Alt. Firmwares Drizzlet alpha 2: community firmware for Mutable Instruments Beads (self-play on request, monophonic grains)

• Upvotes

Drizzlet is a community firmware for Beads, built on the source Mutable Instruments released this month. Alpha 2 is out.

New in alpha 2: - Self-play on request: a new option stops Beads starting self-play by itself; with no inputs patched and FREEZE off, hold MEDIA for 1.5 s to start or stop it. - Monophonic grains: Mutable Instruments' previously unreleased mode, toggled with MEDIA+SEED; as Mutable Instruments noted, it works well only with the first two SHAPE envelopes (square and decay). - Bug fixes in the released source: less flash wear when an LFO or long gates drive FREEZE, a delay clock glitch, and a frozen-delay slice bug.

From alpha 1: - Output limiter option: Stock, Fast release or Off, set on a new options page (hold ASSIGN for 3 s). - Safer frozen-buffer saves: checked when loaded, and a save that was cut short is never restored. - Bug fixes in the released source: out-of-bounds and uninitialized reads (frozen delay, synth mode, CPU padding), and buffer saves that could fail or be marked complete when they weren't.

Crackle: at the settings people reported, our test module clicked on the 2021 and 2024 firmware but not on Drizzlet; the fix is in Mutable Instruments' released source.

Download and install notes: https://github.com/insolentconstruct/eurorack/releases/tag/drizzlet-2026.10.16

It's an alpha: read the README first and install at your own risk. Not a Mutable Instruments product.

Testing: 125 tests in 11 host test programs (693 assertions) covering 110 of 117 manual behaviours (3 only in part), 112 deliberate-fault mutations, 531 injected power-loss and flash-error points, byte-reproducible builds, emulator comparisons, and checks on a real module. Details: https://github.com/insolentconstruct/eurorack/blob/drizzlet/beads/build/TESTING.md

Next (Beta 1, tentative): buffer trim (Mutable Instruments' own disabled feature, made to survive a save), pitch quantization, Clouds-style diffusion and reverb if CPU allows, and, if headroom remains, Arbhar-style grain starts on recorded attacks. Roadmap, ranked by requests; comment on an issue to vote: https://github.com/insolentconstruct/eurorack/issues/32

Question / Discussion Does your Eurorack BlueBox Mixer Screen Blink?

I used a brand new Eurorack version BlueBox Mixer in my Behringer Eurorack Go where the Mixer was Blinking. I then upgraded to a Doepfer A-100 PSU3 because I thought power was the problem. 20 Minutes in, started blinking. Both were trialed at 100% Brightness.

When I turned the brightness down, it stopped blinking. Thing is, I want to use it at 100% without it blinking.

I'm going to return it for a new one, but wanted to ask if anyone else's blinked? I'm worried about waiting for a whole new one only to have it blink again :T..

Question / Discussion questions about the nightlife mixers from ALA

Hello! sorry if this is the wrong place to ask this, but I have a couple of questions about the ALA nightlife series of mixers.

The product page mentions that you can use a barback directly with one of the 2hp outs, which seems like a pretty great way of getting a teeny tiny super feature rich mixer, that you can easily add more channels to as you go. has anyone done this successfully? does it work well? also, it seems like it might be possible to add an extra send/return with the 2hp module and the 2hp vcas by wiring things up at the back in a certain way, but it's hard to tell - has anyone tried this? i like that it scales, but having to add that massive matrix for a bunch more sends is very space consuming. it would be awesome if they did a smaller, standalone module that just added one extra set of sends.

Question / Discussion Euro rack cases

Hi all, after my first case.

Two good options have come up.

Intelligel 84hp performance case with the line out 1u module, headphone out 1u and soft carry case,

Or

Tiptop Mantis 104hp.

The Mantis is slightly less than half the price, and bigger. Wondering what if anyone has any opinions on these options, and whether the Intelligel would have any magical powers or anything?

So far have the Moog Labyrinth, and want to build on this. Drums will be taken care of out of the box.

Cheers guys!

