I am a mother from South Africa reaching out to this community to share my 33-year-old son Jay’s 1-year inpatient recovery journey at Project Purpose (Zebulun Centre).

Ten years ago, our family suffered a devastating tragedy when I lost my eldest son and Jay's brother, Keagan, to suicide. Jay spiraled heavily into addiction to cope with that deep trauma. After a heartbreaking 10-year battle, he finally reached a turning point, broke down, and begged for help. He is safely inside the facility right now!

His counselor just let me know that Jay is settling in beautifully, has a wonderful empathetic nature, and is in a truly positive, grateful headspace. He is working hard on DBT skills to manage his anxiety and tackling his written assignments honestly.

We still have a long road ahead to cover his R12,000 ($685 USD) monthly treatment costs for the full year. If you can find it in your heart to donate or simply hit the share button to help a desperate mother save her only surviving son, it would mean the world to our family.

Four days ago, this fundraiser came to a sudden halt. And while $6,685 changed my immediate situation in ways I genuinely needed, there’s still one pretty big piece left hanging.

First, let me say THANK YOU. Every single person who donated, shared, sent a message or helped get this in front of more people helped me crawl out of an immediate financial hole. I was in serious trouble, and y’all helped me breathe again.

The money helped me get out of extreme debt, cover Ditto’s insurance deductible and replace my car on Saturday. I can get back to work. I have transportation. That is HUGE.

Am I still living in extreme poverty? Absolutely. 😂 But at least I’m not trying to climb out of the hole with a shovel made of wet cardboard anymore.

Here’s what’s still unresolved: I owe my best friend $4,500 for the car that was wrecked.

They helped me when I needed a vehicle, and I need to make that right. I don’t take that generosity lightly, and I don’t want to leave them carrying the cost of this situation.
So I’m asking one more time: can we get this fundraiser moving again?

After months of searching for work without success, Leo has decided to take a brave step: tart a small business of his own. At 57, he wants to work again, earn his own income and regain his independence.

But turning that decision into reality requires resources he simply does not have right now. He needs help covering essential startup costs and the basic expenses that will allow him to keep moving forward while he works to build a source of income.

His daughter, Carito, is also trying to protect her future. She studies Veterinary Medicine and needs support with her educational loan, transportation, food, housing and the practical training required for her degree. I’m not showing my face or sharing my real name because at this point, I’m super embarrassed as to why I’m asking for donations. I have 3 teeth turning black as I can’t afford to go to the dentist. I’m living on my own for the first time in my life. I’m in my late thirties. The reason I can’t afford to go to the dentist is because I struggle daily being able to afford just the basics. And year after year it gets worse. When I thought I would be able to afford to go, my breaks go out, then I needed a full set of tires. This year I’ve had my gas shut off once, my cell phone disconnected twice, and almost a monthly struggle to pay rent. I go at least ten days a month without food, trying to survive.

I know practically everyone is struggling these days but I don’t know what else to do. I’ve already had one tooth extracted due to it being shattered. I know at least one more will be, that is black. The black is quickly rising to the top of my tooth. When I floss the areas of the three blackened teeth, the floss immediately shreds in two. I noticed them turning black when I had my mental health medications increased. I’m not on drugs other than prescriptions, and I do have a job. I’ve gone through my 401k just to barely keep my head above water. It’s seriously been a struggle living alone for the first time and trying to figure everything out. I also got a message from my psychiatrist’s office that if I don’t make a payment, they’ll send it to collections. Which I don’t want to have happen as I do owe the money. And I also don’t want the office to drop me as a patient because I love the doctor I have. I’ve been seeing them for more than a decade. I just desperately need help. Anything at all that you can donate, I would be more than grateful for. Nor would I ever forget. I do have one ask. And that is if you could share this. I’m probably one of very few that doesn’t have social media. I too got consumed with doom scrolling over 15 years ago and decided to delete all social media platforms.
