I really don’t understand how AI is so bad at counting letters… like I feel like that should be easy for a literal computer to do

36

u/GonzoLeRonzo 1h ago

it’s not AI per se, it’s LLMs.
they don’t process words or numbers as humans see them. instead, they form the input into tokenized chunks and generate an answer based on learned patterns and predictions.

if you ask an LLM to reverse a number, for example, it can easily mess up. reversing a number requires preserving every digit, including zeros, and rearranging them in the exact opposite order. an LLM might instead generate a sequence that looks plausible but accidentally duplicate, drop or change a digit.
their problem solving is different from ours. they don‘t see words or numbers at „face-value“.

"if you ask an LLM to reverse a number, for example, it can easily mess up"
Wow, you're absolutely right

It tends to forget few digits it seems, this could be a useful human-shibboleth.

Sounds like the exact opposite of how computers should work. I don’t want my code to be “interpreted”, I want it to be “compiled”. All my bugs, mistakes and typing errors are what make the software work like it should.

3

u/K3TtLek0Rn 1h ago

It is doing that somewhere the problem is it's really hard to have a computer be able to speak and know what to say next without doing machine learning in this fashion

LLMs aren't trying to execute code and they dont behave like code on purpose.

They are trained on human text, to process text like humans, and that comes with pros and cons. The pros are it can figure out context, it can glaze over typos, and improvise, like most humans do.

The cons are it can make mistakes and bullshit, just like most humans do.

It's because the computing is done at such a raw level of data, that letters don't exist anymore. It's breaking down through translation. Similar to putting text through Google translate 100 times, you don't get the same words out.

5

u/Original_Action8858 2h ago

Ah, I didn’t realize it was done at such a low level. Still surprises me though.

16

u/yerdadzkatt 1h ago

I'd define it more as at a higher level tbh. When an LLM takes input, it does something called tokenization, where it converts the text input into "tokens" which represents words. How a system decides to tokenize things is dependent on the system used, but the idea is that you've made your input into a token vector that's then put through the transformation matrix. Tokenization in its most basic form would be just splitting based on spaces or punctuation. Models read things at the token level, and it's very rare you'd tokenize at the per letter level.

The summary of this is it's bad at it because it can't inspect individual pieces of a token, and so to count letters it would have to know to tokenize every letter in the word as a separate token. Since the system isn't really "thinking" and doesn't understand context, it doesn't know to tokenize it that way when you say that.

It also gets tripped up by random articles saying AI cannot count the numbers of certain letters in the word strawberry etc. Which gets the AI in a full on spiral. If it looks at one of those pages, good chances it'll start counting numbers and counting them wrong.

→ More replies (2)

22

u/Tsoral 2h ago

Because it's not actually counting, nor is it capable of doing so; LLMs (this kind of AI) are made to answer in language that seems about right, which they're pretty good at, but they can't actually do anything else (unless they're given express means to, but most aren't for this kind of thing), so it's just saying something that sounds like a response someone would give to this type of question

5

u/theshane0314 1h ago

My understanding is that its basically predictive text (like on your phone) but its actually really good at it. They dont actually understand anything. They are fed massive amounts of text. Then use all of that text and keywords to predict how you want it to reply.

One of my friends couldn't understand that he isnt teaching it anything. "Im trying to teach it to do X, but I doesn't get it." He kept getting frustrated and I kept telling him thats not really how it works. Its not going to learn like that. I think he eventually figured it out, stopped bitching about it, or gave up on what he was doing. He hasn't mentioned it in a few weeks.

2

u/VellDarksbane 1h ago

Yeah, it's fancy autocomplete. You can get into the weeds about the specifics, but when it is all said and done, that's all Generative AI is. It's making a "best guess" about what would typically come next, it's just that these current models have so much data fed into them, that it feels like they're very smart because the average tends towards correct.

→ More replies (1)

6

u/Original_Action8858 2h ago

Yeah, I never really gave AI much thought since I kinda despise it. But the way people talk about it, I’d have thought it’d actually be able to do basic functions better by now.

12

u/Tsoral 1h ago

The thing is really that it's not made to do any of these basic functions, which is why it's (if I may opine) so stupid that it's being pushed the way it is - it literally cannot understand anything that people give it, so of course it gives the wrong answer quite often, because it literally can only get text that feels right (no matter if it actually is right or not, because that's not what it's meant to do). There are other kinds of AI that can do some of these other things, or at least are better, but those aren't the things that are pushed nowadays or the things that people mean when they say AI (and are generally more niche; most things trained via machine learning have one very specific function, so they're not very useful to the average person)

→ More replies (1)

2

u/StarHammer_01 1h ago

The people who say AI is stupid are using the free model, and yes the free models are really stupid.

