Which plugin for dynamic updating playlists (to be like channel programming)?

I currently have 5 playlists I use for evening watching. One for each weekday. I manually update them on Sunday. I would like to be able to automate this. I've seen a few people talking about something like this but they don't appear to be in the in-emby add-on/plugins list and the Github pages are light on documentation/capabilities. I'm looking for suggestions for which one(s) might fit my desire the best.

What I want is to be able to give the playlist generator a list of TV Shows and season numbers and have it generate a list of 1 episode from each, in order to play. Then at the end it stops.

What I'm doing now.

I created a "done for the night" video similar to a station sign-off to let me know it's done. I then manually add the episodes from a given season of a given show into the 5 playlists (monday through friday), then I do the same for the next show and manually sort them. Friday is usually a sit-com followed by a movie.

The down side is that each weekend, I have to go in and remove the episodes I've watched from each playlist so that I can just hit "play".

Need help with remote server setup

I keep falling down rabbit holes and hitting dead ends trying to figure this out. I appreciate any input & guidance.

I have years and years of media on an emby server and im trying to setup a safe option to share with friends & family.

Current ISP does not do dynamic ip addr for port forwarding, only static which opens my system up to attack.

Was looking into VPNs but mullvad and a couple other popular ones do not allow port forwarding.

Next option i was told was setting up a cloudflare tunnel. I liked the idea of this only swtting up outbound connection without needing to forward a port. But then i read of their restrictions on media streaming large video files.

Heres my current situation:

-running emby server on windows 10

-dont have option to buy or build machine for dedicated server. Media is connected to my private pc

-i already have user accounts setup w passwords for those i want to allow access

-nearly 10tb of data on server with files ranging in size larger vid files are 20+gb

-only trying to setup the sharing, not using pc to download new media

-i can run on local machines just fine. Specifically having trouble w remote access

-I've paid for Emby Premier account

Can someone please help me setup what im trying to do? I just want to allow my users access at any time they wish while keeping my system/data secure.

feels like im missing some basic important steps to do this quick and easy. 😞

3rd Party App/Add-On Nostalgex now supports Emby: a free retro channel guide for your library on Apple TV

Post image
14 Upvotes

Hey r/emby, first time posting here.

Nostalgex is a free Apple TV app i've built in my spare time. You point it at your Emby server and it sorts your library to a real channel guide.

I originally built it for my kids. They'd scroll forever and then put on the same show again and again. It started on Plex, then a few weeks ago Jellyfin, and now I'm looking for some Emby users to join the testflight and discord to help test.

A few things so you don't need to ask;

- Direct play when the Apple TV can handle the file, transcoding only when it has to. Movies split across two files play through as one.

- It's not a plugin and it doesn't show up in Emby's Live TV section. It's a separate app that reads your library.

- Free, no ads, no account. The code is open source (MIT), so you can check all of this yourself.

Join the test flight

Nostalgex.app

Github: https://github.com/chadMueller/Nostalgex

Join the discord: https://discord.gg/FgnZcr5bDT

I've had far fewer Emby testers than Plex or Jellyfin, so I'd really like to hear from you. Especially if it won't connect or if channels look emptier than your library should allow. Settings shows how many titles the app loaded and the last playback failure, and those two lines help me more than anything.

UPDATED 10/12: TESTFLIGHT 46 is available that should resovle the connection issues for most.

It could be really useful...

If there was a view/page/section for the administrator where it shows "missing episodes" for all shows in your collection. Especially with large collections of tv series this becomes useful.

Just as sort of a ... "Did I miss something or make an error"-notification.

Android TV updates

Has anyone else noticed the velocity of updates on the Android TV client has accelerated? All the recent changes have really put the polish on the client. Not complaining, but I thought this was being pushed aside in favor of a single generic phone Android client. What am I missing?

3rd Party App/Add-On JellyBox v2.9.1 - AndroidAuto support(AAOS too)

Thumbnail gallery
7 Upvotes

Hello. Today I can finally announce that I added android auto support to JellyBox. For those who missed my previous posts - JellyBox is a native crossplatform music client for jellyfin and emby featuring carplay, android auto(finally), spotify-like playlists and many other useful features which I run since 2023(so it's not another vibecoded app).

Android Auto exists for almost a month already, but my app stuck google play review queue for no reason, so I didnt want to announce something that was available only via sideloading.

I also got confirmation that app works on Android Automotive OS(see last screenshot). The app can be sideloaded and works as regular app. Depending on your screen size you will either see a mobile or desktop UI. The screenshot I attached - from Renault car.

Few more other changes since the last my post here(2.6.0):

  • Continuity - you can switch playback between devices just like in spotify. This also allows to remote control active devices(phone from computer, or computer from phone)
  • Transcoding per cellular/wifi connection
  • Instant mix supports on songs, albums, etc. Including audiomuse support.
  • Synced playlist downloads. Now they stay in sync with playlist changes on server.
  • Listenbrainz support
  • Context menus on all entities - right click on desktop, long tap on mobile
  • Various improvements in streaming, caching, etc. Carplay also got a ton of improvements, so it works faster and more efficient.

Links to all platforms can be found on GH here - https://github.com/avdept/JellyBoxPlayer or landing page - https://jellybox.app

Looking for Privacy Focused Emby Setup

I currently run the Emby server on a Synology NAS, with Amazon Firesticks as clients throughout the house.

I am looking to improve privacy and get rid of the Firesticks. What are the best client side devices to stream to, that don't constantly collect data and/or phone home?

Is Emby not even the answer for this? Do I need to go Jellyfin and build small computers for each TV?