Question / Discussion Weird behavior when powering on

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Please check out the attached video. I hadn’t used my euro rack system for awhile and plugged it in today. Turned it on and I noticed that some modules appear to not be functioning normally. The missing panel in the top left is when I had my intellijel I/O module. The input and output gain were fully lit up (I know it’s not included in the video).

I also noticed my bubble sound oscillators didn’t seem to be making sound and the rate led was fully red (typically adjusting the tuning down to low audio rate and sub audio is visible by the led blinking but it did not seem to change at all)

Any idea what’s goin on here

UPDATE:
It turns out I plugged the wrong power supply from another case I have into the intellijel case. Unfortunately it seems like I blew the board on the intellijel case. Modules seem fine though so that’s a relief

News / Updates Demo of Filternator (passive resonator module) from Kanawha Music and Art

I picked this module up at Knobcon this year and just put together a little demo and tutorial.

It's a passive (0ma) module that uses switchable capacitors and inductors to discretely set the filter frequency and Q. As a high-Q filter, it acts more like a resonator.

(Note: this video is going live at 10AM US Pacific time - I'm posting a few minutes in advance in case anyone wants to join the live chat then 😺)

Case / Rack Share Planning this case, am I missing anything?

I own some modules (not even half of them). I want to make techno-ish stuff, IDM, dark drones, that sort of vibe. I have a Dirtywave M8 that I can use as a sequencer, and to add pads, samples and chords to my sound.

What would you change?

I'm looking at getting a module from this site. https://audivora.co.uk/

Had anyone ordered from them? Are they a legitimate company?

News / Updates Transforming a "saw" envelope and sine CV with BXR. 1.3 firmware available. In stock

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

A quick Demo video running an envelope and sine wave LFO into the BXR and getting variations of mangled control voltage. The audio is a static Sawtooth wave being filtered, and the filter being modulated by the mangled CV. For context, the CV input sources are all either a simple Saw style ADSR or sine wave.

This is running firmware 1.3 which adds one feature - In LFO mode, when a clock is plugged in to the Pitch 1/O input, the pitch knob becomes a clock multiplier/divider, allowing the internal LFO to sync to things.

Question / Discussion Thoughts on Confundo Funkidos?

I’m considering picking up a NE Confundo Funkidos to add more hands on control and variation to rhythms I make with Intellijel Steppy. I would use Pamela’s Pro Workout for the paired rhythms. I have some questions for users of the module or its predecessor and I’m interested to hear your general impressions and how you use it.

  1. How carefully do you find you have to program the paired rhythms to get musical results along the cross fade? Could I, for example, program a four-part rhythm sequence I like in Steppy and then pair these sequences with any random or Euclidean sequences from PPW and expect usable results, or does the pairing take more careful consideration?
  2. I suppose it depends on how different and sparse/dense your paired rhythms are, but how much variation do you find you get across the length of the cross fade? Do you find you can settle on a number of fairly distinct rhythms, or does the probabilistic nature of the cross fade make the whole length of the cross fade parameter feel somewhat random?
  3. How useful do you find the algorithmically defined accents? Are they generally always usable, rarely, or in between? Similar to my first question, does this depend on how carefully you programmed your input sequences?
  4. How useful do you find the Burn knob in adding variation to your patterns?

Question / Discussion I put together some guides for some of my most used and most complicated modules (hermod+, lubadh & morphagene) - free resource w/ pdf download

Hi there! I am a big manual reader, I print out manuals for all of my modules and keep a binder next to my workstation, but sometimes I just want to find the information I need a little quicker.

I put together some quick use guides for these modules, hosted on GitHub for future updates and easy accessibility. Each guide is 100% free to use, download, print. The first 3 modules I decided to tackle from my rig are the Hermod+, Lubadh and Morphagene, let me know if you'd be interested in seeing a traveller's guide for your favorite module.

I'm always open to feedback, please let me know if you find a mistake or something that doesn't make sense, these are for the community to have easy access to complicated information quickly, not to slow you down with misinformation.

big shoutouts to the companies that make these modules and to Tom Mueller and Jonathan Hickman for the style inspiration.

Question / Discussion From Science Teacher to Synth Visionary

Hey everyone!

I recently had the chance to sit down with Girts Ozolins, founder of Erica Synths, for a conversation about modular synthesis that goes beyond specs and features.

