That's the fun part,I really never cared about harry potter.

u/watchedngnl Sep 14 '26
I liked it at first but the way they treated the anti-house elf crusade of Hermione really put me off. What do you mean Harry Potter laughing at somone opposing indentured servitude. It was my first hint that Rowling was someone who accepted oppression as long as she wasn't oppressed, and that her power fantasy was being an oppressor.

Its funny to me that I've always asked people what their movie series was going up, were they a star wars kid, a LOTR kid, or a Harry Potter kid.
11/10 the most annoying and rude people I have met were Harry Potter kids.
11
u/Pleasant-Future5818 Sep 14 '26
Harry Potter is much, much younger than the other ones of these. It just means they were more into peer trends than the media that their parents introduced them to - a sign for sure but it's not surprising they were different

u/gamjanamja629 Sep 14 '26
Lmao literally all famous media from different decades, what a stupid statement to make from life-criticism

Mmo players in general have either been super laid back or complete psychos irl in my experience
3
u/zehamberglar Sep 14 '26
Also with wow specifically it really depends on what branch of wow they play and it gets really specific.
WoW Retail: Could go either way, depends if they're chasing parses.
WoW Classic: Chill as hell, go watch Gbay99's videos for proof. He's like a wild animal that is learning to trust humans for the first time.
WotLK Classic: Mess up one raid mechanic and you are a pariah in the entire community forever. You have never played their 20 year old expansion before? How dare you.

I think my experience was becausw of my guild. You see, on the server I played, most guilds had an 18+ rule. Or at least a 16+. Or you had to prove you cut the mustard with some progress related achivements. And this basically resulted in all the sweaty tryhard cringelords amassing there. And my guild was formed apecifically for those who weren't accepted anywhere else. Safe to say we barely killed any bosses, but by god, we were laughing so hard doing so.
There was evem one boss, where we didn't read the tactics on purpose to see if we can figure it out on our on...took like 30 attempts, but we killed it eventually.

I still believe LOTR is the best example of masculinity we have. These amazing manly heroes who aren't afraid to sing, cry, hug and genuinely show compassion, respect and emotion.
My little boy is definitely going to be introduced to LOTR when he is old enough.
15
u/Jayandnightasmr Sep 14 '26
I read the first couple of books, and watched the movie when it came out, but I never understood the hype, just feels like the standard cookie cutter hero story.
12
u/NNKarma Sep 14 '26
It's a fun world to do escapism as a child, but I don't need to pay extra in memorabilia for that.
2
u/shadowscroller Sep 14 '26
I read the entire series and I don't know how anyone ever wanted to be a wizard. Harry potter's magic is boring as fuck, I always wanted to be a demigod because they get some really cool powers.

u/Da_Question Sep 14 '26
Tbf, at the time it was also massively popular, like it got a ton of kids into reading, midnight launches full of people in my small rural town in Michigan. It's like having watching game of thrones when it was airing, or basically any popular show. It's like participating in this big cultural moment. Yeah, the books are mid, but they are also written for children... Obviously, they are forever ruined by JK Rowling being a terrible terrible person. But it wasn't about that as a kid at the time.

u/Elaerona Pronouns: She/Her/The Royal We Sep 14 '26
Honestly I rather enjoyed the movies but the books are just... Not good? I tried reading them a few years back before JK Rowling went mask off. The movie really relies on whimsical world building. Which yeah, she does that and it's cool... For a movie. But the plot in the books is terrible. There is just no tension and way too many characters who just don't matter. Nothing ever happens. Harry Potter is a series where there is no rising action. You just have a blip with conflict, then it dies down and nothing matters. At some point I dropped it halfway through prisoner of Azkaban. I also realized maybe more than liking the movie, I just like Emma Watson. I admit to liking the movies but honestly I've been crushing on that woman since I was 9 or something close to it. She was half the reason at least I liked them. Hermione is the best and so is Emma. Honestly the worst part of coming out is realizing my chances with Emma Watson went from 62% (I'm very confident) to 0% because I think she's straight. Truly a horrible day for me.
9
u/Elaerona Pronouns: She/Her/The Royal We Sep 14 '26
I'm fairly confident the vast majority of Harry Potter fans only saw the movies because if they only read the books they wouldn't be fans. They're really quite bad. I'm concerned about the taste of people if they like these.

