Two big crossover event movies are coming from Marvel and DC: Which one do you think would overall be the better movie?

I see why you say that Man of Tomorrow is a crossover event, but I don't think it's on the same level as Doomsday, and I am going to continue to hope that Doomsday nails the landing. I bet I'll enjoy Man of Tomorrow too but the established cinematic history just isn't there

On the other hand, I think the MCU’s history works against it in some ways. There is nothing in any of the Doomsday promos or trailers that gets me excited. Every time I see one, it just makes me think, “looks like another Marvel movie.” Whereas with MoT, I’m more intrigued.

Yeah I can definitely see that perspective too. the unknowns of man of tomorrow are definitely exciting--what's the tone going to be? how are the characters going to interact with each other? how self contained will it be?

Man of Tomorrow isn't a big crossover movie, it's just Superman 2. They aren't comparable.

James Gunn has explicitly said it multiple times that Man of Tomorrow is NOT Superman 2. He has even implied that the title doesn’t necessarily refer to Superman.

What part of that info makes it a big crossover movie though?

Not as huge of a crossover but Green lantern, Supergirl and Blue Beetle confirmed and rumours of a Wonder Woman introduction

Is Xolo Maridueña coming back as Blue Bettle? He deserved another turn.

2

u/AdCharming7933 14d ago

Ya he’s confirmed, I agree he deserves another shot

Green Lantern and Supergirl showed up in Superman. If adding additional introductions for more characters in this universe makes it a big crossover event, then so was Superman and thus the things OP said about differentiating the two films doesnt make sense at all.

I don’t disagree, but also having 6-7 other superheroes is still a “crossover” whether it’s a “big crossover” or not, not saying it’s avengers level but also far from a solo Superman movie.

Nope. It's cameos.

I didn’t realize you’ve seen the movie, my bad

I've seen Superman, the movie I supposed we were talking with 6-7 other superheroes, since it came out in 2025

I'm not sure why you're answering for Op and their train of thought if what youre saying is also in agreement with me that what they said doesnt make sense for the conversation. I was trying to ask them about their perspective.

It ain’t that serious, my friend. This is a comment section, if you didn’t want people other than op to chime in then you should’ve dm’d them lmao

u/trailerthrash 14d ago

I didnt say anything serious, just reiterated I had a specific question for a specific person and that your input seems to be a rabbit trail rather than anything useful to that query.

It's not the same thing at all. Doomsday is, at least according to the marketing, a line-wide crossover which has been built up to through numerous films. Man of Tomorrow is the follow up to Superman. If just having multiple heroes counts, was Thunderbolts not a big crossover movie? Or Spider-Man Brand New Day?

What about captain America civil war? You consider that a crossover/ensemble movie or a solo movie? I think there’s some middle ground in between the two, we don’t have a trailer for Man of Tomorrow yet so we have no clue how big of roles other characters are playing

1

u/watchman28 14d ago

Granted, Civil War is essentially Avengers 3, but it is ultimately a story about Captain America, so I do think it qualifies as a solo movie.

1

u/AdCharming7933 14d ago

I disagree but to each their own

1

Thunderbolts is absolutely a crossover movie. Brand New Day is not because it is a Peter Parker story throughout its runtime. That cannot be said about the upcoming Man of Tomorrow that it is a Clark Kent story, as Gunn himself has ruled that out, only saying that “Superman is a major part of it, but it is not a Superman movie.”

He's said it's the "Next phase in the Superman saga". I would also be shocked if marketing doesn't make him change the name to something with Superman in the title, as marketing has made him change the name of the past two DC movies.

He’s going with the ‘The Dark Knight’, ‘Logan’ style of titling, where the primary name of the superhero character is not used for the title. I don’t think he’ll shoehorn ‘Superman’ in the title, especially when the S-crest fused with Brainiac’s logo is a clear communicator that who this movie is about.

I'm pretty torn on this one. I get nervous for MoT throwing too much in it, kind of how I felt Superman did. Still really enjoyed it though. Doomsday feels like it might have a big "been there, done that" feeling just with different players, but I have faith that the Russo brothers will at least make it a good ride, if not great.

The problem for me is there isn't a ton of attachment to the current slate of MCU heroes, so the meet and greets in Doomsday won't hit nearly as hard as they did in Infinity War. For Man of Tomorrow, the Gunnverse is still new and watching it establish itself and introduce new major players may just give it an edge.

MoT isn't an event though

Man of tommorow isn’t an event. That said I have 0 interest in seeing doomsday in theaters just because how tf are they going to give every character something to do? Shit would have to be like 5 hours long. If rdj actually plays dr doom proper I’d be happy but not enough to go see it.

I don’t know, but I’ll like Superman 2 better as a matter of my own personal taste

I'm a marvel zombie but I feel like I will enjoy Superman 2 a lot more.

There's very good probablity Doomsday will be formulaic Marvel pew pew fest but there are characters in there I actually care about. Moments in past movies I care about. I want the movie to do good.

New Superman just isn't connecting with me. Current DC movie roster in general is not connecting with me at all. It's all giving generic dollar store fantasy cosplay vibe. I'm about as attached to all of these characters as I am to racist transformers from Dark of the moon or whatever the fuck it was called.

I like Superman more but probably have more confidence in Russos track record in making a better overall film - that said Gunns Superman will win the best musical montage…

Hot take: I'm not a fan of Gunn's needle drops. They make me cringe more often than not.

Alan Silverstri 🥵

DOOM would laugh at the comparison

1

u/JavierLoustaunau 14d ago

Superman is more likely to be entertaining while Doomsday is more likely to feel like an 'obligation'.

Like Superman vs Fantastic Four was nice because both movies felt fun and different than the last decade. Doomsday will probably be very 'infinity war' only with the Russos batting average having gone way down.

u/russellwilliamc 14d ago

Man of tomorrow doesn’t feel as quite as desperate as doomsday

1

u/ShubhangBahadur 14d ago

There’s a lot riding for Marvel on Doomsday than for DC on Man of Tomorrow. Albeit both movies are extremely important for the future of both the studios, both the franchises, and for the superhero genre as a whole.
