PC Returning Gamer Looking for RPG on Steam Deck

I'm trying to get back into gaming after a long hiatus and only have a Steam Deck to play games on. As a long-time RPG player, I'm hoping to find an RPG to get lost in for a long time, but which also plays smoothly on the Deck.

To give you an impression of my tastes, the (MMO)RPGs I've played the most are Guild Wars, WoW, TES, Dragon Age, all Souls games.

I also love CRPGs, but I find that most of them (like Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale, Pillars of Eternity) are simply not playable on the Steam Deck, because the controls are too reliant on keyboard and mouse. RPGs that are tailored to a controller scheme are therefore a must for me.

Could you please throw some recommendations my way? I've not gamed in such a long time that I've undoubtedly missed a lot of great titles (indie or otherwise), and I find that Steam tends to show only the most recent/popular.

Required:

  • Plays smoothly on the Steam Deck
  • No tinkering or modding required to play
  • Great story/lore
  • No steep learning curve
  • Fun combat (either action, or turn-based)

Preferred:

  • Fantasy or medieval setting, though also open to dystopian
  • Open to JRPGs, though I prefer Western titles

What I've already tried/played:

  • Oblivion (already know it inside out)
  • Skyrim (idem ditto)
  • Divinity: Original Sin 2 (great game, but the writing was just a bit too childish for my taste)
  • Dragon Age: Origins (probably one of my favorites ever, but couldn't get the controls to work on the Deck)
  • Drova (I know it's inspired by Gothic, but the learning curve was just too steep for me and the combat too clunky)
  • Path of Exile (same as Diablo, these ARPGs are just nothing but mindless killing and looting to me)
  • Disco Elysium (despite being an avid reader, I was bored too quickly)
  • Kingdom Come: Deliverance (loved the story and setting, but the 'realistic' combat made me give up on it)
  • Sekiro (the only From Software game I've not been able to finish due to combat difficulty)
  • Octopath Traveller 2 (started out great, but I thought it got a bit too repetitive and shallow after a while)

Any recommendations will be much appreciated! Thanks in advance.

PC Traveling trader game

Couldn't really find what I'm looking for by googling so maybe this sub will help. Looking for a game where you travel and buy/sell goods in different locations for profit. No combat. Can be any theme, space, old timey ones, anything really but the focus must be on one ship/caravan not setting up multiple routes. Ideally a strategy game. Anything like it? Super niche indies welcome.

Switch Local Coop ARPG with real coop elements

Hey guys,

can you recommend any local coop ARPG with real coop?

I lean nothing like Diablo or Torchlight where coop solely means that you happen to fight the same enemy but kinda everyone on its own.

I miss cooperative skills, mechanics, elements, complementary but really different roles. Something that really requires communication.

Anything like that?

Switch In the hospital, need a good distraction.

I was just abruptly diagnosed with MS, and am currently in the hospital for two weeks. Feeling a lot of anxiety/uncertainty and need something to do besides doomscrolling. Any genre is welcome :) I’m extremely burnt out on Animal Crossing at this time, and I find Pokemon Pokopia too overwhelming right now.

PC Looking for some recommendations for single player games! (Battlefield, Battle Royales and War Thunder-like)

Long story short, I'm looking for games that are similar to Battlefield games, Battle Royales and War Thunder (not exactly as War Thunder, but gameplay-wise, mechanically) but focused primarily in single player, against AI experiences rather than the regular multiplayer. The original post has more info in case you find it useful.

PC Survival game with a taming / monster catching feature

When i was younger i used to play a lot of ark, i loved (and still love) the taming mechanic with just a lot of unique creatures that you can display at your base. When palworld came out, i finally found a game that gave that same kinda feeling.

I am not a really big fan of online gaming in this genre, because i just dont have the time to put into watching my base every 3 seconds in fear of a raid. But after multiple single playthroughs between the 2 games, im just curious if there is something alike.

Does anyone have a suggestion? The most important parts are a nice base building system and tameable creatures.

Thanks in advance!

Playstation Games I can play for my grandkids to watch

So I don’t get to see my grandkids as often as I’d like, so I’ve recorded a couple of playthroughs for them to watch and hear grandpa for posterity. (I’m 70). There’re 5 year old twin boys and an 8 year old girl. So far I’ve recorded the following games on a PS5:

Lil Gater game
Donut County
Omno
Little Orpheus
Epic Mickey Rebrushed
Abzu
Flower
Journey
Unfinished Swan

Looking for suggestions that they would enjoy. Also, anyone know how long YouTube videos stick around? Thanks.

Mobile Recommendations for murder mystery case file games

Hi, so we've been playing a ton of murder mystery case file and escape room games over the past few years (it's been like 600 games so far). Save to say we've seen a lot. And now... we're at the end of what German publishers can offer. We've played them all or well, have them all.

