Double-clicking the header of an application window on macOS only maximizes that window vertically, but not horizontally

Yeah, it does that.

If you actually want it to fill the whole screen without triggering fullscreen mode, hover your cursor in a window corner until you see the double-headed diagonal arrow, then double-click for the width, or Opt double-click for a complete fill.
The only downside of that method is it doesn't remember its previous size.

OMG, Opt double-click on corner works. My first-world problem is solved.

Mac OSX. Gross. Actually a pretty good first world problem though.
