Dr. Hakeem Oluseyi’s reaction when he is asked if he smokes weed
524
u/WanderlustFella 14h ago
Love that the answer is yes, but he's trying to figure a way to say yes, but minimalize the amount. Like I can hear him thinking "I only smoke on weekends or only at parties with close friends"

u/ZadockTheHunter 8h ago
I mean, I absolutely get it. I have this reaction when people ask if I drink. Where I live the culture swings pretty wildly from one extreme to the other.
Because depending on the person, just "yes" can mean different things. Someone might take a yes as me saying I am a borderline functioning alcoholic that's getting drunk every night.
When the reality is that my "yes" is more like, "I love a few drinks at a party or on vacation, but in my regular life I'm totalitarian sober 360/365 days in the year, give or take a weekend"

Doctors asking dudes how much they drink.

u/SonovaVondruke 1h ago
“2-3 drinks 3-4 nights a week” is the code for “I’ve been self-medicating for years, but I’d do another drug if it were more readily available.”

u/BHQC 13h ago
Before getting my wisdom teeth removed, doc asked if I did drugs. I answered yes, shamefully (wasn't legal back then).
Doc said: "Alright, I'm gonna give you the good stuff then"

u/allothernamestaken 13h ago
This is why you should always be honest about your drug use with your doctor if there is a question about anesthesia. If he thinks you're drug-naive (especially if you are using opiates at all) and thinks you don't need the "good stuff," you might be in for a real bad time.
51
u/SilentBlizzard1 13h ago
100% agree. I'm in a cannabis legal state. For heavy users with THC built up in their bodies, be 100% honest before getting sedation. There are different methods of sedation, and some are less effective if you have THC in your system. No one, you or medical staff, wants you to wake up in the middle of a procedure.

u/beatenmeat 6h ago
No one, you or medical staff, wants you to wake up in the middle of a procedure.
Can confirm, my doctors were shocked and tried to put me back under for quite a bit until they eventually settled on "I know this sucks but we legally can't give you any more". I ended up having to just power through it and that was the absolute worst experience.
Side note: I don't do drugs other than my prescriptions or drink alcohol. I am actually allergic to weed and naturally immune to opiates so I don't even have that going for me which is a bummer considering I have chronic pain from an accident over a decade ago. Even stuff like morphine literally does nothing, and any time a new doctor gives me a prescription for something like percoset I just kind of sigh because it's a waste of money. I am better off just taking an ibuprofen.
13
u/Princess_Slagathor 12h ago
I will always be honest with my doctor. But that has made it very hard for them to give a shit about my real problems.
Have chronic back pain that makes it impossible to hold a job? Have a lidocaine patch, bitch.
Severe anxiety that makes it impossible to travel, and gives you hypertension? Try some tea, and calm down.
And they still want to judge me for using alcohol to self medicate. While ignoring the fact I've been off heroin for over 15 years. And all this ibuprofen is going to kill my kidneys.
2
u/ClickclickClever 5h ago
Same, pretty much immediately after I mention I'm on methadone it seems to just flip a switch in a low of medical professionals mind. "Oh I don't have to treat this drug addict with any kind of respect". Honestly I barely even consider going to the doctor unless I have a real belief that might die. Otherwise there is a good chance not only will my problem not get solved but I'll get treated like shit in the process while having to spend a stupid amount of money to do it.
That said you should still be honest with doctors about what you're on because they can do fun things like accidentally kill you. If you're not on any medications or have any complications then I would keep an addicts history secret, from everyone honestly not even just the doctor.
5
u/allothernamestaken 12h ago
I assume the lidocaine patch is because of your opiate history? That sucks, but it's probably for the best.
3
u/Princess_Slagathor 7h ago
I'm almost certain that's why. But the thing is, my opioid history is completely undocumented to the medical world. They only know what I've told them.
I never once ended up in an ER because of drugs. Never went there seeking drugs. Never went to rehab. Never used the quit clinics. And quit cold turkey when I was tired of it.
But the biggest bitch is, I'm still not asking for drugs. I'm asking for scans, xrays, something or anything, to find the real problem, and work on a real solution.
And I've gone through 5 GPs trying to get these things, and still get "ibuprofen and patches."
I was born with a bad heart, and I'm pretty sure they're all just betting on me dying, before they have to do anything about it.
3
u/BHQC 13h ago
Very true, always be honest with your doc
And just to add to your point, the "good stuff" he prescribed was indeed opiates, so yeah it could have gone bad if I was already a user.
1
u/allothernamestaken 13h ago edited 13h ago
Oh you're talking about what he prescribed for you after...I meant the stuff to put you out beforehand. If you're being sedated, you may need a higher dose if you're already taking something. You're right though, if you have a history with opiates, the doctor should know that so he doesn't cause a relapse with what he prescribes afterward.
Anthony Kiedis from the Red Hot Chili Peppers supposedly relapsed when a dentist prescribed him tramadol. I don't recall if the story was that the dentist didn't know his history or knew it but thought that it wouldn't cause a problem (stupid assumption). Either way, I don't believe for a second that Anthony didn't see it coming - he knows damn well what tram is.
1
u/BHQC 13h ago
Oh yeah good point, though we don't really sedate for the procedure around here. All I got going in was the acetaminophen and codeine he prescribed (meant for after the op, but he told me to take my first dose before going in) and then some local numbing.
No pain but I still vividly recall everything they did, fun stuff
1
u/allothernamestaken 12h ago
I've had it done both ways and neither was painful, but I always recommend conscious sedation if it's available precisely due to that vivid recall you mention.
I've had most dental procedure you could imagine: root canals, crown, bridges, extractions, a gum graft, a drained abscess...and the most painful part of any of them is the needle administering the novacaine lol.

