This is a tragedy waiting to happen! My grandparents bred and raised red tailed boa constrictors.

-109

u/Bemascu 17h ago

Isn't it dangerous even for humans? I recall a story someone told me, of a guy who had his snake in his bedroom, and it lay flat nex to him (in the tank, which was parallel to the bed). The vet said the snake was measuring the guy to check whether it could eat him.

151

u/rumple___ 17h ago

Snakes do not ā€œmeasure you upā€ or ā€œsize you upā€ to eat you. Thats a myth.

But you’re not wrong with the risk. The snake can decide shes hungry, think an arm or a leg looks like a good snack and grabs on. If the lady is on her own shes at great risk. A snake this size can strangle a human easily.

57

u/Bemascu 17h ago

Thats a myth.

Never mind then, must've been an urban legend I took at face value.

A snake this size can strangle a human easily.

I would think so, they're strong! In the end, it's a predator that unlike cats and dogs isn't "hardwired" to be pets. I wouldn't handle one like that.

37

u/rumple___ 17h ago

We all believed it, don’t worry! I had no idea it was a myth until i wanted to own a snake myself šŸ˜… It does seem like something they’d do haha.

Honestly same! I love snakes but i don’t think i could own anything that gets longer than 6-7ft. The idea of not being able to be alone to handle it just in case would freak me a little.

9

u/Runaway_Angel 12h ago

I have one about that length. Except he's semi-aboreal so much slimmer than the snake in the picture (Taiwanese beauty to be specific lol). And let me tell you that is absolutely more than I can comfortably handle on my own. He mistook my hand for food a while back and coiled on it, it was bruised and aching for two weeks. If he did that to my neck I'd absolutely have some issues. And he's nowhere near as strong as a boa or python.

Personally at this point I don't want anything above 5-6ft, it sounds like a minor difference but it feels like once they get longer than I am tall I want someone else there just in case.

1

u/Huns26 14m ago

Omg I gotta tell my mom, because she told me a similar story about an old boyfriends pet snake

5

u/SoggyLeftTit 16h ago

I’ve heard that same story… When I heard it, it was a joke that was a part of a comedian’s set many years ago.

348

u/StuffedFerret 17h ago

Dangerous for the snake too, cat scratches and bites can be deadly to alot of animals due to the bacteria they harbour in their mouth and under their claws

114

u/alasw0eisme 17h ago

This is too far down! every animal pictured is in mortal danger. Humans' egos are disgusting.

41

u/LV-42whatnow 14h ago

This is also why you shouldn't put live food with any snake not powerful enough to kill it almost instantly. Put a live rat with a medium sized snake and that rat will fight. If the snake is cold or in a cool environment it won't even consider the prey and the prey can wound it easily, or kill it.

27

u/rumple___ 17h ago

Oo yes! forgot about that!

-4

u/AtlanticPortal 6h ago

And they are fast. Really fast. Oh, don't forget that cats are nasty and they play with other animals for fun.

-10

u/Sterlinghawk16 12h ago

Like the cat is going to be the winner at any time. Geez

7

u/Patient-Ferris 11h ago

Coming at this knowing a very small amount about snakes and agreeing this woman is insane but:

I don't think the cat would let it's guard down around the snake, and as it looks like a python which is non venomous so the snake would need to get around the cat to constrict rather than dart in for a quick bite.

I think cats have quicker reaction speeds than a snake, there's the video that gets posted occasionally of a cat bullying a cobra, which is quicker than a python. So I think it could get away in most circumstances.

The snake would only attack if it was hungry and had the energy (warm enough). If the snake is well fed it shouldn't be an issue. I would say maybe the cat would look to big to eat but that snake is massive.

But yeah even not considering the danger to the snake I still wouldn't do this

63

u/NPC261939 18h ago

Anyone who's kept, or raised snakes knows better. Either someone is trolling, or extremely stupid.

31

u/soppslev 15h ago

Never underestimate the human mind's capacity for stupidity.

6

u/Ram2145 13h ago

It’s like a bottomless pit

-32

u/SkyV3n0m 14h ago

I used to have an 8 foot boa that I let free roam with my cats and I never had any issues

11

u/SnooCauliflowers7632 14h ago

Used to? So its gone now?

