Leviton “EV rated” 1450R failures

I’d seen reports of the threads in the new Leviton EV-specific 14-50R stripping out before reaching the 75 in-lb rated torque and I wanted to verify whether that was a real problem and see why, so I bought one, and also bought a Bryant 9450FR.

Yes, it’s a problem.  The first one I tried started to feel like it was yielding at about 50 in-lbs and the torque peaked at 55 before dropping.  The next one started to yield around 60 in-lbs and peaked about 65 in-lbs.

I also went through Amazon and Home-Depot  reviews and found all of the reviews that mention torque—which I assume is most of the reviewers who actually used a torque tool and counted how many reported failures. 80%, or 39 of the 49 reported receptacles, were failures.  Among the 10 successes were four people who reported torquing to spec with no problem and 6 people who kept returning them until they got one that worked, often on the third or fourth try.

Of course the Bryant had no problem with full rated torque.  I might try pushing it to failure for the sake of science, but I’ll keep it in working order for now.  But taking it apart to compare, the terminals are in fact a bigger thread (3/8” ≈ 9.5 mm vs. 8 mm nominal), and the metal it threads into is twice as thick.  I’ll put a more detailed comparison in the comments.

My conclusion is the new EV-specific Levitons are not reliable and should not be used.  Even if you get one that, by luck, doesn’t strip, it will be at the threshold of yielding and might fail after some thermal cycles.

Getting started with home charging

We have a new wiki page with an introduction to home charging.

It includes sections on:

  • Level 2 charging rates/currents

  • Choosing an EVSE

  • Plug-in or hardwired

There's also a second page with detailed information on service capacity and load management: how to assess how much room you have for additional loads with in the capacity of your electric service, and ways to accommodate high-rate charging with limited capacity.

Finally, there's a page on recommended chargers.

Use the comments section to recommend improvements to the wiki; for question about your situation, make a new post.

Melted 14-50

Decided to die today. It was installed by an electrician my company hired. Been working for 2+ years now but today it decided to melt. I think its always overheated but for some reason on this cool day (60F) it failed instead of the 104F days we've had this summer.

Can someone identify this as a cheap ass Leviton from just seeing the front like this (it is a leviton)? I have no idea why the prongs inside the phase plugs are so strange looking either, why do they look like they're only half of the actual length?

Blew our breaker and we'll have to replace both the EV charger plug and this socket. Gonna strongly recommend the $50 EV rated ones from Home Depot.

Any benefit to buying this wire for EV charging?

Doesn’t appear to be able to be used as permanent wiring. Is this worth purchasing? it’s about 22 feet long. Any use cases that would warrant buying it?

Question - interrupted, hot L2 charger

So I've had my Autel level 2 charger for about 2 years. We've owned, in that time, a Kona EV, an Ioniq 5, and now own 2 Niro EVs. So I'm not new to this.

But last night I was charging my (2023 Wind) Niro, and my kid was taking the garbage can down at night and tripped on the cable. about 30 minutes later I saw a notification (i'd missed it earlier) that the charge was interrupted. I asked the kid, they admitted they tripped on it. I assumed it'd been pulled loose and went out to put it back in. But the handle was HOT. A little uncomfortable to hold even. I laid it over the charger and came back 30 minutes later. The front of the connector was no longer hot but the back of it was still warm. Still, i plugged it in and the car charged the rest of the way, no problem - tho my husband did unplug it when it was done, just to be safe.

So - does anyone know what happened? Is it possible the connection was loosened and maybe arcing or something? how could it be that hot if it had stopped the charge? any way to figure it out?

India Main MCB fire damaged my EV charger setup —Filing an insurance claim (Zuno), looking for advice

Hi everyone,

Recently had an incident at home where the main MCB caught fire. The fire spread to my EV charger's wall mount and the charger itself. Right now, the wall mount is half-burnt and unusable, and the charger cable has melted in a few places.

The car and the damaged components are currently at the workshop, and I am at the stage where Zuno Insurance has appointed a surveyor to inspect the claim.

This is my first time experiencing an accident like this and going through an insurance claim process. Just looking for your overall opinions and advice:

* What should I expect or keep in mind during the surveyor stage?

* Has anyone dealt with Zuno Insurance or a similar charger claim before, and how did the process go for you?

Appreciate any straightforward tips on how to navigate this from here.

North America Resort in Reno ripped out all except Tesla chargers

One of the huge Casino Resorts in Reno ripped out all the Non-Tesla charging stations, leaving only Tesla. They had others but now they are gone.

Hotels.com advertises EV Charging which is why I stayed there.

Can anyone imagine why they would do such a thing?