We talked about the ideas, communities, and creative thinking behind the machines, the development of Eurorack modules, and how a company approaches building instruments in such a constantly evolving scene.

I wanted to explore the thinking behind the instruments, not just the instruments themselves.

Watch the full interview here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KknJXcq0PQg

I'd love to hear your thoughts, since this video revolves a lot around community and how it shapes an entire field and makes connections. I want to hear from the community itself

Alt. Firmwares Bitbox Micro firmware patch, 2.3.8-mod is out, Invert UI, MIDI Clock Hold and Program Change control

I maintain a small firmware patch for the Bitbox Micro that puts more of the module on MIDI, and 2.3.8-mod is ready for release with three new features accessed on the Settings screen.

  • Flip UI turns the screen, for a module mounted upside down.
  • Clk Loss keeps the last tempo when the clock drops out, instead of falling back to 120. Beat-synced delays and LFOs stay where they were, through preset changes, until a clock returns.
  • ProgChange gains NEW ONLY, which ignores a Program Change for the preset already loaded. A sequencer that resends the same request every pattern no longer reloads the preset and swallows its first notes.

Not from 1010music, can't brick it, bring your own stock firmware, don't pass the patched firmware around. Details in the guide.

Full guide, including what each control does and how to set your presets up so it works:

Question / Discussion Rasgo Modular — a free, open-source software modular where the cables themselves do things (Linux / Windows / macOS)

Post image
4 Upvotes

Hi everyone!

I've been developing Rasgo Modular, a standalone software modular synth written in C++. It's free and open source (AGPLv3), runs on Linux, Windows and macOS, and has 58 modules to explore and combine.

To be clear up front: it's software, not a Eurorack module. But a lot of it grew out of thinking about Eurorack.

What makes it different: the cables aren't just wires. Each cable has its own state:

- Conduction: a cable can let the signal through only part of the time, at random, like a Bernoulli gate built into every patch cord.

- Relation: a cable can combine what it carries with a second signal (ring mod, wavefolding or difference), a bit like having a Warps inside the cable.

- Rupture: break a cable and the sound doesn't just cut. It repeats the last bit it carried, fading out like a scar.

It opens with a generated patch (a seed) already playing. You can play it as it is, tweak it, rewire it, or press n to pull every cable and start from scratch. The same seed number always brings back the same patch.

It's an independent project with no funding, driven by research, curiosity and a love of modular synthesis.

Feedback is very welcome, especially from people who think in hardware.

- Site: https://lucioaraujo.github.io/rasgo-modular/

- Downloads & source: https://github.com/lucioaraujo/rasgo-modular

(The app isn't signed by Apple or Microsoft yet, so the first launch shows a warning. The install page explains what to do.)

Question / Discussion I built a free website where complete beginners can learn to patch

Post image
117 Upvotes

I've been patching an AE Modular synth for years and now I'm slowly working towards building my first eurorack system. As a software engineer by day, I've always wondered why there wasn't an easy way to learn/experiment with modular.

VCV rack is really cool, but I always thought that there shouldn't be a need to download anything - there are plenty of web libraries available to build a great modular experience that you can access in just one click.

So I build a weekend project: Ostra! You get a full simulation of a capable system with dozens of modules, as well as a full step-by-step tutorial that can teach anyone the basics in about 15 minutes. Afterwards, you can spend hours patching pretty much anything - I even have a full sample player/granular synth where you can upload your own .WAV files. You can also record your jams and download them instantly. There is no login, no download and it doesn't cost anything. It runs fully in your browser.

Would love some feedback from the Eurorack community!

  • does the patching feel good? I'm trying to make it feel fun and playful and as physical as it can be given it's all running in a web app
  • does the tutorial miss any key concepts? any particular analogies that helped you understand the process better?
  • would you like to see any modules added? I tried to keep the module count small to start, but expressive enough for many use cases. everything from dance music to complex generative stuff.
  • always looking for cool ideas that are only possible in an app! for example, you can hover over any output and instantly see an oscilloscope without having to patch anything. I find this really intuitive for debugging patches and there's no real equivalent with a physical system.

Try it here: https://ostra.fm/learn
