Nah Germany is starting to fall back too sadly. The very far right party "AfD" is gaining more and more votes every month in polls, and many of their members are Nazis.
They won a state election very recently and their candidate for that election shortly after said in an interview, that they would need/use 'military equipment" for their planed 'remigration' (throwing millions of Immigrants out of Germany, even people with citizen ship).

4
u/Accurate-Visual9793 24d ago
And it's not like the housing situation in Germany is particularly good, especially in the cities! Too many retired people with locked in rents who are occupying larger apartments leaving young families to fight over expensive two bedroom ones. To be fair to the retired people - it'd be a massive financial hit (possibly more than they can afford) to downsize. Construction is not exactly fast either. I've been watching one apartment building near my work being constructed for the last 4 years now.

My wife and I had a long distance relationship. I can't give too many details because I don't want to dox myself, but we spent 5 years doing it before we finally got married. We've been together over a decade and we've got kids. We are loving our happily ever after.

Currently in a long distance relationship with my wife and kids due to work. We have been living part for almost threes years now. We have been fortunate that we have been able to see each other at least once a month. But my kids don’t always get to see me.
Currently they haven’t been able to see any of them for 4 months. We have been so fortunate that we have had the ability to see each other as frequently as we did. It’s been hard not physically being together. Technology is amazing that we can stay connected as much as possible. The fact I can call, FaceTime, and send video messages when we are not both available has been incredible.
I am so happy for you guys and I hope you guys never have to ever spend time apart again.

My wife and I met in a philosophy discussion group online, waited nearly 6 years to be together. She's from Malaysia, I'm from the UK. We were on call every single possible second. Finally built up enough money to move to a little flat and fly her over. We had six months together before her visa free visit was up, then we went to Malaysia together to get married. The process is normally a year long, we got it done in a month while I worked half days remotely. We've been married three years this year, and I'd do it all again a hundred times over. The right person is absolutely worth it.

I love this. My partner and I met online and had a long distance relationship for about the same length of time. We kept it alive after a while by running a Skype call 24/7 for years. This is not a criticism on op and her husband, I am an immigrant myself (not in Germany tho). One person moving to a wealthy EU country like Germany and then trying to move the rest of the family over via a reunification visa has been a "tactic" for so many years and one of the main reasons parties like the AfD in Germany are rising in popularity, he will have a tough time getting a job when companies find out his immigration status. And it won't be getting easier in the foreseeable future with right wing parties getting more popular everywhere. I wish them all the luck in the universe. (I did long distance for 3 years during the pandemic before finally closing the gap at the tail end of covid, and I still struggle to find work even after becoming fluent in the local dialect)
16
u/Tiny_Fee7259 24d ago
that is also true, sadly. one of the many reasons so many idiots are voting AfD right now is the immigration into and abuse of the the german welfare system, though the family unifaction visa usually does not give her husband access to the welfare system and she will have to carry them bith bith financially until he is able to land a job. i wish them well.
27
u/MalleDigga 24d ago
highest voted afd state is the one with least economic power in Germany AND the one who takes on least amount of immigrants. So what you don't know you only fear. Typical humans. So annoying. But the east of Germany has been fkd since the Russian owned the place in DDR. They were left behind be the state kinda yes. Right wing movement everywhere sucks
6
u/NecroVecro 24d ago
AND the one who takes on least amount of immigrants. So what you don't know you only fear.
This is true but at the same time the number of foreigners in there has more than doubled since 2015 (as has their general share of the population) and such an increase can be very noticeable and controversial in a state with an aging, declining population, even without all of the fear mongering coming from the far right.

u/Tiny_Fee7259 24d ago
Today the second german state, mecklenburg vorpommern, had votings and AfD got the most votes again. its really frustrating right now. East germany though is at fault too, imo, they had more than enough time to change, be innovative, built something, but there is so much racism, always had been, also a lot of „victim mentality“. i have relatives there and these guys are really uneducated, stubborn, racist and love Putin and russia, sadly. and everything is always everyone elses fault. many young people have left or will leave east germany because of that. the ones who could built something better in the east of germany have left or will leave (what i totally understand. i would not move there too).

The thing is, family reunification visas are often exploited. There are big loopholes. Here in Italy, for example, there are fake marriages: people get paid around +€10k to marry someone and let them into the country, then either divorce afterward or stay married on paper without actually living together. There are also cases where people who earn very little bring their spouse and children over, and now the whole household ends up on welfare benefits, which feels unfair when you think about how these systems were originally designed
There should be some kind of income threshold, preferably close or higher than the average: you should only be allowed to bring a spouse or children over if you earn decent money. Helping as many people as possible sounds nice in principle, but it's ultimately a question of sustainability. European employees on average already get back net only around 50 to 70% of what their employers actually pay in. Immigrants exploiting the system obviously isn't the only issue, and honestly it's probably a small piece of a much bigger problem, but sustainability is the real concern here. And people tend to get angrier at a foreigner, who's seen as a guest expected to respect the host and not take advantage of them, than at a native when something goes wrong
Part of why integration works better in the US is that there are little to no benefits. If you don't work, that's on you. It attracts people who want to excel and aim for the best, and that shows up in the results. I'm not saying the American system is good, but there's definitely a middle ground to be found
4
u/toptnc 24d ago
Don't say "abuse of the the german welfare system", say "german welfare system underfunding" instead. It's more accurate.

