I always loved how Biden was an incoherent vegetable while also controlling the world causing all our problems.
27
u/lifelink 3d ago
That is just straight from the fascism textbook though.
You have to make the enemy seem fragile, incompetent and weak while simultaneously making them strong, overpowering and smart enough to cause all the problems you try to pin on them.
Your base needs to think of them as both too strong and too weak.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ur-Fascism Number 8 is what I am talking about specifically
The fourteen properties are as follows:
1 "The cult of tradition", characterized by cultural syncretism, even at the risk of internal contradiction. When all truth has already been revealed by tradition, no new learning can occur, only further interpretation and refinement.
2 "The rejection of modernism", which views the rationalistic development of Western culture since the Enlightenment as a descent into depravity. Eco distinguishes this from a rejection of superficial technological advancement, as many fascist regimes cite their industrial potency as proof of the vitality of their system.
3 "The cult of action for action's sake", which dictates that action is of value in itself and should be taken without intellectual reflection. This, says Eco, is connected with anti-intellectualism and irrationalism, and often manifests in attacks on modern culture and science.
4 "Disagreement is treason" – fascism devalues intellectual discourse and critical reasoning as barriers to action, as well as out of fear that such analysis will expose the contradictions embodied in a syncretistic faith.
5 "Fear of difference", which fascism seeks to exploit and exacerbate, often in the form of racism or an appeal against foreigners and immigrants.
6 "Appeal to a frustrated middle class", fearing economic pressure from the demands and aspirations of lower social groups.
7 "Obsession with a plot" and the inflation of and focus on an enemy threat. This often combines an appeal to xenophobia with a fear of disloyalty and sabotage from marginalized groups living within the society. Eco also cites Pat Robertson's book The New World Order as a prominent example of a plot obsession.
8 Fascist societies rhetorically cast their enemies as "at the same time too strong and too weak", On the one hand, fascists play up the power of certain disfavored elites to encourage in their followers a sense of grievance and humiliation. On the other hand, fascist leaders point to the decadence of those elites as proof of their ultimate feebleness in the face of an overwhelming popular will.
9 "Pacifism is trafficking with the enemy" because "life is permanent warfare" – there must always be an enemy to fight. Both Nazi Germany under Hitler and fascist Italy under Mussolini, worked first to organize and clean up their respective countries and then build the war machines that they later intended to and did use – despite Germany being under restrictions of the Versailles treaty not to build a military force. This principle leads to a fundamental contradiction within fascism: the incompatibility of ultimate triumph with perpetual war.
10 "Contempt for the weak", which is uncomfortably married to a chauvinistic popular elitism, in which every member of society is superior to outsiders by virtue of belonging to the in-group. Eco sees in these attitudes the root of a deep tension in the fundamentally hierarchical structure of fascist polities, as they encourage leaders to despise their underlings, up to the ultimate leader, who holds the whole country in contempt for having allowed him to overtake it by force.
11 "Everybody is educated to become a hero", which leads to the embrace of a cult of death. As Eco observes, "the Ur-Fascist hero is impatient to die. In his impatience, he more frequently sends other people to death".
12 "Machismo", which sublimates the difficult work of permanent war and heroism into the sexual sphere. Fascists thus hold "both disdain for women and intolerance and condemnation of nonstandard sexual habits, from chastity to homosexuality".
13 "Selective populism" – the people, conceived monolithically, have a common will, distinct from and superior to the viewpoint of any individual. As no mass of people can ever be truly unanimous, the leader holds himself out as the interpreter of the popular will (though truly he alone dictates it). Fascists use this concept to delegitimize democratic institutions they accuse of "no longer represent[ing] the voice of the people".
14 "Newspeak" – fascism employs and promotes an impoverished vocabulary in order to limit critical reasoning.

Biden is apparently the dumbest yet most efficient president ever. I keep hearing how Trump needs more than 2 years to “fix” all that Biden did, but at the same time they make it sound like Biden was in office for 10+ years with all the “bad” he created

u/muffledvoice 3d ago
Right now Dark Brandon is moving all the chess pieces between Iran, Russia, US, and Israel. It's amazing.
MAGA will have to pick a narrative. Either Trump is the greatest president who can do no wrong, or he's the inept boob we know that he is who doesn't understand basic economics, military conflict, foreign relations, or domestic policy. And Joe Biden is either the inept "Sleepy Joe" that Trump likes to endlessly invoke, or he's a mastermind who somehow engineered Trump's downfall while out of office, well into his 80s, and battling cancer.
Pick one, MAGA.

u/GreyGanado 3d ago

This isnt a gotcha when the obvious easy answer is money/personal gain.
4
u/superpenistendo 2d ago

0
u/bones510 2d ago
Theres money in getting power. Im a dem voter but your question was how would conservatives respond to the question “get power…. then what”. As if politicians havent been playing this game since before trump
1
u/superpenistendo 2d ago
I hear you and I agree - I know there’s money in power but it’s only as much as the special interests related to your platform. I mean there’s money in free market capitalism and privatization of public services. As long as that’s your platform you just have to wait for businesses to come to you. I’m sorry because I know I’m squirming away from my original question and rephrasing but if the end goal is power and money isn’t it plainly and obviously clear by now that conservatives stand to gain much more money and power by comparison given their position(s)? Or is just a non-starter since democrats do it in their own way, too?
0
u/bones510 2d ago
I get what you mean and i dont disagree with your overall perspective. Just used to hearing the canned responses from maga and im a long time still-bitter bernie supporter

Because the alternative is admitting (to others, but also to themselves) that the candidate they invested their very identities into is not the great man they thought he was. Which raises all sorts of very uncomfortable questions like: “Did I actually support a felonious child raping narcissistic imbecile?” and “Does this mean all of my problems are not being caused by people who don’t look like me and I’m actually a racist asshole for thinking that?” and “How stupid did I have to be to fall for this piece of shit’s laughably stupid lies?”.
Many people find these questions so distressing to contemplate that they prefer to cling to any excuse they can come up with to allow them avoid accepting that they were wrong.

