Tastes like a non sugar sweetened cream soda. Just awful in my experience.
43
u/corvus7corax 1d ago
There’s some Fresca notes there too and just a soupçon of cheesiness in the bouquet.
31
u/sonic_couth 1d ago
Fabulous. Let’s talk pairings.
29

u/corvus7corax 1d ago edited 1d ago
Maybe a very faintly tomato rosemary focaccia, lightly salted, and a very mild buttery cheese.
The soda is striking in its mild sweetness so it needs other mild flavors to complement and enhance.
And some kind of salty limey tequila chaser shot, to finish after the soda but before the last bite of bread. To exorcise the whole experience.→ More replies (1)12

I'll try it because I hate myself. Had the ramen too. Neither can be as bad as the version of KD made for spoons though. Yuck.

I feel like the US gets too much flack for their food abominations if this is the kind of stuff coming from Canada
42
u/KnightMDK 1d ago
Jones Soda (currently famous for Fallout's Nuka Cola bottle releases), did a thanksgiving edition of its sodas. Cranberry, Pie, Turkey, Stuffing, and Gravy IIRC. I did try some of them, pretty much salty wierdness, except for the Cranberry as you might have guessed.
23
u/commutinator 1d ago
I feel like a really obvious line in the sand for what should be carbonated or not is definitely the boundary between every other flavor and anything that could be considered "savory". I do NOT need effervescent cheese or turkey in my life.
18
u/commutinator 1d ago
The spiritual inverse on the sweet / savory hybrid train would be potato chips. Potato chips do NOT need to be fruit flavoured, for example.

Worst Hallowe'en ever. When I was a kid in the 70's, one year Hostess decided that the world needed the following chip flavours: Orange, Grape, and Root Beer. Everybody was giving these out at Hallowe'en, and they were simply terrible.
I've also heard a comedy sketch that I think was recorded even before that time, it was some British comedy radio program and a guy was in a shop trying to order ice cream flavors like Salt & Vinegar, Smoky Bacon, and other things that would definitely be potato chips and never ice cream, and the clerk finally manages to convince him they simply haven't got ice cream in any of those flavours. So the guy changes his mind and asks for a packet of crisps... Raspberry Ripple.

Kraft-Heinz is an American company. This product is just wrong. I wouldnt touch it regardless, I've never forgiven Heinz for shutting down the Leamington, ON plant.

u/Kamakaziturtle 1d ago edited 1d ago
This is a collaboration with specifically the Canada branch of Kraft, and the soda company making it is Solly's. I'm putting most of the blame on the Canada for this monstrosity.
8
→ More replies (9)12
u/BCProgramming 1d ago
There is no "Canada branch" of Kraft, it's a multinational corporation. It's only in Canada because the Soda company is exclusively Canadian.
As a Canadian on the West Coast however I would like to blame who I always do for things like this, Ontario.
35
10
u/Kamakaziturtle 1d ago
Multinational corporations generally have separate branches that operate in specific regions. Otherwise they wouldn't be multinational and just be a US company. In the case of Kraft-Heinz, they do indeed have a branch thats actively named Kraft Heinz Canada that is headquartered in Toronto. They are the branch that markets it as "KD" compared to the US where it's simply called Kraft Mac & Cheese.

Y'all have no problem claiming Old Dutch potato chips as Canadian but as soon as this abomination comes along the true home of a company matters. /s
Also as far as I know this is only available in Canada. And Americans don't call it Kraft Dinner.

u/plaguedbullets 1d ago
Most Canadians don't either. Just KD, or mac&cheese
Kraft Dinner is streets behindYou have slightly depressed me with the Old Dutch bomb... I did not know. But Minni is a pretty cool state I guess.
12
u/Kamakaziturtle 1d ago
If you are calling it KD then you are just using the abbreviated form of Kraft Dinner lol. The point is that "KD" thing is a Canadian thing, it's not called that elsewhere (just goes by Kraft in the US)

u/tricolorhound 1d ago
If it makes you feel better there is a Canadian HQ and I think all the Canadian chips are made and grown in Canada.
A friend of mine gave me a bag of ketchup chips because they aren't really available in the states and proudly stated they were Old Dutch, the Canadian brand, and I just didn't have the heart to tell her.

Kraft himself was Canadian, and sold a ton of his cheese product back to his home country.
6
u/Dry-Membership8141 1d ago
He was also an American, and he founded his business in Illinois. There's certainly a Canadian connection, but Kraft is and always has been an American company.

u/esoteric_enigma 1d ago
This is like when I found out one of the most popular flavor of potato chips in Canada is ketchup.
29
u/neanderthalman 1d ago
Nothing like it.
Chips are potatoes.
Fries are potatoes.
People put ketchup on fries.
Ketchup chips is as natural a combination as salt & vinegar.
KD cream soda is simply a grotesque idea.

Old Dutch ketchup is the best. For some reason the box with the two bags just hits differently lol
3
u/harleyqueenzel 1d ago
Pretty sure Ketchup is our most eaten flavour in Canada. It's not ketchup in the sense of a squeeze bottle of French's/Heinz. It's more sweet, slightly tangy, with a soft aroma of vinegar. Now we can bare knuckle brawl on the rink on who has the greatest flavour across the larger brands- Lays, Old Dutch, Miss Vickie's, Covered Bridge, PC, Great Value, Compliments, Ruffles, No Name- but yeah, Ketchup chips are the superior chip flavour in Canada.
5
u/Successful_Struggle9 1d ago
I don't even like the flavor but was surprised they didn't have it in the US. Also surprised poutine isn't popular in the US.
8
4
u/esoteric_enigma 1d ago
Lays tried to bring it a few years ago when they were expanding their flavors. I remember for like a year, they had ketchup and all dressed chips in stores.
2
u/igwbuffalo 1d ago
All dressed is wonderful, they need to put it back on the ruffles instead of the normal lays though.

I tried KD soft serve at the Calgary Stampede a few years ago, and it was surprisingly tasty. The vanilla soft serve base was pretty dominant so the cheesiness didn't overpower it.
However, that was ice cream, not soda. I'm still skeptical of this for now.
7
u/Ok_Report1082 1d ago

Parmesan ice cream would be interesting! And yeah, the KD flavour was definitely there, it was just a bit more subtle than I expected.
The ketchup soft serve I tried the next year was NOT good.

Cheese foam is a common topping for bubble tea so it makes some sense as a flavor profile to compliment a sweet base. But this is so not that. :(

This has to be solely marketing for Solly’s. I have never heard of that brand despite being Canadian.

Funny story. I bought some shelf stable milk from Amazon. I use it for recipes that call for a little bit of milk bc I don't drink milk and only need a small amount on occasion.
I used the milk to make Kraft Mac n Cheese, and while I was eating it I wondered why it tasted so funny. It had a sweet taste to it, like vanilla or strawberry flavoring would cause. I looked at the carton and there was a small pink strip where it indicated that it was strawberry flavored.
I had strawberry flavored Kraft Mac n Cheese and it scarred me for months on ever eating Kraft Mac n Cheese again even though I was the idiot that caused the mix-up. Guess I need to look much closer at the little picture on Amazon.
