Controversial Post 53002

Post image

In response to a post I saw yesterday

Not trying to take away from pride month, don’t get me wrong. But why is there a maximum of one thing per month

Also, the snarky vibe of it really pissed me off

I thought men's mental health month was November? Isn't that what the whole Movember things about?

666

u/PTVoltz Jun 01 '26

Copy-pasted from a comment I wrote in one of the Warhammer subs (based on some quick research and trying to separate regional stuff which is... harder than it seems):

For America, June is Men's Mental Health month and November is general Men's Health month (though there is some crossover there, with mental health included and heavily focused on over physical).

In the UK it's nearly reversed: November is Men's Mental Health Awareness month (often called Movember), and June has Men's Health Week in the middle (this year 15th to 21st, though with a similar focus on mental health over physical).

187

u/Typo-repose Peggy :3 Jun 01 '26

Ah, that explains it then. I'm in the UK

45

u/polarbearreal I don't ususally comment here, congrats. Jun 01 '26

Why from one of the warhammer subs is my question?

61

u/PTVoltz Jun 01 '26

Somebody made a "Happy Mens Mental Health Month!" post on Grimdank (which Reddit has been recommending me for a while despite not really being into Warhammer since a bunch of fiascos a few years back), it started something of an argument where the above question of which month it's actually meant to be came up, and I got curious so did some research and posted the info as a reply.

It came up again here like 20 minutes later, so I just copy-pasted the info (minus a little snarky bit about some UK people claiming to care so much about the June mental health month despite both it not actually existing over here and them having no idea what the Health Week is).

28

u/polarbearreal I don't ususally comment here, congrats. Jun 01 '26

Ah, you know checks out for warhammer fans actually. Literally only two groups, dudes who think the imperium is right, and then there are the normal people.

10

u/Environmental_Top948 Jun 01 '26

Isn't it like the whole plot of one of the books that imperium made a mistake and sent a bunch of new recruits to the front line and the whole thing was only one surviving slightly longer than the rest? Like I thought it was obvious that the imperium isn't right but no one survives long enough to question them.

10

u/polarbearreal I don't ususally comment here, congrats. Jun 01 '26

That might be a canon explanation but I was referring to the actual fans. Like those kinds of black templar fans vs most other people

5

u/Environmental_Top948 Jun 01 '26

I got called a tourist too many times the last time I tried to get into the series to actually bother interacting with other fans. So luckily I don't know what Black Templar is. I just read a book a couple years ago and played Space Marine like 15 years ago.

10

u/polarbearreal I don't ususally comment here, congrats. Jun 01 '26

Oh, black templars are just one of the factions in the imperium that seems to attract all the xenophobic people. They're hardly even more racist than other factions, they're just the faction that wants to kill everything harder than every other kill everyrhing faction.

I thought Movember was about prostate cancer.

173

u/Smyley12345 Jun 01 '26

Prostate cancer and men's mental health. A lot of the Movember material out there is anti-suicide.

42

u/durkvash Jun 01 '26

Wait, are you meaning to tell me I can't suicide on my birthday? My day is ruined

27

u/Smyley12345 Jun 01 '26

I'm going to say suicide is off the table for both birthdays and un-birthdays. Sorry if that ruins your week, I just wouldn't want there to be an unfortunate misunderstanding.

9

Made me think, maybe moustaches are the November equivalent to what rainbow flags are in June...

4

u/Aeon_Fux Jun 01 '26

I don't know if you (and the person you're responding to) are joking but that's literally what Movember is. I am just now learning it originated here in Australia so it's possible it's not as well known in other countries.

2

u/Herover Jun 01 '26

I've only heard about it in a haha moustaches-fashion, I learned something new today!

3

u/Very-confused-now Jun 01 '26

With the amount of flags I saw at a pride parade I attended yesterday, that would be awesome.

There would be so many moustached faces… they should make a moustache parade at the end of Movember.

8

u/Yargon_Kerman Jun 01 '26

As much as I agree with the sentiment that the whataboutism is bad; this is also pretty symptomatic of one of the major issues with toxic masculinity and mental health.

We should bring it up other times, but it's treated as a joke and that genuinely makes me very sad to see.

I wish straight guys treated men's mental health day like pride.

Imagine a parade of dudes showing off cool sticks they found, someone reversing a ute full of gravel while the others give him unnecessary direction, an orchestra of people clicking tongs and making gun noises with a cordless drill, nude greek wrestling. Just harmless dude stuff.

