/Josh_Brandon 2d ago

This reminds me of modding the game as a kid to shoot a bunch of nukes from a gun, good game.

1

u/Play4leftovers 2d ago

I'm nuclear, I'm wild
I'm breaking up inside
A heart of broken glass
Defiled
Deep inside
The abandoned child

u/LauraTFem 2d ago

You monster

1

u/adeadfetus 2d ago

Literally all Bethesda had to do was make more like this.

1

u/_Gravitas_ 2d ago

I just started playing 3 and NV again with Tale of Two Wastelands and Nuclear Sunset. It lets you play 3 with all the NV improvements, with both in one game, and then adds 1600 mods on top of it.

1

u/CivQhore 2d ago

If the remaster is just a tale of two wastelands and 3 and NV stitched together I would be so happy.

1

u/Sudden_Shelter1316 2d ago

For me, Fallout 3 was the embodiment of that one meme:

"You start a game" 😐

"It doesn't immediately hit for you so you put it down for 4 months" šŸ˜”

"You come back to it" 🤨

"You play it for a bit and its the most peak thing you've ever played" šŸ˜

1

u/Darolaho 2d ago

Fallout 3 will always be my go to game over New Vegas. While NV is a better game story wise and roleplay wise, nothing hits as hard as roaming the capital wasteland

1

u/Starlyns PC 2d ago

I remember so many sleepless nights playing a cracked fallout 3. It wqa fasinating. Then got the dlcs I miss gaming lile that

1

u/TeakForest 1d ago

Fell in LOOOOVE with this game as a kid after my mom let me get it at a pawn shop. I hope its remaster is good

1

u/rustedcrowbar 1d ago

That looks like a megaton of fun.

1

u/Tacol0mpe 1d ago

Dude, spoilers...

1

u/MaulerX 1d ago

No, not like that. Not that kind of blast.

1

1

Fallout 3 is a great game and could use a remake

1

u/SenorDangerwank 1d ago

You monster Frisbee!

1

u/oflameconsumeme 22h ago

"you've lost karma"

1

u/1K_Games 17h ago

I never played any of them much. I spent so much time modding them then I just played to confirm mods worked and would stop playing.

I returned back and used a modpack at the beginning of last year and it was great. I beat it and all of the DLC, I need to finish up NV now. I'm not sure if I'll ever beat 4, it is a much longer game.

1

u/alien_farmer1 2d ago

Best fallout game ever. It is underrated. Dark-horrorish atmosphere was something I couldnt see in other Fallout games.

Only downside was main story is too short. And all interesting quests are hidden and you have to find them all.

4

u/creamed_itsol 17h ago

I completely agree. I played f3 goat edition with the dlc in 2009 and its still the most enthralling game I've ever played, cried when i accidentally finished the main quest prematurely

1

u/HansenTakeASeat 2d ago

Enjoy.

Bethesda games are not for me but glad you're enjoying it

-1

u/Rough-Plum-7267 2d ago

I have only played New Vegas. Multiple times, at that. It’s the perfect game to me. I love it dearly.

Should I finally go ahead and play a modded run of Fallout 3?

3

u/xSpiritOfFire 2d ago

Yea this may be unpopular but I find f3 to be better than NV.

Most my hours are on fallout 4 but that was mostly due to mod compatibility on Xbox lol

4

u/queasycockles 2d ago

I'm completely with you. NV bored me to tears and I do not understand the love.

2

u/WrytXander 2d ago

As long as you don't expect the same amount of role-playing and writing depth, it's a fantastic sandbox to explore and just exist in.

-1

u/queasycockles 2d ago

What depth? I really don't understand this.

1

u/FunWolverine5349 1d ago

FNV is better for one playthrough. FO3 is better for dozens. FNV relies on its story while FO3 basically is the best of Bethesda's "just go and explore" style when they were at their peak. FO3 vs Skyrim is partly personal preference, but both are the best at that style and probably won't be replicated.

1

u/mcdougall57 2d ago

To be honest the only mods it needs is the one that removes the crappy colour filter and the one that fixes ADS.

1

u/SteveCastGames 2d ago

Adds ads, not fixes it.

0

u/ElRoboBandit 2d ago

I'm sure glad that's the last I'll be seeing of that annoying Moira character!
(clueless)

-4

u/LegalGerman 2d ago

FO3 is absolute trash. Terrible world-design, unbelievable stupid writing and characters. The Game just makes no fucking sense, its a random Theme-Park instead of a believable world.
