Discussion ššÆļø Why did so many media pre-9/11 predict the destruction of the Twin Towers before the attacks happened?
914
u/Rombonius May 22 '26
now do all the movies that have landmarks like the Eiffel Tower and Big Ben destroyed
105
u/RavenBrannigan May 23 '26
Yea and why in movies when aliens come to earth do they always go straight to Washington DC? And why when they attack do they always attack NYC even though itās nowhere near the biggest city in the world.
Itās almost like movies made in the US place themselves as the centre of the movie and use US monuments primarily in their movies.

Plus, they were already attacked in 1993.
And Osama Bin Laden was already a known terrorist before 9/11.
Also, didn't someone fly a plane into the empire State building?
Also, some of those are just "911ā without actually referencing the incident.
43

The second one happened in 1945, a B-25 was lost in fog while trying to land at LaGuardia. Ironically, at one point, the pilot of the B-25 asked how visibility was looking and the control tower said āWe canāt even see the Empire State building from hereā
412
u/Cheeseish May 22 '26
Yup, Al-Queda, like tv show and movie producers, saw the twin towers as a representation of the US and had the same idea.
51
u/royce32 May 23 '26
It was also the perfect target for a terror attack. They hit the first building which I've only seen one recording off that impact. Then 30 min later with the entire world watching live a plane flies into frame and a fireball bursts from the other tower.
51
u/BandicootTreeline May 23 '26
Most surreal thing Iāve ever watched. People forget it was bombed in 93 too.
24
u/rumande May 23 '26
They reference that attack in the Godzilla movie with Matthew Broderick set in New York. Me and my friends watching in the late 2000's as teenagers hadn't heard about that attack before and for a hot minute we thought that the Godzilla movie had predicted 9/11
18
u/akestral May 23 '26
There's a hilarious/tragic line (depending on you sense of humor, I find it hilarious) in the 90s animated Spider-Man show, when Kraven the Hunter is forced to join up with Spider-Man to track down someone(?), and he uses his super-smell to find where the mooks had hidden them. Spider asks how he knew and he said, "Easy, they had to have been in the basement of the World Trade Center, it still reeks of gunpowder from the old bombing years ago!" Even as a kid, I found that writing ludicrous. It seems absolutely insane now.
11
u/bionicjoe May 23 '26
Oddly enough one of the first things I thought of when I saw the first tower collapse was the Spiderman trailer where he catches a helicopter in a web between the towers.
It was such a trivial thing to think of at the time, but I couldn't wrap my head around what I was seeing.

Juicy by Notorious B.I.G. referenced them blowing up in 1994, obviously he's referring to the 1993 attack but it's kinda awkward listening to the song now. That was already in bad taste though. 6 victims were killed during that and he was just comparing becoming famous to the towers blowing up. Apart from that, cool song though.

Plus some of these are tenius at best.
Goofy movie: "911" was a common beeper tag for "urgent", while beepers were gone by then, a lot of the lingo stick around as common text code, since you had to tap the alphabet throw the number pad at that time.
Johnny Bravo: a skyscraper on fire? On a movie poster? Clearly there must be one exactly like it, just put of the shot and how else could a for happen in a building if a plane didn't hit it?
The Simpsons: this one hurts, yes bus tickets used to be that cheap, so a $9 greyound to New York (where the episode takes place) over the skyline of that city checks out.
American dad: a riverboat, on a river, near an iconic location? Illuminati confirmed!
A lot of animations have had a disaster at the Seattle Sky Needle too, am I supposed to be anticipating something?

u/tinxmijann May 23 '26

There was also supposedly a strange idolatry component to it. The chief architect was a Japanese guy who'd fallen in love with elements of Islamic architecture when working on an airport out in Saudi Arabia (ironically in the employ of Osama Bin Laden's father) so he integrated elements of design from Mecca into what is essentially the world's most prominent symbol of capitalism which went down about as well you'd expect in Wahhabist circles.

I have this memory of a made-for-TV movie about the ā93 bombing that came out later in the 90s.

Cause blowing up an iconic landmark is an easy "oh shit!" moment to write. If the Eiffel Tower was blown up, you'd realize how many times people have depicted its destruction in movies and TV shows thoughout the years.
There was a terrorist attack on the World Trade Center that wasn't nearly as successful back in 1993.
Also Osama Bin Laden was already a known terrorist leader wanting to hurt America before 9/11.
Also also, just straight up coincidence. Things that were written innocuously look dark for no other reason than we have the ability to notice patterns where there weren't meant to be any.

