Greetings,
This question is getting asked often enough that I figured creating a FAQ post about it was a good idea. In truth, it's nice to be going back to this sort of thing...the last year has been, um, *eventful*.
The question is usually what's in the title, plus some variety of detail - nothing has changed, did the feds change the rules, are my benefits being stolen, and what's it all about anyway?
---
A sudden and sizeable drop in the net benefit amount at the annual (re)certification, or the mid-certification review, is nearly *always* caused by one or more of the following three things. Agencies have different names for the review, but it's essentially the same thing.
1) An income change.
Bear in mind that what we are talking about here is a change in income *from how it was previously determined*, not necessarily you getting some OT hours or something like that. The change from your perspective may have happened months ago, but it's only being applied now for reasons that have to do with change reporting rules. I won't get into that here - just know that what matters here is that the income being used *now* is substantially different from what it was previously.
This can be a number of things - a change in type of income can matter a lot, since some forms of income are not subject to the same deduct I one as others. If your income is within a certain range of the eligibility cutoff, as well, it can mean a disproportionately large drop in the benefit amount, because of how the math works.
2) - There has been a change in who is in the household/which household members are eligible.
Household members aren't always all eligible. This can be citizenship status related, student related, or could be affected by work requirements. Sometimes this is an ABAWD (able bodied adult without dependents), and sometimes it is not.
When a household member is not eligible, *why* they aren't eligible matters a lot. Students, for example, are excluded before their income is counted, where ineligible noncitizens are excluded after.
Generally, if there are no other changes, a newly ineligible household member will drop the benefit amount by about $140.
3) - By **FAR** the most common....a change in deductions, and this is almost always a change specifically in the deduction given for heating/cooling.
Many states previously used a waiver called "Heat & Eat", and due to changes in the law from HR1/BBB, are no longer able to. u/badfordabidness wrote an excellent summary of this [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/foodstamps/comments/1wz9bvq/comment/pecgbjp/?context=3) which I recommend reading.
If there truly are no other changes and the drop is more than $150-200, this one is almost certainly the cause, and it, too, affects heavily how the math works. Deductions for utilities are an assumed amount based on which ones you pay **separately** from the shelter cost.
Heating/cooling is somewhere around $500 that is applied against whatever income you have...losing that, especially if your household income is unearned income like disability or Social Security, is going to drastically affect the net benefit amount.
---
Public assistance is complicated. Please, feel free to ask questions of the experts here...but if your question is this one, read your benefit decision notice carefully, and consult your agency...we'll probably be telling you to do that anyway.
You probably haven't done anything wrong. It may simply be that the agency needs something that they didn't before, such as a utility bill.
Regards,
The mod team š

Howdy.
Some of us in the mod team have been low-key discussing giving the community some of the statistics on How We're Doing - number of posts, amount of mod actions, and so on. Some subreddits do this...most do not, but I think in the interests of community transparency, the time has come. Something I think you'll see here, or at least I hope so, is that when you use the report function, there are results - I know most users here have a pretty good understanding that we moderate actively, but I think there's a benefit to knowing what that actually looks like.
Looking back on the last year - last summer with the passage of HR1/OBBB and the ensuing chaos of the government shutdown and updated Megathreads....I think I'm safe in saying none of us want to do that again. That said, there are other things on the horizon that the well-informed have touched on, and that we've posted from the mod team as we get information. Part of this has to do with the upcoming effects of the changes to payment errors and state matching funds....part of it has to do with the implementation of federal waivers that affect people in unexpected ways....and part of it is just uncertainty.
This is a summary of the last year - August 2025 through July of this year:

And a month by month breakdown of the last year:

I think it's pretty clear what drives our traffic here - this is 100% in line with what I expected to see when I started digging. By way of comparison, here are the last 30 days:

If you were to look at the corresponding actions in post/comment removals from Reddit, and from the mod team, it tends to follow this pattern - I won't post it but there's a significant spike in admin actions on one day in the last month, and I'll let you speculate as to where that is. Hint: It's the obvious one.
But what of moderator actions? What do those mod folks actually do, anyway? They say this subreddit is moderated, but I've never seen it... Well....
When you send us a report, it goes to the queue for removal. We don't remove everything...and in addition to reports there is also an auto-filter that triggers for certain words and word combinations that I won't get into...but we do review all of it. Here's what the last month of reports looks like:

But what about those mod actions I asked about? That's what I want to know!!!!
Well...

Here's the last week's activity, specifically....