Why are DCFCs so unreliable

So often I pull up to a charging station and there's some sort of problem with at least one of the plugs. Today pull up to an 8 plug station (4 CCS, 4 NACS), and it took me three tries to get a charge. One the payment was broken, one the charger wouldn't initialize.

It's rare that I pull up to a station where something isn't broken somewhere. Could you imagine if gas pumps were this unreliable?

What about these make them so unreliable. Even payment systems, which isn't new technology, seem to fail on them.

DIY question

You all were so helpful with my last question. We need to install a 240V NEMA 6-20 plug for a level 1&2 charger which requires a 20a double pole breaker. Is there room in my little baby sub panel to accommodate this? It's in a pretty remote area and I'd prefer to do it myself if possible and safe to do so. Any advice appreciated.

Future Proofing EV Charger Install

Hi, I'm looking to install a new hardwired EV charger in my home for my VW ID.4 that has the J1772 charger, but I recently read that most US new EVs will have the NACS charger in the future. I'm currently leasing the ID.4 for another 2 years so I'm wondering if it would it be smarter to get the NACS charger and a J1772 adapter instead of a J1772 charger now. Thoughts?

Also, my electrical company has rebates on the Emporia or ChargePoint chargers. I was looking to go with the Emporia Pro but I'm open to opinions.

North America Quote Check (US)

Post image

*Update - after comments here - EVSE is being installed for $350; I'm providing the EVSE.

I’ve been quoted the installation of a Nema 14-50R receptacle for $450, I’ve attached a photo of the run. Want to check that’s a good quote/estimate. Cable is coming straight through the wall (that’s where my panel is located) and then to the corner (about 10ft-15ft of cable needed..

50amp breaker included in the price too.

Grizzl-e, Autel, Tesla Wall Connector or Tesla UMC?

Privately owned single home with enclosed garage and two phevs. Grid up, service capacity is a total non-issue, but grid down, the whole home is limited to 75a continuous on 240V.

Currently, both vehicles are charged with generic level 1 chargers on 15a circuits. One driver averages ~100 miles per day and the other ~70. Both vehicles arrive fully depleted and needing a full charge every night which is ~10kwh on one and ~15kwh on the other. Both drivers regularly are using gas every day to supplement the insufficient EV range. The level 1 units have been sufficient, but we are looking at getting a full BEV and it won't be able to keep up for the full needed driving range, so an upgrade is needed.

We aren't set on any specific BEV, so J1772 vs NACS is still a debate and max charge rate of the vehicle is unknown. I feel drawn to 4 EVSEs in particular and would appreciate some feedback on them.

Grizzle-e 80A Ultimate:

80a capability to be able to charge the most capable of vehicles as fast as possible.

Cheaper upfront than Autel ($720 vs $910)

Natively NACS which is likely what the industry is moving towards

Autel Maxicharge 80a:

Same 80a capability as Grizzl-e

Eligible to enroll in local utility incentive for $10 or $25 per month depending on program (Grizzl-e and Tesla UMC are not eligible)

Tesla Wall connector:

Cheaper than the two above (at $660)

Eligible for the $10 or $25 per month incentive

Natively NACS with a built-in adapter for J1772

Only supports 48a

Tesla UMC:

Cheap, easy, and portable ($300)

Only supports 32a

Enrolling in the utility program limits charging to a 7 hour window each day. Using the least favorable numbers, let's say 2 mi/kwh and round it up to 140 miles per day. That "extreme' use case would require just over 40a of charging capacity. I can't realistically justify wanting the 80a units... but I want it for some reason. Also, the vast majority of vehicles are 48a or less, so it realistically shouldn't matter anyway. This makes be want the Tesla Wall connector, and it's eligible for the utility program.

The Autel unit feels like a close second. Same utility program, but higher power. If it was price matched with Tesla, it would be the clear winner.

Grizzl-e feels solid because it's $190 less than Autel, but no utility incentive. It will take 8 or 18 months to make up that difference. Both units should absolutely outlast that difference, so I don't know why I'm drawn to the cheaper unit.

The UMC can provide the max charge rate of either car we currently have at 32a, but I suspect future vehicles will charge faster. Even so, at $330 less than the wall connector, that's a minimum of 14 months to reach breakeven.

What are your thoughts? Opinions? Other recommendations?

North America GFCI breaker for EV charger trips when it rains

I have a 240V outlet in my garage, installed by a licensed electrician. The Eaton breaker is in the basement, and I use a Honda charger. I've noticed that sometimes when it rains, the breaker trips, even when the car isn't plugged into the charger. I don't see any moisture getting into the area. Could humidity be causing this? Has anyone dealt with something similar?