So, we're taking a look beyond German borders. Both of us speak English well enough to play these games so anything that's playable in English is interesting to us.

So far we've imported:

- from the US, "hunt a killer"'s games (and truly they are top notch - only missing like three of their games)

- who killed mia

- cryptic killers (not played them yet though)

Then I've stumbled across

- cases & clues from the UK

- masters of mystery from the UK

Are they any good? If so, how good?

What else is there you can recommend? From the UK, US, other countries... (Also, is there anything from Scandinavia that's playable in English? We loved how cruel the 50clues got and apparently crime novels from Sweden are darker than usual? So maybe your murder mystery games are as well?)

Switch Thoughts on No Mans Sky?

Hey everybody, I was thinking about buying No Mans Sky, but am afraid it may not hold up to what I think it is. Is it genuinely fun and interesting or does ir get repetitive?
I am at a crossroads where I think It might be a sick exploring game where I can always advance upgrading my resources and I love how its constantly getting updated. But on the other hand I also feel like it might be too generic and it ends up being a sandbox game with no purpose whatsoever.
Please help me out

Switch Game recommendations for me

I am currently playing many visual novels like higurashi, Tsukihime, house in Fata Morgana, and more... I am getting now after a few months tired of the genre and want a game for multiple weeks to play through. I like games like jrpgs and open world games where you are active with the world. Examples for that are persona 5 royal and genshin impact. It should also be a game for playstation 4 and Nintendo switch. Any recommendations?

PC I generally don't enjoy the Soulslike format, but Black Myth: Wukong felt like a breath of fresh air. What other games should I check out?

The whole FromSoft catalogue never really clicked with me, so I likely won't play any of those games. Maybe I'll try Elden Ring out again in a few years, but it just doesn't feel good (to me personally). I've played Jedi Fallen Order & Survivor, enjoyed both, and will likely be checking out Khazan soon. What else should I look into?

PC Game recommendations for steam deck while in the hospital?

I'm having surgery soon and I'll be in the hospital for a couple of days, so I'm thinking of bringing my steam deck with me. What games would recommend to kill some time?

Previously Enjoyed Games: Hades, Outer Wilds, Stray, Ori and the Will of the Wisps.

I didn't play all of these games on my steam deck but I had a lot of fun with all of them. Feel free to suggest anything that might not be very similar to any of these games though.

Preferred Genres: Not really anything specific, but I'm not looking for AAA titles. Mostly something I can put down and pick back up when I feel like it/have the time

Budget: I don't want to spend too much. I'm looking for something up to 30$, but I'd be willing to go a bit over budget if it's something good

PC Looking for atmospheric, well-made or "lightning in a bottle" type games

I love games that have a unique/interesting art design and music design that seems to just be different from everything else. I'm flexible on gameplay, doesn't have to be infinitely repayable. I just like games that leave an impact, and those that feel thoroughly crafted by developers.

I know it isn't the most clear so some examples:

Dark Souls: Unique atmosphere and world

Blasphemous: Amazing art style and music design

Metal Gear Solid 1: Good style and detailed characterisation

Terraria Calamity: Good music and art

Undertale: Everything

Sovereign Tower: (Recently played) unique art style and well thought out gameplay

Anyone got any suggestions? Anything at all that comes to mind.

Playstation You guys should give The Finals a try

This is a game that has been under the radar for far too long now. It’s an FPS shooter, but you can destroy EVERYTHING. It is available on all platform. On October 20th it will be getting i’s 12th season and this is the absolute last chance it has for the spotlight before it falls into utter obscurity. It’s free to download, so I’d seriously consider you have a try. Thx.

Here’s the trailer for season 12. See you in… The Finals

Switch “SWITCHED” from Xbox after 17 years. Need game recommendations!

As the title says, I’ve played Xbox pretty much forever. But I have really specific tastes. Never play online or against others, just solo campaigns.

I’ve only ever enjoyed a few specific series: Far Cry, MLB The Show, Grand Theft Auto. And occasionally, I play offline against bots on Black Ops 1 or MWII on my 360. Also, on original Xbox I pretty much only played NFL Street.

That said, you can probably tell, I’ve only really enjoyed games about humans - no sci-fi or fantasy or anime or cartoony things.

What recommendations do you have for me on Switch OLED? I just got one for long flights and work trips. I’ll occasionally play at home on the dock too. The only game I have so far is The Show 24.

Any suggestions are appreciated! Thanks!

PC Looking for deep lore games

As the title suggests, first of all, sorry for my bad English. I'm looking for games where, beyond the main story, the world has a lot of history and lore, like in The Witcher or The Elder Scrolls games.
