📚 Summon book recommendations Please recommend some beginner fantasy books.

Hello. I am a normal reader and i have read some books (murder mysteries, self-help and biographies). I have also watched movies like LOTR and Harry Potter but i have never read any fantasy books. So i want you to recommend me some good books to enter into fantasy genre.

PLEASE: The book should not be very childish or basic type as i intend to get better and read progressively more complex books like Malazan. I saw some mixed reviews of Assassin's Apprentice. Some say it is very boring while others love it. So i am in a fix here as i was thinking to enter into fantasy with that book as my first.

📚 Summon book recommendations Trying to remember the name of fantasy mecha book(s)

I remember running across this book in some list that sounded really cool. It was a fantasy series with dynastic houses, mech suits, and it had a kind of Victorian Fantasy/steampunk vibe. It came out within the last 3 or 4 years I think...

It had something to do with a young woman in a noble house connecting with this guy who was a kind of mech mechanic to help repair her family's mech. Advertised itself as having a swashbuckling tone. Can anyone help me find this book???

💬 Let's discuss something Is it worth reading The Kingkiller Chronicle and/or A Song of Ice and Fire series knowing they may never be finished?

Hi all, basically as per the title.

Is it still worth reading these series knowing that they may never been finished? Would you have read them if you had known at the time that they may never be finished?

It’s a pretty big investment of time and energy into a story that may not conclude, but I’ve heard really good things about both, and I’m already pretty familiar with the ASOIAF universe from the TV shows + lore deep dives.

I’ve only gotten back into reading in the last couple of years after a pretty big hiatus (early teens) so I’ve generally leaned towards shorter books. The only fantasy series I’ve read recently is the First Law collection. I guess I’ve been stubborn and told myself that if GRRM can’t be bothered writing the next book why I should I bother reading the earlier ones.

When only book 1 is shown then that ranking is for the entire series. Any suggestions based on my list?

You guys I am soooo happy to finally have all of these !

When I first read the series, it was though the library, since I only buy books I’m positive I’ll reread. Obviously this series was of that standard, so I knew I wanted some good trophy versions for my shelf. What could be better than the OG mass market paperbacks with amazing art?

I found the Farseer and Tawny Man trilogies fairly easily, since I got those in a big bundle, but the Ship books were more elusive and expensive. I had to suck it up and buy them on eBay but they’re in such good condition I don’t mind. Can’t wait to go for a reread when I get over the ending (which happened for me in March and I’m still not over it)

📚 Summon book recommendations Recs for a relatively short one-off fantasy book to break up a long series I'm reading?

Currently reading through The Dark Tower series, loving it a ton but I'm a little burnt out. Wanting something short and self contained to one book. What are your favorites?

📚 Summon book recommendations Any fantasy books with adventurers and parties

Hi everyone so I'm new to the whole fantasy book thing. Previously I've only read fantasy manga or Isekai manga. From there one of my favorite concept is adventurers, adventurers guild and parties.

One of the light novels that does it the best is Grimgar, Ashes and Illusions. It has a low level realistic party of six teenagers. There's classes like paladin warrior priest mage Ranger thief etc.

I'm really interested by this Dynamic. So I'll really be grateful if any of the good folks of this sub could suggest any fantasy books like this.

💬 Let's discuss something When does it get good?

I would love peoples opinions on when certain books get good.

I almost didn’t finish Shadow of the Gods until Chapter 17 hit and I felt like the plot really started to heat up. With the three points of view the plot felt a bit meandering before that.

Any other books where you have to stick with it until X chapter before deciding to put it away?

📚 Summon book recommendations The Wheel of Time or The Realm of the Elderlings?

Both are about 16 books in length.

I don't want to read both. It'll take me awhile to commit to a series that long and I have other books on my backlog I need to get to after I am done one of these series.

I've heard mixed things about The Wheel of Time. I don't really like that the series was finished by someone else even though he had notes from the original author.

Anyway,

Tell me what you think.

Thanks!

❤️ Book praise Malice by John Gwynne (roller coaster of a reading experience)

Post image
39 Upvotes

Reading this book you kinda feel like you’re reading two different books. The first half was a nice little jaunt through an old Irish forest, hanging out with some young kids who scurry around their village. But then things turn and the second half has some of the most tense scenes I’ve ever read.

Here’s what I liked:

The relationships in this book were incredible. I won’t go too much into detail, but there’s one relationship in this book/series that is my favorite from any book. I’m still trying to chase this high and find other books that have great relationships like this. Haven’t found any.

