I guess I'll gauge the reaction from the sub to the post first, but yeah. Theres's at least three separate red flags in that "trend"

1.8k

u/Apollo989 7d ago

The first being the name. I'm not a fan of incel terms.

310

u/SnooDonkeys6840 7d ago

Galfoy was right there too

119

u/Wilsonrolandc 7d ago

Or Drako, given that genderbent versions of japanese characters add the syllable -ko to names.

73

u/LoamyLoamisLoamy 7d ago

And it especially fits for Draco because -ko is now considered old fashioned. It started declining in the '80s.

As with many incel terms, if has been bludgeoned to death by non-incels due to the incel definition being insane and the word itself being funny.

It's something to sideeye someone over, because it might be an indicator of an issue, but isn't a definitive indicator.

224

u/Grand_Protector_Dark 7d ago

As with many incel terms, if has been bludgeoned to death by non-incels due to the incel definition being insane and the word itself being funny

The exact same sanding down of an otherwise right wing term already happened recently with "chud". "chad" and "Gigachad" are another example that went through a complete inversion from how incels used it.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised of a good chunk of people repeat that name without thinking about its actual meaning

65

u/The_MadMage_Halaster 7d ago

"Chud" actually originated, weirdly enough, from the 1982 movie C.H.U.D. and means "cannibalistic humanoid underground dwellers." From there it entered slang meaning "gross or unappealing" person, often synonymous with "frat bro" or the Comic Book Guy from the Simpsons. It's kind of funny looking at older media where this crops up, like the old Steve Jackson Games card game Chez Geek that uses this definition in the user manual to describe the players.

I think this is the first time ive seen normies use it completely unaware of its origin, though

Second time. "Based" has similar origins.

14

u/Frixi_Infernal 7d ago

Based is old California slang from the 70s/80s that was popularized by Lil B the Based God in the 2000s. It's not incel slang its slang coopted by incels.

I remember seeing the post that came up with the name , and they seemed well intentioned , but still it's weird

Also a shame most people headcanon her as a cis genderswap and not trans that's a massive missed opportunity

287

u/Electrical_Rabbit_88 7d ago

It's also weird to me that for a gender-swapped character, they change the surname and not the given name.

279

u/the_Real_Romak 7d ago

People rarely if ever call Draco by his given name. Even in universe he's only ever referred to as "Malfoy"

116

u/Drow_Femboy 7d ago

Pretty common IRL for people to only ever go by their last name or a nickname based on their last name. Extraordinarily weird to "genderswap" a character's last name.

Draco calls Harry by his last name, too, and you wouldn't see people genderswapping Harry and naming him Harry Bitcher

21

u/the_Real_Romak 7d ago

that's fair. I found it weird as well initially when I was a child, but I guess it's a British thing to refer to each other by their surnames if you're not bosom buddies. happens a lot in British media I've seen.

24

u/3--20characters 7d ago

It's definitely more of a thing from the past and/or for boarding/private/posh schools, regular public schools just use first names these days

9

u/Moblam 7d ago

It's old, but also Draco refers to Harry often by just "Potter" aswell from what i remember. It fits narratively for him to be refered to like that. Also i think both his parents aren't that important actually overall so there is only one Malfoy really.

Just not an unusually thing. had a number of friends in life whose common name / nickname was their surname or some variation on their surname

Happens most often with people with super common first names like Dan, Jack etc

5

u/CaleanKnight 7d ago

Not just british... it also happens when you have several people with the same name in class, then it was either a Nickname or just the last Name or a variation thereof.

I assume it's for the same reason the Japanese do it, you earn given names by being close. You're your family first, and if you get to know each other well, then you become you yourself, or some such like that.

6

u/the_Real_Romak 7d ago

I can't really say tbh. I think it's a holdover from a time where formality and "being proper" were the norms (remember the books were written during the mid to late 90's ending in the naughties). Like how you would address a stranger as "Mr Surname" or some such.

Second is the large majority of "content" being about how aforementioned nepo baby "gets" and/or "fixes" a titular girl/woman. And then third, yeah, it being named after an incel term.

Same here. I watched the movies as a kid but always felt they were mid. I never understood everyone's obsession over it.

u/GimmeSomeSugar 7d ago

Marketing.

It's sold to us as a feel good story that Joanne lived on social benefits while raising 2 kids to give her time to write. And that a string of publishers passed on her books until one "saw their value".

I think it's more realistic that she prioritised chasing her dreams over being a responsible parent and eventually got lucky with a publisher who thought that they found something to fill a gap in their line-up. And that they could hook fans in early by marketing the shit out of it, and engineer a fanbase that would last for years and keep spending.

28

u/Kyleometers 7d ago

They also got SUPER lucky with the movies. Without the movie deal, I don’t see it ever reaching the level it did.