-22

u/SkyV3n0m 14h ago

I lived in a trailer that had no central heat and so I had moved her to a smaller enclosure to keep her warm over the winter since they can be pretty brutal here in Oklahoma and I guess she overheated she was my first boa and one my first snakes but I now have an actual house with working heat and a/c and a lot more experience keeping snakes and cats though currently all I have snake wise is a ball python and a western hognose

20

u/skepticaltoucan 14h ago

So you are indeed an idiot that has no idea what they’re doing? Appreciate the confirmation

-17

u/SkyV3n0m 14h ago

I’m not an idiot I was still learning at that point which was about 5-6 years ago

4

u/MozartTheCat 9h ago

Not learning enough if you think it's fine for someone to leave their large snake out with their small warm blooded pets

-10

u/SnooCauliflowers7632 13h ago

Thanks for clarifying. I agree, you're not an idiot. Some people lose their compassion behind keyboards.

2

u/rumple___ 5h ago

So you had an enclosure that had no heat bulbs, etc? Is what i’m reading. And still don’t? If you’re relying on ac and a heater for them. Just saying it how i’m reading it.

122

u/Shoddy-Wishbone 15h ago

I am appalled that there are comments supporting this and I am fucking leaving. This is dangerous for literally all of them and Brenda out here like ā€œshe loves them!ā€ She’s going to love them in her belly or they’re going to scratch her and she could literally die from those germs. But go off Brenda and people in the comments saying this is fine.

27

u/HerWildestDreams 15h ago

I think many of us here are appalled tbh, from what I’ve gathered. (Aside from a few..) I agree though. This isn’t a good situation, I’ve never owned snakes but even I know that this whole photo screams ā€œwhen it happensā€¦ā€ because it’s not an if, it’s a when…

117

u/RBNG182 17h ago

Shes gonna wake up one day, look at Freyja with 2 cat shaped lumps in it, and be flabbergasted as to where her cats possibly could have went

32

u/rumple___ 17h ago

wonder where šŸ¤”

18

u/RBNG182 17h ago

Truly will be a mystery to all but God himself

9

u/cryptolyme 14h ago

They ran away!! 😢

63

u/Bad-Luck-Guy 18h ago

Absolutely freaking not. I don’t care how tame she thinks the snake is.Ā

66

u/rumple___ 18h ago

Yuppp. Snakes don’t have feelings of ā€œfamilyā€ or whatever shit she’s yapping about. Shes going to get her cats eaten

The "it hasn't happened before so it will never happen ever" logic people try to use drives me nuts. My 85-year-old stepdad with Alzheimer's insists he can climb ladders because he's never fallen off one. I've never been hit by a car, but I'm not about to go play in traffic.

Some people are only capable of learning the hard way. I hope this woman's pets don't suffer because of her ignorance, but it's likely only a matter of time.

6

u/rumple___ 17h ago

Absolutely this! My snake wont even think to strike my cat through the glass of the tank unless he’s hungry.
He’s only 1.8m and eating week old chicks… my cat is far too big for him and yet…

7

u/boudicas_shield 11h ago edited 11h ago

100%. Snakes are physically incapable of the level of complex thought and emotion she’s projecting onto this one. Their brains are very simple.Ā

6

u/ElishaAlison 18h ago

As someone who knows nothing about snakes, is it big enough to eat the cat?

13

u/rumple___ 18h ago

Yes. The cat would be a perfect sized meal for it 😬

5

u/ElishaAlison 15h ago

Oh wow. Damn those jaws can get huge 😳

5

u/LV-42whatnow 14h ago

Snakes can disconnect their upper and lower jaws to accommodate much larger prey than you might think.

Video of an anaconda reattaching its jaws
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dHHqZmWGC5I

8

u/narmowen 13h ago

Snakes do not disconnect their jaws. They have multiple flexible joints.

https://www.stcnature.org/good-natured/the-truth-about-snake-jaws/

1

u/LV-42whatnow 9h ago

Yes, technically true. Pardon my overstated simplification for the unaware.

2

u/ElishaAlison 14h ago

Oh God I remember seeing that. It's disturbing and awesome at the same time. I guess I realized that, but I still figured there has to be an upper limit?

9

u/Navitach 18h ago

I certainly don't want anything to happen to any of the animals, but if that happens, I guess she'll learn.

21

u/MaryDoogan91 14h ago

One of the most harmful and annoying things people do is project human emotions onto their animals. This snake would absolutely eat her cats if it gets hungry and has the opportunity to. This isn’t a Disney movie.

17

u/DizzyMine4964 15h ago

This is the result of Disneyfication. "All animals love each other! It's so CUTE!"

1

u/rumple___ 6h ago

never thought of it like that. youre not wrong

6

u/aleksbabii 18h ago

What the hell

7

u/GoblinsGuide 16h ago

I would hate to be the one to untangle that mess. Hard pass.

7

u/Finn_704 10h ago edited 1h ago

Good this picture makes me so anxious. I had a ball python and that is exactly how she posed just before getting into strike position. I am so scared for those cats!!

