I remember when the Army sent me to Guatemala. As a part of our in-briefing we were told only Army provided food and beverages were authorized and if we dared eat or drink anything local, we would face disciplinary action.

Yes, because your gut bacteria is aligned with where you live. Of course the government doesn't want its pawns rolling the dice with their health. International athletes, teams in the World Cup specifically, often import their own food for this reason. It's not uncommon or weird.

u/elons-musk-ox 2d ago
You are right. My gut bacteria is not used to having disease-carrying insects pass through.

u/Still-Puma 2d ago
Heard multiple times of athletes getting food poisoning during the games, cuz they decided to try local foods.

Googled out of curiosity and can confirm but no individual names, ie. US rowers and various international competitors at 2016 Rio de Janeiro games

And to think, some people actually believe travelling around these near third world countries and experiencing things like this, make you more open minded and fulfilled in life.
Why anyone would want to go there and try this infected street slop is beyond me.

So I've been to India, and you can get good food at a cheap price, just don't do literal street food. You can find traditional street food dishes in most restaurants too.
3
u/therealmarmo 2d ago
I travelled in India as well and eaten street food without a problem. Just watch how the food is prepared, gloves, sanitary conditions, etc. Obviously, these extreme examples in the video are beyond fail. Completely disgusting.
And BTW, there are parts of India that are completely pristine, with beautiful flowing streams and few people. Amazing beaches too and staying at posh hotels for very cheap.

u/Superseaslug 2d ago
We were in the Chennai area for a wedding and it was wild. Such a contrast from nice city to slums

Sex tourism is very cheap in India. Only reason I would ever go even though I'm broke and don't pay for prostitutes.

its just as cheap in Thailand and Vietnam and you dont have all the problems with being in India

I have spent a lot of time in India helping CBI on terrorism finance investigations. I have gone with many first timers and I tell them donn’t eat street food. They always do and always end up very sick.
People always want to be culturally heroic. 4 days on the toilet knocks that out of them.
14
u/elons-musk-ox 2d ago
No, a ton of street food in India is like this. A friend had to take me to specific places he knew were less likely to get me sick.
6
u/CokeBottleSpeakerPen 2d ago
The fact that even some of it does, or a good bit of it does, is enough to keep me away. It's disgusting and a mirror to the hygiene standards in general.

That's tourist food and mall food in the tourist parts of a tourist city during tourist hours
Chill with your anti-agenda-agenda
The streetfood youtubers, in all their stupidity, go to the real blue collar back streets that are setting up shop at rush-hour, where the real people eat.

But all of us in the western world know that already.
we don’t need to go to a shit hole, when we already know a place is a shit hole.
That doesn’t really open your mind.1
u/StackOverflowEx 2d ago
I travel frequently. Mostly to central Asia. The one thing I learned on how to avoid "traveling sickness" is to just be careful about what you eat. If it can be peeled, cooked, or washed, it's safe. If it's served cold or room temperature, avoid it. If it was prepared by the street don't consume it. Filter any fresh water.

u/duckduckchook 2d ago
Well yes, travelling does open your mind, but a westerner used to clean conditions, would not eat street food like this unless they were suicidal. It would take a life time of stomach conditioning not to die from eating this stuff.

I would not even go there let alone eat that streetfood.
India is like a biological lab where they invent new diarea strains daily.
Iam married to a countryside raised, rice fed, rural trained, native chicken, filipina.
Me and our son learned early in what we sometimes call filipino bootcamp survival edition that if mum says " its still good you can eat that " we cant !!!
You need special genes to survive certain countries.

Here’s the thing: if their customers instantly fall sick, they’d be out of business in a short time. The fact is that the people around them have built up immunity to this.
But, if you’re a tourist, you’d be crazy to try it. Your gut has no resistance to the bacteria they have.

I just don't understand what's happening in these videos.. I'm half convinced they're fake. How can anyone think this is a good way of making food? I've seen plenty of comments from people who say they've seen this kind of stuff or worse. But how? Like how can this be okay and acceptable by the people making the food and also by the people eating this food? Is there no regulation, legal rules they have to follow in regards to food standards, hygiene, clean utensils and cooking surfaces? I've seen better food come out of tent cities, so don't try to tell me it's a "poor people" thing.
1
u/Doctorspiper 2d ago
Ofc it’s fake, it’s just racist rage bait that gets a lot of engagement.

Dont know if those Clips Are real but they Show real India street food market in average towns. I lived their for 6 years and this sums up perfectly how Most people live. Ofc there Are „clean“ Place there but majority is fealthy.
BTW why is the Word ind i a n Blocked to Write in comment in this sub LOL

So where even are the videos coming from? They've been circulating for a long time, since before AI was able to master hands and body proportions.
1
u/elafave77 2d ago
It isn't fake. Peeps work with what they got. People in prison are making burritos over their toilets in the US. How TF you going to have good food practices when you live in abject poverty? It's what it is. Feel bad for them and they're getting by however they can.
1
u/InteractionPretend70 1d ago
lol it isnt fake. also ive seen the origin of the second video and its the cleanest option here.