They aggressively merchandised it as soon as they could, but I’m trying to think of any other book series that don’t have some form of visual adaptation that sells the merch for them.

They could just as easily have gotten Percy Jackson-ed, where the live action version wasn’t as good as people hoped, and wasn’t able to keep it going as long.

I remember the build up for the first movie. They had Coke running cross-promotions to get that shit everywhere.

A lot of people gravitate towards popular media because of the social benefits. If you like something (almost) everyone else likes, it's easier to make friends. That's my idea, anyway.

Edit: and to keep those friends too. Don't know what to get as a gift? Just buy some merchandise!

Same here I just never got into it. My friend who is like, as ally as possible, pro-LGBTQIA, vegan, environmentalist, everything etc. really struggled to grapple with the fact that the author of her favorite books and movies is a rabid transphobe. Even though JK has been out about her hatred for several years my friend still bought that Harry Potter game that came out a few years ago. I think she’s now like the “if it’s JK Rowling IP I’m not buying it” mentality but it took a while to get there.

I get it, it’s hard when something comforts you gets ripped from you.

12

u/JustFuckinTossMe 7d ago

I get your friend, we're similar in lots of ways from what you described. I'm also part of the LGBTQ+ and not just a supporter. I left the books behind easier than I've left the movies behind. The movies aren't all JKR's doing or right to claim. The actors, like the main 3 and beyond, were phenomenal at creating magic on the screen with their own talent and presence. The biggest thing I hold onto though is the music. HP music is genuinely beautifully orchestrated and deserves to stand on its own leg of magical whimsy. I'm pretty sure she had NOTHING to do with its composure, she just approved of things.

So while I can leave the franchise behind, I won't let her take ownership of certain parts of it that she didn't even create. I know many of the cast and crew dislike JKR and several of the actors have come out in disapproval of her openly. That set and those years were like, their entire family and you can feel the love for how they're representing the shitty lines come through in the movies. I would HIGHLY support the actors, sound design, orchestra, makeup/costume, setting and set design teams, etc to come together and make us something new that was magical AND unattached to JKR. Some of the actors have passed, but I could see a future where they kind of take back their efforts and time and memories away from JKR's grubby grasps and let those nostalgic whimsical things exist in an accepting and safe space.

It does suck a lot to have something you felt so formative turn out to be so heinous at the creator's core. I used to watch the movies yearly around the holidays, especially because I hate Christmas and never got to participate. So this was like my ONE little tradition I had up until my mid 20s. I just hate her so much for taking these little pockets of safety and spoiling them for us all.

6

u/Wonderful_Emu_6483 7d ago

I agree, I have nothing against the actors, the film score is pretty good even though I’m not a fan of the movies. If you own the movies, sure keep watching them. But I wouldn’t be streaming them because she’s still going to get residuals from it. But my issue is when a new thing comes out and you’re still running and buying it.

There’s always the “separate the art from the artist” type argument, but for me that’s moot when the artist is still alive and profiting off their art. Lots of artists are regarded for being genius while also being terrible, but they’re dead now. JKR is still alive and well, and using her vast wealth from her IP to lobby against and harm transfolk. Then when something goes in her favor she posts about it on Instagram from a yacht holding a cigar and a cocktail. Like she is truly villain-level evil. She doesn’t deserve a single penny.

They’re ok if you’re like 8 when you read them and you read them spaced apart enough that you don’t notice the massive plot holes between each book, and you’re not aware enough to realise a lot of the messaging is ham fisted at best.

They’re not horrendous. I’ve read a lot worse. But JKR herself is why I don’t want any of my relatives to read them.

I wrote a nice little allegory about this to help my cis friend's understand. Maybe you all will find it useful too 🤍:

Imagine you're in high school and being bullied, in particular by someone named Jo.

Jo gets an absolute thrill out of bullying you, and is smart and wealthy enough to keep their hands clean while doing it. Jo usually limits their direct abuse to insults, while spending a good share of their wealth to spread rumors about you, rally others against you, and fund a club whose whole purpose is getting you shut out of school life.

And it works. Kids who never cared about you before now shove you in the hallway, mock you in class, and petition to keep you out of the locker room and the school dance. Jo never lays a finger on you. Jo doesn't have to.

Jo doesn't just have your classmates against you, they have half the people in the town against you.

As far as anyone can tell, there is no good reason Jo hates you. Jo says you're dangerous, but you've never hurt anyone. Jo says you're lying about who you are, but you've been the same person all along.

So how does Jo have so much money?

Jo's family runs a very popular soda shop that sells all the classics: floats, ice cream, good burgers, salted fries, the works. You've eaten there yourself once, and genuinely, it's good, really good. It blows the competition away. Jo's parents know that their child's popularity brings a lot of traffic to the shop, so they've worked out a deal in which Jo gets a small cut of every purchase made there.

