Has floor living worsened/improved pains for you?

Hey there,

For a few months now, I've been mostly living on the floor throughout my days. (I have become unemployed, so that helps.) I love that and I really struggle to use a chair now. However, because of some pains, I have been unable to stay in the same position for long periods of time, I have to change every 5 minutes or so.

The left side of my body is fine, the pains are all on the right side: they're in my ankle, my knee, and my hip. The most annoying one is in my knee.

To be clear, the pains didn't start because of the floor living. I move constantly throughout the day, and I've been doing mobility exercises.

Can I expect the pains to go away? Are there some positions I should avoid?

Modular or connected, and why? And pillow question.

I just bought a tatami mat from Zonli. I bought the connected because I thought it would be easier in the sense that I don't have to connect them every night, and maybe they move around while I'm sleeping. Do they?

Looking for reviews of both options if you have them.

Update: I've been sleeping pretty pretty much, for about a little less than a week now, with a lot less back pain, and waking up very happy. :) And I only have the 2.5, and I'm not even using a tatami mat yet (I'm just hanging it over the shower rod everyday). Wow, this worked, and worked quick. Almost no more back pain.

The only thing Is pillow(s). I probably don't need them, but I think they would be nice. I was thinking a crescent pillow since I'm a side sleeper and it could cradle my neck well. Does anyone have success with this?

Update!

So I got my Zonli, I let it air out for about 72 hours, and I slept on it for the first time -- officially -- last night. I actually slept awesome! But I've been sleeping on a shitty concerete floor on top of aa thin yoga mat for about 2-3 weeks now, and before that I slept on a terrible 4" (allegedly "high quality) air mattress that was horrid.

I will say my hips hurt when I switched to my side, which I eventually did. Sleeping on this could be a dream if you're a back sleeper, which, I think I may try to do more, but I'm just habitually a side sleeper, so will that change? I don't know. I'm gonna try this for the full 30 days and give it a full trial.

Two things:

  1. I definitely use and put a pillow between my knees. Big help.
  2. I need a better pillow. I'm gonna try a crescent pillow and see if that works. And definitely need a body pillow, too.
  3. A big comfy comforter also helps not feel my hips too much. I'm using a big fat down one, and I slept really well last night-- all things considering.

4" might be needed but I actually really like 2.5". I just need to make it work where my hips dont hurt sleeping on my side. Sounds like it's just cushion that I need more of. Maybe my body will adapt? Idk. I'm questioning needing a tatami mat as I put a sheet on it, but I'll probably order one just incase today since it sounds like they're for moisture control and not comfort, and those are two very different things. And I'll probably just order of those fans to warm it up every day, or put it out in the sun, or both?

Can I just put it in the sun everyday for an hour or two instead of using a $100 fan? It came really small but expanded and is about 73" long and 52" wide (2 inch short in width)

Looking for temporary table and bed

Hello,

Long story short, I've had to move back with a family member since I lost my job.

I miss working on the floor. Is there maybe a good non-costly option for a temporary table to work on? (I need to use my laptop and a few accessories.) For sitting behind it I guess I can use my pilates mat.

Similarly, is there a decent option for floor sleeping?

I hate to say it but I'm looking to buy on Amazon because I don't want to spend too much during this life transition. I'll get proper floor furniture once I move into my own place but that might take a while.

Just received the zonli full size

I kinda like it but it's waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay short. It's supposed to be 72" X 54" but upon measuring it, it's only 66" X 48. Does it expand, and if so, how much?

How do I get it to expand the fastest and the most? Does it need to be left in the direct, hot sun for 72 hours? Man I hope it gets a lot bigger since I'm 5'11 1/2 and it's looking kinda small right now.

And is there a top or bottom, or does it matter? Man I'm kinda wishing I got the 4" but we'll see how it goes. I'm gonna give a serious shot.

Now that I think about it, 72" may actually work assuming it expands because I'm primarily a side-sleeper and u lose a few inches when u sleep that way and curl up. Anyone have any experience with this?

Can you return the Zonli mattress?

I'm brand new to this and struggling to like it. I'm on board in theory but hate it in practice -- because I wake up in pain every morning. That's not to say my bed was better though, as I just returned it. Thankfully, it allowed for returns.

I'm about to try the Zonli. If you buy it from Amazon and try it out, is Zonli pretty good about returns? I just wanna try it for literally one night, and make it a low investment trial without going too hard. I was thinking going Futonbedsfromjapan but it would take 1 month to get to me, so that's a no go, and then they definitely won't take back returns.