Edit to say God, not good. There is nothing good about this shit.

0

u/rumple___ 6h ago

The whole video is worse!! They get in each others faces and the snake gets rightttt into strike position

2

u/Finn_704 1h ago

That's horrible!! I very much fear for both the snake and the cats, but mostly the poor cats. I know how ball pythons can be... calm one minute and them BAM!!

18

u/Easy-Barnacle5734 18h ago

It’s always odd to me when folks keep reptiles. They have a reptilian brain and have no room for your projected human emotions. Keep them where they belong.

18

u/CoyoteMother666 15h ago

I keep reptiles, but I sure as hell am not as ignorant as this person.

I have a veiled chameleon and a ball python. I call them my pet rocks because, though they will tolerate being handled, they typically aren’t. I spent so much time and money setting up and perfecting their enclosures for this reason.

Animals of any kind deserve respect. Having your big ass snake out with your cats isn’t respecting either party.

9

u/Easy-Barnacle5734 15h ago

This is an awesome take. I respect you for being a responsible reptile owner.

4

u/CoyoteMother666 14h ago

Honestly, I wasn’t expecting to be a reptile caretaker, but I fell in love with a guy who had a lil snake (now she’s a big noodle, her name is Udon).

Then a few years ago, my heart attached to an adult chameleon who had grown up in a shop. We bought him the biggest enclosure they had, spent a month decking it out…this thing has a mister, lights and heat lamps on a timer, his own living tree and many fake branches and vines to climb..and brought him home. Never thought I’d be buying a bag of crickets weekly, but here we are!

He’s now reaching old age. He’s always grumpy and I’m the only one who has ever been able to hold him, which only happens when we deep clean his enclosure. But I feel like we’ve given him a good life.

3

u/boudicas_shield 11h ago

I have a friend with a pet frog and she’s similar to you, very knowledgeable and responsible about it. She loves her frog because he’s a cool little animal to watch, but she’s aware that he’s not capable of complex emotions or attachment and never acts otherwise.Ā

2

u/CoyoteMother666 10h ago

Aw! I love that! Frogs are so cool!

3

u/BadAtExisting 10h ago

I had turtles for several years. Had an asshole roommate bring 2 baby red eared sliders in from outside because they were ā€œcuteā€ then moved out and left them because they were too much. I had a baby pool they chilled outside (supervised) in and their tank was the length of my wall and I kept it clean and tried to make a true habitat. But it was a lot. They kept growing. I eventually tapped out and donated them to a reptile park where they still live in a natural habitat. I still come to see them. They used to flap all over when they heard me. They don’t anymore but that’s okay. I’m happy they’re happy and thriving. I just wish my roommate left them be in the retention pond all those years ago

1

u/iJon_v2 11h ago

I think so too sometimes.

I also don’t like when people put collars on cats? What’s the point? To make them look cute? Most of the time they’re way too tight and what’s the purpose anyway?

-4

u/No_Professional_8992 11h ago

Same can be said for any other animal people keep as pets. They're not humans and will never love/feel the way you do.

2

u/Feema13 9h ago

How do you know that?

-1

u/No_Professional_8992 9h ago

Because they literally don't have the same makeup as us to precieve the way we do? Are you deadass asking how do I know a cow can't have human emotions? ITS NOT HUMAN lol. Do you expect a fish to feel the same as a cat???

2

u/Feema13 8h ago

I am ā€˜deadass’ asking you that though.
According to your understanding, is grief a purely human emotion or could cows feel it as well? What about love? What about fear?
Have you done much reading on this? The Earth species project would be a good website to start, or even more accessibly you could look up Alex the African Grey. He seemed to have a range of emotions that certainly seem human. Ditto coco the gorilla. I’m convinced that all the animals have a range of emotions and a depth of intelligence that we are yet to comprehend fully. I’m not so sure about you though.

-2

u/No_Professional_8992 8h ago

Once again, do you think a cow feels the same as a cat? Animals can experience THEIR forms of grief sure, but they're not experiencing human emotions. I can't believe that has to be explained. Also, it wouldn't surprise that animals that are evolutionarily close to human COULD share SIMILAR human emotions, but they're still distinct in that they're of THEIR species. Please stop personifying animals. They are their own beings with their own autonomy and existence. We don't need to equate them to humans to respect them.

1

u/Easy-Barnacle5734 11h ago

I absolutely agree. I’m happy to be pet free, but I have respect for good owners who keep things in check and safe. Can’t stand a poorly trained dog/cat/ or whatever.

1

u/No_Professional_8992 11h ago

I am also pet free. The thought of "owning" another being freaks me out. Respect for those who respect the animals they have though.

