Rant Feeling Hopeless

• Upvotes

I’m a junior at a decent school not spectacular but T50, and have gotten 0 internships. I’ve been applying since my freshman year to literally every company I see, I’ve tailored my resume I’ve posted it here I’ve asked for advice I’ve gone to career fairs, I’ve built projects, I’ve done research, I’m a US Citizen, I’ve gone to hackathons, I’m a TA and still cannot get ANYTHING. I’ve gotten 2 interviews surprisingly both from big companies one sophomore year and one last month. Since the last rejection I’ve just been feeling hopeless and really don’t know how much more I can do. I’m not receiving any OAs except auto ones, let alone any interviews. I know this is my last chance for any internship unless I want to delay my graduation or go to grad school but I really can’t afford that I’m already working 2 jobs as is. I’ve wanted to do this stuff since I was a kid, I love programming I love problem solving but I don’t know this is genuinely ridiculous. If anyone has any advice please just shout it out.

Career Fairs Are Useless

There are so many people going to the career fair that instead of actually having conversations with recruiters, the most optimal thing you can do is just scan as many QR codes as you can. The recruiters obviously don't take any conversation you have into mind because they probably have 50 of them a day. Thats the reason why they have QR codes in the first place.

I genuinely think that the most optimal thing to do at a career fair is to not talk to any recruiters and scan all the QR codes you find.

Company Question How bad would it be to renege amazon?

Received my return offer letter for Amazon, but I am currently in team matching for Google. Chances are that I will not be matched before my deadline for Amazon, but I would much rather work for Google. They specifies that extensions are only for extenuating circumstances, so do I just sign for Amazon and get blacklisted if I want to renege???

Sometimes I wish I never went to a no name school.

CS student with Trading/Fintech SWE and Cybersecurity internships. I seem to not be getting many leads with my current internship hunt (around 170 applications). I'm targeting some of the bigger name brand companies but no luck with even an OA.

I think partially this is the case that whatever AI model & prompt the recruiters are using to parse through resumes is tagging my resume as "not T20". I've been comparing my resume to some people I know from better universities and we all have identical skills/experience, but they seem to get a lot more warm leads then I do. The imposter syndrome is kicking in real bad... Trying to be proactive and reach out to recruiters but it's been pretty miserable.

Wishing anyone in a similar position the best of luck in this internship hunt.

first time negotiating send help

• Upvotes

just received a return offer from my internship this past summer. absolutely loved it there, and the offer is pretty good, but also want to try negotiating, since i’ve heard a small difference now can compound into bigger differences later on. i am in final rounds for a couple other companies, but the return offer company wants me to get back to them by end of next week, which is pretty tight for my timeline.

my priority here is not to mess up the offer they’ve given me. i don’t think i’ll get rescinded or anything crazy, and have good rapport with my recruiter, which is why i’m considering this in the first place at all.

my question: should i let them know i’m in final rounds for other companies? if i get a competing offer, do i call the recruiter or email? also, if my deadline is end of next week, how early do i have to start negotiating/counter by in order to still follow their timeline? finally, how much of a difference/raise is appropriate to ask for?

thanks everyone, any advice is appreciated since i have literally never done this before and have no idea what i’m doing at all!

Company Question if i get rejected from google swe intern after the interveiws, do my chances of getting the interviews for next cycle go up?

• Upvotes

as the title says, i have my 2 google interviews for the swe intern coming up in about a week. im def underprepped, so i was wondering since i cleared the initial screening and was offered the interviews this cycle, does that increase my chances of getting the interviews for next cycle since im already in the google system as having interviewed?

Now I can see why tech companies like Leetcode interview

• Upvotes

A bit of context: I'm 3rd year PhD in CS. I had a few years training for competitive programming but I never made it. The problems seem to be unintuitive to me and I was never able to solve hard problems in either training period or Leetcode.

Always thought Leetcode is just a way for them to gatekeep a well-paid job.

But now I understand.

My Phd requires me to try to solve problems by synthesizing knowledge from academic papers. And I also had a hard time trying to solve it :) (like solving hard problems in Leetcode).

Recently, I've tried to get back into Leetcode to get internships for PhDs.

And the realization comes to that solving Leetcode problems is a really good proxy to see how a person tries to solve hard problems in life. And the results to come with it requires certain skillsets that can be trained to solve harder problems.

Things I've learned to make progress in Leetcode

  1. Problem solving mindset: Leetcode are just problems. Try to solve it in many ways you can. It doesn't have to be intuitive. If I read something that can be able to solve the problem, then try it!

  2. One problem at a time: Focus on reading solutions and techniques that can help you solve the one I'm doing. If I can't solve it today. I try it again tomorrow. Deep focus on solving one type of problem makes me memorize the pattern and the solution better. Finish what I started is important.

  3. Solve in progression: Each hard problem requires a series of small problems that require thoughts and problem solving tweaks to solve it. Leetcode these days breakdown hard problems into easier ones. For example: This easy one is a good stepping stone to help I know the basis nature of the problem. Then when I solve this one, just one or two more ideas or tweaks to make it work for the Medium level. Slowly my skill can start breaking a hard problem down to easier ones and solve each of them.

Just some of my thoughts on my journey through recruiting hell. It's both suffering and joyful. So I try to make the bright side of it more enjoyable.

Unpaid internships at no-name startups

Are these worth anything? Obviously a resume doesn't show hours worked or pay, but does a genuinely unknown startup offer benefits on a resume? I'm able to take a couple that are 5 hours a week and remote and I just want to know if this will help.

Lesser-Known Unicorn Internship Prestige

Curious about how valuable SWE internships at lesser-known unicorns are in terms of resume value. By unicorn, I mean a startup valued at over $1 billion.

I'm also curious about Aven specifically. Has anyone heard of this company?

Company Question Google NG vs Intern TM

Will Google NG team matching this year be as tough as interns? I know they're passing a bunch of people through to team matching for interns, and I'm wondering if it's the same for new grad.

Company Question Snowflake SWE Intern Interview Experiences

Hi everyone,

I have an upcoming technical interview for the SWE Intern role at Snowflake and would like to hear from anyone who has interviewed recently.

What kind of DSA questions were asked, and how difficult were they?

Any insights into the interview format, preparation tips, or recent experiences would be really helpful.

Thanks!
