I still don’t know how she blew up this big. Her music always sounded very casual and marketable, but not even in a fun party way like say Black Eyed Peas or pop Katy Perry.
But her music isn’t soulful like Lana del Rey either, it’s just very plain. I know she used to make more poppy hits like Shake it Off and Blank Space, but her Eras to now albums are so boring!
You could give me her most expensive tickets and I still think I’d be bored at the concert. Listen if you like this kind of music I don’t want to bring you down, but I just want to understand how she got so big.

u/azazel-13 6h ago
She isn't an artist, she's a product with extremely aggressive marketing.
1
u/GreenieBeeNZ 1h ago
Someone once said she's a capitalist who sells music.
Every story I hear about Taylor Swift proves that statement to be true

u/GuineaKeet 8h ago
Im fascinated with the brand of Taylor Swift. Like how did she become a billionaire with a literal cult following off of these dogshit ass lyrics??? She cant carry a tune or dance, either!!!
59
u/1-800-blowme 8h ago
As an avid hater of her, even I can admit her earlier stuff was alright. Hell, love story is my guilty pleasure song, I’ll blast it in the car if I see nobody within a mile radius to witness me doing so😂
8
u/GuineaKeet 8h ago
Lol I also do like some of her stuff. Its not good music but it is definitely a guilty pleasure. Im also an avid hater and frequenter of the travisandtaylor snark sub 😆

She's a nepo baby, just not as obviously as say, Zoe Kravitz. But she is born from wealth, her father paved her way into the industry with checks, and here we are
Edit - am I jealous? Yeah
I wish my dad had money. I doubt her father truly loves her in any fulfilling way but AT LEAST he had money to jumpstart her career
10
u/The_Raven_Born 5h ago
At least Zoe can act and Sing.
9
u/SL1MECORE 5h ago
That's fair
I just meant moreso, who tf knows the name of Taylor swifts dad?
Meanwhile we all know Lenny's name lol. He had more than just money, he had raw talent
Edit - another nepo baby that I don't mind? Willow Smith. She does her thing with her music and I kinda dig it sometimes. Even when it's not my flavor of music it's hard to deny she's definitely inherited some vocal genius from her parents
1
1
u/PonchoNachoRodriguez 2h ago
Lenny Kravitz didn’t write half of his songs.
Karl Denson was his Sax Player and that dude had writing credits to a decent amount of Lenny’s early stuff. I think Lenny worked with other producers and writers after Karl.
But if you dig Lenny, maybe check out Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe. They’re dope.

u/Mucho-Burrito 5h ago
Nepo babies generally are in the same field as their parents, using an existing name, relationships, and connections to get a foot in the door. Just being wealthy isn’t the same thing as being a nepo baby, her parents were well off and that certainly helped but it’s not like a Miley Cyrus situation.
2
u/X_Circuit_Blossom_X 1h ago
Her dad basically built an entire label around her. That's about as nepo as you can get.
1
u/-hedonium- 37m ago
Although, was ultimately very right that she would blow up and she was extremely committed for a kid at her age. I’m not sure that is nepo baby actually. She’s 1000% privileged, but that’s kind of a different, more societal thing than being a nepo baby.
1
u/USERNAMETAKEN11238 3h ago
The distinction is lost, I think while you are technically correct the meaning is lost.
My personal feelings are that the distinction is dumb. Having fuck you money is nepotism-adjacent. Her rise was not based purely on merit..

u/Paclac 7h ago
Being a nepo baby gets you on stage but it doesn’t keep you on it, I’m not a fan of hers but I have to give her credit for staying relevant when so many pop artists that were big in her country days have been left in the dust.
15
u/azazel-13 6h ago
She not so much relevant as she is inescapable. She isn't respected artistically by her peers, but damn if she doesn't appeal to bland women nearing middle age for some reason.
4
u/The_Raven_Born 5h ago
She's an excellent business woman who had the fortune of being big in an era where many white tweens were there to listen and watch her. She also appeals to loke, 60% of the us which is a huge boost.
If she weren't a moderately attractive, blonde, white woman, I doubt she'd have the success she did.
1
u/X_Circuit_Blossom_X 1h ago
She's be another cafe chick doing some weird bluegrass or some dumb shit since she wouldn't of been able to get past the country shtick.
-3
u/The_Pandalorian 4h ago
Swift isn't a nepo baby, lmao. Y'all just saying shit.
She grew up in a wealthy family. She didn't grow up in music royalty like Miley Cyrus.
34
u/DSN_WBN 4h ago
Because most people are simple, have simple tastes, and love to believe in a skinny, young, bland white girl who they've been told is "genius".
That's the truth no matter how many dullards whine about it.
9
u/GRF999999999 3h ago
This. Popularity is often the worst indication of talent or creativity, go listen to some Ween or The Butthole Surfers if that's what you're looking for.

