Discussion All Elliott Smith live bootlegs tagged and catalogued!

Thumbnail elliottsmith.bootleg.fm

Hi all, I wanted to be able to search live bootlegs by song or filter by lossless/lossy, so I created a page on Bootleg.fm for Elliott Smith. You can filter live recordings by song, venue, location, or a combination of things. You can sort by oldest, most popular, etc. Soon I will add the functionality that lets users comment on gigs, so hopefully the page will only get better over time.

Huge thanks to elliottsmithdiscography, who used to have a bandcamp page for Elliott's live recordings and helped me a lot while making this page. There's still a few recordings that they've sent me that I haven't yet found the time to upload to Internet Archive, so please lmk if you want to help with those.

I really enjoyed listening to these bootlegs while tagging them, and I'm happy that there's a central place now that has recordings on different platforms (Mega/Youtube/Internet Archive). Hopefully this is useful to some of you.

Edit: glad you guys like it, you can join the discord to learn about platform upgrades: https://discord.gg/3yz4HNteuR

Mod New rules and reorganisation!

Hello fellow Elliott fans!

I have made some new rules for you guys to look - they are fairly self explanatory. I have put a ban on any posts that are either solely shared to cause anger, or are about the death debate.

I have also started the arduous process of reorganising the community. The first stage of this has been introducing post flares so that it is easier to filter out what sort of content you would like to see. This should help to organise the subreddit. Hopefully, people will have good think about what they are posting before they post it.

I am going to reprogram the AutoMod to filter out posts with offensive content to make sure that offensive posts don't get out when I'm not online due to timezone issues. Hopefully this will help! On a more positive note, I will start a song discussion that we have twice a week to talk about individual songs in depth. We will vote for it the day before each discussion in a separate thread and the top comment will win :DD. The sub has been long overdue for a redesign. At some point we will need an art competition to give it a makeover. None of these are one hundred percent concrete promises, but they are something to be excited about for sure.

I hope that this can continue to be a positive place for Elliott Smith fans from all around the world to share in the love of such a wonderful artist. Sorry about the negative vibes recently and the brief blackout (yes, that was a Heatmiser pun) that was necessary while sorting all of this out.

Best wishes and thanks for reading!!

Media Elliott Smith - Can't Make a Sound - 2000 - One of my favorites from Elliott... An amazing progression and arrangement - so incredibly full. You cannot make this one loud enough; especially at the end when the horns join for the close - very satisfying!

Discussion Elliott Smith / Father John Misty

I just got into Father John Misty thanks to a recommended song (Nancy from Now On). I was listening to more stuff today when I heard something straight out of an Elliott Smith song. Either a coincidence or maybe he listens to Elliott?

Obviously the songs are different but the chords and guitar part are almost the same!

News Elliott Smith biographer Jamie Fisher discusses 'Nobody Broke Your Heart'

Hey all, I had a terrific conversation with author Jamie Fisher about her biography of Elliott Smith, and I wanted to share the talk with a gift link. Here, she shared a story that a friend of Elliott's told her.

"...they’d be at a bar and people who were just fans would want to come up to talk to him and people would just want to touch him, like they wanted to feel like he was real. There was something about him that invited closeness and invited care."

Discussion Cure/Kill

well. I am feeling like a bit of a dullard. I've been a fan since I was a teenager (I'm in my early 40s), and for some reason..... I have always wondered why (in the song Angeles)he says the word 'cure' so weird in the line "trailing some new cure".

well it's because he is saying the word "kill". not cure. for whatever reason I have never looked at those lyrics specifically while listening to that song, and my memory retention is crap.

anyway, some levity for today, and now my brain accepts he is not saying cure really weird đŸ€Ł

Appreciation post Isn't it heartwarming how we all really love a random, beautiful bloke and his music this much?

idk, i think, as with a bunch of other fandoms, that there is a certain atmosphere that you cant really explain unless your in it. i like it here, even if it gets sad sometimes. i was on a brake from his music for a while because of some mental issues but now i'm back to just being exited by hearing all these happiness inducing sounds. makes my day. what a guy

side note : learned how to play happiness and roman candle recently, my goal till the end of the year is to learn (or at least start to learn) tomorrow tomorrow. i saw a cover by "Ethans Guitar Lessons And Music" and holy shit are you kidding me? maybe its mind blowing to me coz i'm still somewhat a beginner but damn, i wanna be able to play that song like that lol . anyways, hope you all have a good one. i know a lot of us are struggling and its really hard to find peace and safety in our own minds sometimes, but lets try to make today a good day, you've go it :) love -Rose

Question what is 'Cupid's Trick' about?

i know elliott said he didn't like the lyrics at all and that it was all kinda nonsense, but it seems to have some sort of meaning or story, and i haven't been able to find anything about it. also is it 'sugar lick me up' or 'sugar lip me up'?

Discussion Mr. Goodmorning is...

...Stephen Malkmus??

He talked about Joanna with what seemed like resentment. She had started playing with Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks. "II'll never forget the tone he used when saying 'She gets to see him almost every day,'" Béatrice says. "He was resentful, or at least not happy about something...like she no longer needed him?" (Nobody Broke Your Heart, 366)

It's complicated, the story of Elliott and Joanna on that tour. He seemed to want to be close with her, to stay friends, but he was also unsubtly exercising his resentments. He played "Mr. Goodmorning" every other night while the Minders were with him, a song about his jealousy toward Stephen and his bitterness toward Joanna; an early version takes a jab at Mr. Goodmorning's band. (371)

Does anyone else find this bizarre? What were some other surprising minor revelations you had reading the bio?

Discussion let's debate Elliott Smith's influence on contemporary pop

(I've posted about this before but figured it'd be worth revisiting.)

So, I was thinking about how Phoebe Bridgers is currently doing a huge arena tour, and that got me thinking about one of my pet pop-music theories: I think that Elliott Smith's influence is a foundational element of the contemporary pop landscape. I feel like a lot of contemporary pop music (using the word "pop" broadly - like, stuff that's popular) has a mood of emotional intimacy and even a sort of melancholy that can be traced right back to ES.

Other than Bridgers, some big names that I'm pretty sure have cited him as a major influence: Lana Del Rey, Billie Eilish, Olivia Rodrigo, SZA, Gracie Abrams, beabadoobee, Clairo, Adrianne Lenker, etc. This list is mainly female artists with folk-y leanings because, um, I like that kind of thing, but I know that his influence extends elsewhere (Frank Ocean, for example).

But I'm also not close to being any kind of music expert, and maybe I'm totally wrong. So, what do you think?

(edit: grammar)
