I really appreciate you asking this.

Random shorts. There have always been pockets of the US that have a higher population of people like this and where you’re more likely to run into this particular brand of crazy, but IME this sort of thing is blessedly (ha!) rare.

Please don’t believe the stuff you see on social media, which amplifies the message spread by a very vocal minority. There are so many smart, decent people in states, and plenty of us are actively working to rectify the shameful political situation, which we never wanted in the first place.

Thank you. I like that everybody understands that my comment wasn't meant to be trollish or anything. I'm really interested if people like that are a big thing in the states.

I think about an edit to my first comment but don't want to sound weird. I would say that I believe you have a lot of decent people in the US like in Russia, Israel, the whole of Europe,... But there is always other people as well, right? The algorithms are making it worse.

It's worth remembering that the US is huge, with a large and diverse population. You're going to see far more of this coming out of the US compared to most countries due to sheer numbers.

I’ve flown over 500,000 miles in the US on delta alone and have never once experienced anything like this.

Depends on what you mean by “big thing”. It’s not super surprising or unusual to hear someone trying to “spread the gospel” by being an annoying twat, or to see someone holding a “god hates ( slur )” sign on the side of the road. But it’s not a daily occurrence and broadly these folks are seen as nut jobs.

To respond, and add on to what else was said: I had a discussion about politics along this same line. Consider the far left and far right of our parties, the loudest parts of the democrat and republican parties. Those groups may only make up a few percent of the party, but get the most attention, because they are the loudest. Say, 5% of people who identify as democrat/republican each, so 10% of the political spectrum, SCREAMING... The other 90% are just trying to live their lives.

Like you said, the algorithms make it worse, because the most obnoxious, cringe-worthy posts are the ones that draw the most attention, and make us look worse as a whole.
