Note to evangelicals. No, it isn't the message that makes people feel unsafe. It is the unhinged person refusing to shut up and ranting to a captured audience that can't walk away that makes people feel unsafe.
Can you imagine her reaction if she were on a plane and someone started preaching about Mohammed or Satan or Odin and she couldn't leave it get away from it? My guess is she would feel very unsafe.
This is the part they don't get. They want you to be thrilled to accept the love and joy of Jesus into your heart, but don't have the courtesy or RESPECT FOR OTHERS to shut the fuck up when they're told "not interested." They take THAT bit of rejection, usually polite at first, as a challenge because "Satan's got his influence on you an I'm gonna BREAK it!" No, you unevolved protein, I just know my scripture better than you and I don't need you disrupting everyone's life because you have a victim-complex borne of your complete misunderstanding of Christianity.
Ah, that's why that sounded familiar. A coworker was reading that and quoted it to me (though he didn't mention the dolphin was named "Who Gives a Shit"... that is hilarious.)
I'll have to look into that book later. (My coworker did recommend it to me, but I was reading a rather dense series at time and I guess I just forgot about it by the time I finished.)
It's quite good. Though to be honest, I've found just about EVERYTHING by Scalzi to be very entertaining. And the audiobook for Starter Villain is narrated by Wil Wheaton, so that's fun.
Exactly as she explicitly claimed in this video, she created the scenario that confirmed her belief. Similar to the Mormon missionary kids going door to door so they can bond over the unbelievers being mean to them.
Yea it’s the way that everyone is just forced to listen to her that makes this not ok. If it were out in public I’d just walk away and mind my business.
I don't know that I could keep my mouth shut and not get kicked off the plane too. Because people like her irk me something terrible. Jesus would be ashamed.
If you spread the good news in a way that leaves everyone wondering what's so good about it, because they just find it annoying, you're not spreading it at all.
Jesus instructed followers to share the gospel with those lost, searching actively for guidance, asking for the word. He did not say to pin people down & jam the "good word" down their throat like an adult toy, mate.
The New Testament is about offering succor to those seeking it. There is no instance where Christ forces a captive audience to listen to his sermons, instead he would go out to remote & quiet places & let the people come to him to hear his word. If we wanted instruction in your faith, we'd ask for it.
No one one a plane asked to be preached to & Christ would be mortified by her.
Exactly why others find it so off putting. It has nothing with trying to genuinely foster others to develop a love for Christ, it’s all about the Christian’s vanity to flex how much of a superior being they are for believing in the “right” God and to score points. It’s super self serving and narcissistic and actively pushes people away from religion, that’s why people are leaving the church in record numbers.
Her best at what? To look like a entitled schizo karen? The churches are emptying out faster then a dressing room of 13 year old girls when trump walks in is no ones fault but Christians. I mean, Christianity did not spread because they were exceptionally good people or moral, it's because it has been forced/indoctrinated or pushed through genocide on folks. Y'all are just mad no one is putting up with that crap anymore and you all cannot dictate your bullshit on people with a iron fist anymore. Into the trash where it belongs.
Especially when someone starts talking about "the end times" as if it's peoples last moments on earth just when they are sitting on board of an air plane.... yeah yikes.. also for filming crew and people without permission she's just probably given herself a life time ban...
Exactly. My first thought when I heard that was, "Given our current location and the activity we are all about to be engaged in, that sounds like a threat."
Agreed. The exact same thing would happen if you sat down incessantly telling everyone about your favorite recipe for Chicken non stop. It's her, not the religeon.
People forget that the "Evangelical" part of Evangelical Christian means they are called and mandated to evangelize to anyone and everyone they have the chance to. It's baked in and unfortunately her getting kicked off the plane will only strengthen her resolve.
It's the same reason Mormons send 18/19 year old kids with no life experience out on missions. They want them experience the hostility from people who don't want to be preached at so they strengthen their resolve and connection to their community because others "persecute" them for their beliefs. Sure, if they manage to snag a few converts that's great, but it's about making those in the community feel as though the only ones who understand and are good people are those in their same religion so they cling to it. Can't take a 10% tithe from an empty church.