Can you find me a statistic that shows that immigrants in Germany are disproportionately abusing the welfare system or are you just quoting AFD politicians to seem more "neutral" or "centrist"?
5
u/insipidstars 23d ago
I find this take v divorced from reality, for family reunification you need to be gainfully employed and prove to the government that the partner reuniting with their family has enough money to support them. Even students need to have a blocked account - which is around 10k to 14k euros per family member to be able to bring their family over. What do people think? That a person working a job alone will continue working as a single person, just a cog in the economy no human attachments? No family, ever? It is ludicrous to think like this. Asylum seekers are different and that’s something we can have a discussion about for sure but i’d point you to any Germanembassy’s list of requirements fot family reunification before you decide to play devil’s advocate, and that too, poorly.
4
u/mr_Joor 23d ago
Youve missed my point entirely. I am not playing devils advocate. Im not advocating for anything here. Im simply pointing out how rightwingers view immigrants, not what the actual reality of immigration laws is. Also, OP did mention they tried to get him a job for years before trying the reunification way so that conflicts with what youre saying. Again, Im not a German nor do I live in Germany so I cant tell you the ins and outs of German immigration.

Call me crazy, but there is a massive gulf between chain migration of siblings, cousins, etc. and your spouse and children.

2
u/Tiny_Fee7259 24d ago
oh it is, because germany right now gets a bit flooded by students / job seekers from india, tunesia and so on. these poor lads are told they get jobs there. they dont. Especially no well payed jobs and not without very good knowledge of the german language, sadly. without a job / without a guaranteed income, family unification visa means that she has to earn enough for both of them and that her husband will have to leave germany the moment there is no guaranteed income. he also wont get social welfare. I hope she can keep her job and he will manage to find a job so they can stay together
→ More replies (1)3
u/TENTAtheSane 24d ago
It is not the job seekers causing the problem, local or foreign. Everyone complains of a worker shortage all the time, and yet somehow there is also concurrently high unemployment, that points to deeper problems.
Despite everyone warning that this was a bad idea, germany became too reliant on Russia for energy needs, and then made the decision to cut them off without sufficient alternatives, making energy prices higher and more unstable; unluckily the iran crisis happened also, compounding this; this makes profitability of industries more uncertain, and banks deal with increased risks by charginy higher interest rates for loans, so both operational and capital costs are higher for companies; so they stop scaling up and start reducing their workforce, which increases the people taking out of social security system while simultaneously decreasing the people feeding into it; which strains the budget and makes it harder for the government to afford alternate infrastructure, thus creating a feedback loop.
→ More replies (1)3
u/Tiny_Fee7259 24d ago
They arent the cause of the current problems, indeed. but they come to germany with false hopes, false information and are confronted with the reality of not getting a job, not even getting housing because even natives have huge problems finding affordable housing in germany. germany simply cant take in more job seekers / people who cant get jobs at the moment. I feel for the ones coming here and getting their hopes crushed and I wish the artist and her husband the best

Long distance is difficult.
I had met my partner in university in Japan during my year abroad. When it came time for me to go back home we carried on with a long distance relationship... for four years. Then she decided to move to Germany for me on a WFH visa. At the end of that year we got married and got her a spouse visa.
A few years later now, we live in Japan again :p

I had a three-year long-distance relationship followed by three years living together with that person followed by another year apart before we could finally be together again and get married, and we've been married for 11 years now. It's tremendously hard for two people to stay close when they're not physically close, but it's absolutely achievable when 1) they know they can and will be together again at a specific point in the future and 2) both people have decided they're going to make it work. That is, neither one has the attitude of "we're going to see if we can make this work", but rather "I have found the love of my life, I'm not letting go for anything, this is going to be so hard but we're going to endure this together and make this work."
For OP to have made it through this without point number 1 is really remarkable. It's so much harder without that and really speaks to how strongly they must have embodied point 2. Well done, OP! You guys are going to be together for life, many congrats!
I think some long distance relationships happen when one or both people kind of know it's not going to work out from the jump, but feel they have to "give it a try" because they can't bear to break things off just yet. Those are of course doomed and I think that's the source of the general attitude of pessimism which surrounds long-distance relationships.