I think you could summarize the storytelling style in one sentence: characters you love put into horrible situations by characters you hate. I loved it.

And the intensity of the second half was a blast.

Here’s what I didn’t really like:

I think this is John Gwynne’s first book, and unfortunately you can tell. His writing is just horrible. I recently finished his newest trilogy, and the writing is great. I really really really wish he could go back and rewrite this story.

The pacing is also super wonky. In the first half, it’s soooo slow. Reads more like a slice of life kinda book. I almost stopped reading it. But I enjoyed the setting, and was reading it at night before bed, so it was fine. Then all of a sudden it’s the most intense, fast-paced book you’ve ever read.

He also for some reason takes out all of the mystery? Like there are several events where it feels like the chapters should be switched. You see what’s about to happen to the characters first, and then you experience it with them. It was very odd.

There’s also too many characters and POVs. It is fun when they meet, but that happens relatively infrequently, and I think the book would be more enjoyable if it was streamlined a bit more.

Something I was neutral on: it's not original at all. Very tropey. But they're all tropes I like, so I didn't mind.

📚 Summon book recommendations In the mood for really evil Elves (not Elric)

Really enjoy evil sadistic elves in media. I did a few Elric stories hoping to scratch the itch (I understand not actually an elf, but nearish). It was just a bit... dated for me. A lot of deus ex machina magic as well.

Curious what the other foundational and/or best evil elf books are. Not opposed to DnD or Warhammer (though I much prefer fantasy to 40k). Though I'd rather avoid too much good guy Drizzt on the DnD front. Also, while I adore Total War Warhammer, I wonder if the books require a lot of background knowledge I don't have.

Also very much open to the world outside drow and druchii

💬 Let's discuss something Question: Should I read the Narnia books now?

I'm in my late twenties, and I have seen The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe movie a long time ago, but none of the others. I do remember liking it a lot though. Now that the new movie trailer has dropped, I wanted to know the story properly before watching the movie.

So should I read the books now???

I understand that these are children's books, but I don't mind reading a good fantasy story nonetheless.

Please help.... Is it worth the time?

📚 Summon book recommendations Fantasy books where the world building was IMMACULATE

Looking for fantasy books (standalone and series both welcomed) where the world building is so good that you feel like you’re literally IN the book. Bonus points if the plot is just as good.

My tier list This Years Books

Post image
32 Upvotes

Got back into reading again this year after an 8 year hiatus.

Started off with another Harry Potter re-read and jumped into Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes then Sunrise on the Reaping, then went into Red Rising, DCC, then Between two fires, and now finishing Throne of Glass.

Looking to start Mistborn next. What else should I add to my fantasy read list?

Have read: like first 4 GoT books and loved them but dropped cause he'll never finish, first 2 Witcher books (meh), the Magicians (meh).

Used to read more thriller/mystery books before my hiatus, but looking into more fantasy stuff now. E.g., Shutter Island (great), Gone Girl (great), Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series (liked millennium trilogy), Cormoran Strike series (good), Agatha Christie stuff.

📚 Summon book recommendations Next read help appreciated

I’ve just finished Raymond E Feist’s Riftwar Saga - wow, really enjoyed all three books, although Magician for me was a step above the other two, which were still enjoyable.

I’ve also recently bought a Kindle and managed to get a few books on the cheap which I’m trying to choose from. Before Riftwar I’d read:

Will Wight - Cradle (I’m currently reading these alongside another book, currently on book 2)
Joe Abercrombie - First Law trilogy
John Gwynne - The Faithful and the Fallen
Leo Carew - Under the Northern Sky trilogy
David Eddings - The Belgariad
JRR Tolkien - The Hobbit and then LOTR
Brandon Sanderson - Mistborn
Alongside a number of Discworld books in parallel to the above (big love for the watch focussed ones)

Not sure I can say I have a specific theme I enjoy, but I have enjoyed moving around between different authors and will come back to the further works of all those I’ve previously read.

Anyway, what I have available are (yes it is quite a mix!):

Dan Simmons - Hyperion
Frank Herbert - Dune
Nicholas Eames - Kings of the Wyld
Ryan Cahill - first book of The Bound and the Broken
Jay Kristoff - Empire of the Vampire
NK Jemisin - The Killing Moon
Bernard Cornwell - Excalibur
Christopher Buehlman - Between Two Fires

I think I’m moving towards Between Two Fires as it’s been a while since I’ve read a standalone, but Empire of the Vampire’s also intriguing, but know they are both a bit different from what I may have read before.

I’d appreciate any recommendations from these. I know I’ll read them all at some point, but what first!