So what does this mean? I think it's hard to draw a conclusion from this other than that your comments, your posts, and most of all your reports absolutely have an impact on how this subreddit functions. I find myself saying this often...but please continue to report - we do not always remove, or ban...but we do review everything reported.
That said, I will also point out that we have the ability to snooze reports from users who abuse the report function. I don't find myself doing that very often - most of the time it's in good faith, and I think probably three times out of four, I find myself agreeing with the report. Sometimes we'll remove entire comment chains of additional unreported comments because it's clearly going nowhere good or productive. Every review we do is guided by the subreddit rules, and we try to be as lenient as is prudent. We've also started using the Crowd Control feature on hotly debated posts, which tends to slow things down a little bit - that one got suggested by Reddit last year about this time when we saw that ginormous spike in activity.
To quote u/badfordabidness in my conversation with them just now...here's hoping we don't need a counter of "Last Megathread Since National Crisis" days...but there may be some dark times ahead, and we'll continue doing our best to keep the community informed and focused on productive discussion & information sharing.
Peace,
the Mod Team

So I did my renewal which is due oct 31st and sent all paystubs from September. I just received a letter in the mail asking for August paystubs. Why do I have to send more paystubs if I sent the most recent ones already? Im so confused and kind of annoyed.

Iāve recently received my payment of $306.00, on October 6, and ever since then, my card kept declining, and for some odd reason I wanted to go check and see if my card is working, I went to a local Circle K gas station to see if it works, even though itās already been working in them past months, working at any store, not just Circle K, so itās like why would I do that? And I go to this Circle almost a lot, mostly using a bank card though. The funny thing is⦠itās actually not working, it keeps declining, itās not locked, itās not damaged, and Iām putting in the right pin and it still declines. I was going to purchase something and it declined, and declined a second time, then I went to another Circle K thatās walking distance and same happened there, the next day I tried my local Albertsons, I forgot what it said on the screen at Self-checkout but I think it said ānot authorizedā. What is going on right now?
Oh and I ended up requesting a new card and it came in the mail a couple days ago, same thing is still happening.

Iām wondering what to do next? Iām a student on financial aid + work study. They called me the first time and I was in class. I called back 4-5 times to my assigned office then 2-3 times to the general number and another to like the consumer care line or something like that.
Got another call that was, again, during class. It was outside the window I had put btw. Called another 4-5 times and just saw my application was declined a few days ago. So Iām frustrated. Can never contact anyone and the calls for the interview came in outside of my availability. I get they are probably swamped but itās frustrating when I could really use the help.
what are my next steps? It says I can appeal but what does that look like time investment wise? Should I re-apply again?

So my EBT card with the new chip/tap feature, kept declining at my two local Circle Ks, the next day I went to try again at my local Albertsons at the self-check and it happened there too, so I ended up getting a new replacement card, which came in the the mail two days ago and the same thing is happening. My replacement card, and even my previous wasnāt locked, wasnāt damaged, and Iām putting in the correct pin. I donāt know what else it could be, and my āout-of-stateā transactions has always been locked along with āonlineā transactions. And I even tested my replacement card on DoorDash but it says āyour card has insufficient funds. Try modifying your cart or use another payment methodā. Maybe itās the pin that is the problem, so Now Iām trying get a new pin, using that 9677 number on the back of the card but that AI voice or whatever, isnāt mentioning setting a new pin.

I just got a letter today saying that my CalFresh was discontinued because I "didn't complete the recertification process," which is bull because I filled it out & submitted the day I found out that I was due for it, which was actually that day too (9/30, I did not get a letter or call or anything, talk about cutting it close to the deadline...). I made sure I wasn't missing anything from the form, and submitted all relevant documents (SSI/SSDI benefits, college transcript for proof of enrollment, and FAFSA for proof of that). And yet, I get this letter? Is it because I submitted the recertification the day it was due? It also says on the website that it's been received, but has not been processed.
Does this also mean I can't use my card? I literally needed it this weekend and don't have a lot of food left.
Oh and unrelated but, the website still says I don't have MediCal even though I actually do, and it's been like this for two years now. They told me two years ago that even though it looks like I don't, I do, and not to worry about it since it'd update eventually, but it never did. They also won't change my name for my MediCal even though I literally gave them all the documentation (it's how I have CalFresh under my legal name in the first place, and the gov says they have everything updated for both CalFresh and MediCal????). I had to request a replacement card for my MediCal plan and they wouldn't let me use my legal name.

I used one of those online calculator. I applied and was approved but the amount is quite a bit lower than the calculator. I know we have an expert on this board I just wanted to see what they thought. Here are the figures and facts:
California
2 people
Both over 60
Both are self employed and work well over 20 hours a week.
Make 1,131 ( net expenses from business taken out) a month
Pension of $845 a month
Mortgage $863
Taxes $291
Insurance $369
We have propane and a well and they said all utilities are called rural utilities and we get the max credit. $686?
Medical deduction $75
We were just approved yesterday.
Thank you for any help. Maybe the calculator is wrong.
Edit * I just talked to Gemini and I know ai is sometimes wrong but it suggest based on my benefit that the worker only input my income and no expenses.