u/swiftekho 12h ago
My oral surgeon asked in the briefing appointment if I did drugs. I told him I smoked. He told me to hold off on smoking a few days before the surgery but "don't worry, im going to get you as high as I legally can."

u/Heavy_Law9880 11h ago
My friend broke his back and the doctor said no smoking because nicotine is a bone poison. But cannabis is good for your pain so that's fine.

I buy mine at the grocery store. But I suspect you may not be in Canada.
5
u/mongolian_horsecock 5h ago
Lmao they sell it in the grocery store?!
6
u/BiscuitsAndTheMix 5h ago
Well its a kiosk in the grocery store - but yes.
Retail sales are different from province to province and I live in one that has some pretty chill cannabis retail legislation.

u/DrunkenTrom 7h ago
I go to the closest dispensary when my preferred brands go on sale BOGO and stock up. The dispensary is only a 10 minute drive from my house yet I get maybe 20 or so 10 packs of 20mg gummies and keep the extras in a chest freezer. I haven't bought any this year because I accidentally was hoarding over 60 10-packs... Oh, and I live in Michigan.

Order it online before the hemp ban goes into affect. You can get them to your door. Been doing it for a couple years now. Not looking forward to December when the ban is supposed to start

Thank you for that information, I need to quit vaping, chewing gum and wearing patches. But I always come back, until I get a wake up call. So thank you, truly.

Naively I wouldn't expect weed smoke to be any better than tobacco one. Except for the lower typical inhaled quantities maybe (but who's to say you were typical). Nicotine is mostly bad because of the smoke typical users inhale, I don't think it's particularly damaging on its own.
9
u/cdmurray88 7h ago
Nicotine fucks with tissue healing.
"Nicotine functions through nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs), which are expressed in neural and muscular tissue, but also in osteoblasts, osteoclasts, endothelial cells, and mesenchymal stem cells [11]. Activation of these receptors has been shown to alter osteoblast proliferation, induce osteoblast apoptosis, impair angiogenesis, reduce type I collagen expression, and disrupt signaling pathways essential for bone matrix formation and vascular ingrowth [12, 75–79] Nicotine exposure has also been associated with changes in gene expression regulating osteogenic differentiation, mitochondrial oxidative stress, and extracellular matrix signaling in bone-forming cells. These cellular-level effects provide a mechanistic basis for the impaired bone healing and osseointegration observed in experimental models and suggest that nicotine may interfere directly with the biologic processes required for successful recovery after TJA."

u/Facts_pls 7h ago
No smoke is good for you. All of it has potential to cause lung diseases and tar deposits.
But nicotine is a known strong cancerous compound. More importantly, cigarettes have a variety of other industrial compounds added in them so that you get addicted to that one brand.

As a long time smoker I agree. Barring specific carcinogens they surely must be similar, weight to weight. It's still smoke shot straight into the lungs

