Between Earth & Sky: the Roleplaying Game

I know there have been what feels like a lot of Cypher fundraisers this year, but as a fan (and frequent backer of Cypher campaigns) I think this one is special.

Headed by a Native designer Kenna Alexander (creator of the Coyote and Crow rpg), based on a Hugo-award winning fantasy series by Rebecca Roanhorse, the setting is inspired by Pre-Columbian American civilizations. Shanna Germain from MCG is also a designer, and she'd got a great track record helping shepherd Old Gods of Appalachia into the Cypher RPG universe, among other favorites of mine.

We have SO MANY fantasy RPGs based in quasi-European traditions, so I think this is going to be and exciting departure for those of us white and other non-indigenous gamers willing to step out of our comfort zones. The system is based in the new Cypher, but there's also going to be an emphasis on "prophecies" that drive the story of games in this setting that I haven't seen done in other MCG games.

I run a Strange game, and plan to make this new setting a recursion, complete with thematic cyphers and powerful NPCs, so while I'm not all-in (I do have a budget to stick to), I am backing at the PDF levels.

I really encourage you to check it out. I think it's going to be really cool.

Oh, one last thing; if you're hesitant to pick up a game where you would be playing someone very much not resembling your own heritage, they're even publishing a booklet on how we can play in settings like this one. We don't get a ton of RPGs written by non-white people, so this one feels especially interesting. I'm excited for it!

No steampunk source book?

Just realized there’s a bunch of genre books from MCG, but there’s no steam punk themed book. I mean, it’s not super necessary, but it kind of surprised me. It’s not even a genre in the second edition. Again, it’s easy enough to make one just by using the fantasy resources, but I’m just surprised it didn’t get its own book or genre.

Question Roll20 Compendium for Cypher 2

Have there been any announcements of a new compendium for Cypher 2 for Roll20 (containing whatever is available in the Primer or an upcoming SRD)?

If not, I would volunteer to help create one, I have worked on official stuff before for both Roll20 and Fantasy Grounds.

I'm considering getting the 2026 GMs Guide, thoughts/opinions?

I wanted to hear people's thoughts on the new GMs Guide. Waiting for the pdf release and wanted to hear how useful the book is if people have early access or a physical copy already.

GM Advice Prewritten, non-fantasy, faction politics-focused one-shot?

So I've been a player for a long time and have struggled to find the right table. Others have told me that my skillset may be more befitting of a GM, but I don't have any experience with it. A GM friend has agreed to help me run a one-shot in a system I'm familiar with, but now I need to find a one-shot to run (I feel like starting from scratch would take too much out of us at this point). As a player, I really like high-roleplay stories that involve solving complex problems with conflicting priorities and limited resources ("how can we best use this piece of land? Should the money fund a school or a hospital?"), as well as bringing together diverse factions together to accomplish results that they couldn’t achieve alone. I also don't really like generic D&D fantasy (though I have been known to enjoy the settings of VtM and Marvel Multiverse). Does cypher have any one-shots that cater to this desire? Let me know in the comments!

Old Books VS Cypher 2

I have a bunch of the books from the not absolutely latest edition. Some of which are like how to make your own setting, like it's only magic or high noon at midnight. And others are complete sort of settings, like gunslinger, nights and the magnus archives.

Do any of those have any relevance anymore? The nonsetting specific books we'd be using an older rule system, new news setting specific books are also using an old system.

Gaia, a Cypher System adventure: what books am I using?

Got confirmation that I can post the stories from my sessions here! This is one of a few context posts. This will contain the books that I’m using since I’m using more than just the base rulebook. I’m using the revised rulebook and, at the moment, don’t have plans to switch over to the new addition coming out. I will also include the reasons why I’m using them.

OFFICIAL MCG BOOKS:
Cypher System book revised: literally provides everything I need to run a game lol

Expanded worlds: provides more foci, descriptors, artifact, cyphers and enemies.