Instead they ignore the day completely unless using it in a straw man argument. And don't actually care about mental health enough to got to therapy 🙃

2

u/Vivid--Syrup Jun 02 '26

This actually sounds awesome

If people were suggesting stuff like this instead of using mens health as a bad faith argument against pride with no intention to actually do any good I would be much more positive towards it

I can imagine going to some event like that to support my guy friends and clapping for them as they build a pile of cool sticks that make them happy

I've been online since 2008 and it's always been November that was talked about. I hadn't even heard about this June thing til literally this year and 99% of it's been anti-queer bs. My guess is a lot of people share this experience.

As if being queer and a man are mutually exclusive.

Just start hosting events. Literally nobody is stopping you. Almost like it's just an excuse to attack a marginalized group by pretending they're actually way more marginalized.

But when it comes time for them to address how patriarchal society is a root cause of men's mental health issues they'll fight you every step of the way

u/Emperor_Joker Trans-Femme Phenom - Streak: 194 Jun 01 '26

It can be two (or more) things, the issue is most of the other things were put in place after pride month was established to delegitamize pride month. Specifically so they can react to posts about pride month with shit like "why can't we focus on real crisis? This is men's mental health month". That's why it was only established in June by conservative states and institutions. There's a reason you hear complaints about it "also being men's mental health month" and not about it also containing Juneteenth.

Also Men's Mental Health Month is in November.

20

u/CanadianODST2 Jun 01 '26

Actually June was chosen because of Father’s Day being in June.

Men’s mental health month is June in NA. And was chosen and was actually first official in the mid 1990s while pride month became official in 1999.

On top of that Father’s Day dates back to the 1910s. So June has been the time for men’s health related stuff for a long time.

While November does also have stuff, in NA it’s more cancer related.

The right doesn’t actually care, they use it to hide behind

13

u/BombOnABus Jun 01 '26

Exactly, it's a bad faith celebration for them. Obviously gay men, trans men, and masculine nonbinaries among others all can benefit from destigmatizing and raising awareness of the mental health issues facing men, specifically, in our society. All of us can benefit from learning about it and seeing how we can be better at supporting men ourselves.

The idea that awareness and advocacy is a zero-sum game is the right's mindset. They mistake losing privilege for oppression, but the reality is that a world where boots aren't on necks is a better world for everyone, because once you've set the precedent some people can be devalued or have their rights stripped you've set a precedent that it can be done to anyone.

Are you talking about the Florida law that declared June to be Men's month?

The one that provided fiscal support and resources for men and intentionally excluded women?

It's an unamerican law, does not comport with 14A.

page 21 > Grants that comprehensively address the needs of fathers, such as assisting them in finding employment, managing child support obligations, transitioning from a period of incarceration, accessing health care, understanding child development, and enhancing parenting skills.

page 23 > Assist at-risk male students who are in middle school or high school in developing social, emotional, and cognitive skills to prepare them for future success.

And page 33 has the month designation.

13

u/unnamedwastaken Jun 01 '26

I feel like both of these things are good, but there really isn't any reason to restrict it to one gender.

16

u/PeacefulPromise Jun 01 '26

because november is men’s mental health month and the only reason it’s ever brought up during june is as an attempt to invalidate pride by people who can’t be bothered to even check if it’s already a thing.

18

u/D_creeper0 Jun 01 '26

It would appear that this isn't true everywhere. A lot of countries have June be men's mental health month while some others have it in November.

6

u/tiggertom66 Jun 01 '26

You couldn’t even be bothered to check this out yourself. June is in fact men’s mental health month too, it’s got international recognition and was chosen to coincide with Father’s Day.

There’s definitely plenty of overlap with Movember, which raises awareness and encourages screening for conditions that disproportionately affect men. It’s primarily focused on prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and expanded to include mental health issues.

8

u/jancl0 Jun 01 '26 edited Jun 01 '26

November is not mens mental health month. June is internationally recognised as mens mental health month. June also has mens health week, which focuses specifically on physical health. November has movember, but that isn't recognised as a month for mens health, and doesn't have anything to do with mental health anyway

You can literally Google all of this stuff btw. Maybe you shouldn't be trying to call people out for "not even bothering to check" something

44

u/girl-kiss Jun 01 '26

I don't get why it's even a conversation "x against y" when it shouldn't even be a question. 2 things can exist at the same time. People just use it against pride month so that's why people easily see it as such. Some people are shitty and do use them both ways but most people don't. Many people on internet are just sad idiots or even just bots.

I do think your feelings are still very much valid, just giving my point of view <3

2

u/Friendly_Gazelle7843 Jun 07 '26

And do you know what is most interesting? Most time I see posts about how MMHM is against Pride Month it’s posted neither by man nor by LGBT people. Seemingly, we don’t have any single problem with each other but somebody is trying really hard to make us have or at least make it look like we have

2

u/girl-kiss Jun 07 '26

u/Real_Kyryll_Flins Lantern Fae Jun 01 '26

It doesn’t, it’s June in some places and November in others. Pride is just better organized, so it doesn’t have that problem.