Iām extremely grateful for any help I can get, let me say that firstā¦. But Iām really confused. I make around $42k a year before deductions (I work about 5-10 hours of overtime a week)⦠and my rent is $1200 right now⦠I just got approved for food stamps despite being very proud (hate it here) and itās only $81 a month.
I was expecting around $300ish. I have emailed my caseworker to ask if she applied my rent.
My electric is around $150-$175 a month. Gas bill is anywhere from $40 to $250 a month depending on the time of year. Water bill is around $100-$120 a month.
I have provided proof of all of this.
Iām also doing DoorDash on top of my regular pay and yes, I included that in my stuff.
Iām in Virginia.
Does anyone know if maybe something went wrong here? I was also denied help with childcare costs (two youngest kids are in before/after school care and I pay around $800 a month for that out of pocket)

I just wanted to thank all the Expert Redditors who contribute daily and try to help this community answering complex questions regarding this program.
It is much easier for me to surf this subreddit because I am retired now but I admire all of you active eligibility caseworkers who share their time while still dealing with their caseloads, you are admirable!.
I also continuously learn from all of you as well because some aspects of this program varies from state to state.
Thank you again for your service to this community!.
Best wishes ššæ

I applied for benefits about 10 weeks ago in the first week of August. I was approved in early September and about 2 weeks after I received the approval letter I called my caseworker to see why I hadnāt received the card yet. On September 21st my case worker told me she had sent it (again? I donāt know). Now it is October 15th and I still have not received the card. State is North Carolina.
Whatās going on? Is it normal for it to take this long? I was approved for the max benefits because I am poor and I have been going hungry these past few months waiting for this card.

So my income increased to where I no longer meet the requirements for snap anymore. Thatās fine, but when I log in, my case says closed. However it still says I have 3 things āto doā including uploading a statement from my previous job that it ended, as well as proof of my cash value. If my benefits have ended, do I still need to upload this? Or is this just if I wanted to re apply?

So, my husband, son, and I are homeless. I was a writer till fairly recently: seo, marketing articles, podcast show notes. Then AI came along and my work dwindled down to nothing. My husband was a cook, till he took a hard hit to the head a few years back that caused a detached retina in one eye. He lost his vision in that eye.Being partially blind made it hard for him to work on a line in a kitchen, but apparently it's not a disability. It's a really tough job market out there right now, so I drove for Uber and DoorDash as much as I could while applying for other jobs. Then the car broke down, so we lost our place.
Recently we relocated to Tallahassee to stay with some friends. We're sleeping on their couch. About a week after we got here, I had a stroke. That was around 2 months ago. I guess I'm healing decently well, but I still have noticeable aphasia and massive fatigue. Our food stamps are up for renewal and when I filled out the recertification form, I applied for SNAP, TANF, and I asked them to reevaluate my share of cost Medicaid to something that would allow me to get the ongoing care I need. (Speech therapy, meds. My share of cost was $2400 a month.. with no income.)
They asked for so much more stuff than usual. They wanted all our IDs (my son doesn't have one so we gave them a birth certificate. We've been in the system on and off for years so they have all this already.) proof that we're living here, (gave them a letter from the homeowners), proof my son was in school( they have that, but I gave it to them again) and then the workforce registration thing. Fine. My husband told them at the interview that I'm not going to be able to get a job right now because I sound like I'm developmentally disabled because of the aphasia and I am too fatigued to do much right now. And it'll take some time to heal. I gave them all kinds of medical records from the hospital documenting that I just recently had a stroke.
They responded by telling me I had to get a doctor to write a note saying I couldn't work right now. In 10 days.I found one clinic for poor people that could see me that quickly and was told "we don't do that" when I asked about getting a note for the DCF people.
So fine, I sent them a medical authorization form so they can get whatever records they need from this doctor and the hospital. Six months is the time frame I've heard from everyone as the minimum time for stroke recovery. Shouldn't they know that? It's not like the stroke wasn't documented. I can't get speech therapy with the shitty version of Medicaid I have, how am I supposed to meet a work requirement when I can't get the care I need to be able to work again? This wasn't even my first stroke. I've had like 5 over the past 10 years. My brain is largely scar tissue. I've just had minimal enough effects from them to be able to keep working anyway - till now -because medical care is so unaffordable. If it had been affordable at some point I probably wouldn't be in this situation now. I'm pretty sure the state of Florida wants to kill me. I could live with that, I guess, I don't want them to starve my teenager in the process.

Okay so last month I applied for food stamps, it got approved and money was put on my EBT.
However when I go on MY ACCESS account, there was no messages sent to me like normal telling me how much, how long it's good for etc. my case still just says submitted and the new EBTEDGE website doesn't show pending benefits like it used too, it doesn't even show when my money was added last month.
Im just trying to figure out my benefits date, im so lost.

