Hey! It's Stuart Little! 😀

52

u/DocOcApocalypse Jul 15 '26

I was just talking to my homeboy about Stuart little the other day randomly after not having seen it in about 20 years, crazy to see it here

13

u/GamerKitten19 Jul 15 '26

Right? Weird that it suddenly pops up on the nostalgia train, lol.

3

u/alchemy_junkie Jul 16 '26

Did you know Hugh Laurie aka dr house played the dad in Stuart little? That kinds blew my mind.

6

u/Tofuboy Jul 15 '26

It's today! It's today!

4

u/beepbeepimajeep22 Jul 15 '26

Have you ever wondered if the other orphans felt worse that a friggin rat was adopted over them? Also, do you think Stuart would have been adopted if he wasn't a rat? Food for thought.

He needs to turn motion blur and motion smoothing features off. I can see it through this video.

u/IgnasP Jul 15 '26

We've enhanced your viewing experience by making everything blurry and krangled at the same time!

General fuckery should be a legal term

11

u/LOAARR Jul 15 '26

Literally heard the MGS "!" when I saw a krangled in the wild.

I've also been using it outside of PoE subs and people seem to understand it intuitively.

1

u/IgnasP Jul 15 '26

😆 oh god its spreading

5

u/ypsf Jul 15 '26

Hello path of exile gamer! Excited for new league?

2

u/IgnasP Jul 15 '26

Hahah I cant believe krangling got me recognized 😆 I havent followed too much of whats happening even though I have 6k hours in poe. Summers are always super busy for me 🙏 but I'll for sure play when it comes out!

2

u/Onigokko0101 Jul 16 '26

I was also about to respond to that post with "PoE!?!?!?!" but someone beat me to it.

67

u/TheStabbyCyclist Jul 15 '26

Visited my parents and their new TV had it on. They were oblivious to it and somehow didn't notice a difference once I disabled it

58

u/marcellusmartel Jul 15 '26 edited Jul 15 '26

This is something that does vary from person to person. I've found that some people just don't see it.

The smoothing drives me insane, and then it drives me insane a second time around when people say there is "literally no difference" when I turn it off. BUT that's just how it is.

6

u/TheDevilsAdvokaat Jul 15 '26

I;m 64 and my vision is not what it was. Yes, very possibly some people just can;t see it.

1

u/8-Brit Jul 19 '26

A tale as old as TVs have been wide-screen.

How many times have I walked in and seen my mum watching a 4:3 movie stretched to 16:9...

Mum the moon looks like an American football I think that's a sign something is off surely???

18

u/ColonelBelmont Jul 15 '26

I absolutely don't understand how so many people can't see the difference. Like 75% of people I know (whose TVs I have observed). It looks like raw news footage or something, and all motion looks unnatural and jagged. But their brains can't see any difference when I turn that shit off.

5

u/kkpc Jul 15 '26

Most people I know, they buy big TVs (that's basically the default nowadays), and everything is at like 1080 and blurry, sounds like shit, looks like shit. I fix it to use 4k, better audio so it doesn't sound like a tin box piercing my eardrums, and they say they can't tell the difference. I'm convinced people don't actually watch tv, they just use it for background noise while on their phones.

2

u/Sunsparc Jul 15 '26

I'm the family IT guy, so I'm always in charge of setting up any new electronics. Whenever I set up someone's TV, I always turn off any motion smoothing no matter what. They may not notice but I certainly will and it will bother me if I'm watching TV at their house.

20

u/673moto Jul 15 '26

Holy shit ..that's a thing?!

I thought my brain has been been on the fritz ...making me feel like I'm drunk when I watch action movies!!

7

u/marcellusmartel Jul 15 '26

It makes me feel like I'm having a fever dream. Worse, I think some shows or movies have it built in to the filming. So even if you turn it off on the TV, it's still there.

