J. Neilson's Secrets of the Forge

Pretty good episode last night. J is smart and funny and it was neat to get some of his behind the scenes takes on the show.

I was surprised they didn't mention anything about his dubbed in "grunts" during the strength tests....haha.

A Tribute and Thank You

i hope this will be allowed. since we discovered this show in it's third year, my wife and i have been very enthusiastic fans. i, for the beauty of the blades and watching them being tested. my wife enjoyed the artistry the smiths put into their work. we eagerly waited for new episodes and re watched favorites while waiting. also happen to live in the same town, sheridan or. as the smith from season 5 episode 30, mortuary sword

my wife of 37 years sadly passed unexpectedly at the beginning of last month. she was 58. i want to thank this show, it's smiths (know a few of you are on here!) and judges (their jokes and pranks!) for bringing us so much joy to look forward to on wednesday nights. will miss watching this show with her by my side.

Special Project by Jonathan Sibley

This may be odd, but I had to share it.

When my father died of cancer, I asked to be given his titanium hip implants after his cremation. I wanted to make jewelry out of them. The funeral director was not surprised. This is apparently a very normal request. I thought that would be the hurdle. What was actually the hard part was finding someone to take on the project. No jeweler wanted to go anywhere near it.

Jonathan Sibley took it in a heartbeat. He was so kind and so thoughtful. I get to have a piece of my dad close to my heart.

This is not a sponsored post. I paid him, not the other way around. Maybe it's weird, but maybe some of you are looking for the same thing and didn't know where to start.

I'd start here.

Recently started thoughts

My partner and I started watching on a whim, and I've been obsessed with this show. We just began season 2, and I wanted to share my thoughts so far:

- love that the final weapons aren't exclusively eurocentric.

- no interpersonal drama among contestants.

- the judges are encouraging, but don't bullshit. They also walk through their reasoning for eliminations and give props for contestants' perseverance.

- very wholesome displays of masculinity, overall good sportsmanship, and generally fantastic emotional regulation, especially for a reality competition show.

- the four contestant format per episode is much more engaging than watching a large cast dwindle all season.

- it is so nice to see the final contestants BEAMING at their finished products.

- the editors don't seem to reward bad behaviour. Contestants that get the most screen time are pretty silly or goofy.

I would love to know others' thoughts on this!

David Baker with a ponytail?

I swear I remember seeing Dave with a ponytail in the early seasons, but my husband says no and I can find no photos on the internet showing one. I know I’m getting old, but I’d really like this to be a thing.

Season Finale tonight

Just saw something from History that said tonight's epissode is a 2-hour season finale.

Although I'm glad we got to see these episodes.......I just wanted more this season. Several lackluster episodes, compilations, and a long break to air Best of Pawn Stars.

Not sure if this is, as they say, it (Blackadder reference), or if there are more episodes in the can for "Season 12".

If this is it, it's mostly been a fun ride following along with the show. I've learned a lot and it definitely has increased my interest in and knowledge of knives, swords, and smithing.

Hungry during Forged in Fire rewatch

I've been rewatching Forged in Fire since it came back on Netflix Canada. Does anyone else get hungry looking at all the meat they cut up during the various tests? It's almost as bad as watching BBQ Showdown!

Ben Abbott vs Jesse Hu vs David Baker vs James Neilson vs Ira Houseweart

I need to see this episode happen before the show ends!

Curious to hear who you guys think would win in that 5 man single elimination showdown. Also give rankings/ratings for these contestants.

I just started watching last week so I will refrain from giving mine since I'm so new to this

Beat the judges should be more fair

I love watching Forged in Fire, but I think it is unfair for contestants to forge a blade or a sword and then face the judge after hours of hammering and forging. I think it is a handicap, and it's unfair. I think once they win a competition, they should be allowed a day to recover before facing the judge, because hours of hammering cause arm fatigue, and the contestant is tired. I think it should be on equal ground for both the contestant and the judges. What do you think?

So I have a question about an episode

I’m trying to remember an episode where someone tries to straighten their blade, Ends up breaking it and the three judges and Wil let off the most recoiling inducing yell, Anyone remember that one?

Is there a technicality with Btn's title?

In the recent episode they introduced Ben as undefeated and all act as such. However wasn't he in fact beaten once in a special? Or does that not count due to it not being a "bear the judges" vs "beat Ben abbot"?

I'm pretty sure I'm not conflating or Mandelaing.

How would David Baker’s testing standards translate to cast steel weapons?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

We’ve all watched David Baker evaluate forged blades on the show for years. He’s also judging a student competition where the weapons are cast instead of forged, then put through similar hard tests.

Here’s a short clip of him in that setting:

Would his usual standards and comments change much when the steel is cast rather than forged? Interested in this community’s take.

Anyone remember these episodes?

So the first one was on the first round. A contestant couldn’t draw out much of a blade shape and it ended just looking like a long paddle. Doug inspects the blade and says along the lines of “ this isn’t a blade it’s more like a Who’s your daddy who’s your daddy” as he paddles an imaginary behind I am not lying.

Another subtle one was last two contestants are going to the durability test and the host comments is front of a large steel lug nut “ To pass this test your blade must survive two licks on this nut”.

I know this is a weird post but I just remembered them

S5E8 - WTF was going on with Liam? Was he cursed by a warlock?

Made knife blade from soft steel, shop fire, burns his arm, breaks his blade in the first test swing and has to remake a new one, then THAT ONE BREAKS TOO? I mean, it feels almost cosmic. Jesus H Christ how many times can this guy get fucked over?

I'm still hoping we get Jesse Hu Vs. Ben Abbott at some point.

I would love it if they did a multi-episode battle between them! Multiple weapons, different styles...

I think it would be a really good battle!

If they allow guest judges, who would you want to see as part of the judges' table?

I think Viggo Mortensen and/or Henry Cavill would be great and so much fun