Nobody is “mandated” to listen. A captive audience is having their rights violated and the airline is protecting them. She’s lucky I wasn’t there. I would have used just the right words to make her extremely angry or start crying.
This makes me want to board a plane and yell "Have you all heard the good word about Chicken and Dumplings? Well, your about to, for the next three hours."
I would be annoyed by constant chicken and dumplings talk, but the religious talk would make me feel uncomfortable and when the person is acting totally unhinged like this woman, unsafe. People like this are religious extremists no matter what their faith.
It's also her religion. One of the main pillars of Christianity is "saving" non-believers from eternal damnation by forcing them to accept Jesus Christ as their personal lord and savior.
I never said the majority of Christians behave like her, but she obviously wouldn't be preaching on the plane if the religion she followed didn't compel and command her to.
Not forcing but saving, yes. We legitimately believe are in danger and we're trying to help them. That being said if someone acts like this, nobody is going to listen to them, and it defeats the purpose and makes us all sound like lunatics
Religion is like a penis: it’s fine to have one, and it’s fine to be proud of it! But it’s not ok to whip it out in public or to shove it down unwilling people’s throats.
Or talking about butterflies or economics. It's not a public speech forum. That's the issue. It's transportation. No one wants to hear her talk about anything, whether its babies, racoons or crypto currency.
Why would an all knowing all powerful God have to say that they are the only God and he’s a jealous God. If there wasn’t a God that was even cooler before him. God was scared of what was before him. Pretty Gnostic.
Yeah I would trust my wife. If I didn't trust her why am I married to her? I feel sorry for your life that you're so insecure that you can't even trust the person you chose to spend your life wife
Lol fine. It was a metaphor. And besides you're missing the point. If you didn't trust your wife you would still feel jealous. Because you love her. And you don't want her with anybody else. You can't imagine your life without her. Am I right? That's how God feels about you, my friend
If I couldn't trust my wife I wouldn't be married to her.
Your example if I threaten my wife with setting her on fire if she dares to do anything I don't like. That's not a loving god, that's one that only device is terror. I'll gladly take the flames than worship a weak ass insecure god.
You misunderstand what God was saying. If He demanded worship we wouldn't have a choice. He would take our free will away and make us drones. Yet He doesn't do that. You have the ability to reject Him and talk bad about him on Reddit because He's a good God. If you were having a heart attack and refused medical attention, you have the ability to do that. If God wants to save you from something harmful, begging and pleading with you to take the free gift He gives, and you still refuse to take it, well... you made that choice, not Him.
Somebody breaks the rules and rejects the person they're supposed to admire it doesn't make them the victim. It makes the other person the victim. So in your logic God's the victim not you
exactly - came here to say this. If someone was shouting about Allah, Jehovah, the Flying Spaghetti Monster (Peace be Upon his Noodley Appendages), the tenants of democratic socialism, they'd be kicked off, because SHOCKER! people don't feel safe flying in metal tube while someone shouts about their belief system at them in a confined space.
I’m an atheist, always have been. One night some guy started preaching atheism at me. I pretended to be super Christian because it irritated me so much.
One of these psychos cornered me while I was pumping gas once and I honestly thought he would fucking stab me or something if I didn't go along with his energetic rant about repentence. They really have no idea that they look like lunatics.
When I was about 14, I was in a campground restroom with my 9 year old brothers, and a man asked us if we had accepted Jesus Christ as our personal Lord and Savior. He broke the code of no talking at the urinal, the code of not pushing religion on other people's kids, and the code of not talking to other people's kids when they're alone in a public restroom. It was creepy as hell.
One of my mom's friends once cornered me during a party and talked about God for an hour.
I've known her my whole life(I was 20+ at the time) and never knew she was religious. She was the nicest lady, so I didn't want to cut her off. Just thought maybe she was drunk or something.
Sometimes they're just really weird and suddenly feel like preaching. I asked my mom afterwards and she told me that ya, she's really religious.