Godforsaken: provide rules for player races, foci and lots of enemies!

We are all mad here: provides really unique, descriptors, foci and more enemies!

The stars are fire: this one is slightly used only for its weapons, but it was future proofing since I run primarily fantasy and sci-fi games. There is a chance that this book could be used a lot more, depending on the actions of my players. I know they’re reading this, I have plans.

Stay alive: gives me access to possession rules, which gave me some wickedly, evil ideas! But it’s primarily used as a way to become a vampire. Again, I have plans.

Creature deck 1&2 + beastie hairy: gives more access to monsters. It’s a good thing to use when I’m lazy and don’t want to think of a custom encounter lol

Subtle and extreme cypher deck: similar reasoning to the last one. Helps me come up with stuff on the fly if I can’t think of anything.

STUFF FROM DRIVE-THROUGH RPG:

Literature and legacy: provide some interesting foci

Antagonist anthology:** ***Provides more* enemies

Cruel stars characters and gear: provides more playable races and sci-fi artifacts

Multiverse madness: provides even more enemies

Multi focus: I have my own system for players to use 2 foci, but I got this because I don’t trust myself lol currently we’re using my system, but this is good to have as a back up

Orien fantasy races:** ***gives more fantasy races*

Character foci seeds: doesn’t add much** ***but I like* the foci it adds.

Unseen paths: that’s so many focuses!

It took me a couple months to get all of these, but I really wanted to have an open campaign and have a lot of future proofing. When I get into TTRPG’s, I want something I could play for years. It is also very important to know that I have a lot of homebrew! Foci, descriptors: abilities, artifacts, creatures and Cyphers! So if you can’t find something I mentioned in any of these books, I most likely made it myself.

Would this be the right place to post my campaign stories?

My party really wants to share their shenanigans. Most of us don’t feel comfortable recording our sessions and posting them on YouTube. Would this be a good place to post them? Before I do any of that I would post the books I’m using and information about the setting.

Gaia, a Cypher System adventure: meet the cast

For the sake of Anonymity, players will only be referred to as their character names.

Me, the GM, I am the host I run the place. Caine that is my name NOT ENTHUSED? JUST FEELING USED? Sorry, force of habit.

Sergeant Wrightwall the younger is a brash catfolk explorer, who descends from mobility and metes out justice. He was the youngest son of a Noble family from Hartwood. An empire on a separate continent, which we might see much much much later, that is covered in large forests. Due to an instant in which he accused one of his fellow nobleman of fornicating with a goat, and leading a siege against an empty windmill and managing to come out with casualties on his side he was shipped off. But due to his noble lineage, he was allowed to start the game with an ancient light weapon. He’s basically just a cat musketeer with an ancient laser rifle.

Leroy is a strong willed, dragonfolk warrior who wheels an enchanted weapon and masters weaponry. He was a former guard of Quinlayn before getting fired FOR CRASHING MOLD ARTILLERY INTO A HOUSE! He has a crappy apartment and is one of the most powerful players in the party lol

Lord Kendrick Kendrickson the (XXXXII) is a hideous roach addict who dances with dark matter and works miracles. His name is not typical of the roach kind, or any species for that matter. His kind live in deep underground caves. His parents gave him a grandiose name, hoping that one day he could become someone important and fight against the prejudice against his people. He was bullied by arachnos as a child (spider people) and due to it has earned a debilitating phobia of spiders. He did not learn magic through the majors guild, but rather through a close friend of his who taught him while he was young.

Cumulo is a risk-taking treefolk warrior who moves like a cat and devours. As he remembers it, his town was attacked and destroyed. He blamed himself and seeks to reclaim his honor in the champions gauntlet. But there is something far darker to him. A seal in his mind. The use of dark forbidden magic to keep some memories locked away. He’s also a cannibal. Lol dude likes to eat literally anything.

