Replacement Sun Visor Clip

The sun visor clip in my 08 TSX broke a couple months ago when I tried to pull out the visor. Kept meaning to get around to making a replacement and finally did today. I pulled the passenger side off and figured out how it mounts in place, it basically just slots in and rotates to lock itself in, so the geometry was super simple.

Modeled it out in Fusion and did a PLA test print, surprisingly it fit perfect the first try. Made a couple changes for more strength and reprinted it in ASA, so it should last quite a while. Pretty happy with this one, especially since it ended up being a quick model and everything fit first try.

Looks good! These are the small fixes that are truly satisfying.

For sure, learning CAD has been very rewarding. Every time I get in my car i’ll look at this thing and feel a little proud haha

I feel the same way getting into my vehicle and plugging my phone into a docking station that I made for the centre console.

I need exactly this. How do you even go about getting the dimensions for something like thism

Calipers as the other guy said, and in my case I had the original clip on the passenger side I pulled off and used as reference. From there it’s just figuring out what parts are required for making it work and recreating those bits precisely

Yeah but I would need the original piece huh?

i mean yeah, could just remove one of the other ones from your car, or get one from a junkyard, could buy one from autozone and then return it, lots of options.

Might have to give it a go Would petg be good enough?

PETG is usually fine down low in the cabin, but right up against the headliner/windshield is the hottest spot in the car and a visor clip is under constant spring tension when the rod is snapped in. Even if it doesn't outright melt, PETG tends to creep open after a couple hot afternoons until the visor starts popping out over bumps, so ASA or ABS is a lot safer there.

might be, i’ve printed a display enclosure for a trans temp sensor out of petg and it hasn’t melted but it’s mounted low in the car. You could print a long flat test piece and mount it on your ceiling on a hot day and see if it deforms.

I've printed a sun visor clip on petg and it held untill a sunny day, so it could do in a pinch but ASA is where it is, the one I printed in ASA two years ago is still in place.

I need to do exactly the same for my MGB!

Nailing the slot-and-rotate geometry on the first try in Fusion 360 is pure satisfaction! And huge props for printing the final part in ASA—so many people try PLA for car interiors and wonder why it turns into a sad noodle after one sunny afternoon. Looks OEM clean!