I told my anesthesiologist that I smoked weed before I had knee surgery, and now 15 years later my chart still says “history of illicit narcotic abuse” so… I dunno maybe I’d still tell the guy responsible for reactivating my brain but my doctor doesn’t need to know shit anymore.
14
u/DoctorBlazes 12h ago
Am anesthesiologist. Please tell us. Also if you secretly ate before surgery.
14
u/HexAvery 12h ago
If my anesthesiologist was named DoctorBlazes I’d tell them the strain and how much I paid for an eighth as well. Maybe ask what they’re doing Saturday afternoon.
7
2
u/Survey_Server 8h ago
If I admitted to getting high before my surgery, how would that affect the way you do your job, as my anesthesiologist? What changes would you make, compared to a non-cannabis user?
2
u/DoctorBlazes 7h ago
If you came in clearly intoxicated, you could potentially have your surgery cancelled. And there are studies showing increased cardiac adverse events if used within 2 hours of surgery. That all being said, in general what we find is that cannabis enjoyers require more anesthetic, and tend to have a lot of secretions.
3
u/Survey_Server 6h ago
in general what we find is that cannabis enjoyers require more anesthetic, and tend to have a lot of secretions.
This is so weird! I'm a redhead as well, so you'd probably have to really put the hammer down 😅
When you say secretions... are we talking like urine and feces, or something else? I do love the thought of it just being a broad thing, like weed just makes people juicier in general
2
u/DoctorBlazes 6h ago
Oral secretions, but juicy actually happens to be my technical term of choice.
30
u/RaptorsNewAlpha 13h ago
It's important that an anesthesiologist knows. For heavy marijuana users, they have to really up the dose.
52
u/___metazeta___ 13h ago
Sure, but it shouldn't be labeled as a "history of illicit narcotics abuse". As cannabis is not a narcotic, not necessarily illicit and probably wasn't being "abused".

u/SmolishPPman 12h ago
Just say that you’re anxious, and you have a history of waking up. They’ll give you more

Fake news
Cannabinoids aren't used in anesthetic and also affect different receptors in the brain.

They'll ask vague questions like if you are sad some days and then put that you are depressed on your file that insurance companies can look at.

Haha yea Doctors and especially nurses are pieces of shit for that.
I have a very rare condition that made me not have my top front teeth (fused to my skull, adult teeth never came in) and I grew up in an area prominent for drug use and i fucking HATED going to a doctor because they would take one look at me and make very incorrect judgements based on my shabby appearance and missing teeth.
One time I got an abscess in my gums because of my dental problems and I had to explain over and over again I had this rare 1 in a million condition and eventually a doctor did come back and give me antibiotics. I'm never looking for pain meds, I tell them every time I'm looking for a solution, not medication. I'm sure it's all over my chart like a toxic warning label and I ALWAYS have to deal with shitholes.
I finally was able to have the reconstructive surgery needed to get implants and a top denture. But I spent years until I found a dentist and oral surgeon who recognized my very rare condition and treated me like a human being for once instead of a freak of nature. Since getting my new teeth everyone treats me differently. People will tell you they don't judge on those things but they're fucking liars. I don't hold it against them, I just wish people would look past what they don't know.
The current way the healthcare system is set-up is extremely fucked up and the whole system needs to be burned and rebuilt
Edit: There, their, they're
6
u/Earl-The-Badger 11h ago
As a person working in that healthcare system, I couldn't agree more. The entire thing is broken.

No, but in my experience they are incredibly dismissive of things that you have to say if you tell them you consume cannabis.

And, you may be restricted to a certain rank of insurance due to it.

I have honestly never heard that but it doesn't surprise me at all. I do know many psychiatrists will not prescribe you stimulant medication until you piss clean which is absolutely unbelievable. The country of freedom has a whole lot less freedom than one would imagine
10
u/BarbequedYeti 13h ago
Milage may vary with that. A large number of doctors still believe the war on drugs propaganda on cannabis.
3
u/EvanTurningTheCorner 10h ago
Can go both ways tho tbh. I live in Oregon. About a third of the adult population of Oregon smokes weed at least occasionally. Source. I freely admit my use to doctors (how can they give me good advice if I'm hiding context from them) and have never had them even comment on it unless it directly relates to the issue, e.g. if I'm recovering from a respiratory illness and they suggest using gummies until it goes away.

I just watched an episode last night and he compared the universe to a bubble and at first NDT didn’t understand but once he explained further he was taken aback by how great of a metaphor it is. Dude is way smarter than he lets on at times lol

It's fun to watch some of the older episodes. Chuck has learned a lot over the years!

Think I watched that too. He was saying theres no beginning or end to a bubble. But, isn’t that true of any enclosed shape? A 2D square has no end or beginning either. Neil is learning comedy at the same time. He added the punchline to Chuck’s joke “Stared so hard the sun set”

i had him as a professor senior year of college. one of the coolest teachers ive ever had. the class was a generic science class option most ppl had to take for unrelated degrees and he knew it. i think mine was supposed to be about how technology changed over time. he decided he would rather teach the history of astrophysics and astronomy because he knew way more about it and the class was a ton of fun. gave everyone a 100 on midterm because he was out of state. wish i could have taken more classes with him.

I went to a PA in my doctor’s office for a while as my primary care provider while my doctor was out of the country. He looked over my chart and said “as a medical professional, I don’t recommend marijuana recreationally in any form.”
“You’re gonna have to take that up with the MD who prescribed it. He’s your boss, right?”
He didn’t bring that up again.