Boomie DaShroomie is a lucky shrooms
Born explore who steals divine flame and masters the swarm. She is the bastard child of an adult left to rot on the streets. One day someone found her and took her in, but before they could reveal her lineage to her, they died. They had made arrangements with Maestro to take her in where she cost much mischief. She’s energetic and chaotic, but at least means well.

Edward Belmonte is a bewitched fragmented warrior who casts spelt. He’s a human so he gets two descriptors. He is a wandering mercenary spell sword

Gaia, a Cypher System adventure: setting & lore

I don’t use any premade settings. I prefer to make my own until my own unique stories. Although I probably will steal place names later on lol. Although this mainly only focuses on the starting continent, I’ll post other stuff once it becomes relevant, this has some very good general info for the world itself.

Gaia
Gaia is the world that this campaign will be set inside of. It is an old world with many pre-existing civilizations that came about and fell before the current societies of the age.

Creation
Deep within the center of Gaia is the lifestream. It is the source of all life and magic. A swirling pink maelstrom of life. It is where all life is born from and where all life returns. The world lives through reincarnation. Once you die, you return to the lifestream and your soul is remade into a new vessel. There is a slight moment in time before your soul is changed that allows for things like necromancy. All magic inherently comes from the lifestream. It is the force that created the world, gives it life, keeps it in balance, and heals it. On occasion, large fountains of this life force come to the surface. these take the form of giant trees, typically known as Iifa trees. Around these Iifa trees there is powerful magic in the air and is a place where fairies typically make their home, although they can also be found almost wherever they see fit. Although beautiful, staying close to these trees could lead to mutation as the magic surrounds you. Iifa trees are a direct path into the lifestream. The largest tree is in the direct center of the largest ocean. It is springing up from a massive island. It is believed to be the first ever Iifa tree. There are religions about the lifestream, many of which are peaceful in nature, but few desire violence. The lifestream and trees are not mythos, but commonly known fact, easily observable by anyone. Denying the existence of these things would be the equivalent of believing the Earth is flat.

History
Gaia is full of history much of which has been lost to time. Strange structures dot the landscape. Besides the common stone ruins, there also seem to be underground cities carved into the Earth. Strangely, larger structures exist as well. Built from metal with statues that come to life made of the same metal. Strange artifacts can be found inside these ruins such as weapons of light. Many of these are broken. Regardless, these artifacts are either studied or used by nobility/royalty as investments due to their rarity. Odder still is the fact that gold statues can be found all over the world. The largest amount of them can typically be found in these odd metal ruins, but they have been found in fields, deserts, forests, pretty much everywhere. Some of them even depict these humanoid figures holding these odd ancient artifacts. Their poses and bodies are never the same, but are always weirdly human like if not a little bit taller. They are completely made out of gold and can sell for a lot! In the skies above the night sky shines with thousands of multicolored stars. White, red, blue, green, purple all dot the night. There are also moving stars just as plentiful as their stationary counterparts. They seem to float aimlessly. It is unknown what causes these stars to move or if they even are stars. It is a matter of debate what these moving specs of light high in the sky truly are. These specs don’t differentiate in color, they are all be white. The rarest anomaly of Gaia are the simmering pits. Massive indentations in the ground, in which no life can be sustained. Even the plants wither and die, just being within 1000 miles of it. It poisons any unlucky creatures that steps within its radius. These craters can be thousands of feet wide and hundreds of feet deep.

STARTING CONTINENT
The continent the game will be starting on is known as Iire. Home to the Falorum Empire. The continent is a circular shape with two large triangular protrusions. These extensions of the land are next to each other and are home to two separate empires known as Icabah, and Colgera. Falorum is a mixture of grassy planes, forests, mountains and beautiful shores. Many islands archipelagos lay off the coast of this continent. There are other continents, but these will be developed as they become relevant. Falorum’s relationship with these other two countries is rocky to say the least. There are rumors of potential war, although not substantial enough to affect most people’s lives. The chances are real though. Although not exactly allies themselves, compared to Falorum these two other icy nations wouldn’t stand a chance alone. But together, their fearsome warriors are a real threat. They may be smaller and poorer than Falorum but are mighty when working together.