I'm sleeping on 2 yoga mats right now and I just wake up in pain every morning so I need to find a better solution (my back, my hips, neck). I'm traditionally a side sleeper. I'm 155lbs and 6', so not heavy or skin and bones.

PS I've never been comfortable in beds, so this is an easy transition for me. I just need to find the right tools to do it. Who likes 2.5 inch and who likes 4 inch, and why? I wanna try the 2.5 but im scared of having to buy all sorts of stuff in order to figure out what works and what doesn't, and then not being able to return any of it. To bad they don't have a way to demo this lifestyle and all the products..

I was thinking of just getting this as a starter: (full) https://www.amazon.com/ZonLi-Japanese-Mattress-Foldable-Dormitory/dp/B0GHRPKK3M/ref=sr_1_4?crid=3O0F197UW7SIH&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.F4JiDbDY18hVRrnMZATphVeGPBrAYV4BxnEMxgV5cAafWK30G3Pb7Obxz7Em2yNBgnsK6OeupS4SAhcF8-9p154xoPFDMh_mg1tsaIWTVkp_Zy1CYo8hHYbgG6J9FCv6epQyyotg6V2kupi5MgIpAzh74EaK3vgRKzttX9505hNRKJ4pQSwaMZsGuCpXrRz3R0QSpOfBMVObKP5icrcWspEyWiYUAj-5XMXInbZ5aBg.1B90eEF7DiOV9WTUXZiT0KhRnxLlKdgB5Hc6m9NY8z0&dib_tag=se&keywords=zonli%2Bfloor%2Bmattress&qid=1790614487&sprefix=zonli%2B%2Caps%2C261&sr=8-4&th=1

and of course the tatami from them, too.

I guess kinda what i want to know is: is the zonli actually comfy, or is it just a cheap starter?

And is 2.5" really enough? Im wondering if anyone is actually comfortable with just 2.5". I think the Japnese futons are 4.5".

Floor Sleeping Setup suggestions? To be shipped to canada

Been sleeping on a regular foam futon from costco on a hard floor for the past year. It has decompressed and it has begun to disrupt my sleep.

What should I upgrade to? I mostly sleep on back, but turn to my side when it get uncomfortable. So a single or compact single size mattress would do.

How much should I expect to spend? Did a basic setup on east west futons for a cotton shikibuton and tatami mat and total was 700 CAD.

Floor sleeping ive been floor living for my whole adult life and i just had a baby and this is mostly convenient but

my knees hurt so bad these days going up and down the stairs to get to my living space and i only have a couple of chairs around where my husband works and everything else is floor, floor bed, yoga mat on the floor, or standing. we have a very small living space. is there something i can do to help my knees? its never been like this before and i think it might be because of the strain from carrying my baby/having been pregnant all piling up on my knees and i have to get up and down with her to soothe her and then sit down again when shes calm and for diaper changes frequently getting up and going back and forth from standing to sitting on the floor all the time while carrying extra weight is just taking such a toll on my knees. i dont have good health insurance for myself so i cant really go to a doctor any time soon for it but in the mean time i thought maybe this space would have good answers? ill also ask in the floor bed baby community to see if theres anyone there that can relate too. any advice that hopefully doesnt include no longer floor living would be great lol

Floor sleeping Anyone from Canada?

Thumbnail etsy.com

I am considering getting a futon mattress from FutonTokyo. They have an etsy shop that I could order from but warn that outside the US the fee could get pretty bad. Is there anyone in BC who's ordered recently that can offer insight into what those fees might look like? I want to be able to budget for this properly. Alternatively, are there better places or companies to order from in Canada?

"But what about your guests?"

I just told my father I was thinking about giving floor living a go and this was literally their reaction lol.

In all honesty though, I feel like he did raise an important question and it got me thinking.

There aren't many resources about floor living online and most of them only talk about how to make it work for one or two people, how long to get used to it and what not but how to host 4+ people at once is rarely discussed.

Would you be willing to share your experience? I'm interested in what set ups have and haven't worked for you, and some pictures as well if you're comfortable.

Can't sit on chairs anymore

Anyone else have this issue? I've always preferred floor living but ever since I built my floordesk and spend most of my day on the floor I've found that it's incredibly hard for me to sit on a regular chair for an extended period of time. Not being able to adjust my pose and legs is infuriating and I just get this itch to get up

Zonli…is this right?

I bought a Zonli 4” mattress recently - I know it’s egg carton foam, but the egg carton shape is facing down, toward the floor. In the pictures on their website, it’s oriented so that egg carton faces up and is topped with another layer of foam.

Does anyone else have e a Zonli, am I crazy or did they put this together backward?

Floor sitting What is the Best Type of Cushion to Seat on the floor?

