Your school board hopes you have a short memory

• Upvotes

Specifically EUSD.  When voting season comes, even informed voters often don’t have thorough insights into all the candidates.  Because of this, incumbents have a huge advantage, typically winning 90% of the time. They become the default -- no matter how poorly they serve their constituents.

Your school board has not served you well.

For starters, the board majority voted themselves a 400% pay raise in February of this year.  Done far enough away from the election that they know you’ve forgotten about it by now.  400% raise! That means $2,000 a month PLUS benefits, all for attending one or two meetings a month.  Nice work if you can get it, but haha, you can’t get it, no matter how qualified you might be. Keep reading.

There has been a lot of press about board member Mark Olsen taking a job in Utah in March, but delaying his resignation until July when his vacant seat could no longer be put on the regular November ballot.  Just google it if you want to be angrier.  This was THEN followed by the board majority conveniently declining to hold a special election for the 2.5 YEARS remaining on Olsen’s term. They chose instead to appoint someone, because apparently they aren’t fond of letting voters choose when there’s no locked-in incumbent.

The board is obviously smarter than voters because instead of picking one of an array of seasoned and well qualified applicants, including a former EUSD assistant superintendent, they chose a 27 year old political consultant with previous ties to two of the board members.  Find the youtube video of the school board meeting erupting in shock and anger when that was announced.

One solitary board member, Doug Paulson, deserves credit for voting AGAINST the 400% raise, AGAINST choosing appointment over special election, and AGAINST the appointment of a connected political consultant to the board.  THAT’S the kind of integrity and no-nonsense representation we need on the EUSD board. YOU can help make Doug part of a new board majority by voting for Shulok, Cascio, and Wagner.

Grading next to Harmony Grove

The other day, I drove by Harmony Grove and noticed a bunch of wooden walls being erected and areas being graded directly adjacent to the homes. I was curious to know what project is underway, whether it’s more homes being built or something else.

Community backlash mounts over proposed ice arena in Escondido

Since the Ice-Plex permanently closed in 2020, Escondido has had no ice rinks.

So when the Rinks Foundation proposed building a 3,000-seat ice arena at Kit Carson Park, it seemed like a perfect match.

The facility would serve as the practice arena for the San Diego Gulls and also house a restaurant and retail space. The three-rink complex would also be open for ice sports for local residents.

In June, when the Escondido City Council approved the memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Rinks Foundation to explore the feasibility of building at Kit Carson Park, residents were not happy.

“Conversations had been going on for actually several years (between the city) and the Rinks, in regard to this proposed project,” said Melissa Petri, one of the founders of the group Save Kit Carson Park.

She said residents were caught off-guard.

“This is a public-private partnership that they're asking for, and this should serve Escondido residents first, and not the Rinks or the Gulls or any third-party organization,” Petri said.

The Rinks Foundation is a nonprofit run by the billionaire owners of the San Diego Gulls and Anaheim Ducks.

On Wednesday, the group held a rally in front of Escondido City Hall to get their message across to the city council members. They want the city to keep the park as-is.

“They're proposing to put it in a location where we have existing softball fields,” Petri said. “We have four softball fields that are heavily used by the community. Adult leagues play there. Girls leagues play there, and baseball also overflows into those fields. They're heavily, heavily used fields.”

Under the proposal, the ice arena would replace those fields. The Rinks Foundation would pay the city $4 million to move those fields to a nearby park. But Petri said that wouldn't cover the costs.

“I have spoken with experts who estimate it to cost $8 to $12 million to actually rebuild four softball fields in an alternative location,” she said. “So that does not cover all the costs, and there's an extensive cost.”

Since the MOU approval in June, at least one city council member has changed their mind.

“Since we brought (the MOU) forward, the community has been in an uproar,” Councilmember Consuelo Martinez said.

She now said Kit Carson is not the right location for the project.

“I do want them to have a place in the city, but I would not support it being in Kit Carson Park,” Martinez said. “However, I won't be voting on that because I'll be out of office by then.”

In a statement to KPBS, a city spokesperson said the City Council directed staff in August to assess other city properties to see if they’ll meet the proposed project's needs.

Once that’s done, they will bring it to the council for discussion.

Governor Gavin Newsom, Head of California Public Utilities Commission John Reynolds and SDGE corruption is why your rates are so high...

Post image

The current head of the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) is John Reynolds, who serves as the Commission President.

Governor Gavin Newsom designated Reynolds as President on February 18, 2026, and he officially took office on March 9, 2026.

While John Reynolds does not have ties to the energy utility sector, his past work in the private tech sector has drawn scrutiny. Before joining the CPUC, he served as managing counsel for Cruise, General Motors' autonomous vehicle subsidiary.

In late 2023, labor unions (like the Teamsters) and safety advocates fiercely demanded Reynolds' resignation from the CPUC after he voted to approve citywide expansion permits for Cruise and Waymo robotaxis in San Francisco. Critics pointed to his past employment at Cruise as a blatant conflict of interest, alleging he prioritized corporate profits over public safety. While this was a transportation utility dispute rather than an energy utility issue, it fueled ongoing public skepticism regarding his independence from corporate influence.

Because CPUC Commissioners are not elected by the public, their primary political connection runs through the Governor who appoints them.

Watchdog groups have frequently pointed out that Sempra Energy (the parent company of SDG&E) and other major investor-owned utilities are massive political donors in California, having contributed tens of thousands of dollars to Newsom's past campaigns and related political funds. Activists argue that this dynamic naturally creates a pro-utility bias across the entire governor-appointed Commission, regardless of individual members' resumes.

Critics of the CPUC often argue that the agency operates with systemic favoritism toward utilities, pointing to a long history of approved rate increases and high guaranteed profit margins (Return on Equity) for companies like SDG&E.

An investigation by the watchdog group Consumer Watchdog documented that California's three largest investor-owned utilities (Sempra, PG&E, and Southern California Edison) spent a combined $127.6 million to influence state government. Of that total political spending, approximately $962,500 went directly toward supporting Governor Newsom, his campaign accounts, and his ballot initiatives.

Illegal use of utility poles for hanging campaign signs

I have been on the phone with City Hall for the last 2 days, over reports and pictures coming to me, with local candidates posting their campaign signs on utility poles, which is illegal. The area that I have heard about are about 10 poles in the Midway area, and 1 right outside of Citracado Dental, on El Norte Parkway. There have been 4 local candidates who the city admitted were in violation and have taken down the signs. Those in violation of the law were Escondido Mayor Dane White, Escondido Deputy Mayor Joe Garcia, candidate for City Council Tanner Horsely, and David Vincent for School Board. The 2 city staffers who I spoke with were very helpful and knowledgeable. They told me that each of the candidates was given a handbook that outlined all of the rules, but that they pay people to put up their signs, so the people putting them up probably weren't aware of the rules. I said, "Yes, I agree with you, 100 percent! However, I find it disappointing and disrespectful that all of these individuals are seeking election to higher office, and 2 of those individuals have sat on our dais for the last 4 years, but none of them bothered to hold themselves to a higher standard, and follow the laws for our local elections. What statement does that make about how they conduct themselves as a local official?" The city staffers, who had common sense, agreed with me! If you see any signs on utility poles in Escondido, please comment here on the location, the candidate's names, and then report them immediately. You can call code compliance at Escondido City Hall directly, or you can try this number that they gave me: 760-839-4650.
