Hi all!
We're Embark's science and vet team, and we're here to talk about something we've been working on for a while: our updated Mast Cell Tumor (MCT) risk score.
What's new: Our previous MCT risk assessment could only flag elevated risk, and only for dogs with certain breed backgrounds. Now every dog with a Breed + Health test gets a percentage risk score plus a designation — below-average, average, or elevated. These new results can be found under "Genetic Risk Scores" in your dog's health results.
Why this matters: Mast cell tumors are the most common malignant skin tumor in dogs. The good news? They're also one of the most treatable: more than 80% can be cured with surgery alone when caught early. The hard part has always been knowing which dogs to watch more closely. That's what this score is for.
How it works: Instead of looking at one gene, we built a polygenic risk score that combines signals from hundreds of genetic markers along with breed ancestry and sex to estimate your dog's individual inherited risk. To be clear, the risk score is not a diagnosis: it won't tell you your dog will get an MCT. But it tells you whether your dog's genetics puts them at higher, lower, or average risk compared to dogs generally, and that may change how you and your vet might approach monitoring.
What you can do with it: The single most important step — especially for dogs at elevated risk — is regular body checks. Run your hands over your dog, feel for new lumps, keep tabs on old ones. Your dog will think it's just really good petting. If you spot something new or changing, that's your cue to call the vet.
Here today: (proof)
We'll be live from 12:30–3 PM ET and checking back tomorrow and Wednesday for anything we miss. No question too basic or too technical — ask us anything. We'll sign our answers so you know who's talking.
EDIT: Thanks all for the questions! We're signing off for today but we'll be checking back in over the next day or two -- so feel free to drop a question if you came late.
Update 4/16: Correcting something from earlier — the updated MCT Risk score is available for dogs tested from March 2026 onward, not for all dogs tested since the original May 2023 model launched. Dogs with scores under the original model will still see those results. Sorry for the mix-up, and we've edited the affected responses below.

i fostered this sweet girl after her owners got into a high speed chase from the cops that ended in a collision, killing her sister in the car (note: dog, not human!) she was caked in dirt, had a gnarly ear infection, worms, and alopecia. she’s now a double coated, long haired goober who loves her cat siblings! (trying to convince her human dad we need another foster fail weirdo for her to make friends with hehe) — embark results at the end!!
supermutt results (in order): german shepherd, russell-type terrier, pekingese

Our sweet boy passed last week. He was kind, a bit aloof, but loved to be by his family’s side. The softest ears ever. We weren’t surprised by the pit but were expecting more so lab, hound or catahoula in the mix. Vet said he did have the eyelid entropion that is extremely common in chow breeds.

Her super mutt makeup is Australian cattle dog, papillon, poodle (small), and pitbul
My Dutch 🐊 Maligator 🥰🥰🥰 I just knew she had some Dutchie! Not surprised about the Mal. Chow chow and Great Pyranese is a surprise though!!
Her family tree is very interesting. One parent looks like a long line of Mal x Dutch breeding. Other parent is the chow chow, great pyranese, German shep side.
Let me know if you all would be interested to see the sibling litter mate male or her son from a litter. Male brother’s birthdate was April 6 2022

Hi everyone!
I just got my Embark results back for my beautiful 5-month old female “terrier mix”. She’s 41.6% Australian Cattle Dog 21.9% Chihuahua, 10.9% American Pit Bull Terrier, 10.5% Supermutt, 9.3% German Shepard, and 5.9% Shih Tzu. My whole life, I’ve grown up with Labs and Golden Retrievers, so I want to be sure I’m setting her up for success. Given these results, is there anything I should be doing to meet her breed needs, tips for raising her based on her top two breeds, or any specifics I should know/expect?
I’d love to hear your guys’ thoughts!

Biscuit is a little pupper that was wandering around the hospital parking lot after my night shift. After beating parvovirus, eliminating those pesky intestinal parasites, and racking up thousands in vet fees, we have finally submitted a DNA test. Our vet could only tell us that she was going to be a big dog since her paws and tail are not proportional to her current body size. She will soon surpass my one year old pitt/staffy pupper.
Can't wait to see her results in probably around a week!