7

u/PurpEL Jul 15 '26

An absolute blight

Dude, have you ever gone to someone's place and their TV is just outright blue? The reds are blue, the greens are blue, the blues are blue, the whites are blue. Everything is just different shades of blue, maybe with a hint of color. Less common now with modern LCDs than with LCDs from the 2000 to 2010 era, but I have still seen it. Sometimes it is wild what people will settle for in terms of picture quality.

7

u/Mottis86 Jul 15 '26

I bet he left those on on purpose for engagement bait.

19

u/ThisIsAitch Jul 15 '26

Nah, just a lot of people don't notice or care.

1

u/Heckard Jul 15 '26

I thought I was the only one!! It's fucking awful, & it seems like most people don't even notice. Some might even prefer it this way, like why??

1

u/pmp22 Jul 15 '26

Maybe most other people actually are NPCs? Sure feels like it some times.

there are only few films on earth with 60+ fps.

You do realize why this is, right? It's not a tech limitation, it's a style choice. 24fps looks more cinematic and, more importantly, is how the director wants the movie to look. For optimal viewing experience, media should always be viewed as the director intended.

On a more personal level: damn u crazy for liking the soap opera effect. Makes big budget blockbusters look like cheap home movies.

3

u/Heckard Jul 15 '26

What's amazing about turning a solid film into liquid? It looks so bad.

2

u/marcellusmartel Jul 15 '26 edited Jul 15 '26

What are you even talking about? These are monitor/tv settings. Motion blur and motion smoothing are independent of frame rate

2

u/wheeler9691 Jul 15 '26

There is software called SVP-4 that will interpolate for you. I've watched a couple movies this way at 120 fps.

u/marcellusmartel Jul 15 '26 edited Jul 15 '26

I play games at fairly high refresh rates I would say I prefer fairly high refresh rates for games. Definitely more for the responsiveness though. Have not used interpretation or what I think you might mean by interpolation (I'm thinking frame gen). Actually I sometimes don't mind a bit of motion smoothing on some games. Depends on implementation. This is definitely something that annoys me way more when it is used on TVs and when it used to view real-life/ non-animated content

u/[deleted] Jul 15 '26

1

u/marcellusmartel Jul 15 '26

Motion blur, which a lot of TV/monitor settings also call motion smoothing. If I interpolation you mean frame gen, I have not used frame gen in games.

I do know that sometimes when people will post videos of gameplay and they will double the frame rate. Those can be hit or miss.

Also just saw a few clips from the movie Gemini man. They were fine I think. Maybe there was a little bit of motion smoothing in one of the clips, but I did not feel like anything was egregious.

u/marcellusmartel Jul 15 '26 edited Jul 15 '26

None of the three clips that I saw had 60 FPS as an option in the quality settings on YouTube. If you have a particular video in mind then please post a link but I do find it odd that you picked this one movie as if it always exists with 60 FPS as a quality settings.

Regardless this thread is not about frame gen. I have only a limited idea on what frame gen really looks like because I haven't seen enough. This is about motion blur and motion smoothing, which are often available as TV / monitor settings. These are complaints I've had since for as long as I've been watching TV, which has been happening since before modern frame generation via interpolation was a thing.

That's not motion blur. It looks different. I do dislike it as well. Not as much as motion blur. Motion blur looks wrong and makes me feel sick. This just looks like it was shot on a smartphone camera with strong eis.

That being said I understand the argument about its "smoothness", and honestly I can see someone liking this interpolated version, whereas I can't really see why anyone likes motion blur.

Still, I don't like this interpolated look compared to the original: It takes away the sense of speed and motion and feels like it's been framed incorrectly. I'm probably not using the correct term there, but...

1

u/JelliedHam Jul 15 '26

Do people actually prefer motion blur aka soap opera mode?

I've always hated it and disable it immediately. Yes sometimes I visit somebody who has it and they don't even know it's a thing. I guess you get used to it?