It was the primary reason for Rick Rescorla completely revamping emergency preparedness for Morgan Stanleyās employees. Out of 2700 employees in the towers, 2687 made it out alive thanks to him. He literally predicted it would be attacked again, using his veteran experience of two countryās armed forces, and insisted on training employees under his protection in evacuation steps.
Heās the real life equivalent to the typical movie trope where a guy warns big executives about an attack and being brushed off as being crazy. They actually tried to order his company to shelter in place. He said āno, fuck that, we are getting out nowā and had employees follow his evacuation prep plan to a T. They climbed down 60 flights of stairs and he used Army marching cadences to keep them moving.
After he evacuated all his employees he started going back to save employees of other companies. He called his wife and told her his goodbyes when he felt the building was gonna come down.
So yeah, safe to say a lot of people knew it was a big target.

9/11 wasnt even the 1st time it was attacked, just the most destructive.
25
u/eorlingas_riders May 22 '26
God forbid anything ever happens to the Statue of Liberty or Empire State Building⦠Some people gonna think every form of media predicted its destruction.
Famous things are targeted in disaster films/tv shows/other media⦠because they are recognizable and instantly invoke an emotional response and or a sense of familiarity. It is presumed the world trade centers were targeted for the same reason (same as the pentagon).
9/11 is just a random assortment of numbers that people have a deeper subconscious association with because of the historical 911 emergency calling system, any association to it predating the attack is just coincidental or happenstance.
3
u/MattWolf96 May 23 '26
I started noticing 6-7 in some old things (like part of a phone number, in license places, etc) after that meme took off. I'm sure any decently short number combo can as well
6
u/thattogoguy May 22 '26
They never really "predicted" it per se, it was a broad, visible target. Lots of buildings and landmarks are. Imagine if Elizabeth Tower, or the Burj Khalifa, or the Eiffel Tower, or the Sydney Opera House was destroyed. Everyone would say that "So-and-so media" predicted it.

5
5
u/Born-Enthusiasm-6321 May 23 '26
1) most of these are just coincidences or complete stretches. 2) iconic buildings get destroyed in all sorts of media. It's why the white house gets blown up in Independence Day. 3) they were attacked in 1993, so the idea of an attack against the Twin Towers was very conceivable to anyone in the mid to late 90s.
16
u/Major_Shlongage May 22 '26
Because they were a symbol of New York, which is a symbol of the US. Same with the Statue of Liberty, Capitol Building, and White House.
18
u/Ashcrashh May 22 '26 edited May 22 '26
A lot of these are a bit of a reach that are maybe teetering on coincidental, Thereās a lot of other old media that involved other landmarks as well, but when you compile all of the clips that involve the twin towers of course itās going to seem like it is this crazy āpremonitionā when really a lot of these clips are media that has been cherry picked.
Also, the twin towers were insanely recognizable and popular, so of course the times they did appear in pop culture is because they were a symbol of America and NYC as a whole.
Oh, and the family guy clip is because Osama has been threatening to attack the US since the very early 90ās, it was well known he was a terrorist that hated America and American values well before 9/11

u/WorkerPrestigious960 May 23 '26
Lots of these are a stretch, but also there was a terrorist bomb attack on the towers in 1993, so itās not like an event like 9/11 was unpredictable (an attack itself being predictable, not the nature or the method of the attack)
7
3
u/Senior_Summer7893 May 22 '26
Youāre also talking about a culture and world that lived through hundreds of plane hijackings from many groups and never once considered what would happen if they used planes as bombs. Terrorism inhabited a different part of the mind pre 9/11. Everything changed that day is really describing that people had to think the previously unthinkable. Even if it was obvious the whole timeĀ
3
u/Most-Hawk-4175 May 22 '26
National and global landmarks have always been depicted in movies, stories and books as being in some kind of danger or being destroyed since like...the beginning of storytelling. Lol. Not unusual the famous WTC towers were depicted as being destroyed or attacked. The fact that it really happened was coincidence.
3
u/deviantlyliminal May 22 '26
The Towers had been targeted at least individually by terrorists before. Khalid Sheikh Mohammed helped build a bomb triggered by his nephew, intitiated at the 1993 World Trade Center bombing which killed 6 people.
It was intended to down the tower but Khalid Sheikh Mohammed is a poor bomb builder. He had one blow up in his face prior to that. He then was inspired by the idea of crashing planes into buildings and first got the tactic approved by Osama Bin Laden.
In 1995, the Bojinka Plot was uncovered after a fire in a Thailand hotel. The hotel room was full of bomb making equipment. It turns out it was part of a large scale plot to kill the Pope, bomb many planes simultaneously, flying one into the CIA Headquarters, and assassinate Bill Clinton. The US government was made aware. The plot was foiled but it was a kind of pre 9-11 plan which inspired 9-11.
Khalid Sheikh Mohammed is also the same guy that beheaded American journalist Daniel Pearl in 2002. This video was online for alot of us that were youths at that time.
3
u/theglossiernerd May 22 '26
Because terrorists legit tried to take them down in 1993. Google Ramzi Yousef. His uncle, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed (KSM) was the architect of 9/11. After 1993 failed KSM believed that if the towers were attacked by air, theyād collapse.