I currently don't have anywhere to sit in my apartment besides my bed and my desk chair so I thought it would be a good opportunity to try floor sitting.

The thing is, I just don't know what I should get? How large should the cushions be and how thick? Should they be round or square?

What would be a reasonable price to pay for some cushions?

I'm 6 feet tall by the way.

Floor sleeping very low night stand next to my futon wanted

Hey friends,

I sleep on a japanese futon on tatami mats, and I want to put a very low (japandi) night stand next to it, so I can keep my tissues, glasses & bottle next to me without just putting it on the floor and having to tidy up every single morning.

How do you guys do it??

Sadly I cannot for the life of me find anything close to what I'm looking for... Can you guys share your wisdom please?

- low nightstand (<40cm)

- closed design (drawer)

- does not have be too spacious

Also if anyone has some other idea what to do about my issues I'd apprechiate your input :D

Floor sitting Floor sofas vs mould

I've recently made the transition to my first floor sofa, which is two thin IKEA mattresses stacked on top of one another with backing cushions, kind of like a middle eastern majlis sofa. When elderly relatives visit I add some old sofa cushions on top to get the height up.

I'm really enjoying the flexibility of being able to adjust the seating arrangement how I like - often I have both mattresses out flat to create a large soft surface to sit on, but I can also put everything away if I choose. The only issue is that I have mattresses flat on the carpet, and this is guaranteed to cause mould issues in the long term. I'm never going to remember to pick the bottom mattress up as often as I should.

How are people mould-proofing their floor sofas? Putting a tatami underneath seems like it will just put off the inevitable problem, and having extra height there will also make it harder to pull out into a larger lounging surface. You can get raised platforms for majlis and Moroccan-style seating, but I'm a bit loath to add fixed furniture back into the space when I've only just got rid of it. Do I maybe just put a plastic sheet under and call it good?

Also, I'm interested to know if anyone has used a majlis in real life. They seem like a very cool upgrade to my current setup! What are they like to use in person?

Side sleeping

So, i have been sleeping on a standing futon mattress for several years. It is kind of perfect. I slept a couple of nights on my sister's tempurpedic mattress and i hated it. I actually prefer it decently firm. However, my mattress got moldy and i need to replace it asap. I am poor (like minimum wage) so im trying to not spend a ton. I spent about an hour and a half sleeping on my yoga mat (1 inch thick foamy material) but it hurt my shoulder.

So, has anyone made this transition to something like the zonli floor futon, which i understand is less firm, and been okay with it?

Floor sleeping does a slatted wood base enough air flow for a mattress ?

Post image
27 Upvotes

i have an ikea malm double bed and their lonset wooden slatted bed base , but i would really like to sell off the bed frame ( with a spare set of luroy wooden slats ) and sleep lower on the floor .

is 7-8cm enough height off the ground for adequate airflow ? i am moving in two days and my new room has carpet , should i get mats to put underneath then or will i be fine without ?

a futon would be sooo great to have , but i can't justify buying one since i bought my mattress just last year for around 1700aud and love it a lot , it's great for me as a curvy side sleeper .

i also can't buy a low profile wooden bed frame bc they are like 300 dollars (•ᯅ•) and basically the only difference is that they are a touch higher off the ground .

What about using a wool topper for a floor bed?

What are the pros and cons to wool? I was looking at possibly getting a 2-3 inch topper and maybe layering it with a wool blanket or some sort of denser, almost felt-like pad. Has anyone done something similar to this? Whats been your experience? I was also wondering if wool might be less maintenance than cotton since it naturally wicks moisture and repels odors and oils. Thoughts?

What size floor bed for a couple?

Hi, I just ordered a full size 4” classic Zonli floor mattress with the plan to test it out and give our bodies time to adjust to sleeping on a firmer surface before investing in a traditional floor mattress from Japan. I’m curious though, what size futon do those of you that have a partner end up purchasing? I was considering buying a king size at some point (a traditional shikibuton from either Futon Tokyo or Futon Beds from Japan), but was worried about the weight and it being cumbersome to move and do maintenance on (moving it outside, changing/washing covers, etc.). Would it be better to get two twins or two fulls instead? What do you do or recommend? TIA!

Why did you start floor living?

I just found the community and I am very curious what drew you into this way of living?

My main concerns that I have about floor living would be 1. Bugs. Can't stand em and would be nervous about the idea of waking up next to a creepy crawly. 2. Pain. I have fibromyalgia and wonder how floor sitting/sleeping would play into that. 3. Cleaning. With fabric furniture directly on ground isn't mold a worry? And do you find it to be more work having to rearrange furniture when you clean