But why is there a maximum of one thing per month

Newsflash, Sundays and holidays are canceled. It's all pride month now. Nothing else exists. It's just this one thing.

Because the whole thing exists purely as a whistleblowing "Why do we have Pride Month and not [Thing that already Exists]" bit. I don't think any of those people actually care about a "Men's mental health month" in a way other than getting surface level attention rather than ACTUALLY tackling the underlying reasons what troubles then and how it can actually be improved.

Also you know, because Pride Month is literally already about that, it's about self expression and not ones individuals freedoms to not be constrainted by norms and the roles that are forced on you. That includes men and their stuggles born out of the expectations forced upon them because of their gender, it's not an "exclusive club that you aren't invited to because you stink".

There’s only 12 months in a year. It’s just going to happen multiple awareness months happen in the same month.

I’m both a mentally ill bisexual guy.

6

u/yesindeedysir Jun 01 '26

Pride months is hosted by the gays

Black history month is hosted by black people

Women’s celebrations get hosted by women

The problem is I don’t see men hosting their celebrations, they just expect everyone else to host it for them.

Or they start celebrating it only in spite of pride month or women’s celebrations.

3

u/Chembaron_Seki Jun 02 '26

I don't think it would be well received if men organized events for that, especially since it falls into pride month. So that might be another reason why we don't see such events planned.

You know you can like organize mental health awareness events right? Like pride month gets more attention because the queer community puts in the work. Pride parades dont randomly manifest from the void every June

Honestly making men's mental health month june was a crazy move, especially since it could have been any other month that wasn't taken by something very important.

It feels kinda weird that june was made the official month. I'm not saying men's mental health isn't important, I'm a man myself and I've struggled with mental health and been ignored, but it does kinda feel like an effort to draw attention away from pride month.

I kid you not, I only saw the "Men's Mental Health month" stuff pop up maybe 2-3 years ago. Anyone pushing it always said "no, it's not Pride Month, it's Men's Mental Health month! Do you hate men?" Since these were the same people using that R slur, I assumed it was made-up bullshit cuz they were mad gay people had a month. Those fuckers never gave a shit about us in the first place, and now they want to pretend they care. They can shove it. Or they can prove they care and quit with the slurs, quit calling anything they don't like "autistic", and actually DO something to make things better.

Never seen a single person bring up any mens' health month without the explicit purpose of denying the importance of pride month and demonizing queer folks for some imagined sin against mens' health that we are penetrating.

18

we should stop letting cishet guys just declare themselves “chill ally” types and go back to being the judge of that ourselves lmao

5

u/Vivid--Syrup Jun 01 '26

Did we ever actually let them do that?

I figured it was more just that we don't have the power to make them stop

We need a badge award system for allys

We allocate points based on actions and statements they actually stand behind, to potential allys each month then at the end of the year if they meet the threshold for points we check if they meet all the requirements and if they do they get issued an ally badge

I notice a lot of people seem to have fallen for the trap here

Its an attempt to use our empathy in order to get us to agree to water down pride

Cis straight white men are already the most protected class in the Westen world, only beaten by cis straight white rich people

Pride already includes trans men, gay men, black men, basically everyone who isn't already at the top and are still trying to get equal rights

I don't see them offering to include pride in movember

Its good to have empathy, but don't let bad people use it against us

8 AM June 1st and "men's feelings" are being equated to the importance of queerness in june, the feds truly just are not trying anymore. Bit dissapointed tbh

2

u/Ambitious-Fly3201 Jun 01 '26

Hot take: anyone who equates the mental health of anyone to mere "feelings" that shouldn't be treated with importance does not deserve to be in a queer space. people here are constantly dealing with mental demons everyday just as much as social ones.

Men's mental health absolutely deserves time allocated to it but a month? No. Pride month exists to celebrate commemorate and remember the accomplishments joys and toils of the queer community and so due to the enormous size of the issue an enormous size of time is allocated , While men definitely suffer be completely real with me , the average man has it infinitely better than any queer .They deserve a week , a week is fair and time enough for such but a month is ludicrous.

Also I personally buy into the conspiracy that MMH month was invented by the right to give queerphobes something to replace pride month with

u/angelstatue hairy men and fucked up shit Jun 01 '26

i have been seeing people respond to "happy pride month" with this as a sort of gotcha as if pride and mental health awareness do not go hand in hand anyway...

i see people using it the same way they use international women's day as a time to "but what about-" November!!!!!!!!

so tldr both can and should be celebrated but let's not use one to invalidate the other

32

u/GinaBinaFofina Jun 01 '26

Men don't seem to wanna celebrate or spread awareness for Men's Mental Health month. They seem to want to pick a one sided battle with the gays.

