German Civil War Variant Game Sign ups Open!

Post image
8 Upvotes

The setting is 1875. The German Empire has fallen apart, and eight powers fight for control over 117 provinces and 33 supply centres: Preußen, Bavaria, Saxony, Slesia, Westphalia, Sleswig, Baden and Pommern.

What makes it different from classic Diplomacy:

• An economy: supply centres produce Supply Points (SP), which you spend on building and maintaining units, retreats and more.
• Three unit types: armies, artillery that fires two to three provinces away, and pioneers that build barricades, logistics points and new cores.
• Foreign powers: England/Sweden, France, Russia and Austria are not played, but you can invest in them to gain their favour and benefits.

The game starts with an empty map in the winter of 1875, so every power begins with the same opportunity.

See you in Germany!

My long-time game project is finally online

Post image
7 Upvotes

Hi,

For the past while I've been making a game in my spare time, mostly just to play with friends and family. We've had a lot of fun with it, so I thought I'd share it here since it borrows a fair bit from Diplomacy and thought that the folk may appreciate.

Everyone puts down their orders in secret (moving armies, recruiting, building etc.), then everything gets revealed and resolved. You can make alliances, trade, send envoys and declare war on each other. There are also barbarians wandering around and random weather events that can ruin your plans. You can pick from a few different maps too (I am currently creating more).

You can play online with friends, all on the same computer, or alone against AI. The AIs have their own personalities and are getting quite good. Some like building, some like fighting, and one is a bit of a trickster. They make deals and hold grudges, and they'll gang up on you if you get too far ahead.

It runs in the browser, so no install needed: https://harvest-and-war.vercel.app

It's just a hobby project, and I've had a lot of fun. Would be cool to hear what you think!

Best Russian move?

Post image

Fall of 1902 and a (big assumption) that Austria and I (Russia) are allied.

How would you handle the English threat up north? The safest way is obviously to send one unit into Stp and the other into Nwy / Swe.

I am planning on sending Rum into Sev and BLA into Con. Is there anything that I am blatantly missing that is just objectively a better move?

Dividing Turkey in an Austria-Russia alliance

Generally, with Turkey out of the picture, Austria has claim to Serbia and Greece without question. Russia has an initial claim to Rumania but sometimes Austria will get it as part of the agreement. So that's five centers (Rumania, Bulgaria, and the Turkish home centers) of which Russia is entitled to three and Austria is entitled to two. What's your preferred way to make this division?

Diplicity update 11 October

Hi everyone!

Here's what we shipped on www.diplicity.com today:

A new My Games screen. The Staging, Started and Finished tabs have been unified into a single "Current" view which groups your active games into sections. It helps make it clear which games need action. It also makes it easy for us to support future game states like mustering.

Withdraw from a game. If you can't keep playing, you can now withdraw from the Players or Game Info screen. Your seat opens up so someone else can take over.

Clear or cancel orders on the map. You can now clear an order you've already entered. You can also back out of one you're halfway through entering.

Correct player counts. On variants with a neutral nation, like Europe 1939, games showed one more seat than you could actually join. That's fixed.

Faster chat. Chat now loads messages lazily, so channels load faster.

iOS app stability. We've fixed several causes of the blank white screen some iOS players saw after app updates.

Coming soon: Improvements to chat. We're also still working on mustering and AI players.

Thanks!

Atlas Diplomacy now on Android!

Hey all, I'm the developer of Atlas Diplomacy, an online version of the classic strategy board game Diplomacy. It's now available as an Android app on Google Play:

👉 Get Atlas Diplomacy on Google Play

What you get:

  • Ranked matchmaking. Join the queue and it fills all seven seats for you, so you don't need to find a group first. Every game you finish updates your rating.
  • ZERO NMRs: AtlasDip has a zero-tolerance policy for ranked game NMRs. Games with an NMR for go into a grace period, then open to substitutes.
  • Private games with friends. Create a custom game and share the join code.
  • Fast or slow games. Rapid games finish in a session; standard games run over days if you prefer slow, careful negotiation.
  • Several game modes, including Standard and Gunboat (no-press Diplomacy).
  • Built-in chat for private and group negotiation with the other powers.
  • One account on the app and in the browser. Start a game on your phone and continue it at atlasdip.com on your computer.

If you've played Diplomacy on webDiplomacy, Backstabbr or around a table and want a mobile Diplomacy app, I'd love for you to try it. iPhone users: you can play in your browser at atlasdip.com for now, but an iPhone app IS coming!