3

u/CoyoteMother666 10h ago

Thank you for at least respecting the respectful caretakers. At this day and age — someone has to do it.

There are so many captive-breed critters trapped in a bad situation. Not trying to say anyone should go buying from a breeder at all, but if you have to desire and capability to bring a creature in need in, it never goes unappreciated. Whether the creature can thank you or even think about it at all.

3

u/Murderous_Intention7 12h ago

God, I’d never. I absolutely love snakes, obviously, and have two of my own, but they’re basically wild animals. They don’t bite, granted, but they run off pure instinct. The second that snake gets hungry and isn’t fed on time…

3

u/msfluckoff 4h ago

She's also risking the health of the snake!!! What if the other pets attack or kill? A voiceless, captive animal does not deserve to be put in an abusive situation due to their owner being irresponsible and uneducated about pet care, or is absent from any unpredictable situation.

2

u/rumple___ 3h ago

yup!! not only are the cats a massive risk if they bite or scratch it, she also has this snake around a nervy large Rottweiler šŸ™„

6

u/TheCharalampos 10h ago

I think the snake is in way more danger than the cats.

-1

u/rumple___ 7h ago

Theyre both in equal danger babes

2

u/neveruseyourrealname 12h ago

And then she'll be the first to post about the inevitable tradegy and want all the sympathy. Someone needs to call animal control.

2

u/AlwaysDTFmyself 8h ago

People like this shouldn't be allowed to own animals.

2

u/CosmicBewie 5h ago

This is a stupid experiment with all their lives. Zero reason to tempt fate.

2

u/JewelerBorn802 3h ago

I’m genuinely asking, how is this so different from dogs and cats/cats and bunnies or anything like that?

5

u/rumple___ 3h ago

Snakes aren’t trainable in the sense that you cant teach them a dog, cat, etc, is a friend and something that shouldn’t be eaten. Whereas with cats and dogs you can train them to not to eat/attack something. Snakes don’t have the have mental or emotional capacity to understand it. The fact that something hasn’t happened yet isn’t because the snake thinks they’re family and more that it just isn’t hungry.

1

u/JewelerBorn802 1h ago

Thanks that makes sense, I don’t know much about snakes.

1

u/BenWallace04 1h ago

You can’t really domesticate a snake.

2

u/heymookie 3h ago

Hoooooly shit. How can someone who has a Python that size be SO UNEDUCATED about their behavior. They’re wild animals. They’re not domesticated/friends with your cats. They’re just not hungry right now.

Wait until the day she has them socialize before feeding the big guy………..🫣

3

u/dandadone_with_life 12h ago

this is dangerous for the cats, definitely, but it's dangerous for the snake too. you shouldn't house cats with basically any exotic animal. cat saliva and the bacteria under their nails is so, so toxic to animals. even a scratch can get infected so quickly

1

u/Tardisgoesfast 12h ago

I’d expect mutual assured destruction.

1

u/Sterlinghawk16 12h ago

Absolutely F’ing clueless. I have read enough stories where at one point the bigger she gets the more hungry all the time she will get. First the cats will be ate. 2nd (this has been on the news many times) the owner will be squished. If it was me I would report the owner and get those cats out of there.

0

u/btbam666 9h ago

Snake people are weird.

3

u/soconae 5h ago

This woman doesn’t represent all snake keepers. She’s just stupid as hell.

2

u/rumple___ 5h ago

Im a ā€œsnake personā€ would never do this shit.

Most of us are normal. Shes just a whackjob

0

u/Aidacus1911 3h ago

youre weird man

2

u/btbam666 3h ago

Hell yeah brother.

0

u/UnicornWitch133 7h ago

That’s a fucking Python! Oh my God! The kittens, the python, and the owner are all in danger! That python needs to be in an enclosure, stat!

-18

u/BookWormPerson 18h ago

On one hand yeah that's stupid.

But way faster snakes can't do shit about cats so it's not going to get them.

Cat reaction speed is insane.

13

u/wishIcouldgoback_ 16h ago

I had the misfortune to see a video of a snake doing exactly that.

They can and absolutely will catch a cat, even if some/most are fast enough to avoid a strike. Unless, I guess, her house is cool enough for the snake to be too slow.

20

u/rumple___ 18h ago

Have you seen how quickly snakes can strike? A cat who has a false sense of security wont react quickly enough to a hungry snake.

