Hi guys! I really need some advice because I’m honestly feeling a bit heartbroken about this situation.
I have two baby girls, both around six months old, with one being about four weeks older than the other.
They have COMPLETELY different personalities.
My older girl is an absolute sweetheart. She’s very bubbly, gentle, playful, loves giving me kisses, and absolutely loves socialising. She’s always looking for attention and wanting to play.
My youngest, however, is the complete opposite. She’s extremely independent, bites VERY hard, hisses at us, and constantly hisses at her older sister whenever she tries to play with her. She also steals pretty much everything from her sister and rarely seems interested in playing together. She mostly just wants to do her own thing.
What really breaks my heart is watching my older girl constantly trying to get her attention and initiate play, only to be hissed at or ignored. Sometimes she eventually gives up and just lies down next to her sister. I know I shouldn’t necessarily project human emotions onto them, but I can’t help wondering whether she’s feeling lonely or rejected.
I’ve actually been considering getting a third ferret, hoping that maybe my older girl could have another little friend who enjoys playing and socialising as much as she does. But obviously, there’s no guarantee what personality a third ferret would have, and I’m worried about making the situation even more complicated.
And this is something I feel genuinely awful admitting, but sometimes I catch myself thinking that maybe I should have chosen a different second ferret. Not because I don’t love my youngest, because I absolutely do, but because she seems so uninterested in interacting with either us or her sister. It sometimes feels like she doesn’t really want to be part of the group, and that makes me sad.
I understand that every ferret has their own personality, and I don’t expect them to behave identically. I also know they’re still very young and their personalities might change as they grow.
I just want both of my girls to be happy, and I genuinely don’t know whether I’m worrying over nothing or whether my older girl would benefit from having another playful companion.
Has anyone experienced something similar? Did your ferrets eventually become closer as they got older? Would getting a third ferret be a good idea, or should I give them more time?
I’d really appreciate any advice or personal experiences. I love both of my girls so much, and I just want to do what’s best for them. ❤️

Here are 4 pictures taken over the past 2 months
This is Luna who’s just turned one!
During the summer she lost a lot of her coat but it is finally starting to thicken up & grow back but the part at her base of her tale is very bald still, I can see little black spots where the hair should be but it’s taking a while to grow back compared to her back which has grew back loads!
She hasn’t had her first season yet either & looking at getting the implant for her soon but just want to know is it normal for hair to take this long to grow??
She is also kept indoors too

My boy is 4.5 years old. He has these spots on a few different areas on the body. They look like tiny specs of dirt. But cant pull it off the skin. Waiting for my vet app, but if anyone has dealt with this, or know what it could be please comment. Would like some help before the vet app to ease my mind

TLDR:
How bad is the ferret smell in the home really if you care for them properly, and keep up with litter and bedding everyday etc. 2 bed apartment, and planned on keeping their cage in the living room.
Hi everyone!
Me and my fiancé are moving into a 2 bed apartment, and are looking into getting ferrets. My mom had ferrets when I was young, I loved them so so much, but she ended up getting rid of them:( I’ve always wanted a pair of my own in adulthood since. One thing with my mom and the ferrets, she let them free roam, and was NOT good about keeping up with the poop and such. It was in every corner, and as you can image, it was gross, and the smell was intense. I always felt that if they were taken care of properly, the smell wouldn’t be THAT big of an issue.
I’ve been doing a lot of research and reading, going through this forum too, and I feel like I’m getting some mixed opinions on just how bad it can get even with great proper care?
We would have them in the living room, and I think that’s why I’m more concerned about the general home smell. I wouldn’t be concerned at all if we had a separate room to keep their cage in.
Need honest answers please!
I miss ferrets so so SO much and the possibility of having them back in my life gives me so much joy.
TIA!!

EDIT: unfortunately Simon passed away in his sleep during the night following his surgery. Thanks everyone for your support

Maybe I’m the odd one out, but I see SO many ferret setups on social media where there are no blankets, liners, beds, or anything soft at all. Just ferrets walking around on bare plastic.
I also see a ton of Ferret Nation cages where people remove all the ramps. Mine are still young, but I’ve kept the ramps because I’d rather they have the option than basically launch themselves between levels and plop onto the floor below lol. I know some people remove them because they’re worried about falls or because their ferrets don’t use them, but I still prefer having a safe, gradual way for mine to move between levels.
I genuinely don’t understand having a huge cage with one or two hammocks and nothing else soft for them to lie on or burrow into. Ferrets sleep for so many hours a day, and they love curling up, nesting, digging, and hiding under things. It makes my heart hurt a little seeing some of these setups where the cage is technically large, but there’s barely anything in it to make it comfortable or interesting.
Even if they spend a lot of time outside the cage, their enclosure should still feel like a safe, cozy place to rest. A few hammocks hanging from the top don’t always seem like enough, especially when there’s so much empty space underneath. Adding fleece blankets, washable liners, tunnels, sleep sacks, beds, and little hideaways can make such a difference. It doesn’t have to be expensive either. A lot of people use inexpensive fleece blankets or make simple liners and tunnels themselves.
The worst one I saw recently was someone who actually removed the plastic floor pans entirely and had the ferrets walking directly on the wire bars. She put bedding UNDER the bars so they could go to the bathroom through the floor. At that point, I really struggle to understand it. Wire flooring can be uncomfortable and potentially harmful to their feet, and putting bedding underneath doesn’t change the fact that they’re spending their time standing and walking on bars. There is so much free information available about proper ferret housing, flooring, enrichment, and basic comfort.
I also think people sometimes focus so much on making a cage easy to clean that they forget it still needs to be a living space. Of course, hygiene matters, and nobody wants a filthy enclosure, but there has to be a balance between cleanliness and comfort. If the solution to easier cleaning is removing every soft surface and leaving the animals on plastic or wire, then the setup probably needs to be reconsidered.
Maybe I’m just excessive with mine, but I’d much rather give them too many cozy places than not enough. I’d rather wash extra blankets and liners than have them spend all day on hard, bare surfaces with nowhere comfortable to settle. Ferrets are curious, playful, and incredibly active, but they also deserve a soft, secure place to sleep and relax when they’re in their cage.