CITIES

Quinlyn: the starting city of the campaign. It is one of the most affluent upper class cities in the empire rivaled only by the capital. It sits on a mountainous Shoreline and is well known for its beautiful yet utilitarian architecture and large docks. It will be the host of a special event that comes around every five years. The champions gauntlet. People who think themselves strong compete throughout arenas across the empire to become the new champion of the empire. This city is run by the highest ranking, noble Maestro Xaticment! The most wealthy noble in all the empire. He is also known as Maestro the generous. He has a massive palace, made from pure gold and runs a museum dedicated to the gold statues. He also collects some of the ancient artifacts found in these ancient metal ruins. He has the largest collection of golden statues in the empire. All on display in his museum! Gambit: what was once a shed for outlaws to gamble and drink is now the entryway to a huge underground city, full of debauchery, auctions, gambling, and all sorts of sinful things!. It is also home to the thieves guild. Despite its debaucherous nature, it has a large population and is quite wealthy. Be aware though, thievery is common and it’s not a place to retire. Those who live there have powerful protections from powerful organizations.

Coldguard: a former territory of Colgera who joined the Falorum after a border dispute. It is high up in the cold mountains, just on the edge of Falorum’s border. Although willingly a part of the empire, many of the people consider themselves their own unique peoples. Their culture is that of strong warriors with a large focus on alcohol and brute strength. They have a consistent dragon problem…

Beach town: a small village built by veterans on the most beautiful coast of Falorum has blossomed into a giant bustling city! It’s mean attraction is tourism and vacation. Its Clearwaters and brilliant skies make it a perfect place for retired soldiers and adventures. Many islands are visible off edge this majestic coastline although in reality they are miles upon miles away. But you could always pay for a relaxing ferry ride and enjoy what’s on offer!

Capricorn,
Capricorn is he capital of Falorum. It is home to the royal family. It stands in the middle of a crown shaped mountain range with clouds and mist far beneath. It stands a midst one of the tallest peaks. It is giant, elegant, and beautiful. Although the richest city in the empire. The emotional distance between the emperor and his son can be felt all throughout the city.

Many small towns also exist throughout the empire. Notable examples are Birchwood, Singspring and Hackdust. But there are many more.

The spire
In the center of Iire is a tall metal spire going hundreds of feet into the air and thousands of feet below ground. It is home to a massive collection of gold statues and light weapon artifacts. However, living statues and other beasts live within. It has never been fully explored due to its immense size. Its size is comparable to that of hundreds of cities all built together. Its relative closeness to the capital makes it a haven for adventurers and the adventures guild to send exploration groups to investigate the secrets within.

Question about philosophy in Cypher System?

I haven’t played the TTRPG but I am curious about something, some descriptors train a character in philosophy, when would you even roll such a skill? Do I just ask a question about ethics and stuff and get an answer? I don’t understand what a successful roll for that would even be.

Question Is clean the skies worth it?

I don’t really run superhero campaigns, although I am considering, I’m really more interested in potentially using the descriptors/foci for other settings. That being said, I don’t know how overpowered these things can get since I know power shifts come into play. I don’t buy these books for their settings, just character options, enemies, cyphers and artifacts. I can’t find any reviews actually showing off what comes in this book so I don’t know if it’s worth it, especially with the way I want to use it. But my research makes it seem like there’s a lot of new stuff, and from what little I can find out, it sounds like stuff I’d really like! If anyone has it, please enlighten me lol

Question Social capital in a “teen movie” game

I’m working on a Cypher 2.0 one-shot inspired by teen movies of the 1980s, with the characters’ “professions” consisting of genre archetypes (the Jock, the Nerd, the Class Clown, etc.). I’m pondering the idea of some kind of “social capital” mechanic, where characters can gain influence among their NPC peers through successful social interactions (e.g. a good Perform check while telling stories around a campfire, breaking up a fight, telling a well-timed joke, or succeeding in an athletic competition). Characters could also lose capital if something embarrassing happens to them in public, if a damaging secret is exposed, or if they behave badly (as judged by their peers). Social capital could then be spent to give assets on attempts to persuade NPCs to a particular course of action, such as rallying the school against an outside threat.

