Discussion 💭🗯️ Who are some 2020s celebrities you can’t see making it out of the decade?
Which 2020s celebs do you think won’t be able to find success past the current decade that made them? Or, which current celebs of the decade will simply be looked back on as a product of their time/era? (Not saying Sabrina in particular btw just a famous person).
•
u/sad_historian 5h ago

The vast majority of musicians right now will probably never be as famous as the ones of the past because it’s an oversaturated market made easier by one hit wonders on TikTok instead. I don’t think any musician that achieved mainstream fame in this decade will be as revered as Taylor Swift or Beyonce, Drake, Ariana Grande, Lady Gaga etc.
•
u/mayamaya93 4h ago
Yep, just like none of the people you mentioned are as universal as Michael Jackson or The Beatles, because the market over-saturation has been happening for a long time now. Social media has made it ten times worse, but I know I had a lot more choices in media consumption than my boomer parents did.
Now there's just way too much terrible content to sift through. It's easier to watch and listen to shit I liked ten years ago.
•
u/Informal_Ad4399 2h ago
I wonder if MTV and VH1 had more of an impact.
Before them you got what was on the radio or word of mouth. That limited both the audience and what was heard. Why waste valuable air time or money on a clone or meh bands.
Then MTV and, later, VH1 come along. You can only show the hit stuff for so long before it gets stale for the viewer. Not every song or band has videos either.
So you get this search for anyone, anything that you might think will get eyes in your channel. You start digging in areas not dug into before. Bands that would otherwise fade into obscurity, or even make a following, get air time.
Que social media rise. It sees the same formula that MTV and VH1 had. By this time, both are already in decline on the music front, and have switched to reality TV and other things.
Social media wants users. Bands want seen, but neither MTV, nor VH1 are really doing that anymore. Thus, they all hit social media. To engage and keep users, algorithms start popping anything close to what you've already hit on. The same is done for music apps like Spotify.
We're now in the product of a loop started with Video Killed the Radio Star.

Obviously no one will be as universal as the big names of the past, but there have always been smaller artists that coast alongside bigger ones. Now everyone is competing for charts and their music makes no noise in the general public. I think most people can name a Taylor Swift song or a Beyonce one, and their music is still pretty memorable. I don’t think artists like Olivia Rodrigo or Chappelle Roan have any sense of longevity, regardless of whether one likes their music or not.

As a person who watched Sabrina and Olivia Rodrigo when I was like 5-10 years old it was weird seeing them become hitmakers I always thought that they’d be those two actresses only people my age knew about
•
u/Character_Prior_7760 4h ago
If I knew any child today I'd ask them who's popular on Disney now. The biggest star of the future is probably already sone unknown actress only kids know about

It worked for the earlier generation, who were in the Mickey Mouse Club: Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera and Ryan Gosling. Insane the careers they have had since then.

Unfortunately there aren’t really any Disney stars anymore, Disney has moved away from live action shows because they don’t do well. Even their best performing shows now perform as well as some of their worst performing shoes like 15 years ago. Or maybe not unfortunately, considering how many of them have come out saying that their childhoods were awful

That’s because you never got to watch the video of Olivia Rodrigo at 8 years old (pre-Bizaardvark) singing Barbra Streisand’s “Don’t Rain on My Parade” at a competition. She was the youngest and she absolutely killed the competition. She already had the talent, the pipes, the confidence, and the drive even back then. Google it.

Sydney Sweeney's fanbase seems to be mostly old conservative men, and they're only interested because she's young, blonde, and has big boobs. I'm going to guess they lose interest as soon as she starts to show any signs of age, gets married, or has a baby
•
u/Inevitable_Nail_2215 3h ago
She's this generations Kate Upton (remember her? no?) but with less charm.
Likewise, she'll "step back to focus on her family" and take a hiatus, popping up in small roles here and there.

Yeah, that's the problem with chasing that demographic: it's easy when you're young and hot, but they'll dump you the minute you turn 35. And chasing that demo makes it much harder to pivot to anyone else later on.

Anyone can have talent but she also carries herself well and makes decisions in her career with an eye toward longevity - I have been so impressed by her since Espresso blew up.

She’s also an actress. About to be in what will likely end up being an oscar nominated film. Has said she wants to produce films. She has career longevity built in. Depends on the celeb though.
Celebrities like Beyonce and Taylor Swift have managed to stay relevant for 90% of their career (if not more) because they have cultivated a loyal fanbase first and foremost.
I guess we can also observe that on people like Selena Gomez. Not a great actress who has starred in so many box office/tv hits and not a musician that relevant quite frankly. But the way she has cultivated her fanbase is incredible.

