and I the manifestation of reddit itself
That thing is WAY to cute to be reddit incarnate. Maybe it's hiding it's Eldritch abomination just below the surface or something
And yes it can be quite hard to amass a following in general. Especially here. But I think you've done very well for yourself /u/andythedrewbear you've hit the top 25 more than a few times! And I love your characters
Unfortunately I cannot comment on the whole reddit gold thing. It's... something I guess?

u/Made_Bail May 29 '26
Yeah, Reddit will pay you for engagement/views/upvotes, but as I understand it, the amount you make is very low. I wonder if one of our bigwigs could weigh in? u/pizzacakecomic or u/fieldexplores maybe? I'd be very interested to know how that all works!

u/FieldExplores Gator Days May 29 '26
I only just saw this and don't mind sharing.
After drawing Gator Days for two years and posting three comics a week I have generated...
-drumroll-
$18.65 in Reddit revenue.
So yeah, I can get a burger and fries at Five Guys now.
17
u/Made_Bail May 29 '26
That's just sad. In the meantime, how much money have YOU generated for Reddit through views, page reads, ad revenue, etc?
But hey... Burger I guess!
u/shellbullet17 tagging you just in case you're interested, too, since hours have passed.

Well Ill fucking be, /u/fieldexplores actually beat my projections! Hot damn!
But seriously thats horrible for an exchange rate. Especially from someone who draws...what would yall say like literal MILLIONS of views from his comics which shell out ad revenue? They should at least buy this dude the animal style fries while they are at it
Which if we are being fair....you would barely get some of the LEAST expensive items on Five Guys menu to make 19 bucks work
4
u/Made_Bail May 29 '26
Yeah seriously, some of the comic artists here have probably made Reddit a decent chunk of money. How lame.
3
u/shellbullet17 Gustopher Spotter Extraordinaire May 29 '26
Thats over TWO YEARS too. Like that should easily be a monthly thing for someone like Gator Dad whos posts hit top 3 on r/all multiple times a week
4
u/andythedrewbear May 30 '26
Wow, it’s an honor to get a comment from you! You’re one of my inspirations.

u/Tokumeiko2 May 29 '26
You need to have a lot of recent karma, and awards.
In fact awards are probably more important than the karma by a huge margin.
It's pretty rare for people to pay for awards though, so good luck actually getting the $10 minimum payout.
5
u/Made_Bail May 29 '26
That's sad. Though lately, when I click the awards button, they're usually free to give?
Ill give you one to test. Also because you deserve it. ❤️
4
u/Tokumeiko2 May 29 '26
They're priced in Reddit coins or whatever the currency is called.
4
u/Made_Bail May 29 '26
Do I have reddit coins? How do I check lol..it didn't ask me for money or coins to give you that award
5
u/Tokumeiko2 May 29 '26
I guess we start with some, at the top of the award menu it says I have 85 coins, and that award is priced at 25.
Notably I had 85 even before I received the award so it's not like we get them from receiving awards.
4
u/WeirdAssBeings May 29 '26
Hi, I'm the guy giving y'all free awards, I don't even know how many I can give before I'm given a cap lmfao, every award in the comments so far is from me
9
u/shellbullet17 Gustopher Spotter Extraordinaire May 29 '26
Well assuming it's proportional and Andy here made 15 cents off 40k karma that would mean FieldExplores made roughly a whooping 8-9 bucks
Man that's fucking rough
1
u/Made_Bail May 29 '26
Some of these platforms do tiered rewards, so wondering if the bigger creators get a better rate?
3
u/shellbullet17 Gustopher Spotter Extraordinaire May 29 '26
Hopefully cause 8-9 bucks for 2.2 million karma is a horrible return rate
3
u/Made_Bail May 29 '26
Right? Once every couple of years you can go get a six pack of beer LMAO

That thing is WAY to cute to be reddit incarnate.
It's Snoo, the official Reddit mascot. Do you not know Snoo?
1
u/shellbullet17 Gustopher Spotter Extraordinaire May 29 '26
I know what Snoo is. Its a mascot. This is a manifestation
If reddit itself congealed together to make a single entity I promise you it would not look like Snoo.

