Solved: Black Walnut, thank you.

Ontario, Canada. Found wild in forest area. Smells citrusy, a bit like grapefruit with a hint of pine. Skin feels thin. Have yet to cut one open.

I made a lemon balm posset with blackberry coulis, lemon curd, and candied lemon balm leaves using foraged lemon balm and blackberries.

We still have lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) and blackberries around where I am though they are definitely tapering off! I decided to make some lemon posset, which is sweetened cream set by the acidity of lemon juice for what I hope is the last heatwave of the year. I used the cleaned out peels of some Meyer lemons to make the cups for serving these and filled them with the posset which I infused with the foraged lemon balm as well as a coulis made from foraged blackberries and a lemon curd. For garnish, I candied a few lemon balm leaves and used a few edible flower petals from my garden. I included a few photos of the process and the foraged ingredients.

Mushrooms Mushroom in my backyard

I found this mushroom in my backyard and I’m curious what is and if it’s edible since there’s a few more nearby it. I didn’t want to touch it and look under in case it was poisonous to the touch. I’m in southeast Michigan about 25 miles above Detroit and right next to anchor bay in lake saint clair

First time finding this, it’s down the street from my house. Both clusters almost a foot in diameter. Hen of the woods? This gonna be a spot to check now?

Noticed interesting shroomies growing all over logs and stumps here in the woods, southeast Pa. Wondering what to forage and what to leave for the gnomes..

Found two on Sunday and two on Monday, they totaled around 20 pounds together. Managed to total a bit over 10 pounds after processing and making a pie with a pound. Might have some centipede nightmares for a bit. Once those pass I’ll be trying some new mushroom recipes.

Bald cyprus mugolio question

Never made mugolio before but see bald cypress cones can be used. All the trees around here (Texas) still have a lot of green ones that haven't fallen, but given it's mid-October wondering if it wouldn't be better waiting until next year when they emerge?

I’ve heard of giant puffball mushrooms and how they’re delicious but I’ve also heard of people falling seriously ill from eating what they thought was a safe mushroom. The lighting in the second photo makes it seem yellow, but it’s very white and fluffy. Another concern i have is that it appears someone poked it with a stick or something because there’s an unnatural hole on one place but I assume i can just eat around that (if edible, of course)?

Mushrooms COTW Smell?

Hi there!

I recently found what looks to be a chicken of the woods, I just want to confirm one thing about the smell. It doesn’t have gills, was found on a dead oak, has every other ID for a cotw. I just noticed some folks say it has a lemony smell, to me it smells more like anise. Has anyone else experienced this? Thanks!