u/Lominloce The dragonstorms flew away with the starwinds... Sep 14 '26
I've read the books and watched the movies (from a library/pirated because poor and Eastern Europe).
I already disliked them before JK's bigotry became well known because of their portrayal of dragons

u/azure-heavens Sep 15 '26
I always got so pissed tf off at HP because my abusive mother loved it so much. She felt so bad for Harry and his situation, but again... abusive. Shit made me so mad. Fuck that stupid wizard boy and his stupid magical school he gets to run away to.

Does anyone know a good write-up on all the vile hatred the mold-brained witch said, financed and did?
To us engaging in trans circles, her being the monster she is is common knowledge, but outside I've found many people just not really aware. And educating people properly might be more effective that me just saying "yeah she's a (trans)misogynistic arsehole and really dangerous, google it"
Edit: u/SuicidalFlame suggested this article by Quispe López in Them magazine , and it's very in-depth. Give it a read if you don't hate Rowling enough yet.

There should be a database or something for all the awful things that awful public figures do/say. Maybe there already is.
7
u/gilgames_in_tamarian Steak: 0 (I'm vegetarian) Sep 14 '26
There probably are attempts at such a comprehensive listing, though I'd imagine on an international scale all of these to be vastly incomplete.
I don't really mean that though. I think that especially in Britain, maybe also in the US, JKR is more visible in the public mind, but in my continental European experience I often see people mention Harry Potter genuinely not knowing who Rowling has become. And while consciously supporting HP is indefensible (after all every cent she makes is directly used to pursue trans people's extermination), I'm willing to forgive people for genuine ignorance. I am however not sure that I myself am good at educating people.

u/Smufin_Awesome Sep 14 '26
For me, I completely missed the part about her actively donating to Anti-trans operations. I'd heard it once but because it was from someone in the circle who is only a few steps short on the Dale Gribble ladder, I didn't think much about it. It came up again and so I started looking into it more and god...
I've mostly been on the weird island of "Fuck her and her hatred, but she's already so rich we could actively take money from her and she'd still die rich, so why not indulge? The people who make the movies and games need to get paid, and I don't hate Trans people." But after reading it in more detail I'm just kinda Hollow now.

People act like there aren't other magic related franchises that are super cool and way more LGBTQ friendly, like final fantasy, fire emblem, Dungeons and Dragons, etc.
5
u/runnerofshadows Sep 14 '26
Unrelated but for a special school setting I've always liked X-Men. Wish they'd do more stories about the students, teachers, and day to day slice of life non superhero stuff though.

Game of Thrones isn't bad (books) though it is pretty low magic. But brienne being very masculine, and renly and Loras being da gae twinks is pretty cool :>

A book series I just started and am liking a good amount that has HP-esque vibes is Septemus Heap. Very fun and the magic isn’t world breaking if you stop and think about it. Def a kids series but still fun.
Loads of other good books too. Also loving Terry Pratchett’s stuff, Brandon Sanderson’s stuff, and can’t forget my GOATS Brandon Mull and Rick Riordan (though imo Rick’s newer stuff isn’t as good)

u/elebrin Sep 14 '26
Harry Potter wasn't even all that great of fantasy for kids.
If you want a good fantasy series for kids, look up Diane Duane's "So You Want To Be A Wizard" series. The language doesn't treat the reader like an idiot, and they don't outstay their welcome. Duane does a better job, too, of incorporating the magic world with the mundane world in ways that don't feel so forced.