u/dorgoth12 May 29 '26
The $0.15 in my sidebar at all times is a badge of honour that I have technically received money for my art and therefore am a professional artist
9
u/Electrical_Shock359 May 29 '26
If this were in person I would give you a quarter on a whim just to beat that record.
9
u/magikarp2122 May 29 '26 edited May 29 '26
I have $0.60. No clue from what, because I don’t post art or anything of value.
EDIT: That didn’t mean give me an award. Don’t give reddit money.
2
u/dorgoth12 May 29 '26
Right, someone just gave me an award too and I swear I wasn't fishing for it. This isn't even my "professional" account where my $0.15 lies dormant

Reddit owns me 0.15 cents from Reddit Gold uwu

u/Made_Bail May 29 '26
Reddit should owe you a lot more. Your comic is the most criminally underrated one here. ❤️

(Pardon me while I rant under your comic)
Yes, Reddit gold is UTTERLY WORTHLESS and it really does make you wonder why they changed THE ENTIRE SYSTEM THAT WAS WORKING PERFECTLY FINE FOR YEARS. But no, 3 years ago they decided to throw all that out the window, tell their user base that admin is entirely untrustworthy, and will go through with something despite no one wanting that.
You hear me S-man? I know your admin techs peek at my profile. NO ONE LIKES THIS. Give us our stupid silver stickers back!
Edit: Alright, who's the wise-[donkey]?

u/shellbullet17 Gustopher Spotter Extraordinaire May 29 '26
Remember OG reddit gold? How someone would buy you premium reddit stuff for a month? That was fun. I liked that. It felt REALLY good when your comment got awarded that

u/Merari01 it's a-me, Merari-o May 29 '26
That's why I have 30 years of reddit premium.
That feature was quintessentially reddit and taking it away was very stupid.
2
u/shellbullet17 Gustopher Spotter Extraordinaire May 29 '26
I've noticed creeping on your profile and frankly? Super jealous. I should have bought a bunch when i saw it was leaving
2
u/Merari01 it's a-me, Merari-o May 29 '26
On some subreddits we gave away years of premium.
I remember r/Nextfuckinglevel had enough coins saved up to give two dozen people a year of premium.
Reddit was so, so stupid to just throw away capital like that. There's a lot less awarding being done now that it doesn't also gift premium.
Edit: You also can't thank people awarding you anymore. So I am doing it here. Thanks for the award, u/WeirdAssBeings

u/shellbullet17 Gustopher Spotter Extraordinaire May 29 '26
Reddit was so, so stupid to just throw away capital like that
Oh I agree. Remember when that one user got like.....300 YEARS of reddit gold? That was CRAZY
5
u/Merari01 it's a-me, Merari-o May 29 '26
We told them again and again and again that taking away something everyone liked was a bad idea. But, reddit is going to reddit.
6
u/Dazed_and_Confused44 May 29 '26
Also you need at least $10 worth of reddit awards to cash out haha

u/Dragon_Bidness May 29 '26
I mean you may not make much here but as a comic fan I go out of my way to support the artists who do stuff I like. I donate to patreons and more recently have been buying books from my favorite reddit comics. Everybody I support is stuff I found here. I doubt I'm alone. There's definitely value here if you can post enough to get a fan base.
Nothing better than a good cartoon man. Keep at it.

u/UpCDownCLeftCRightC Never Safe From Wumbo May 29 '26
That's why I make it a habit to just ignore my feed most of the time and just jump straight over to the comics subreddit. Scroll through and see all the gems the algorithm makes it hard to see.
5
u/Made_Bail May 29 '26
Hahaha, the animated speech bubble piercing his forehead was a fantastic touch.
2
u/KerPop42 May 29 '26
Would you also be able to set up an rss feed?
Also, how viable are comic sites with sidebar ads these days? All my favorites growing up used them
1
u/BombOnABus May 29 '26
Most comic artists who have their own site rely on Patreon/Ko-Fi subscribers to make enough to pay for the site and then take-home cash on top.
That's why so many post on reddit and apps/providers like Webtoons: if you don't have an established following that is buying your merch and supporting you, you definitely can't afford web hosting (especially if you're getting any traffic at all without income to pay for the higher bandwidth tiers).
1
u/KerPop42 May 29 '26
I believe you, but do you mind going into more detail? I host a couple sites on my own, though they aren't popular of course, and it was $300 in hardware, $12/year for my domain, and it runs off my home network. It looks like you might pay $70/year for hosting if you use Cloudflare pages? And I couldn't find the pricing for wordpress
Is that out of budget for a webcomics author?

If you're willing to voice some of your comics, you could also try uploading shorts to YouTube or Tiktok.