3
u/Botto_Bobbs May 23 '26
The same reason there's depictions of the destruction of the Golden Gate Bridge, or the White House. It's not prediction, it's taking a well-known landmark that people can recognize and destroying it to evoke a reaction

u/valplixism May 23 '26
Describing half of these as "predictions" is reaching. Some of them are just the numbers 9 or 11, sometimes in relation to the twin towers, sometimes not. Some of them are just destruction of nondescript singular towers. That said, the twin towers were a well known and recognizable landmark, same with the Pentagon. The Pentagon, in particular, seems like a likely target for a fictional villain due to its military significance. Likewise, any fictional villain seeking mass casualties or a demoralizing display might pick the WTC for the same reason as any other monument. The idea of attacks against the twin towers has been around for a long time, and in fact, there was a failed bombing inside one of the towers prior to 2001.
3
u/Bush_Hiders May 23 '26
Do you think al-Qaeda just drew random US locations out of a hat? The twin towers were an iconic and proud monument of America and its culture, specially the capitalistic value that they represented. It didn't exactly take a genius to come to the conclusion that if someone wanted to target a non-military point as an act of violence against the US, they would choose the World Trade Center.

2
u/Piggishcentaur89 May 23 '26
It's a famous monument. So I guess it's a coincidence that it was predicted. Also, in many of these cartoons, the two towers didn't have planes crashing into it, just that the building were destroyed.

u/tinxmijann May 23 '26
I watched one of the case closed detective conan movies recently and it was so eerily similar and it came out like 3 months before 9/11 š then again there had been a bomb attack on the world trade center before so maybe it was inspired by that?Ā
Also anyone wondering if those shows didn't predict it but that they gave the terrorist the idea or just made them aware that it's an important building? Not that it wasn't a convenient target for a plane either way

They were notable buildings and theyād been bombed before. Itās like showing the Empire State Building get attacked or the White House or Statue of Liberty. Iconic structures. The towers just happened to be attacked so it feels maybe a little eerie when itās really not.

The same reason they were targeted for destruction.
They were an iconic building, set in an iconic city, in an iconic county. They represented everything āAmericaā. Money, greed etc etcā¦

There's a reason why Osama targeted them in the first place.

Better question: how is the Golden Gate Bridge still standing? I have seen it get wrecked by every monster, alien, terrorist, and natural disaster - and yet itās still intact!

Youād be saying the same thing about the Eiffel Tower if someone had blown that up.

Because there had been many attempts to attack the World Trade Center, and many active threats. There was a bombing of it that had been thwarted only a few years before.

The Family Guy one is crazy since Seth MacFarlane was supposed to be on one of the flights.

You got this the other way around. The truth is terrorists watch a lot of cartoons due to their undeveloped prefrontal cortex.

Thomas A Anderson aka Neo in the Matrix had his passport expire on September 11 2001. Dont forget that one

Think of all the times that Eiffel Tower has been destroyed. Itās a super famous landmark and none of that seems odd and a disaster themed movie or show.
2
u/Mditty129 May 23 '26
Itās all purely coincidental. Except for the American government that planned it
2
u/disgostin May 23 '26
i did not know that - i guess it is more-so that the terrorists just picked up on that then, though. the fear of terror and the racism were there already, and they went for the towers cause they were a significant symbol at the time

Are you familiar with this new concept all the kids are calling āconfirmation biasā?

u/jakobjaderbo May 23 '26
Interesting enough, the Ghost Busters (1997) collapse was the one that most closely matched reality.

Plenty media always depicted the Golden Gate Bridge being destroyed.
911 being the US emergency number didnāt help either.
2
u/MajinB0ner May 23 '26
Considering the towers were subject to a bomb attack in 1993 and 9/11 is the same as emergency number 911, these aren't really predictions as much as they are jokes on what already happened. Pre 93 stuff about it I guess would be less coincidental, but yeah all of these are in reference to the 93 incident

You've seen nothing unless you've watched the Lone Gunmen, spinoff series of the X-files released mere months ahead of the attack. The whole pilot is about a plan to fly a plane into the towers, complete with government conspiracy and all. It's uncanny.

Because no one would have raised an eyebrow if they hit the Trump Tower.
