Background:
I got into DCSS last month, around 29th Oct I think? I have been playing it basically daily since then and finally got a win today around roughly 50 or so runs later (49th run if i don't include random runs on mobile that i tried for a bit or checking out DCSS on the web). I think I should be around 38 hours in or so in total as well.
I play mostly with ascii graphics on local because I think it looks neat and the web servers are like quite far from me so I haven't played them.
Previous runs:
The best I had gotten previously was a run that had just about cleared Vault 1-4 and Elves with 2 runes from Swa. I hadn't yet learned that vault 5 comes later so I stupidly tried to fight it out and died with my hubris and belief in the power of Ru's apocalypse by stair dancing and spamming them. I died after escaping to V4 far from enemies with a tele scroll, I had run out of curing pots and the poison from a golden dragon lethally poisoned me with around 340k score.
Besides this, the other runs died before I even got a single rune with only 2 runs making it near the S branches with around 109k scores.
This run:
I had picked up Yred for no other reason than that he showed up early and I really do like being accompanied by a hoard of undead.
I had made it to the end of Orcish Mines (where one of my runs 0 rune but further in runs died) quite smoothly before I had decided to get a bunch of help from the #dcss channel in the roguelikes discord in terms of which branch to go to first and gearing and they had continued to help throughout whenever I went to a new area in addition to also witnessing my final Zot:5 fight and orb run.
I had done Spider Nest and Swamp for my first two rune in that order and I'd say they went really well and easy without much danger, the resistances weren't too bad and the undead horde from Yred helped both areas quite massively tbh.
Next up I had decided to deal with Vault: 1-4 first (definitely not going into V:5 this time before preparation) and with some slow play and my horde, it wasn't a big issue at all clearing.
Then I had done entirety of Elves and I had nearly died a few times in Elves:3, having to use tele scrolls, sacrificing unique bound souls etc and being low hp, mostly because of well that instead of luring enemies, I was kinda just mostly fighting face to face this time. It wasn't a complete open brawl but it was pretty messy.
I had then done depths which were quite risky as well with me being close to death a couple times in Depths:4 I think? I had done necropolis before this which had gotten me that neat rF rC ring which was quite crucial because I absolutely lacked those earlier.
Then it was finally time for Vault:5, I had used a shaft and landed in the upper right room of the vault where I had summoned my initial undead and slowly fought my way to the top right which allowed me to gradually clear the room without much issue really and I got my 3rd rune.
I had then finally went down into Zot where my silver javelins and throwing showed its use in facing down some orb of fire in Zot:1, I had then only faced them later in Zot:5. Overall tho, Zot 1-4 weren't too bad.
Zot:5, I had been going through this area really slowly and it was overall going pretty steady with me being able to easily get to a prism and kill it wthout much issue from the right side of the hall of zot.
It had all sort of become a shitshow when I finally picked up the Orb Of Zot tho, I had to use a telescroll, tele-trap to barely escape Zot-5 before then beginning the Orb run.
The orb run was just so clutch like at every moment, I hate torment symbol, that thing caused so many issues for me.
I was facing pandemonium lords at like 50-60 hp a couple of times and only barely escaping with Yred's shackle, tele-scrolls and so on while gradually also using a bunch of my evocable, specifically my wand of warping to gradually make it up.
I was also using potion of ambrosia to heal or invisible whenever a enemy didn't see invisible before gradually making it to D:1 where I had to face Pios Cuq at sub 60 hp I think? It might have been lower alongside a few other enemies.
Since Yred was picked up later, I could still light the torch at this floor and the summons he gave me were enough distraction to sneak over and leave with the orb.
The escape was genuinely like a horror game, I was so scared of these random enemies that kept showing up while I was in red hp and I didn't have any blinking scrolls, healing wound, hast e and other things.
Speaking of drops, I think my armor drops were really bad? I only ever found +0 Plate armor with no branding armor drops. I had 16 mutation potions and 7 or so brand weapon scrolls? I don't really think my equipment was that insane except the shield and ring maybe.
TLDR: Easy until S-Branches, Smooth and Steady until Orb of Zot and a panicked shishow for the orb run escape.