8

u/LadyGrey_oftheAbyss 16h ago

Cats don't really get a false sense of security like people- Both the cats and the snake pick up signals that only people who know and are paying attention will be able to see - Cat activity hunt snakes - inculding venomous because they are very good at dodging snake strikes - the cats are a significantly larger risk to the snake then the snake will ever be to the cats- I highly doubt this woman would ever all the snake and the cats be unsupervised for the simple fact that a playful bite or such would be life threatening even to this giant - That being said there's a hard rule about never being alone with a free roaming snake like this which is probably the biggest issue here

5

u/BookWormPerson 17h ago

You clearly didn't see cats just slapping snakes that try to get them .

https://youtu.be/JOGNSbGijD4

Any snake that strangles is slower than one with venom.

I am not defending them but the outside of extremely old or otherwise for some reason unnaturally slow cat it will not get one.

16

u/rumple___ 17h ago

Again, there is a difference between a cat who is alert around snakes and a cat who is in a false sense of security around snakes. Even alert cats can get bitten or grabbed. Cats get killed by snakes (venomous or not) on a frequent basis in Australia. Lots eaten by 8ft+ scrub pythons. Wanna tell me again how it wont happen because the cat’s reaction time is just so awesome?

These cats think this snake is a friend. They aren’t alert around it. They’ll have a crappier reaction time.

-16

u/nashbradley 17h ago

Cants dont think anything is friend. Cats choose to accept living in homes because its convenient.

They dont even think of you as friend. Just as something to be manipulated.

14

u/rumple___ 17h ago

Fuck i’m over this stereotype of cats 🫩

-19

u/nashbradley 17h ago

Disprove it then. Do something extreme in which a dog would follow you and see if your stupid ass cat would too.

NEWSFLASH! They won’t.

There is no ā€œloveā€ and no ā€œbondā€
You are fodder and you enjoy it, just accept that. It’d probably help your physical relationships if you realized that too.

12

u/Mr_Mahn777 16h ago

https://giphy.com/gifs/bmLlSndzhqWgWb3vXW

Reddit moment!!! Chill out chud you aren’t special and you definitely have no clue what you’re talking about.

11

u/arakinas 16h ago

Cats were differently domesticated that dogs. They do think different, and they need to be treated different. Cats, even in the wild, have friends of other cats. True, that their main driver is based on whether they have their basic needs met, and will, if need be, take care of themselves first, usually, just like people will. But saying they don't or can't love people, or each other, is extremely ignorant.

9

u/HerWildestDreams 16h ago

My friend. I have two cats who are my world. They lay on me, one begs to be held like a baby (literallllyyy), and since I am dealing with chronic pain from a lumbar disability, they flock to me in bed on my bad days and stay by me.

So. Please tell me there’s no love. I think when they sit by the door to greet us, come running while vibrating their tails straight up (which is their excited hello), there is love and attachment of some sort. Just because cats don’t like YOU doesn’t mean they have NO bonds whatsoever with other people. You probably feel unsafe. Unsafe means they won’t come to you. Womp womp.

8

u/SkyV3n0m 14h ago

That’s debatable because my cats follow me everywhere and come to me when called

12

u/rumple___ 17h ago

ā€œstupid ass catā€ tells me everything i need to know about you šŸ˜‚

12

u/wishIcouldgoback_ 16h ago

Ofc it's a porn addicted man saying this

4

u/Short_Cabinet_7593 13h ago

My cats run to my dad and always jump up on me wanting to snuggle. You’ve just had bad interactions with cats before, that doesn’t mean they’re all bad.

3

u/DillyDillyMilly 6h ago

So why does my cat follow me everywhere and insist on being held all the time?

9

u/LadyGrey_oftheAbyss 16h ago

You do know that cats have actively run into burning buildings/rooms to save their humans - right?

3

u/HerWildestDreams 16h ago

The one video where the cat chases off the dog attacking his little kid, older one, but that comes to mind here.

-17

u/BookWormPerson 17h ago

Cats only care about food and a place to sleep.

We are just good at getting them that and most realize being nice is better than being an asshole which is why they trust us.

A cold noodle doesn't give food or comfort so it can just fuck itself as far as a cat would be concerned.

12

u/LadyGrey_oftheAbyss 16h ago

This is a myth - don't get a cat if this is all.you think they will need - You need to socially engage with athem otherwise they become anxiety ridden stress balls - one of the risks here is that if they get comfortable they could try and play with the snake - killing it

-2

u/SkyV3n0m 14h ago

That’s debatable while yes it’s rare for a snake to develop a loving bond with it’s owner it does happen and it’s happened to me I used to have an 8 foot boa that was my emotional support animal and anytime I was more depressed than normal it would squeeze me tighter than usual almost like it was saying ā€œit’s okay I’m hereā€

-7

u/NuclearHateLizard 14h ago

This broad is the physical manifestation of cope