Everyone in town knows this. Jo has never hidden where the money goes. Jo talks about it proudly.

The most frustrating part isn't Jo, though. It's the people you call friends and family. People who say they are on your side.

After school or at dinner time, friends and family often suggest going out to the soda shop. You've sat there and watched your own mother order a float. They know the money will go into hurting you, but when you point this out, you often get responses like: "Well, you need to learn to separate Jo's job from what they do," or "Everyone else is eating there, and they already have lots of money, so it's not like it matters."

Maybe they're right that one float won't make a difference. But it's never just one float. It's every after-school trip, every extra person invited who wouldn't have, every "it's not like it matters." And every time, you're sitting there, watching your mother drink her float.

You're not asking them to confront Jo, or give up burgers, or start a boycott. You're just asking them to eat somewhere else, and it's hard not to hear what they're really responding: that you matter, just not more than a float.

142

u/Bug_exceptIRL 7d ago

It is a perfect allegory thank you. People to whom I talk about this issue are often very disconnected from the reality of where the money comes from, and where it goes. So this may works nicely for them, in a more "Mom and Pop" way. Thanks !

I swear it's an astroterf campaign in some way, I've seen it on so many unrelated subs including but not limited to, animememes, comics, manga_manhua, brandnewsentance. It HAS to be some kind of operation to get the series back into the forefront of pop culture before the "new" (stale) series come out. I said something similar a couple weeks ago to my boyfriend and he was like "eh idk it is a popular series". Then a couple days ago he goes "someone has got to be paying for these posts I saw one on a GoT subtreddit..." It's so fuckin infuriating seeing this bullshit genderswapped bigot, from a series that is full of awful predjudice getting loads of love all because "when a girl is mean it's hot" or "wow she's tsundere". Meanwhile every piece of exposure that is given to this series is another fucking nail in the coffin for trans people (especially in the UK).

152

u/ScrivenerTithes 7d ago

wb has been shoving tons money for months into marketing for hp in general in build up to the new series, whether or not the current trend is directly being paid for by them, or is just a cultural response to the flood of money and size of the campaign, seems incidental in that neither would be happening without the new marketing campaign

and the point of guerilla marketing is to be indistinguishable from "organic" word of mouth/virality, so

14

u/AlwekArc 7d ago

This is exactly what I'm saying! This was not a natural progression for a gooner trend! It's too perfectly placed between everyone complaining about all the HP brand stuff being sold right now and the shows release to be anything other than a psyop

Never attribute to malice what can be explained by horniness. Bowsette was a massive thing for a while as well, shipping Happy with Draco was popular for ages and now this allows for the straight version. And Harry Potter continues to be massively popular as an IP because most people unfortunately don't know or don't care that Rowling is a transphobe who uses Potter money to fund the transphobia.

Also, using horniness on purpose is totally plausible, especially if someone is already aware of internet trends such as the whole Bowsette and similar being a thing. u/XtendedImpact 7d ago

I'm so tired of algorithmically recommended rage bait. Not specifically about the Malfoid trend despite the garbage name, but I keep getting recommended rage bait not only for my fandoms, but also for my politics. Thanks Mr Algorithm but I'm not interested in hating men or women, despite how often you recommend me videos in that direction. I'm not interested in hating anyone except for intolerant morons but I already do that and I don't need to see 46000 clips of various left-ish debate artists making fools of them.

I genuinely believe algorithmic rage bait is one of the worst things to happen to civilization since WW2. Literally nothing positive and its negative consequences are so visible in the steadily rising intolerance world wide.

u/MLCosplay 7d ago

On Reddit it's not even Reddit's algorithm, it's the bot farms/paid trolls. Now that you can hide your post history there's tons of people from low-income countries who are being paid to spam posts about the latest gender war topic of the week. And they choose a new subreddit to take over every month or so.

How is that possible?? They turned the Hitler youth kid into a generic looking blonde girl and had her sneer at Harry! I shot more rope than Spiderman! Seriously though, I don't get it at all.

3

u/Talkatoo42 7d ago

The way I originally saw it was before all this 'malfoid' crap, which was Korean social media were basically saying "Harry Potter would've been 10x better if Malfoy had been a girl" and artists were running with the idea.

Which honestly I think is true. Malfoy is a character who is extremely flat and it would add some interesting wrinkles to the character and her dynamic with Harry. I mean anything is more interesting than Ginny!

Since then people are running with it and the usual crowd has completely sexualized it, of course.

I did not know that the hate on the character was centered around the use of the suffix "oid". I thought the hate was based on the fact that it's Harry Potter and its association with jk rowling.