Yeah, Biden was so efficient in tricking the highest IQ president who passed 4 cognitive tests with bears and sharks, and setting such a big slow bomb, that the most popular smartes president can’t stop that bomb to sink the country and won’t be able in next 2 years as well. And the effects of fixing all that mess will start be noticeable only after pesky dumocrats, sorry, dum(B)ocrats, DumB with a B, did you know that? I did, but many don’t know, the most beautiful B after m, and U and D, so, after they will rig the elections again and win, to claim all the results of the best smartest president of the country stopped falling.

Political literacy in a lot of the world is in the sub-basement. If the electorate was even half educated we’d live in a hugely different world.

u/VandalofFrost 1d ago
Yeah sometimes I question full on voting rights just for this reason alone. Nothing to do with any discrimination except stupidity but testing for that typically does have a lot of discrimination involved eventually.
1
u/hydroxy 1d ago
Democracy as it stands is total lunacy imo. A system where you need good political literacy I think will eventually take over and the Wild West of votes essentially being popularity contests / mud slinging matches will be something relegated to history
1
u/VandalofFrost 1d ago
I mean there is a reason it is famously called something like "the worst political system ever ... except for all the others of course". Biden failed to do anything about the racist fascist take over of the USA. Whatever other modest accomplishment he had in his mediocre presidency it is completely overshadowed by this monumental failure of strength, vision, duty, and ethics. America collapsed on his watch as he handed the keys to Trump over four years of dereliction. This leaves Biden in the bottom quartile of presidents with those who failed in the run up to the civil war and the Great Depression. He’s still a better president than Trump but only because Trump is hands down the worst of any person to hold office in the United States. Fuck Trump but fuck Biden and double fuck Trump now
13
u/Sonochu 3d ago
There is so much hindsight bias in this comment. While in hindsight we can say Biden made the wrong move, I can see why 2021 Biden didn't go as hard on the MAGA movement as he did.
- After Trump lost, everyone thought he would fade away into irrelevancy. He was old, incompetent, and a terrible speaker. He beat Hillary, but Hillary was a deeply unpopular candidate. Republicans also hate losers, and he was a poor loser.
The Republicans seemed to be looking around Desantis. And while Desantis had some horrible policies, he was more mainstream conservative than he was MAGA.
- Going too hard on MAGA would all but hand the 2024 elections to the Republicans. Biden would be seen as too partisan, going after Republicans simply for being Republicans, creating trumped up charges, yada, yada. In fact that was still what Trump did and it worked.
Instead Biden wanted to let the FBI and independent investigations do the work without his direct involvement. This way it was clear the rule of law won the day, not some meddling from Biden.
- The US had worse issues going on than a failed president: Covid, the inflationary spike after that, rising housing prices, the War in Afghanistan, etc, all took priority over what Trump was doing.
Really my only criticism of Biden was naming Garland as his Attorney General as even then that was a bit controversial. And with a Democrat Attorney General, some of the charges and investigations might have stuck. But even that's a big maybe.
0

u/everything_is_bad 3d ago
Naw there were plenty of people tearing their goddamn hair out begging for a real response. Biden’s response was “I don’t want to make my presidency about Trump”.
He owns his failure and the apologists argument that no one could have foreseen or done the right thing is bullshit.
3
u/Sonochu 3d ago
It was a possibility, but a second Trump term was very much a pie in the sky dream. He was deeply unpopular after Covid and Jan 6th, and him being a whiny loser only made thing worse. Every Republican seemed to be pooling around Desantis.
Two things ended up dooming Biden though.
No one could foresee just how horribly managed Desantis' campaign was, giving Trump the opportunity to recapture Republicans Desantis was failing to winover
The inflationary spike after Covid caused real harm to select American groups. Said harm was EXTREMELY overblown based on the data, but that didn't stop the media from running with it.
Ironically Trump is facing a similar issse rn. In, I'd go so far as to say the inflation is what gave Trump the victory. Without it, Biden/Kama would've won in 2024
-1
u/everything_is_bad 3d ago
So you’re like arguing that being wrong was some how right even though it’s been proven now that it was wrong and that the people who were telling you you were wrong at the time are still wrong even though they’ve been proven right
2
u/Sonochu 3d ago
My argument is that the people arguing that were in the extreme minority and were only proven right for reasons no one actually predicted.
They're like people that constantly predict an economic crash. Sure, eventually they will be right. But it doesn't mean their reasoning or information were accurate.
1
u/everything_is_bad 3d ago
K bro except the prediction played out in real time. Perhaps your assumption that the contrary position was extreme was poorly founded
1
u/Sonochu 3d ago
Wow, I can't believe they were able to predict Desantis' campaign being one of the worst run presidential campaigns in history as well as the record breaking inflation we faced after a decade and a half of near nonexistent inflation!
They're either wizards or didn't predict any of that.

No, we did. The American people have a job, and that was it. We collectively have been failing at it since the 1970's. You blaming Biden is a symptom of our failure.

0
u/everything_is_bad 2d ago
Bro the issue is that enlarge America thinks that the level and type of inaction Biden is guilty of is fine.
Still we do nothing and hold ourselves blameless even when we are directly aiding the downfall of America like in the case of Tesla drivers.
We absolve Biden because we are trying to defend our own cowardice and apathy.
Wake up and fight. We are not victims of circumstance but of our own collective weakness.