Feedback is very welcome, especially from veterans: hop into the ranked games, check out the notifications and the mobile UI, test your meddle against the most savvy Diplomats online today. I'll be in the comments. See you on the board. 🗺️

Diplicity issues

Hello folks. I’m having an issue with opening the app. On numerous occasions when opening the app I get black screened. Sometimes opening another app and returning a few minutes later will fix the issue sometimes I have to wait upwards of 45 minutes to an out to open the app. Has anyone else had this problem and does anyone have advice?

Diplicity Update

Hi everyone!

Here's what we have implemented on www.diplicity.com in the last week:

Mute chat channels. Busy channel? You can now mute it, so you stop getting notifications from it without leaving.

Go back in sandbox games. In a sandbox game you can now return to an earlier phase and try something different.

Clearer notifications. We fixed several confusing ones, like deadline warnings showing up at the wrong time, repeated messages about missed-order extensions, and draw proposals that expired without anyone being told.

Short game warning. If a game has phases shorter than 24 hours, you'll now see a warning before you join, so you know what you're signing up for.

Better "Fastest Start" picks. That section now only suggests games with phases of 24 hours or more.

Coming soon: We're laying the groundwork for "mustering", a quick check-in before a game starts so everyone's ready to play. We're also still working on AI players.

Thanks!

Diplomacy Order Sheets

Thumbnail gallery
35 Upvotes

I recently looked up how to make my own notepads and given how easy it is, I then designed a couple of order sheets for Diplomacy. Thought I'd share if anyone else wants them for personal use.

Contains one version for every player, plus a second variant for Austria. Comes in two different sizes, one small one with room for 8 orders (good for the early game) and one with room for up to 17. Dimensions are such that they print at 300 dpi on A4.

diplomacy nordics map

first ever map, rough draft, thoughts?

red = denmark
blue = sweden
yellow = norway
light blue = finland
orange = livonia
purple = poland-lithuania
(star = sc)
(starting fleet or army as a player wishes)
(6 players, but possibly only 5 by removing livonia)

st petersburg, estonia, and germany have 2 coasts, marked with nc, wc and ec, functions as spain or bulgaria in the original game.

sjælland (sj) functions as constantinople in the original game.

any thoughts, or improvements (other than the obvious map quality, which i will update once the draft is completed)

Dawn of the Enlightenment: Variant Game Looking for Players

Post image
11 Upvotes

Hello all. For the next ACD discord game, I plan on running a big brute, *Dawn of the Enlightenment*. For those of you not familiar, this is the very first variant with High Seas provinces. 15 Powers of various sizes (and variable victory criteria to balance it out). Very fluid play on a global scale in 1701, and fairly historically accurate for a Dip variant. You want a globe spanning empire? Its got 'em! A compact regional? Its got those too! Rules and starting positions on the map.

This will be run *with NMRs*, so things will not grind to a halt every time a player goes missing. I am thinking longer deadlines, maybe 5/3/5/3/3. Join the ACD server and PM me if interested. https://discord.gg/X2f4xZ5uH

Does Backstabbr support email messages yet?

Love me some backstabbr, but my work network blocks games. If I could play by email that would be solved. I put in a request a while back but haven't seen any updates yet.

Don't ask me why they don't block reddit here. I'm not trying to stick it to the man, just want to fire off a few emails to Germany is all.

Advice on organising Diplomacy with work colleagues

I work for a small 100%-remote software company (15 employees, 7-person dev team). Our last social gathering was over three years ago. I'm not exactly an extrovert but I do feel like I'd like to arrange 'something' with colleagues that's non-work-related and is fully-remote (we're more scattered around the UK than in the past).

I'm into boardgames and videogames, and I feel that the personality types in our dev team are such that we shy away from pure social gatherings, but games that include social elements might be the 'hook' to get everyone to engage and take part. I've thought about poker, werewolf/mafia, and now Diplomacy.

I've never played Diplomacy before but it looks like it might be a good candidate for what I'm after:

  • Social elements but appeals to people's competitive streak
  • Can be played asynchronously
  • Doesn't require everyone to block out multiple hours for a session
  • Doesn't take a long amount of time to explain rules
  • It appears there are website/app options that handle most of the running

Does this sound like a good idea for what I'm after? Anything I should know going into this? Or if it's not a good fit for what I'm after are there social-gaming alternatives?
