Discussion Equipment Advice

Hey guys!

My director recently approached me about some equipment for next year, and I wanted your advice.

Currently, we use Pearl's CarbonCore FFX drums (currently around six years old, got during Covid). We use Evans hybrid heads with the bottom MX5's. Our tenors use the Evans TCX heads, and basses use Remo PowerMax's (all drums use white heads, besides tenors, which are clear, besides the two spocks).

I'm kind of thinking of recommending the following:

  1. Snares: Remo Black Max and Clear Ambassador and maybe utilizing a sound projector on each drum (scoop)

  2. Tenors: Remo Clear Pinstripes

  3. Basses: Remo ebony PowerMax's 2

Any advice, thoughts, comments? I want our snares to have a higher/wetter snare sound.

One of the bass drummers at the school owns a crap ton of these. Never seen em before, they have plain Vic branding, so that’s all I know.
They’re quite hefty tho and they sound pretty nice without being to chunky in the hand.
They also look fairly new, 0 dents and don’t have much of any darkening on the from use or gripping.

Question Parade soon, must rest!

Hello all, just here to ask if there's any tips about physical health for parades.

I have a parade on Friday, and I march tenors. I am above average strength for people my age, and haven't had problems before, but this last rehearsal, I got a killer knot in my back. What can I do to properly heal and rest for parade day?

Thanks for the read.

Question Should I audition for bass drum in our winter program to hopefully get better at marching in time while playing?

I want to try snare or tenors my junior or senior year for our winter indoor program, and I think the bass drum would be a good starting point. I play marimba for marching band and usually for indoor. Should I audition or nah? I'm in freshman year for context and have been playing marimba/mallet percussion for 2 seasons and 1 indoor now.

Question Do marching snares explode when they get wet????

Dude, I heard a long time ago that marching snares can explode when they get wet. Since then I’ve always believed it because I swore I heard about it online and from some upperclassman when I first joined hs band. I brought it up and my grandpa who’s a musician called me crazy and I was like “no they really do explode” but when I looked it up for proof there’s nothing about them exploding. Was this just some sort of lie all along 😭

Video Looking for advice/comments on my lot tune transcription

I got this idea from a video of rhythm x 2019 playing this lot tune, so I decided to transcribe it and add my own personal effects such as harmonization, xylo part, etc.

I am not a drumset player so any advice in writing drumset parts on musescore in any regards would be really appreciated!

- Xylo part might also be unplayable, I need to check that out…

To be tagged... Hey, so I found my kid some quads. He is in middle school. I found a simple SPLs but they are a surprise. I wanted to know what kind of sticks are specific for that kit. I have never played them. So I have no clue. He has snare, bell, 5A, 7A, but I know he needs millets. What tip am I looking for?

I hope you can see what I’m trying to demonstrate here.

I feel like I’m not holding traditional grip correctly.
I’ve heard that you don’t want to be able to see your palm, but I’m not sure if I’m taking that too literally. When I play the way I’ve been playing, you can clearly see my palm and I struggle with speed and endurance.
When I adjust my hand so I can’t see my palm, I can immediately play faster and with more efficiency, but you can see that other problems pop up.
When I try to hold the stick what I think of as “correctly” but keep my palm flat, I have to hold the stick at a pretty steep angle to keep it flat.
What am I doing wrong here?

Question Should I Still Go To The Memphis Blues Camp?

The Memphis Blues audition camp is coming up, and I want to attend but I'm not confident that I'll get a contract. Would it still be worth it to attend just for critique and the experience? Or should I just keep practicing and go next year? I'd be auditioning for snare.

Question Tenor Drum Tryout Help

Hello, do any tenor drum people have any tips to help me out getting on tenors (I'm in 8th grade and on them currently for junior high stuff, and I'm hoping to get them freshman year, which will be a really hard task because we have a ton of great players with also more experience, so I need GOOD help, and if this helps, my marching endurance is my weakest point, but idk how to improve it) Thanks!

To be tagged... Play way worse by myself on snare

I’d personally consider myself a pretty decent drummer. I have been playing snare at my school for the past 4 years and currently I am the center snare. However I have noticed, whenever I just play by myself on the snare drum, I seemingly always play worse compared to playing on a pad or with someone else. When I’m playing with the rest of the line, I seem to play way better, even though they’re listening to me and I’m still playing the same thing. But if I play it just by myself, it just always sounds worse. Any tips?

To be tagged... Is my wrist break technique ok?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I have been working a lot on my technique and I don’t know if it’s good or not. I am focused on my left hand as I feel like my right hand is pretty good. I feel like the angle from my stick to my wrist is too flat, but I am able to feel my wrist in use when I play like that. Sometimes the left side of my left wrist kind of hurts when I play and I think it’s due to me playing flat like that, but whenever I change the angle I feel like my technique gets a lot worse.

Question Innovative Percussion TS-PRs

Hello. Has anyone recently been dealing with durability issues and quality issues with their tsprs? I find that they break super easily, sometimes within like two weeks, and the last few pairs I've had, which are from multiple suppliers, have felt really light and hollow-feeling. All the members of my quad section seem to have this issue. Anyone else experiencing this?