Virtual TV - library limit

Does Virtual TV have a library size limit? Recently setting it up and set up a channel for movies. Linked to 1 library of about 350 movies around 500gb. But the channel just loads up blank in the guide. All other channels are fine with fewer items. I don't mind if there is a limit, just nice to know what to aim at when dividing.

Laptop/Desktop options for Media Server

So I’ve been using my MacBook from school for my Emby server and now I’m in a position to get a separate computer for it.

I’ve been waiting for the longest to get a designated computer exclusively for my media server. I was originally going to use it for my dedicated Plex server, but due to recent updates I haven’t really been a big fan of Plex, which led to the switch to Emby.

So my question is should go MacBook or PC. The options I have are HP, Dell, Lenovo, and Apple, as well as choosing either a laptop or a desktop.

I’m Clueless - Help!

My girlfriend and her family have Emby and their own server. We have the app on our smart TV and it has a METRIC TON of movies and shows. Basically anything you can think of. I was under the impression Emby is like a streaming service and that’s why we’re able to watch just about anything. My girlfriend doesn’t know too much about it because her parents were the ones who set it up and everything. I’m trying to help my Mom see if she’s able to get it on her tablet (she doesn’t have a TV or computer) but I know literally nothing about it. I was reading that it’s not a streaming service and you have to use your own files. I’m very lost on how we’re able to have so much. Would someone be able to attempt to explain it to me? Since it’s not like a streaming service, I don’t think my Mom would be able to use it or really benefit from it but I’m not sure. Thanks in advance!

Keeping metadata after setting up a new router?

Hello! I run my server on a terramaster NAS connected to my router with an ethernet cable. I recently changed my ISP and as such have a new router and IP address. Since all my libraries referenced the old address in their folder paths, nothing plays. Adding the new folder path to each library creates a new folder within the library where everything plays but without any of the metadata changes I made. Is there any way at all to transfer all the metadata from my old folder paths?

Playlists

So the folder for my single library at the moment only has media (music) files.. and no playlists... but the enclosing folder where all the media is DOES have playlists files.... I'd like Emby to use found playlists, but only those found in the folders I give emby access to......

Do you set bandwidth limits for each user?

I've been slowly making the transition from Plex over the last year, and I'm at the point where I'm ready to tell my small handful of users to download the Emby app and switch over.

One thing I've noticed in Emby is if a user attempts to play a file which is higher bitrate than their connection allows, the app just kicks them back to the menu without any information about what went wrong. The solution is to adjust the maximum quality setting downward until the bitrate fits within their bandwidth. I ran into this getting my girlfriend's Roku set up on our home network.

Now I'm curious - do you set a maximum streaming quality per user based on what you know about their connection quality? I have a number of high bitrate files I'd like people to be able to watch (either direct stream, or more likely transcoded) but I'm used to Plex handling the streaming quality to match the connection, and Emby doesn't seem to do that.

What i miss on Emby

First of all i'd like to say thank you to the emby devs, really love how good it works on apple tv. i tried plex and jellyfin too.

Plex was very heavy over loaded, always working hard on my cpu didnt know why and ditched it. With Jellyfin i couldnt play movies properly, didnt figure out why and had to ditch it too.

with emby everything works.

But i miss (especially on the Apple tv app) following things

- Playback delay; my soundbar always needs 1-2 seconds until the sound works, it would be nice to have a delay options, so the soundbar have the time to set itself up

- Next episode; when i finish an episode it would be nice that the next one shows up on the home screen, so when i come back i can jump in again, rn it only shows not finished episodes/movies

- give me the feeling its mine; emby is very standardized u can change a logo here and there, but custom themes would be lovely, options to edit how things look and feel, so it feels more like my emby and not like everyone elses emby

- seer integration; it would be nice to have a seer integration, browse movies, series request them directly in the app

- playback information; when u play a movie u see in the left upper corner the age restriction, it would be nice to also see information like direct play, sound format, resolution etc. i know very nerdy

maybe there are plugins for that or hidden settings to do those things. otherwise it would be very nice of the devs to at least look at it :)

btw. i also tried other clients, but i had problems here and there with all of them, the only one really working is the official emby client.

Failed Emby transition

I am a long time Plex Server user, more recently enjoying inFuse on Apple TV 4K.

Recently I thought I’d transition to Emby, mainly because I wanted an inFuse like experience, on Android TV devices (not currently a fan of the bloated Plex player)..

Emby Server is running fine (in a seperate Docker alongside my Plex Server).

But, unfortunately I’m having playback issues with Emby, which each time forces me to go back to inFuse. :-(

Basically, I can be watching something, and it decides to throw me out to the menu.
If I try to resume, it fails to resume at the same timestamp. So, I end up having to go back to inFuse to flawlessly play the title.

What I’m assuming is that the Emby Player is perhaps not as good at handling a stream error?

This has happened several times this week, on different titles, with our normal nightly viewing.
In all cases inFuse + Plex Server works flawlessly.

Before I give-up on Emby completely, I thought I ask here first, if this is normal Emby behaviour, or, perhaps there is a setting I’m missing? 🤔

New to Emby

I normally use Plex. I've been a big fan of Plex for the longest, however with recent changes with the update(no longer hearing theme music when you stream it to T.V. and a few other things).

I decided to test out Emby. So far I'm liking it(I can hear my custom theme music for T.V. and Movies, and a few other things I like so far.

However I am perplexed about two things that I hope has a fix. The first one being is there any type of live TV option, such as the options I have with Plex. The other thing is, how can I share my server with other people the way I can in Plex, if that's a possibility.