Her fans have listening parties and sleep with her albums playing all night and all day long so her numbers stay where they are. They treat this shit like a full time job. Psychology books will study these weirdos in the future.
8
u/Dr-McLuvin 8h ago
She can carry a tune but she can’t dance and I agree her lyrics are grade A garbage high school poetry BS. Everyone I know who is a legit Taylor Swift fan is either currently a child or got into her in grade school.

Ever see that compilation of all the times she rhymes Bar with Car? Its hilarious and sad. Its like 10-15 songs iirc.
This one https://www.reddit.com/r/SwiftlyNeutral/comments/1ch2k1f/every_time_taylor_rhymed_car_with_bar/ 15 was a stretch, but its a lot lol.
-1
u/Am1AllowedToCry 2h ago
That was 6. Out of ~250 unique songs (not including rerecordings), that is 2% of songs. I challenge anyone to find an artist who has released 250 songs where you cannot find a pattern between any 6 of them.
ON THAT NOTE, I unironically love Taylor Swift's music, but am here to confirm that YES, the song in this video really is a recently released song of hers, and not some made-up AI shit like you would be totally in the right to assume. (If I hadn't heard of this song and I came across it on Youtube, I would legitimately thing AI wrote and sang it. It fits right in with all the other Taylor Swift AI crap out there.)
5
u/CampAstoria 2h ago
6 songs where the constant theme is 'car and bar'. sure themes and patterns can exist. This is just laziness.

u/JD-boonie 7h ago
She's a song writer and has a mediocre voice. She's popular for a reason. Honestly we need more popular artists writing their own music.
With that said this song is crap

u/musiccman2020 2h ago
Bland people like bland music. Combined with a massive marketing strategie and you get this shit.
3
u/Global_Ant_9380 8h ago
There's is a certain demographic who can really relate to her and her brand. Add some passable pop music and that's really all you need
3
u/lasagnadogwater69 7h ago
She has pretty songs like lover and you belong with me. And her hits like shake it off and never getting back together are fun and unserious pop hits that don't suck to listen to.
Even as an edgy teenager who mostly listened to death metal, Never getting back together would get stuck in my head and I'd belt it out when I was alone...😂
2
u/The_Raven_Born 5h ago
You belong to me is pretty?? Must have different interpretations.
0
u/EternityLeave 4h ago
pretty is a weird way to describe that upbeat pop drivel. I would have gone with insipid.
1
u/lasagnadogwater69 1h ago
Lover is a beautiful song. Up there with please please please by Sabrina Carpenter(as far as recent pop hits go, anyways). Every so often these pop stars make some solid tunes.
1
u/X_Circuit_Blossom_X 1h ago
She has a couple bops. I have tried to get into but it ain't my cup of tea.
I also used to play her usual pop hits during pep band, so the whole shit got tiring real fast having to practice it every day and play it like twice a fucking week.

Years ago, at the 2010 Grammy awards, she did a duet with Stevie Nicks, and she was absolute dog shit.
1
u/-hedonium- 40m ago
She was doing peak pop music, like very dopaminergic and marketed well, in the early 2010s. But this is… tough. I honestly think she needs better feedback or editors or try using AI 😬

u/Stock-Photo-3645 6m ago
It’s because you can find her basic ass clones literally everywhere you go or look

