12 cooked and three live ones went to a friend who helped us out one time.

Hit our limit of 15 today for the first time! Too bad it's most likely the last time of the year. Thinking of getting a canoe or sit on top kayak to keep crabbing through December while the boat is asleep.

...my wife said one more time. The weather has been mostly decent so here we are again. Oddly, though it was quite sunny at home, the marina and bay were still foggy late in the afternoon.

I live in point pleasant new jersey. One day a decade ago while stoned I vaguely remember going clamming with a few friends and just grabbing them by the rakeful. Somewhere near seaside. Can you still do this? I need a new hobby and foraging for food seems like a good one.

I got these traps at the flea market for an absolute steal. Can anyone offer any advice on how to reattach the door of the minnow trap? I know just zip ties but I was hoping for some creative DIY quick release type ideas. Thanks!

Hey fellow crabbers! I’m almost finished with my surf set up. I ended up with 3. One for general practice and beating up and the other 2 that are nice for my wife and I. Is buying 7 snares over kill?

I’m heading back out for another crabbing run. I’ve been analyzing the tide movement to identify my exact drop window.
Based on the chart, the tidal exchange will only be a 1.6ft differential over about 5 hours. I usually prefer the incoming tide, but plan to drop crab pots around 10:30 AM. I usually do not do more than 4 rounds of pots pulls, so that is a span of about 2-2.5 hrs, so ending about 1:00 PM (or earlier if I get my daily limit).
My logic is that a softer exchange would mean a weaker current to allow more crab to be out and about looking for food. Sound logic? How would you crab this specific tide?

We were some lucky SOB's for the final day of dungeness in area 7. Yesterday was very windy and choppy and my kids hated every minute of it. They were hesitant to go out one more time and the forecast didn't look any better so i was worried.
When we got to the marina, it was super calm and quiet. Besides a boat pulling out, we were the only one launching and the parking lot was empty. Apparently other crabbers don't work day jobs 😂.
Didn't see a single buoy the entire way to our spot and we had the whole bay mostly to ourselves. All four traps were accounted for and we took home 11 angry keepers. Twenty crab for the weekend.
Tomorrow's weather calls for strong wind and a small craft advisory. Not a bad way to end the season.

Dropped off traps yesterday near Chuckanut Bay with nice weather. Today was windy with white caps and chop but had ten keepers. Threw one back for missing a claw, gave 4 to a friend that gave us his old traps and kept 5. Tomorrow, we pull traps for the last time this year.
The pot puller comes in handy and makes it easier on the back.

Hey y'all! Your fellow Italian crabber is back!
Yesterday, my girlfriend and I went crabbing and we caught almost 8 kg (about 17.5 lbs) of blue crabs!
I hope you guys enjoy this little video of our journey!
It's my first video ever, so please excuse the amateur editing and the music choice!
How can I improve the quality of the next videos? Suggestions? Tips? Something that you'd like to see?
I haven't received my package of spices yet, so I simply grilled the crabs after a quick boil. I actually love the clean, simple taste this way!
Who wants to join us for our next crabbing session?
See you very, very soon!

Hubby and I went crabbing last Friday here on the FL Nature Coast. Caught 69 blue crabs!
What a great day! And dinner was delicious. 😋

Found this pot puller on marketplace for $10, plus it came with a seized motor & pulley. Will use it like this until i fix/replace the motor.

My son caught a totally soft, live blue crab about 6 inches across in a harbor along Long Island sound. No shellfish advisories for area. We’ve eaten blue crabs before but never caught a soft shell. It is the consistency of rubber and is walking around. Safe to eat? Plan to pan fry. Caught in a minnow trap.

Got rained out on 9/4 & 9/5 (we really needed that rain tho, so not complaining too much 😆)
Went out 9/18 & 9/19, both days were super overcast and dreary, but it didnt detour me (nor all the salmon fisherfolk). Limits both days while dodging boats!! Heres a couple photos (sorry the first one looks like 💩).
If anyone’s wondering, yea, thats a bottle of hair conditioner…, I use rando containers filled with water to freeze to keep my crab cool for the trip home. Tight lines, crab people!!

I have really enjoyed this subreddit this season. it has a good vibe and going crabbing in Venice is now on my bucket list. I have loved crabmeat and crabbing since I can remember and I love photography. As a kid my Grandparents on the Eastern Shore of Maryland held family crab pickings in the summer some of my fondest memories. I was asked on my previous post if cutting off the legs and back fins allowed easier access to the meat. So I’m posting some pictures of the process my grandmother showed me. Cut the legs and back fins off the body between the body and the knuckles. Give the body a squeeze and that cracks the interior shell at the cavities, then pull the top side off exposing the meat in the cavities. Take a crab picking knife and pop out the lumps, then the back fins, then pick out the special from the top pieces by squeezing the shell and pulling out the meat. I can pick a pound and a half of meat in an hour after the crabs are prepped and I’m slow.
Recently retired and have had plenty of free time. Heading down Florida this winter in the Motorhome to stay at an RV Park on Chokoloskee Island on the Gulf side down way south. this winter and crabbing season is year round. Won’t have a boat of my own down there so Probably be chicken necking till a gator comes along looking for some chicken. Hope to make some fishing buddies that can show me how to fish the area properly. Love the west coast pics alot. Happy crabbing!

So this is the best I can do for Crabzilla measurement. I keep carapaces to use as fertilizer. The top one, after boiling and eating I had to flex a bit to fit into the California 6 1/4” limit. This guy appears to be a little bigger than 8”.
We are gonna need a bigger boat.
