It’s extremely hard to find accurate statistics for “lower-level” (still deserving of the death penalty imho) sexual crimes in the NYC subway, but that 2024 article points to a rate of 1 in 1 million chance of this kind of encounter. The problem is that report rates for those lower-level sexual crimes is extremely low, the figure of 1-in-1000 advanced by u/Glittering_rainbow is 1000x more the reported rate. Now is that enough to cover the overwhelmingly low number of reports for those lower-level sexual crimes ? I genuinely think so, but you are entitled to think otherwise and I have no scientific basis to say otherwise :)
This applies to practically everything you see online. People think planes are falling out of the sky and that everyone is a psycho nutjob. People are turning themselves into paranoid agoraphobes.

NYC subways are known for creeps because many thousands of trips are taken daily and everyone has a cellphone.
You don't see the 999 trips that go fine but you do see the 1 in 1000 that have an issue.
Same reason if you turn on the news you'll see nothing but bad news, because that's what people stop to watch.