8

u/CellaSpider Jun 01 '26

Well for starters, I thought that it was in November we did that, and additionally, it feels like the only time I ever hear about the June one is in response to pride month.

It’s never “men’s mental health month parade in Ottawa” it’s always “why didn’t we get a men’s mental health month parade” as though parades just appear when it is decided something is a month.

In either case, I have no problem with it in a vacuum, but as it stands it feels like the June MMHM is similar to “All Lives Matter” where it’s an agreeable concept used to oppose a different good thing.

That being said, I’d be happy to be proven wrong.

17

u/D0ctahP3ppah Jun 01 '26

I’d take it seriously if it wasn’t so obviously something made by conservative focus groups to undermine Pride and the queer community as a whole. Also the men’s mental health crisis is caused by patriarchy, so maybe men should look inward as to why their mental health is so fucked.

7

u/D0ctahP3ppah Jun 01 '26

Queer people are not responsible for their own oppression. Men are responsible for the mental self harm they inflict upon themselves.

3

u/Corvus1412 Jun 02 '26

I think the 2 go quite well together. Men with lgbtq-related “phobias” generally have some mental health issues they should work out (they do have a phobia(s) after all).

5

u/TheNullOfTheVoid cis ally to trans people Jun 01 '26

It is funny to me that some people are so mean and hateful that they hear about one marginalized group getting attention or recognition for the help they need, and it makes them ignore the other attention and recognition that other people actually need, because the fact that it already exists goes against their narrative.

Men's mental health matters, AND ALSO so does the mental health of women, nonbinary people, literally anyone and everyone regardless of being trans or cis, the mental health of children, everyone.

Bigots hear about Women's Day or Pride Month and are like "What about Men or Veterans Month?" and everyone is rightfully like "That's November"

Hell, I just learned that June is both Pride Month and also Men's Health Month (at least in USA but November is also Men's Mental Health Month, but they usually pretend mental health problems aren't real, so...) but bigots act like you need to pick and choose.

Who knew they had such sensitive little emotions lmao

It's more so about how people complain "Well why don't old military men or cis guys get a month to themselves"? When they already have dedicated months. I believe the post you saw might've been a response to that if anything :3

4

u/King_krympling Jun 01 '26

There's only 12 months of course there is gonna be overlap now If you excuse me I will go back to enjoying my pride month, my mens mental health month and send hugs out to the non-bigots to enjoy them to and hopefully a change of heart to the bigots

4

u/C0d3An0n2 The Cassinator Jun 01 '26

2

u/slumberjak Jun 01 '26

People only seem to care about women’s sports when the topic of trans people comes up. They don’t actually watch or invest in women’s leagues.

They complain about Men’s Day on international Women’s Day. But they don’t celebrate the actual day when it comes.

It’s not that anyone has a problem with celebrating both things this month. But when people bring it up it’s usually disingenuous.

How do you plan to celebrate Men’s Mental Health month?

2

u/dexdpup Jun 02 '26

The issue is simple: the men who actually celebrate this month are sparse. Most of them don't know it exists. It's just used as a tool to polarize against queer people. By moving it to a different month, this would be a lot less annoying for everyone. Mens mental health is just a tool for right wing people to make people more hateful. And it's unfair to men everywhere, that this is something they keep getting away with. As queer ppl, we can include mens mental health in our celebrations, we need to finally recognise that men are a massive part of our own community. We need to put focus on the fact that mental health issues are horrible, and due to social norms, men tend to be more heavily affected by them. The patriarchy hurts men. "Us" putting attention in that, and including men and making safe spaces for men is just going to push positivity, which is never wrong imo.

2

u/Tahmas836 Jun 02 '26

Men’s mental health month only exists in name only. It exists only as a way to detract from pride. It never holds any significance outside of homophobia.

When have you ever seen a parade for it? Massive crowds? It should have a larger audience than pride, but nobody celebrates it. Because it’s not real, it is just a name.

The only reason you respect it is because men’s mental health is a good cause. But in spite of the name, that’s not what “men’s mental health month” is about, it’s about homophobia and transphobia.

3

u/capitan_turtle Jun 01 '26

I try to practice being a decent human being regardless of the month

Gay Men, Bi Men, Trans Men, this is their month too, and I think at least us transfems have gotta remember not to ostracize men just because of our trauma with patriarchy

I just call it larp month now. It's the month everyone pretends to give a shit about one or the other and then they quickly forget soon after.

2

We just need more months about trying to get cis men to get help with their depression. It’s not a constant talking point there’s a mental healthcare crisis. We gotta get the news out. You’re right we can give up some of our speaking time for this very important announcement.
