u/fake_user_34 18h ago
for a remedy game though, this is great news. I know, remedy is like blade runner in terms of artistic greatness. Cult following, fantastic films, box office failures for the most part. Remedy does get their money back though, but it takes them time so they're not failures, just not as popular.

u/Grintastic 15h ago
I really thought Alan wake 2 would break this curse. Such a well made game.
46
u/BancoBee 14h ago
While AW2 is one of the best games of all time imo it was a survival horror game thus making it hard to compete from the jump. They did recoup a lot of money the following year after release thankfully.

u/corvettee01 12h ago
If it wasn't for Baldur's Gate 3, I think they would have taken way more awards.

In exchange for such a deal they take a big upfront payment from Epic (plus probably a smaller cut of sales going to Epic Vs. the 30% Valve takes), without knowing their financial situation they may have been nearly out of money after Alan Wake 2 and didn't have enough cushion to wait for sales numbers to keep themselves afloat. A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush
4
u/Willporker 13h ago
They really shot themselves in the foot by their exclusivity deal with epic for the publication of AW2. They probably didn't understand how impactful basically not releasing on pc has to word of mouth and exposure. It likely killed their console sales and any momentum it would have originally.
17
u/fake_user_34 13h ago
Well the game wouldn't be made without that deal. Game literally got made off epics money.
→ More replies (5)9
u/Acesofbases 9h ago
Epic funded AW2. There would be no AW2 without them.
They're literally the publisher. They covered 100% of both the development and marketing.

u/Sea-Manufacturer-358 8h ago
Yeah would have been very interesting to see how a steam release would have affected AW2 but it sounds like AW2 wouldn't have been made at all without Epic's money so I'm glad we got it one way or another.
→ More replies (2)2
u/Guilty-Cut3358 14h ago
If they release it on steam (which I think they can’t/won’t) and put a 40 dollar price tag on it I think it would sell millions more
65
u/PurpsMaSquirt 17h ago
Agreed, but let’s not overlook this is Remedy’s best- and fastest-selling game. So this should be a win for them. And no doubt, like the first Control, Resonant will continue to sell consistently over the next 2-3 years.
This bodes well for Remedy fans hoping for more Alan Wake and Control content.
Here’s to hoping they hit 2MM copies sold by end of December! 🤞

I was actually hoping it was getting close to 2 million by now. Game's an absolute banger, critically acclaimed and highly rated by players, bit September and October were so stacked. Really hoping it will get the love it deserves and people don't sleep on this one.

As I recall, Remedy games have a history of selling slowly at first, but having an extremely long tail from word of mouth. I wonder how this compares to Control or AW2´s first month sales
47
u/fake_user_34 17h ago
Vastly faster. I think it took 3 months or so to get the same milestone.
16
u/AllPerspicacity 17h ago
Not to mention people like me waiting for the physical release. I just bought & got it delivered today, I'm sure I'm not the only one who doesn't do preorders/digital buys.
7
u/ShrkBiT 17h ago
preorders and physical sales are likely already included in that number, most of the time, physical sales are counted by sales to distributors, not sales to customer, as they don't really have great insight to how many sales happen from store to customer and what remains on shelf.
The fact that Amazon ran out of steelbook editions and cancelled orders is a good sign though (for sales, not for customers), seem they underestimated how many they could sell.2
u/AllPerspicacity 17h ago
True, I'm interested to see if the demand means they run dry in retail locations. Our walmart, gamestop & bestbuy are out already locally, I managed to nab the last copy even thought the person on the phone said they'd fully stocked them the day before.
4
u/antroidi 15h ago edited 12h ago
Easily quickest million copies sold for Remedy even though physical versions were delayed. In my opinion it's amazing for Remedy as the digital sale started 24th of september.

I still need to buy it. Suprised I haven't already considering how much I adored the first one, but have just had other priorities since it released.
I'll probably nab it next week and jump in

u/No_Project5633 17h ago
Some people in the comments have very unrealistic sales expectations. For a studio like Remedy, selling a million copies in the first three weeks is excellent news. Plus, there are still the Game Awards nominations and the holiday season to look forward to. This could very well be the game that starts generating a profit for them the fastest and now that they’re self-publishing, all the earnings go directly to them.
Well done, Remedy! Congratulations
39
u/fake_user_34 16h ago
Yeah, I think the way the current economy in gaming makes it seem this isn't good. No, this is great, especially for the games budget.
I guess people are so used to inflated $100 million+ budget for triple A games that anything less is considered a failure. This isn't Marathon where they spent $250 million on a game with 4 maps, one being locked until the weekends.
This is a $50 million budget game, 1 million sold is fucking fantastic.
2
u/Technical-Branch4998 8h ago
Wait was the game's budget actually ~50m? Because if so then that means it's probably almost broken even already which is amazing news

And some people have to scratch their money together to get it. :) Like I do but I'm excited for the day I'll be able to buy it. Till then I'm VERY happy with my purchase of the first part for 3,99€! What a steal! I instantly fell in love with the game and its lore. It's one of a kind.

Hey uhh any chance you plan to play resonant on PC?
Edit: fuck nvm, was going to give you the code I got when I purchased my 5070 ti but I guess it's directly tied to the GPU I bought, or at the very least having a 50 series card. How lame.