Every day I enter this subreddit, there's another post related to Harry Potter. I feel like it's too much, and it's just preaching to the choir.
On the other hand, it's just a drop in the ocean in comparison to Rowling's funding of trans genocide, so maybe my minor annoyance at this doesn't matter.
6
u/andrest93 Sep 14 '26
As a someone who grew up with the books and movies and after some time I realized I am trans, fuck JK Rowling and if you must get HP stuff, piracy and unofficial merch all the way don't give the bitch money

u/DuncneyForever Sep 14 '26
Speaking of Harry Potter, could you help me?
I have 2 books collecting dust on my shelf (The Philosopher's Stone and The Chamber Of Secrets). I didn't buy either: one was a birthday gift and one was a Christmas gift from my relatives (got both in 2023) and I didn't exactly wish for either. Any ideas on what I should do with them? Burn them? Throw them in a lake? Drop them in some hole?
25
u/Fancy_Chips Sep 14 '26
At this point nothings gonna destroy her legacy. Most bookstores and libraries already have them. You could try selling them or donating them to a used bookstore so that anyone who wants them for any reason won't finance the bigot. Or keep em. Books are books no matter how vile the author was.
2
u/Economy-Payment-1757 Sep 14 '26
Precisely! Just read and enjoy and ignore that the author is an asshole to trans-people!
16
u/Realclearpolitics007 Sep 14 '26
Write it full of little pro gey lovely messages, and maybe a few trans links to resources and help, then donate it to a library or school so another person doesn't buy them and gets some gay agenda

My household has the entire set purchased over a decade ago before JK said anything about transgender people online. We're most likely going to read them to our kids.

Harry Potter isn’t even in the top 50 of best fantasy and I don’t get why so many people like it
2
u/Syphist Sep 14 '26
I bought a wand at my local pride that was distinctly not Harry Potter just because it supported a queer person and encouraged looking at alternatives. It's got an orange "gem" on it and feels much more traditional high fantasy. I personally like the vibe it's going for better. I'm just sad nothing will fill the void of a "Wizarding School" series as unfortunately Chucklefish is corrupt AF and also dragging their feet with witchbrook. If there's a series I'm unaware about please let me know, as that basic concept is interesting, but I've not seen it executed well.

Trans people need to steal harry potter and make it woke af
13
u/collecterofbooks Sep 14 '26
And then we should give it names that you would see in a family guy joke like, “Harriet Potter and the closet of secrets” but then actually write it exceptionally well and revolutionise the writing industry for a laugh
6
u/Sacri_Pan Sep 14 '26
There is a real life "Harry Potter" that transitioned to Helen Potter

Oh sweet XD
I just like the name Harriet for H-names, it’s got so many good nicknames

I actually read a fanfic with this exact premise back when I actually cared about HP. Transfem Lily (aka Harry but transitioned) and it was a rewrite of all seven books
11
u/Fancy_Chips Sep 14 '26
Why steal Rowling when we already have Rick Riordan? He wrote like 5x as many books as she did.

Can I interest you in Welcome to Demon School, Iruma-kun? Essentially anime Harry Potter, except:
- The kindly old headmaster outright adopts the protagonist instead of leaving him with his abusive family.
- Said kindly old headmaster also has a valet who becomes the protagonist's parental figure. The valet is nonbinary.
- The strict teacher with a grudge against the protagonist isn't a creepy stalker or anything, he's just very uptight and serious.
- There are multiple openly, explicitly gay or bi characters.
- You can make a reasonable case that the protagonist himself is genderfluid.
- There's a significant story arc that revolves around a complicated and toxic but explicitly romantic relationship between two girls.
- There's another significant story arc that revolves around the protagonist using the powerful political connections he's made through kindness and empathy to help an oppressed ethnic minority gain political autonomy.
- One of the major villains is a fascist who wants to do an ethnic cleansing, including deporting the protagonist. This is portrayed as a fate worse than death.
Also it's just generally very good.

Periooooood. Sadly some people will never understand this (including some trans folks who themselves have bought the game and still supported her… I saw it myself and they just don’t want to face the truth)
