Tips for a beginner?

I've always wanted to play FFT, but I just can't get into it. I love FF and turn based games, but for some reason I just play the first fight and not touch the game again for years.

So I want to give it one last shot before deciding that it's not for me, so can I get any tips for this last try?

Thank you!

The first 3 or so fights are tedious and borderline frustrating, and don't resemble how fun the game gets once you can branch out and use more jobs. Dorter is a filter in this game, but if you make it past that fight, it eases up a bit for a long time, and you can start to experiment and have fun with more strategies without being punished as hard.

I have a lot more fun as soon as I can change some units into mage jobs and can start buffing my units and controlling the fight more. Shell, Protect & Haste are strong, and debuffs like toad, silence, charm and paralyze can shut down units as well. Monks and black mages are very strong early and good to promote your units into, while archers and knights are fairly weak without good gear.

JP Gained up and Accumulate from the squire job are nice to have too for all of your units to develop them faster.

Press L / R when selecting where to place your units to select generic units to be part of your team.

(You have no idea how many hours I got stuck on the first fight with just Ramza and Delita)

Got it, thank you

And I don't know what fight you're talking about lol

They mean Magic City Garland (the first non-tutorial battle)

I see, the one with lots of bandits? If that's the one then, I played it :D

Yup - if you fought a group of Squires in a sort of Venice-like city, that's the first battle.

Hmmm. What about that first fight bothers you?

I think it's the limited options like you get attack, throw stone.... And that's it? I know obviously you get more stuff as you progress and level up... But I don't know lol

I also remembered that I've played the second fight a couple of times don't remember if I won or not

That's the point of a game like this. You build up your team and learn new abilities as you progress. It would be unreasonable for you to play chapter 1 and be able to use a wide range of abilities.

Play through the first chapter and see if you can stomach the game. By the end of that you should have unlocked a ton of classes and abilities and you can decide if it's worth sitting through the rest of the game.

I'll give it a try, thank you!

Just so you know. I know it might not seem like it at the start but there are actually so many variations of team combinations and builds. Plus later on there will be more cool characters to recruit that I think you will enjoy. If you're on Ivalice chronicles you can see all the classes you haven't unlocked yet and their pathways.

almost every RPG starts being simple and boring, the gist of it starts right after it. by the end of the first chapter you may end up having unlocked around 90% of the fighter or caster jobs for each of your most used characters.

Consider the opening fights the “tutorial” of the game. The complexity and difficulty will open up as you progress and also the ways you can exploit the game to your advantage.

I don't really know, I'll think a little more about it and tell you, but usually I don't wanna play anymore after that fight

I don’t mean this to sound snarky but.. try investing more than 10 minutes into a game before judging it? Idk how else to respond to that

u/Panwey 1d ago

Ok? I think the fact that I made this post means that I think it's a good game and that I want to like it? I mean I even said that I wanted to like it and wanna give it one last try.

For sure, I got that. It’s just also hard to give tips when you haven’t really played.. any of the game.. so that’s genuinely my tip. Give it a solid hour and then come back, the real beauty of the game unfolds once you’re much deeper in it. A bunch of classes to mix and match, an awesome story and good characters that take more than the first mission to develop.

I’d avoid taking too much advice early on because it’s really easy to strip any difficulty from the game once you know how to break it. I beat the game when I was 12 (and yeah, there were painful parts because internet access was spotty) and I’m not particularly bright so I believe in you.

1st thing is always get "JP boost" from squire job on every person first.

2nd, get "Focus" from squire. It's your filler move. If you don't act on a turn, use focus.

3rd, you can farm the first battle map (Mandalia Plains) as many times as you want.

Similar thing happened to me. I wanted a challenge and started Ivalice Chronicles on Tactician, found it too grindy and put it down for months. But I came back on Standard and couldn’t put it down until I finished it.

Stick with it until the jobs open up. That’s when it gets more interesting. Mixing classes, unlocking Cloud and building your dream party was my favourite.

What are you playing on? It can be a slow paced game so i understand the need to fast forward, and playing it on emulators and using fast forward kills a lot of the vibe for me (ruins the animation/music).

Playing it on the recent remaster is great. I was worried about the 'fast forward' option but it didn't harm the flavor of the game. The music plays at normal speed even if you fast forward.

I'm not sure what else to say except you need to play a bit further to get into it.

If you enjoy plot/lore, one thing you can try is go into the menu and go to Arazlam's history/lore encylopedia. I dont recall the exact menu button. He is the historian who is documenting and retelling all of the story of FFT and you can read a bit about the history and characters to maybe get into it. The story ends up being a wild political/religious/demonic epic.

First time was on a PS1 as a kid, then on the phone a few times and one a Vita

I'll try the lore thing, thank you

It really opens up in chapter 2. The first chapter can feel like a slog for sure. What i would suggest is theory crafting a team to figure out the direction youre looking to go

1

u/Panwey 1d ago

What's theory crafting?

u/Plebecide 1d ago

Fancy way of saying making a plan for which jobs and skills you want on your team

Generally I make sure to get JP up and move+1 on everyone before moving my way down the job tree

I've played this game quite a bit, I'd be happy to help if you want

Look at the classes and abilities that the game has in it and start thinking "Okay, what sort of combos do I want to have?" For example, I knew early I wanted a dedicated Black Mage character, so I set up thinking that I'll want a character who goes to that sort of archetype. Black Mage as their main class, but then give them the Magic Guns that show up later that scale off of Magic Attack, and then I figured giving them Rend/Knight Skills to help them support the team by breaking enemy armor, Archer's Bane to help keep them alive, and Equip Gun so they could use the gun. Turned out to be an EXTREMELY powerful character. I also knew I wanted a character for Monster Hunting, so I put together a Dragoon with Tame so that I could get good range on being able to Tame creatures that kept running away so that I could start a Poach farm for some end game equipment.

1

u/Panwey 1d ago

Oh I didn't know you could do that, thank you!

2

u/TechnoMaestro 1d ago

Yup! Because you can see what all the abilities are, you can kinda build an end result and work backwards. So for my mage, I knew I needed Rend, so I made sure my guy spent a while as or in a party with Knights to get the JP needed for those skills.

have fun, dont overlevel make the game boring (in my opinion)

1

u/Panwey 1d ago

I can't over level if I don't get past the first few fights lol but I'll keep that in mind, thank you!

2

u/Gustav_Henry 1d ago

Build mages and make the main character a tank-like. Let the mages on auto and use only the main character. Don't over level, because the enemies will always be around the level of the highest level member in the battlefield (I did a run once where I went to lvl. 90 before the half of the game. The enemies were all lvl.90, even if only the main character was at that level). Chemist and squires abilities are really useful as your second set of abilities.

u/Panwey 1d ago

Awesome, thank you!

Don't overleved cause it will ruin the challenge.

Use generics for more customization and fun.

Complete every side/optional questsnfor more content.

Don't rush the main adventure and enjoy the lore/story