Has anyone tried anything like this? How did it go? I feel like having a game mechanic to track social standing could help inspire the players to treat these teenage dramas like they matter, because from the characters’ perspective, they would. But I also worry about letting it get too complicated and the accounting distracting from the larger story.

Updated Character Builder Question

Hello There!!!

Was playing around with the new and improved Character Builder on made by Monte Cook Games, though I do have a question,
Is there a way to add Power Shifts from the Supers Genre to other characters?

I was planning a Gods of Fall campaign and was wondering if this could be done…
I wanted to start out the pcs mere mortals and then start gaining divine powers gradually…

Thank you in advance to anyone who might know..

Discussion Resource Points: Thoughts/Experiences with them?

In Cypher 2E I was reading about the Resource Points. I believe it’s a new addition to C2 (or I just never read/used them before).

I had some immediate impressions but was more curious to hear others’ takes on it.

Resource Points (page 314)
“Resource points are a way to accomplish goals you set for yourself. They allow you to choose what you
want to do and then advance toward that goal. Need to know a secret way into the castle? Need to get
the ship’s hyperdrive back online? Need to convince someone to keep an eye on things while you’re
gone? Spend resource points.

Gaining Resource Points
Each time you advance your character (such as by learning a new skill, increasing your Effort score, adding another point to your Edge, and so on), you also gain 1 resource point. Starting at tier 3, you gain 2 resource points (instead of 1) each time you advance. At tier 5, you gain 3 resource points (instead of 2) each time you advance.
The GM may award you additional resource points depending on the situation.”

It then gives an example list of activities and RP costs (ex: Carouse, Rest, Craft Cyphers/Mundane Equipment, Make Contacts/Friends, Invest, Research, etc.)

Question Cypher Shorts Adjustments/Release for 2E?

For anyone that’s either used or is familiar with the “Cypher Shorts” version of the game, was curious if any knew if a re-release of this for 2E was planned. And/or if any modifications came to mind for running it with the new rules.

To me it seems only the Wounds system would really change? But I haven’t run a Shorts game or a 2E one yet.

Sheetwright update: Cypher 2, sharing homebrew, and more tools for your table

Hey everyone!

Another update on [Sheetwright](https://sheetwright.app/), the character builder and campaign app I’ve been working on.

**Sheetwright now supports Cypher 2!** That includes character creation, the type/focus progression choices, wounds, block/dodge, and the corresponding sheet and encounter changes. You can still run classic Cypher campaigns too.

A few other things have landed since my last post:

- **Share your homebrew.** Bundle custom content into collections and share them publicly or through an unlisted link. Other people can import them into their own Workshop, including the abilities and other content they depend on.

- **Rollable tables.** Create your own tables in the Workshop and use them directly in a campaign. Handy for encounters, loot, or whatever strange thing your players decide to investigate.

- **More control over campaign options.** There’s a dedicated settings page for things like power shifts, optional species, community content, and which campaign tools you want to use.

- **Physical dice work too.** You can enter your actual rolls and still keep the results in the campaign log. Artifact depletion rolls are supported as well.

Character creation is still free, and the free tier still includes one campaign with the GM tools.

I’d especially love feedback from anyone trying Cypher 2 or running a homebrew setting. Try building one of your characters and let me know where something feels awkward or an option is missing.

[Give Sheetwright a try](https://sheetwright.app/)