0

u/Neitzi Jul 16 '26

Motion smoothness yes, my TV forces the content 60fps in that mode.

Perfect for football, nature docs etc, I am a massive pixel peeper too so I don't really get the fuss.

1

u/Sugars_B Jul 15 '26

I actually really like motion smoothing, makes it feel like higher FPS.

-5

u/Nexii801 Jul 15 '26

Some people don't like looking at slideshows

3

u/styx66 Jul 15 '26

Yeah fuck the haters I like it. Especially for camera panning. Always hated that chop (judder). Luckily my new TV can attack only the judder without making the rest of the scene super interpolated, so found a happy medium.

3

u/IgnatiusR Jul 15 '26

Same here. I will still enable filmmaker mode so I can enjoy the frame rate the way the director intended - especially for movies shot on film. But I really believe the smoothness algorithms have improved so much that it's really a better experience for shows that have a lot of wide, panning shots like Planet Earth

1

u/Nexii801 Jul 15 '26

Yeah, I'm fully of the mind that most people don't form their own opinions and just parrot what other people say.

3

u/marcellusmartel Jul 15 '26 edited Jul 15 '26

You might be linking motion blur or motion smoothing (terms I'm using interchangeably) with frame rate (hence you mention slideshow). Those two are not linked. Motion blur/smoothing (as I am referring to it) does not increase your frame rate. It tries to create the "illusion" of increased frame rate by smearing all your frames. So you just end up with the same frame rate, but each frame looks worse.

1

u/Nexii801 Jul 15 '26

I'm not conflating them. And motion blur/smoothing are distinct techniques.

Blur typically refers to some sort of interpolation, with loss of detail.

And smoothing usually refers to BFI.

regardless, the end result is the perception of increased smoothness.

0

u/st-shenanigans Jul 15 '26

Why tf is motion blur coming to TVs now 😭

Its so bad in every application. Your eyes do that shit for you.

125

u/dagchild Jul 15 '26

That’s not POV!

39

u/blues_snoo Jul 15 '26

It's probably the closest to it that I've seen in recent media. He's literally seeing himself in the TV so it's his point of view. A lot of POV these days is mishandled much worse.

7

u/Roupert4 Jul 15 '26

This use of POV is Internet slang. My 8 year old uses "POV' as a slang word and he doesn't even watch Internet videos. In other words, it's already a thing, it's too late to argue about it

39

u/blademak Jul 15 '26

People say Samsung TVs are inferior. I got a Samsung OLED with a matte screen cover so there is almost zero glare. Zero regrets! Amazing picture, and I can watch any time of day without worry of glare.

10

u/JackRyan13 Jul 15 '26

Matte does very well at reducing glare

1

u/bobtheblob6 Jul 15 '26

I got a matte screen protector for my phone. Changed my life. Plus the texture is very satisfying

5

u/FrankenstinksMonster Jul 15 '26

Did you buy a separate matte cover or did the TV come with a matte screen? Matte screens are very difficult for me to find now and I'm still using a 20 year old TV because of it.

7

u/blademak Jul 15 '26

It’s the Samsung S95D that comes with a matte screen. To people’s credit, I will say that when I was standing in Best Buy looking at all the different models of tv, I felt maybe certain other brands had technically nicer picture. With that said, the S95D has an exceptional picture quality for me, and the matte screen makes it a no brainer choice that I would make again instantly if I had to buy a new tv today.

1

u/themayora Jul 17 '26

+1 for yhe S95D... zero regrets! Dark film at mid day in summer... no issues!!

4

u/BringBackBoshi Jul 15 '26

They have some of the worst interfaces. The picture is going to have a little worse clarity, color and contrast with matte.

I love matte though so I get it. Love all of my electronics to be matte whenever possible. Glossy, greasy, reflective and fingerprint covered stuff is bleh.

8

u/blademak Jul 15 '26

I dunno. The tv has a beautiful picture. I have zero complaints.