65

14
u/HolyFreakingXmasCake 17h ago
Turns out marketing a banger game works!
5
u/SadKazoo 17h ago
I think Wolverine having horrible atmosphere around it really helped this game get pushed even more.
7
u/Oleleplop 17h ago
Maybe a little but i doubt it had any direct impact, Control is quite niche to begin with, Hardcore wolverine fans will buy the game regardless of its state.
BUt Control while still niche has its dedicated fanbase that will speak with enthusiasm about the game and share about it.And obviously, there was more marketing from Remedy this time.
2
u/Space_Ace56 14h ago
I mean I’ve seen A LOT of coverage from more general channels comparing resonant favourably to wolverine

44
u/Appropriate_Foot242 17h ago

u/Coffescout 17h ago
Would’ve never gotten made if it wasn’t an epic exclusive.
It sucks, but it’s the truth.
12
u/SamuraiRPG 17h ago
I agree with this, and it would’ve taken a lot less time to break even. But Remedy isn’t some huge studio with a ton of funding behind it, sometimes they have to publish exclusives, or find a publisher with their own rule sets.
I think it’s unfortunate that dev studios with as much heart and passion are limited by platform and money.

The fact it hit 1 million alongside all these other high profile releases is great news. This would have still been an accomplishment without the competition. Look forward to seeing it continue to sell and see what remedy delivers next. As long as they can avoid getting locked to a launcher/platform sky is the limit with their level of creativity.
17
u/Static_Dreams151129 18h ago
The fastest ever game to reach 1 million sales in Remedy's catalogue, it beat Alan Wake II by a month and a week. Absolutely deserved momentum for Remedy to succeed like this.

u/Successful-Entry9490 17h ago
1 million is a great feat!!! i think it’s incredibly undermined how much that is when you have excuse my french Numb Nut games like sports, COD’s, selling in the upwards of 100 mil+.
back in the day when a regular game hit a million sells, which took years, they would get the Greatest Hits banner and red label or Gamers Choice…. i’m not too sure what the budget was for this title but that’s approx 60-70 $mill! i hope it’s enough so far to make its budget back! but in 3 weeks! pretty good IMO!
8
u/fake_user_34 17h ago
Well they said the budget was $50 million and they need to sell 2 million units to break even. So by this point, yeah, it seems they will get that and profits long term. They got 2 years to get to 2 million.
→ More replies (2)3
u/1ucius 15h ago
If the demand stays high and they don’t do deep discounts for a year, they will cruise past that really fast. Their estimates are reserved, for safety reasons. Also, if it gets a good showing at TGA’s - I’m sure that’d boost sales considerably. Anyway, looking good for Remedy so far.
9
8
u/Ill_Statistician_938 17h ago
Knowing this game was make or break for them I’m so glad it’s selling well. Losing remedy would be a huge loss to the industry
8
u/kharnzarro 17h ago
considering how stacked the past 2 months have been in an effort to dodge GTA6 and the lack of physical until now
and the fact it was cheaper to make than alan wake 2 and self published this seems really good
15
u/BuckRusty 11h ago
I never buy new games - always wait for a deep sale as a) I dislike how prices have rocketed, and b) I have a backlog so won’t get to them this year anyways…
I preordered this, and have it sat in my backlog to play probably Jan/Feb…
I have loved every Remedy game, and want them to break free of Epic - so did my part this time…
9

People are so clueless. Even the price hike from 60 to 70 is fine if you consider how much everything else in the industry (let alone in the rest of the world) has inflated.

Would have sold more if Amazon and other stores didn’t cancel all the steelbook
5
u/o_o_o_f 17h ago
It maybe would have sold a very small amount more, like a pretty negligible amount. Downloads are the majority of total AAA games sales, and plastic cases make up the majority of those physical sales. Most game releases at this level print maybe 10k to 30k steelbooks, and don’t always sell that stock out.

Hell yea. Great news. I want Remedy to be successful. The original Control is still one of my favorite video games ever but I hope to see a stronger mix of FMV/Live action videos like with Alan Wake II or Quantum Break. I didn't think there was enough in Control Resonant but I also acknowledge they had a smaller budget than Alan Wake II.

Congrats Remedy, impressive because this is probably the most stacked fall schedule I ever witnessed. This game is amazing, and deserved more sales, but I won't harp on that. This is easily their fastest selling title.

I picked up the OG Control and it's pretty fun, but I must be dumb as hell because I cannot use the map worth a damn.
10
u/EvilTrainMan19 12h ago
I just recently replayed Control and I finally figured out the secret to navigating around. The map is basically a prank on the player. It's entirely useless except for maybe using it for fast travel to get into the general area of your objective.
Other than fast traveling, ignore the map entirely, and use the signs hanging up around the game to find your way around.
I promise that's not me doing the whole, "real gamers just explore the world and find their way through vibes" thing. No, it is literally 1000x easier to find where you want to go by using the wall signs. They'll point you in a direction that the map says is the opposite of the way you want to go, but keep watching for the signs, and 3 minutes later, you'll be at your objective.
It almost feels like Remedy designed the game to be played this way, then got nervous at the end of development and tacked a useless map on at the end.

The map will just give you a general idea of where things are. Pay attention to the environment, most of the time there are signs on the walls literally pointing to the path you need to take.

For Remedy that's great, although I think they have better games. I enjoyed the first Control as well as Alan Wake games or even old Max Payne games more. Resonant is a good game, but I have my issues with the gameplay. Although I must admit, the structure of the game invites players that enjoy soulslike games or even technically also metroidvanias, so that could be a factor that attracts other players.
3
u/fake_user_34 17h ago
Game can not be more different than a souls like game. This is more like Nier Automata in terms of gameplay. But yes, it is very metroidvania, but so was the first game.