The lyrics make a lot of sense after you date a crazy woman for a couple of years. I still get a little PTSD when I hear 2015 era Taylor swift songs.
-6
u/_Dingus_Khan 8h ago
There’s literally zero evidence she can’t carry a tune. Hate her all you want, she can deliver recordings that don’t sound obviously pitch-corrected. That requires some pitch perception and technical ability from what I’ve gathered from recording vocalists for years.
5
u/GuineaKeet 8h ago
Definitely not "literally zero evidence", youre talking about recordings. Have you ever heard her live or heard her raw vocals? They're not good. And I will keep hating.
-7
u/_Dingus_Khan 8h ago edited 8h ago
Feel free to share a link, I’ve seen two live clips of her and both sounded close enough that I wasn’t bothered. Nobody’s stopping you from hating, but we can be realistic about it.
Whoever downvoted this doesn’t know shit about singing and definitely hopped on the “I hate nickelback” train because it was trendy.
-1
u/TheDeadEndKing 4h ago
As someone who listens to bands like Cattle Decapitation, Exhumed and Impaled, I can state that the woman knows how to write ear worms that just get stuck in your head, even if it is not normally your cup of tea.
And she can dance a hell of a lot better than me!

The way he loves you but also me and that doesn’t really matter because I’m at his moms house and she’s cooking me breakfast and he comes and kisses me but then goes to your moms house and kisses her then says he doesn’t like you anymore because he’s with me and then we get married! Uh huh! Then we break up and then get back together but he slept with you when we broke up and then we got back together so your not with him anymore then we sort our issues and love each other! Uh huh!
You get the point, she’s just stringing shit together for no reason

Yeeeaaaarrrrssss ago, someone once described Bon Jovi's music as "beige" and it resonated SO hard that it's now a default descriptor for the most generic music around.
The chicken is fucking beige.

She doesn't have help to write her lyrics anymore, that's why. Anyone who actually believed she wrote anything on her own is severely misguided.

u/The_Raven_Born 8h ago
I'll never understand how this woman found the fame she did. This has always been her music.
6
u/lasagnadogwater69 8h ago
Uh, no. No it absolutely hasn't. I'm not even a fan.
Blank space, Lover, Never getting back together sounds nothing like this. Those are just regular pop songs.

I'm a Taylor hater too, but she started her career with country music. If you're gonna hate, at least be correct about it

I don’t understand how she’s much different than any successful pop singer. I really just don’t. There’s some other female artists I think are much better but it’s not Taylor swift’s fault that those artists haven’t blown up like she has and if they did blow up to her level of stardom you’d all hate them too.

She seriously still writing just plain narcissistic lyrics about another guy years ago while at this point, possibly engaged? I swear she makes her listeners into just narcissistic, hateful dumbasses.

I dunno, I love Taylor. She’s a great storyteller/poet and a good musician making average to above average music. Her last few albums are meh, she’s kinda phoning it in these days, but she’s already built a great career and I like the stuff that made her good.
4
u/Visual-Purchase5639 8h ago
She's phoning it in?? I feel like she tries SO hard on every album
-4
u/jmarinara 7h ago
Nah, the depth isn’t there for the last few. She started writing to build the image and not so much to make good art. Folklore/Evermore is a great example of making art, telling stories, etc. Can also see that in earlier stuff like All Too Well or Speak Now. But she’s always had this “building a persona” and “leaning into stardom” streak in her like Reputation and Tortured Poets. She kinda gets lost in the “haters” and feuds.
Like in the early days she broke up with a dude in a public messy way and wrote Dear John. It was clever and genuine; relatable. Later she breaks up with a dude and writes “But Daddy I Love Him” which is… not.
Anyway, I feel like she’s sorta like Bowie (not musically, I mean career path). Bowie made amazing music for years and then just became an icon who stopped having to be good. Still made some bangers but his later stuff was meh compared to his early career.

u/Moisture_ 7h ago
I don’t get the Taylor swift hate at all even though I don’t listen to her. What is she doing that people don’t like? Cause it just sounds like regular music to me. It’s not surprising regular people would like regular music about love and shit. I imagine she’s easy to relate to. Even if it’s blanched chicken level bland, I mean… she fills that niche. We already have spicy chicken, blackened chicken, bbq chicken, sweet and sour chicken… you get me? I dunno. You can say it’s bad. I’m just saying the hate towards her seems overblown

I only listen to the most extremely underground and extreme music, like Radiohead and Metalloca. I don't know why I even bothered to namedrop them though, you most likely haven't even heard of them