1

u/sihasihasi Jul 15 '26

IMO, Samsung has the best UI. I've used quite a few others, and they've been absolutely awful in comparison.

1

u/WHYISEVERYTHINGTAKNN Jul 15 '26

I look at the ui for max 60 seconds before I watch whatever I want to watch. it's not that bad. Samsung also has Samsung TV Plus which has a bunch of free random content live. I actually watch things on there occasionally.

1

u/bluemooncommenter Jul 15 '26

Just got the MiniOled cause the guy said it helps with glare...wish I would have known about the matte screen.

1

u/Thebanks1 Jul 16 '26

2x. Also got an anti glare Samsung and it’s amazing for watching tv in our sunny family room.

0

u/_V0gue Jul 15 '26

There is also this crazy invention called curtains.

1

u/blademak Jul 15 '26

I love your confidence in thinking this is a solution.

2

u/_V0gue Jul 15 '26

Glare caused by outside light sources? Yes, the (or a) solution is to eliminate the light sources. Thank you for coming to middle school physics.

2

u/blademak Jul 15 '26

Ok. For the record, we have shades. Still there is too much ambient light. It would be cost ineffective and aesthetically displeasing to place blackout curtains on every window that would be necessary. We would need to turn off any light source in the room which would make navigating the room a nightmare. Or, and this is a big or, we could just get the matte screen tv. Now we have a beautiful home and a tv we can watch at any time of the day. Again, your confidence in knowing all things is astounding. Thank you for your Ted talk. Please disengage. I know I will.

25

u/leonce89 Jul 15 '26

Engagement = money. Just copy others videos and don't read the comments. It's sad.

7

It's the same principle as hearing a joke and then going around retelling it.

Humans are highly mimetic, that's like... our whole thing.

23

16

u/I-am-fun-at-parties Jul 15 '26

You're barking up the wrong tree on this site lol. Reddit thrives on repeating the same old jokes over and over, every time a little worse

6

u/Debatebly Jul 15 '26

Reddit used to be about making subtle references to old jokes on here. But.. yeah, that's mostly gone.

5

u/Vitefish Jul 15 '26

I used to make subtle references to old jokes, but then I took an arrow to the knee.

So I guess they have a point.

3

u/Jazzlike-Lunch5390 Jul 15 '26

Usually a lot worse.

26

u/Chelonate_Chad Jul 15 '26

Are curtains not a thing anymore?

9

u/Expensive_SirEFDA33 Jul 15 '26

Blackout curtains are most certainly the way to go

6

u/Classic_Reply_703 Jul 15 '26

Yes, but also if you want to be frugal and you do more TV-watching than looking out the window in your TV room, I'd recommend static cling window film. I spent like $25 to cover our enormous windows that were right across from our TV and it is working perfectly. No drilling, no debating about placement, you can remove and re-do if it's crooked, it was like 10% of what a good, light-proof curtain setup would have been, no dusting, no extra fabric hanging around our couch. Is it the classiest look? No. Do I watch too much TV? Yes. Do I love being able to watch The X-Files in the daytime now? Also yes.

4

I have a 90 inch screen. Big. Beautiful at night. I live on the 12th floor and that sun even with the curtains down just seems to make it a high reflect mirror.

0

u/mystyz Jul 15 '26

Check your picture settings for a feature called backlight. Turn it up.

1

u/beirch Jul 15 '26

If it's 90" it's likely a cheapo direct LED with trash brightness and anti glare. Most high end models are either 83" (OLED) or 85" or 98" (mini LED).

I don't think I've ever seen a decently speced TV be 90". It's a weird size.

3

u/JonesyOnReddit Jul 15 '26

Ruins the first half of every family movie night during the summer, fucking summer! Have a big ole sliding glass door without curtains/blinds. One day I'll get something for that...

