Tell me the difference

I speak Farsi pretty fluently, but I’ve never understood the difference between these tenses:

داشت دروغ میگفت

داشته دروغ میگفته

Are they the same or not?

Oh boy, I as a native speaker just got that feeling of I know the usuage but not the reason :)))

They can mean the same, but when you go Dāshteh + something +eh, it can denote continuous action in the past. It's usually a question, but not always.

That's my own take. Hope one can elaborate further.

Second one happens way more in the past

On my own I would say that

First one is 'He/she was lying'

Second one is 'He/she has (had) been lying'

But I tried different translater and it didn't give the results I was thinking so I asked Claude about the second one precisely and he answered me :

" It means "So he was actually lying" or "Turns out he'd been lying." The داشته … می‌گفته form is the evidential past progressive: it describes an ongoing action in the past that the speaker didn't witness directly but has just found out about or inferred. The key nuance is that sense of discovery, which English conveys with words like "actually," "turns out," or "apparently."

I didn't reach such a level of complexity in my persian studies, I can't comment on this. Maybe someone that has higher education on the subject can give their opinion on this

He was lying.

You are talking about something that was happening at a particular moment in the past.
وقتی رسیدم، داشت دروغ می‌گفت.
When I arrived, he was lying.

داشته دروغ می‌گفته ≈ Apparently, he was lying / It turns out he was lying.

You are looking back at a past event and realizing/reporting it from your current perspective.

بعداً فهمیدم که داشته دروغ می‌گفته.
Later, I realized that he had been lying.

so:
داشت می‌گفت → I was there / I’m describing what was happening then.

داشته می‌گفته → I’m looking back and telling you what I now realize was happening.

I ate من خوردم

I had eaten من خورده‌ام

Colloquially both would be من خوردم but with emphasis on a different syllable: man KHORdam vs man khorDAM

He ate او خورد

He has eaten او خورده

My advice is to stop overthinking Persian language. Speaking Persian is like poetry, focusing on rules will just take away the beauty. Keep shadowing with movies and talking to Persian natives and you'll see the change.

Then I think you should try reading books. It really helps. I can send you any Persian book you like. There is a lot of amazing Translators in Iran.

As you said you are fluent in Farsi I'm gonna answer this in Persian:

داشت دروغ میگفت: عملی که در زمینه در گذشته در حال رخ دادن بوده. مثلا: داشت دروغ میگفت که رضا حرفش رو قطع کرد.

داشته دروغ میگفته: این برای وقتیه که چیزی رو برای کسی از دیگری نقل و قول میکنی و طرف مقابل وقتی میشنوه بهت میگه: بابا داشته دروغ میگفته بهت!

That's my take and I hope it helps.