22

u/StormblessedFool 7d ago

It's both

I think the difference between Malfoid & Petra Parker should be studied:
-both are "gender swap" fan-creation
-malfoid became romance/Porn
-Petra became stories of oppression and the trans experience

I guess that tells a lot about how LGBT people and right wing people see women, and how they each interpret a male character being turned into a female character

57

u/Queen_Gremlin281 7d ago

It's nice to sometimes see people standing up for trans rights in those subs, but the fact that any comments like "i dont care about trans rights over harry potter" even exist and are tolerated, it's the nail in the coffin for me.

If that sort of talk isn't immediately shut down, i dont want to even entertain that sub.

This whole trend is so weird to me.

Like ... there's been fan art and fiction about various girl versions of Malfoy for literally decades. From AUs where Draco (and sometimes others) were always girls, to stories where Draco is turned into a girl with magic, and everything in between. Lots of it is smut, and Draco is a tsundere for Harry (or genderbent Harry) in I think every single one.

The only new thing here is the name "Malfoid" which signals to the worst possible people that this is a trend for them. It leans into Draco's racism and frames it as desirable.

But, like, to anyone else, why not just look at the 20+ years of girl-Draco content that already exists?

You have to love this kind of ally... We asked for one thing, please don't interact with harry potter because it directly funds our oppression, by the author's own admission... Didn't ask them to donate to us instead... Didn't even ask them to go in the streets and protest for our rights, we asked for the bare minimum of not funding our extermination... But this one mediocre-at-best children's book is where they draw the line.

Not even commenting on the whole Harry Potter aspect of it, I fucking detest the normalization of misogynistic incel terminology. Sure, today it's ironic for some, but that how language evolves and it's a really troubling tell about the attitudes towards women growing more and more negative.

I wasted so much time reading those books between the ages of 6 and 9 when I could have been reading through the entire Lord of the Rings series

I’ve since lost the ability to properly enjoy reading fiction :(

7

u/Rosefairytails 7d ago

I was a voracious reader, the only reason I liked hp a lot back then was it was the first time I got to hang with people that liked the same book.
If only I had met another Earthsea, Terry Pratchet, Alexander Dumas or Derkholme fan I wouldn’t have bothered at all with HP.

5

u/DJOMaul 7d ago

Tbh, my title 1 teacher encouraged me to read the books because I love(d) magic. I chewed through those books going from a non-reader in 3rd grade  to a 12th grade reading comprehension by 5th grade. I'll always be thankful those books opened a whole world of reading for me.

I am glad there is much more fantasy now that has various level of entry, so my son can experience something similar. If Brandon Sanderson goes off the deep end I'll be pretty upset though. My kid LOVES The Dog and the Dragon.

The truly infuriating part to me about all of this discourse is the fact that I've seen maybe... 8 different people toss Petra Parker into the mix and putting that trend on the same level. Especially when it's people saying "It's just sexualizing characters again."

7

u/Beanguyinjapan 7d ago

Popping in to remind everyone your experience on the Internet isn't universal. This post so far is my only exposure to this, and I'm assuming it's just gender bent harry potter stuff with incel / gooner / racism thrown in for good measure? Like is this a fan game, or a Netflix show, or a doujinshi or something? I dunno, and don't really need to know. I'm sure it's absolutely dogshit just based on "Malfoid" but it can't have near the cultural relevance it may seem, right?

Because it gives more exposure to Harry Potter, which gives more money to JK Rowling, which goes directly into anti-trans hate groups and government bribes (lobbying) to further progress the genocide

It's not even an interesting take on the character most of the time. The only exceptions to me have been when she is specifically MtF through magic, and/or Harry is too. Otherwise it tends to just comes across purely as a gooner harem fantasy. But even that I should probably not engage with.

37

u/Mastergamer117 7d ago

I enjoy the fact that Rowling would despise her character being genderbent, and it’s not like she makes money from the genderbent fan art

You can support the IP without giving money to Rowling that’s fine, malfoid is a bit of a disgusting term tho, I saw Galfoy once and I much prefer that XD

34

u/crec4et 7d ago

A character that is, consistently, portrayed as a minor villain regularly getting comeuppance? She'll eat it up and ask for more, she already had a book about a crossdressing serial killer.

23

u/AestivalSeason 7d ago edited 7d ago

But she does though, the thing about fandom is it's what keeps the idea alive, by enjoying Harry Potter and spreading that love by any means, word of mouth, drawing, etc is that it can influence Someone, Somewhere, to go " oh yeah I did like that ten years ago. Where's my old mug?" Finds it broken and buys a new one or wants a new shirt or is influenced to try the new show, continuing the cycle. That's the issue with supporting the fandom at all anymore. Some people can enjoy it because they have critical thinking skills and can consume media without influence, but that is not possible for everyone, and any amount of effort put forth by anyone, is an increase in dollars at some point for Rowling to throw at governments to further eradicate trans people. When Jowling Kowling Rowling is finally cooked into the earth can people start to enjoy it, and she caused that.