3

u/qpolarbear Jul 15 '26

This happens with cheap TVs. Higher end TVs have better anti glare coatings. This is also why you should never use window cleaner or heavier solvents when cleaning your screen.

9

u/PowderPills Jul 15 '26

Is this why you’d want an OLED?

27

u/S1ayer Jul 15 '26

It's more the screen. You want matte over a glossy screen in a bright environment. You can get OLED in glossy or matte.

3

u/MaxPaynesRxDrugPlan Jul 15 '26

Semi-gloss seems to work well enough too. Last I checked, it seemed like it was getting hard to find quality TVs with anything other than a glossy finish.

The https://www.rtings.com website includes example glare photos in their TV reviews and allows you to search models by their reflective properties.

4

u/PurpEL Jul 15 '26

No you want blinds.

1

u/beirch Jul 15 '26

Or a glossy screen with enough brightness to fight the glare. My glossy mini LED does just fine in a bright room.

1

u/Petraam Jul 15 '26

Glossy is inferior but people like shiny objects

0

u/beirch Jul 15 '26

Glossy is vastly superior for image quality, but the trade-off is glare. A glossy panel with enough brightness mostly fixes that issue.

6

u/PineappleLemur Jul 15 '26

You either buy a grainy matt screw and your picture always looks.. grainy.

Or you get a smooth clear screen and deal with reflections.

Either way, watching in darkness is always a better experience.

OLED just lets you see black as actual black instead of mildly dark grey and in general better colors.

3

u/BringBackBoshi Jul 15 '26

Manufacturers have other tricks they use in the production of high end OLED panels that really help with reflections. They won't beat matte for this but they will have a superior picture for people that care enough.

6

u/herefromyoutube Jul 15 '26

Just FYI OLEDs are worse for bright rooms. They are getting better by the year though.

-5

u/JackRyan13 Jul 15 '26

They have to be very bright rooms for even the worst oled tv to struggle to cut through the light.

1

u/beirch Jul 15 '26

You have no idea what you're talking about. LG's B series were dimmer than a random cheapo direct LED TV up until the last few years.

3

u/wicker_warrior Jul 15 '26

Not really, while high-end OLEDs might handle glare better than low end OLEDs, LED and other LED variants will generally fair better.

Peak brightness helps most in a bright room. The “true black” of OLEDs is more a selling point for picture quality, contrast, HDR, etc.

It was something I looked into when shopping for a new tv as our tv room gets lots of afternoon and evening sun.

1

u/beirch Jul 15 '26

No, this is why you'd want a panel with enough brightness to fight the glare. Usually OLEDs don't get bright enough to do that. Mini LED would be your best bet.

Although some premium OLED models also get pretty bright to the point glare usually isn't an issue. The panel's anti glare coating also plays a part.

4

u/ThirdWorldScientist Jul 15 '26

This is the reason free porn isn’t actually free. Seeing your reflection when the video buffers is the price you pay.

6

u/denovox Jul 15 '26

Why do I look so angry?

2

u/W02T Jul 15 '26

So glad I opted for a matte display. Perhaps the picture quality suffers a little. But, it looks so much better without the glare.

2

u/SunnyApex87 Jul 15 '26

2

u/koala12 Jul 15 '26

5

u/CpuJunky Jul 15 '26

4

u/JackRyan13 Jul 15 '26

1

u/rolfraikou Jul 15 '26

Does anyone make TVs with a fairly aggressive matte coating?

I prefer it on my monitors precisely because it gets rid of glare. I like projectors because they also don't have glare.

But using a projector in a lit room is difficult. And then watching a glossy TV in a lit room is honestly also fairly difficult, but has an edge over the projector.

But a matte one would really solve for me. But I've never seen it, they're always like mirrors.

Anyone know the name of the melody playing in the clip? It's familiar to me but I can't place it and it's lovely.

Get a projector screen. It attaches to my región free blu ray and dvd player and laptop. And I can take the screen down easily. Bam, the end, you’re welcome.
