Discussion TX beginner advice?

Hello, I’m new to fly fishing but have plenty of experience with spinning and baitcasting gear. I’m in Texas and want to get into fly fishing, especially on hiking and camping trips.

I’m looking for advice on a few things:

Travel rods: I keep seeing the REYR FIRST CAST rods and am tempted by the compact design. Are they actually good, or would I be better off with a traditional multi-piece travel rod? I want something durable that packs small enough for a backpack and potentially air travel.

Rod length and weight: What would you recommend for Texas fishing? Mostly lakes and rivers, but occasionally coastal saltwater and bayous. Would a 6wt be a good compromise, or should I consider a 7wt or 8wt?

Beginner-friendly gear: Any recommendations for a reasonably priced rod and reel combo that would work for these conditions?

I'm trying to find a setup that balances portability, durability, and versatility without spending a fortune. I'd appreciate recommendations from people who have actually used their gear for backpacking and fishing in Texas!

Big kids wader suggestions?

9yo son has gotten super into fly fishing and tying. Need to get him some waders. 4’11 and 75 pounds with a men’s 7-8 shoe. Worth biting the bullet on Orvis or simms offerings or anyone have any good experience with the cheaper options?

Not afraid to throw down on better ones if it’s worth it. I remember a lot of wet leaky waders as a kid but don’t want to light money on fire either if I don’t have to since he isn’t going to quit growing.

The latest time of year I’ve fished Alaska. A little cold, and a little slow yet unbelievably beautiful and quiet. All of these were brought in on the swing.

Vuarnet VS Mauijim polarized lenses

Hi everyone, on a recent trip I was able to test 2 polarized sunglasses and I though I would give y'all my review on both, hope it can help some of you.
I alternated between the Vuarnet Racing 01 with polarized lenses and the Maui Jim Keha.

The Racing 01 feels light and streamlined, with a sportier profile that works well when moving between the bank and the water. Its polarized mineral lens kept surface glare in check without making the view feel overly dark. The trade-off is that its coverage is fairly open: in hard side light, I noticed more glare around the edges.

The Keha offers a more enclosed, wraparound fit. It is the pair I would choose for long, exposed stretches of water, where peripheral coverage helps reduce eye fatigue. It feels more fishing-specific, though less understated away from the river.

Neither pair replaces good positioning and patience, but both make reading the water easier. The choice comes down to whether you value a lighter, more versatile frame or greater wraparound coverage.

Discussion Fly Fishing in Brevard, NC

Next weekend I will be traveling to Brevard for a bachelor trip and since I live closer than the rest of the group I will be driving. I am a lower intermediate level fly fisherman but I’d love to get there early and fish for half a day before we check in. Does anyone have any suggestions for accessible locations or tips for fishing these rivers? I saw the Pisgah hatchery has public parking, is that portion of the river a good location? I wish I had the time to scout locations and pinball around but it looks like I will have to pick a spot and fish for a few hours

Thank you gift question

A couple buddies and I won a day at a trout club earlier this year. We’re all complete newbs, and had the whole place to ourselves with the members who donated the day to the raffle.
We had a blast, caught huge fish and are now all hooked so to speak.
I want to thank our host with a gift, and this guys family has been a club member since his grandfather was around so he has all of the real gear he wants. I do leatherwork as a hobby and would love to make him something maybe with the club logo embossed. My first thought is fly wallet, he had a small plastic box he kept with him which he just kept in the golf cart we used to get out to the stream. Any suggestions on something that is useful?

Saw this today on the Raven River Alberta. A snagged nymph in a tree attracted this bat who got hooked on it. Anyone ever seen anything like this? I guess I knew it was possible. 😐

This creek was flowing at 6 CFS, I was still able to get on some terrestrial action in mid October. We desperately need some snowpack for sure for a better season next year.

Discussion Casting streamers from a rocky bank

The bank by my river is a downhill slope where you have to climb down 6-7’ of boulders to be near the water. Immediately behind this bank are a lot of trees.

How exactly do I cast my streamers out to the river without hitting the threes behind me?

Discussion Pattern, size, color or presentation..I dunno

I've been fly fishing longer than most of the people on redditv have been alive. Over those many years, I transitioned from streamers to dry flies to nymphing. In my early years, I experimented by using one fly exclusively for a season. The first time, it was an Adams.. caught lots of fish... next year, it was Hornbergs...fished wet and dry and had amazing success with them in Nevada and California. Next was Royal Wulf.. fabulous for brook trout in Maine. The San Juan changed me into a nymph fisherman. Now I fish nymphs exclusively on all tailgates

I traveled far more in my later years. One year in Wyoming on a 2 week tent camping adventure with my lifelong friend Utah Jim, we were flumexed. There were big fish..the smallest we caught was 14 inches but no small fish. Turns out they had been a massive spring runoff that apparently scrubbed out all the smallish fish, leaving just the big boys. So the big fish had little competition when feeding. They were all fat and well fed, so enticing them to take a fly was a challenge. We both dug deep into our fly boxes to find something different. I did well with Madam X for a few days. We relocated frequently. We were on one creek that produced big fish. I rounded a bend and saw a very large, turned out it was a 22-inch cut, just lazing midstream. He had no interest in anything I tried. Finally, in desperation, I tried a fly that I had tied eons ago in a fly tying class...the bathing suit fly. The instructor gave us thread that was the remnants of his girl fiends last years bathing suit. The brightest colors you've ever seen

He took it on the first drift.

Grumpy Steve and I fished the Swift River in Massachusetts for 15 winters. The upper section below Windsor Dam is catch and release year round. They say the fish can identify 100 flies and tell you who tied it. We discovered it's mostly about matching the color of the day, not a specific pattern. There were maybe 5 guys, us included, that fished in the dead of winter. Occasional new comers would show up and would spend most of the day staring into their fly boxes, trying to figure out what to tie on.

Grumpy and I would fish from October to a day in March, when we would get skunked.

So, does pattern matter? Color? Presentation? Or is it just luck sometimes?

Discussion How do I improve my streamer fishing?

Running into a few issues with streamers

  1. Achieving the right depth, this is doable when using a conehead or beadhead streamer, but when using an article streamer (like a mini dungeon) I can't get down to the right depth. Will I have to throw split shot on?

  2. What's the best way to fish streamers at night? Is swinging ideal or just casting across and stripping in?