I've talked to her many times since and religion has never come up again.
I completely agree. If you're behaving oddly, that immediately makes you a potential threat. And, for you religious fanatics, yes this is considered odd behavior by normal people.
Exactly. Ranting and raving regardless of topic (Jello, favorite musician, why your pet is such a tiny perfect baby) is concerning in the best of times. When you're trapped on a plane though? Fucking yikes.
No fuck that the message makes me feel unsafe. Follow my rules or you wind up in a lake of fire for eternity? Why would that make me feel safe? Why do I want some whack job putting that in my kid's head?
I think it's disingenuous to say it is about feeling "unsafe". I think that word is thrown around too much when people just feel "uncomfortable"
That said, I have no problem with her being kicked off the plane. You're allowed to exercise your first amendment right in public spaces (even to the point of making people uncomfortable), but this isn't a public space. Byeeeeee
"So..." is always followed by the most dog shit statement (IRL and online).
Yes, they launch a logic fallacy, but just call it dog shit.
I love talking about all the gods. The minor ones and the major ones. I also like discussing their power rankings versus each other. Just do not deny the existence of all the gods.
Evangelical Christian here. I totally agree with you. There's a time and a place for this stuff and this ain't it. Free speech or not, she's abusing her right to it
I did a project once called the Human Library where people act as human "books" to talk about a specific life experience or identity (I was a pagan book, while there were others who were formerly incarcerated, or talking about their experience being queer, etc) and I had a few people come up and try to talk about Jesus. It was kind of fun and kind of annoying because I was sitting there like "I don't even disbelieve in your god, I just don't worship him." and THAT seemed to piss them off more than just saying I don't believe in Christ LMAO.
The message actually does make people feel unsafe, and if they do feel unsafe, the person speaking should wonder why that is. Instead, it's everyone else's fault.
If she's just preaching religion, she's not hurting anyone. The safety thing was just a lame excuse since they don't want to admit she's just annoying.
If you want to stick to the safety argument here you have a religious zealot, potentially mentally disturbed person (won't shut up about religion and needs to get in your face about it) which can easily lead to them becoming violent. Not to mention that sooner people will only take so much before returning such behavior and escalating the situation. It is definitely creating an unsafe environment
They already know that. Their intent is to provoke a reaction so they can play the victim and reinforce the persecution complex of other like-minded "christians". They're in a cult and this is how cults keep people from leaving.
That’s a person affected with Russian propaganda. They’re brainwashed into psychosis by making everything yes or no. This causes the useful idiot to have performative meltdowns because they’re afraid of others in their cult.
The Pharisees were an actual Jewish sect, it’s not just synonymous with “heretic” or something. I think it’s unlikely that this lady is especially interested in the preservation of the laws of the Jewish oral tradition . . .
She seemed to have an attitude, I'll give you that. But id like to see the lead up?
I'd be frustrated too if I were made to exit for talking about Jesus. If I have to sit in public and "deal" with f-bombs every 10 seconds, I think its not that different for ya'll to ignore scary preacher man.
You are not welcome to peach to a captive audience in an airplane that can't get away from your rantings. No one, and I mean no one's wants your religion pushed in their face against their will.
It doesn't convert anyone and only pushes people away since no one wants to be associated with assholes that do that.
From a Christian perspective Jesus had a few things to say to people who grandstand in places like this
Are you under the impression someone disrupting a flight by yelling the word "fuck" over and over wouldn't be asked to leave? Because they absolutely would, lol.
A guy behind me by a few rows started shouting a few profanities after we were in the air. I thought there was going to be big trouble about it. Turned out he had spilled a full cup of hot coffee on himself.
You talking about Jesus to me is just as uncomfortable as you talking to me about your vaginal discharge on a plane. I’m not interested in joining your cult. It’s not harmless. You are not entitled to force your words and opinions on anyone on the plane. If you think of your Jesus as being akin to vaginal discharge to many of us, it might help you understand why she was thrown off the plane.