This is Vez. He’s my partner’s daughter’s doggo. Got him as a puppy in 2020. Were told at time of adoption he was corgi / rat terrier. He’s such a smart dumb boy. Super friendly and loves to be outside. Will jump all over you and give a Vezzy hug when you first come in the door, but quickly loses interest and would like to be let outside to bark at all the people who shouldn’t be walking in their own yards, or be outside for any reason.
He loves hiking and shares the trails with his heeler brother Ollie.
We are super excited to see what his DNA says. Definitely think Corgi, but I’ve seen a bunch of other dogs on here with a little dwarfism gene that are corgi-like, but 0% corgi. So…..We. Shall. Se.

Our sweet boy had a horrible past. We adopted him almost a year ago. The results said 11, we were thinking he was 7 or 8. Does severe stress impact DNA tests? This is our sweet and perfect boy, mr. mellow we call him.

Every dog is a little weird. Befriending the neighbor’s 12-foot Halloween skeleton. Only pooping on manhole covers (ask us how we know). Whatever your dog’s thing is, we want to hear about it.
Today we kicked off the World’s Weirdest Dog Contest, and the winner ends up on a billboard in Times Square. Yes, really.
Enter here: World’s Weirdest Dog Contest
Full rules are on the entry page. This contest is run by Embark and isn’t affiliated with Reddit.
Not entering? Tell us your dog’s weirdest habit in the comments anyway. We’re reading every one.

Hallo zusammen!

She’s nearly 7 months old, 24 lbs and underweight/urine stained from living in her crate for who knows how long. She has heterochromia and both front and back dew claws.

hi!! I’ve had to quit all my hobbies so I have time to refresh the embark page 20 times a day and see where the status is lol. any guesses in the meantime? I’m thinking chocolate lab and hound. adopted in August at the local animal control and said to be a “chocolate/golden mix” by previous owner at surrender.
current timeline:
9/28 activate test
9/30 headed to the lab
10/6 received at lab, processing
10/7 extracted
10/15 genotyping…leaving me in suspense!

This is Ms. Luna Latte, roughly 32-34lbs, "lab mix" white acts like a lab, Chihuahua and pit all at the same time. What do you guys think she could be? We will be running a DNA test on her soon.

Has anyone in the last few weeks shipped out successfully from Canada? I am having a hard time getting it back out. Canada post has been an absolute nightmare. What shipping company did you use? And did it require extra forms, apps, QR codes? I paid $40 CAD to ship it back and it ended up in MY mailbox two days later.
Thank you!

This is Cooper! He's 14 years old and has always been a mystery dog. I swabbed him with an Embark test tonight to send off in the morning; really hoping I did it right because the stubborn little goober didn't want any part of it lol
We have always thought Chow mix of some sort with his purple-y tongue, the orange color, undercoat/crazy shedding, and he's very independent by nature. I have also considered Shiba Inu as well but I think he's bigger than they typically get (about 55 lbs).
I posted him on another sub before I got my test and got some interesting guesses, so wondering what you all think before the results come back (if I did it right and get any good results at least)

Adopted this rescue three weeks ago and she is a joy. Name: Farrah. Full name: Farrah Fawcett. She is 41lbs and estimated to be around 10 or 11 months old. Her Embark test is on its way to the lab.
She was relinquished by a dog hoarder near the KY / TN border, then transported to the Cincinnati area where a friend of a friend fostered her for a few weeks before I adopted her.
Her looks have me suspecting a certain breed, though I know it’s a bit of a contentious topic over in that breed’s dedicated sub. We’ll see what the DNA says!
She's incredibly sweet and gentle, affectionate without being needy, and utterly devoid of any training, lol. We're working on that! She barely barks unless she's playing and/or wants something, and if she wants something you're not providing she will grab your shoes or the nearest forbidden object or knock something off the table like a scheming cat. I included the photo of her with the TV because she had never seen a TV turned on before and was utterly bewildered. In fact, she had never been inside a house before we adopted her. (She was fostered in a screened-in porch.) Watching her discover the world has been quite something.
Would love to hear your guesses!

I adopted Bailey from the shelter 2 weeks ago at 12 weeks old. She was listed as a pit mix and I think I’m seeing some boxer possibly? I can’t wait for her results! Any guesses?

Was told the dog was a Malinois and this is what came back.
These breeds are all working dog breeds. I was just wondering is this a thing? Would somebody purposely breed the combination?
Or could the company possibly have this wrong somehow? I don’t get it. Only four breeds in the dog and that’s what they are and almost evenly distributed.