Looking for Missouri Disabled Adult Child (DAC/CDB) beneficiaries who lost SSI and were placed on Medicaid spend-down.
Iām trying to connect with other Missouri residents who previously received SSI, then lost SSI because they began receiving Disabled Adult Child benefits through a parentās Social Security record.
Were you subsequently placed on Medicaid spend-down, charged monthly premiums, or denied Medicaid because your DAC benefits were counted as income?
Federal law, specifically Section 1634(c) of the Social Security Act, provides special Medicaid protections for certain former SSI recipients receiving DAC benefits.
Iām trying to identify whether this is affecting multiple Missourians and bring our experiences to Missouri Protection & Advocacy for possible systemic investigation.
Please comment or message me if this sounds like your situation. No personal documents or identifying information are needed.

I've been previously approved to sep 27 but I don't know if it got lost in the mail or not but I didn't receive my mid approval contact and my benefits this month didn't arrive...
I've checked my local site that I usually do these renewals on and there's no options... What do I do?

Hi all, I'm a reporter for a French news network, and I'm working on a story on how the SNAP eligibility changes, specifically in Arizona, are playing out ahead of the midterms.
I'm looking for someone or a family who lost their SNAP benefits and believes they're still eligible, and who is dealing with the paperwork, the hold times, or the reapplication process. If your situation is a bit different (like taking on extra work to get benefits reinstated), I'd like to hear that too.
If you'd be open to talking, even just to learn more with no commitment, send me a DM. Happy to share info/proof about myself via DM to show legitimacy. Nothing is on camera unless you're comfortable with it. Thank you.

Hello,
I'm new here. I reapplied for snap after being denied on June of this year.
My husband is the only one working, we're a household of 5, do they count gross or net income for a household where there is a disabled minor? I was told gross but I read on the state website there should be a disability exemption (Texas works handbook section B-433). I had transitional medicaid until april 2027 and now it says denied. His income hasn't changed. Should I appeal? This is so stressful.

Starting off, Iām in Alabama and found out recently that Iām pregnant. Technically homeless but my best friend and her husband has been allowing me to stay at their house and I clean and help take care of their son when needed in exchange. They are already on Foodstamps and WIC. I already have health problems so the pregnancy has been rough since the beginning, making even part time work impossible most days. (I usually do deliveries). Since Iām technically not part of their household and not using the same food as them, am I able to apply for my own or do they need add me to theirs? I do already have Medicaid.
The father isnāt in the picture anymore so I have no other financial assistance aside from what little I make doing deliveries. Thatās usually no more than 500 a month if Iām lucky.

Hi everyone! I wanted to ask if anyone else is going through the same thing with SNAP in Indiana. Iāve been waiting almost 3 months for a decision on my renewal. I submitted the last documents they requested on August 25, and I still havenāt received any letters or a decision. Every time I call, they tell me everything is fine and that theyāre just waiting for an authorization, but I still havenāt received my benefits. š Has anyone else experienced this? How long did it take for your case to be approved? Thank you! ā¤ļø

California Hello so my cash benefits were stolen already twice this month my deposit on the third and my replacement this morning at around 1 am. I filed another claim. I went into the office because i got a denial for the $1000 that were taken from me thia second time but then i got an approval for $1140 and another denial. I was concerned so i went in and asked and the worker assured me it was approved even though it shows the denial. Im still worried. Has anyone gone through this?

Georgia resident here. We usually get our benefits on the 5th, and it's now the 14th, with no contact from anyone, no notices, just a "registration pending" status. I submitted all verification on the 23rd of last month, a week before it was due. Last week, I called DHS, and the automated system said there was no caseworker assigned to my case and then hung up on me. I called today, and they sent me to the voicemail of a caseworker. I am so frustrated and hungry. I have a toddler, and she's not picky about food, but her options are dwindling down too. I am on the spectrum, and it is really difficult to get my brain to accept eating food I do not want (I know that sounds very entitled, but it's genuinely how my brain works-- I would rather not eat at all than eat something my brain deems "unsafe." I hate it and have tried for decades to change it). I have no idea what to do. I have avoided food pantries because of my neurodivergence, as I would feel terrible accepting food I know I won't eat. We have WIC, but my toddler's ONE pickiness is about her milk, and WIC does not cover the milk she will drink. Used our last couple dollar last night to get her a half gallon, which will not last past tomorrow. I just don't understand how they can require we renew benefits so frequently without hiring enough caseworkers to actually APPROVE the renewals. To make matters worse, toddler brought back another nasty cold from daycare (our third in under 3 months), and my partner got sent home from work because he was coughing so much. That means he won't be getting paid for the rest of the hours he was supposed to (and WILLING TO) work.