Sabrina Carpenter has already made a move into liked presenter. I know multiple people that added her Christmas special to their yearly rotation. Like when you host SNL is the general consensus is that it was the writing holding you back that usually a good sign. If she just has a study stream of music there's always a market for a host that can do comedy and music. So she's pretty safe to making it out. Same thing goes to Bad Bunny.

I mean, he's insanely ran-through and was only famous for slinging good dick to usually-unstable women way out of his league until he picked up a bad reputation that follows him around like a nasty STD. There's no shortage of older male comedians with daddy issues who want to take him under their bro-wing and bro-fix him, so we'll probably never really be rid of him in film cameos and standup and what not, but his days of fucking his way to the middle are over since his ex accused him of being a deadbeat dad...
•

I follow his ex/baby mama on tiktok. She says Pete has zero interest in them and isn’t even helping financially, she’s having to go back to work early and find a job because he refuses to pay for HIS daughter that they named after HIS father and doesn’t spend time with her ever. Chappell Roan.
Heard her playing in a public space for the first time in 2 years today.
I think her audience was too young and fickle to have anything close to the cultural dominance whenever she finally releases another album. With a 4 year gap minimum between her first album and the next I think she's doomed.
I think she'll be too old for gen alpha and her 2023 fanbase, post millenials and gen z will have moved on. Would genuinely need to pull off a Charlie XCX marketing perfection ("Brat Summer")

Truly, Chappell’s continued relevance is basically up to Chappell at this point. She is a great songwriter and a fun performer but hates being famous and doesn’t want to release another album for a long-ass time. If she goes hermit mode like she seems to want to it’s gonna be real hard to make a full comeback from that. Honestly though, I think she’d be happier being a much smaller artist.

I understand you're not saying Sabrina Carpenter but I think she's someone who we won't be talking about in 4 years.
Mainly because her entire routine is sexual innuendo with no deeper meaning whatsoever. I mean that's fun as entertainment. I just don't see "haha men are stupid and I have sex with them anyway" not being played out for her by then.
•
u/Kawainess33 4h ago
I hope she’s able to pivot as she has made quite good music without sexual innuendos before. And she’s quite a fun performer, so I hope she sticks around for a bit longer.
But I could see her going down the route of others such as Katy Perry and not being able to change the style that made her popular in the first place.

100% Chappell Roan for sure. I haven't heard anything relevant about her since the whole fiasco with the soccer player's kid . And I heard her last album flopped too.
She was great as a "flash in the pan" talent with some catchy club songs, but not substantial enough for long term success.
ETA: Okay, I looked it up. I was thinking of Katy Perry's last album that flopped. But I still stand with my belief about Chappell Roan in general.
•
u/star11308 5h ago
She only has one album though which is the one that did well as a sleeper hit, and her last single debuted at #3 (although it didn’t stay on the charts).
•
u/speakingthekings4 4h ago
Chappell will probably have a lasting career as a more niche artist making highly acclaimed pop music for mainly gay people, aka the same route Carly Rae Jepsen and Robyn have taken. Either that or she will pull a Lauryn Hill and just never release another album and make spotty public appearances.
She has substance, I just don’t think she ever meant to be this famous and as a result does not play by the rules of how she is supposed to act and the industry has been punishing her with a media smear campaign for it. She definitely has what it takes to sustain a following if that’s what she decides to do though.
•
u/veggielover24 4h ago
Yeah I don’t think Chappell has any interest in being a pop diva like Sabrina or Olivia, etc. which is where she was kinda being wedged in. I get the idea she really wants to be more of a Gaga/Doechii true art artist, but less famous. I loved her music and I hope she keeps creating

She only has one album which was nominated for multiple Grammys including album of the year and best pop vocals. It also peaked at # 2 on the US billboard charts, # 1 in itunes and streaming, # 1 in the UK and is multi platinum with over 1 billion streams. She also has a record setting crowd at both gov ball and Lallapalooza and is considered the fastest meteoric rise of a pop start in modern history. No where close to a flop.

Her last album didn't flop, it is literally her only studio album.

You heard her last album flopped? The only one she’s put out that literally catapulted her to success? The question isn’t “what newer celebrity do you know nothing about?”