The paied ones are much more competent (still not enough for me to pay for them but its company money so whatever).

→ More replies (9)

3

u/Tide__Hunter 1h ago

LLM models generally aren't trained on raw text input, but rather, the text gets converted into "tokens". These tokens could be things like whole words or blocks of letters of some size, or some other system, but whatever the case, the format of the LLM input (and output) don't actually let it easily count letters.

Also LLMs are, in effect, really fancy autocomplete. They aren't built to count letters, they're built to guess what word should go next.

3

u/guru2764 1h ago

To be fair this isn't something it can do, like at all

A calculator can't tell you who won the superbowl

How it usually solves problems like this is that it has access to write and run python scripts or whatever to count the letters (if it's a paid model usually)

It's a word prediction machine at its core, each next possible word/letter/symbol has a number determining how likely it is that it will be a correct thing to say next

2

u/ablonde_moment 1h ago

Try playing hangman with ChatGPT. It literally cannot lol

2

u/guru2764 1h ago

The free consumer model definitely not since it won't write code to figure it out

Whenever I see a funny AI response online and feel bothered to try it myself I can never seem to recreate it. But the Duckduckgo AI didn't do any better, in fact it's mashing together many different incorrect answers:

The answer is "money." A man has two "o's," a king has four "o's," and a beggar has none.

A man has two "o's" in the word "two."

A king has four "o's" in the word "four."

A beggar has none, as there are no "o's" in the word "none."

Thus, the answer is "money," as it cleverly plays on the number of "o's" in the respective words.

I've heard the riddle as; what walks on four at birth (as you use your hands and legs to crawl), two in middle age, and three when old(as you use a cane as a third leg) with the answer being humans.

The king riddle always got me as a weird one as it doesn't have one definitive answer

2

u/totally_not_a_zombie 49m ago

It's obviously pairs of shoes.

Beggar has no shoes. A man has shoes for field work and shoes for civil work, and a king has one pair for coronation, one for wedding, one pair of paw shoes to do steppies on his boyfriend in, and funeral shoes.

3

u/TheFlightlessPenguin 3h ago

No no, it’s this: the king rules over the north, South, east, and west. The man rules himself and his family. The beggar is unruled and unruly.

King has four legs because he sits on his ass all day and his chair has four legs

The answer is that there is no answer. It's a fake riddle designed to look like the Sphinx's riddle in order to confuse people.

None of the proposed answers I've ever seen for this make sense.

Some say it's suits, but a man can have more than two suits.

Some say it's legs, but a man also sits on plenty of chairs with four legs, and most beggars have two legs.

Some say it's movement options in checkers, but "there is no beggar piece, so 0" is dumb. Then the riddle might as well be "A king has four, a man has two, and a 1996 Chevy Impala has zero. What is it?"

3

u/PM_ME_ENGINE_BELLS 1h ago

Obviously the answer to that one is wheels. A king has four wheels, a man has two wheels, and a 1996 Chevy Impala has zero wheels.

The ACTUAL answer to this riddle is legs. A man has two legs to stand on as he works all day for the king. The king has four legs because hes sitting on his throne (which has four legs), the beggar has "no leg to stand on" as he is poor with nothing going for him.

Asking AI anything at this point is just like asking your drunk uncle, you really don't know if you can trust what he is saying but ok...

AI crowd sourced the riddle from Reddit. Where?

A man has 2 rocks glued together to eat. A king has 4 glued rocks to eat. A beggar has no rocks to eat.

What’s crazy is we’re like “oh shit ai is gonna take over the world” and then that same ai we’re afraid of can’t say a fucking 1st grade level riddle right.

What's actually crazy is that you don't know the difference between the shit Google runs for free on every search and the frontier models that people are actually concerned about.

AI is not a singular piece of technology that's all the same thing when you talk to it. You have cheap pieces of shit that are run in cost efficiency mode, vs the most advanced models that are given lots of compute.

I'm not trying to be pro AI or whatever but it's just not the right comparison to look at the garbage Google shits out on every web search and conclude that's all there is to it.

This post is showing the output of a very simple model by modern standards. This thing isn't taking anyone's job--except maybe yours. There are far more powerful AI systems out there.

AI looks like it's really smart, maybe even "superior intelligence" if you're really dumb.

its love

a man loves his mother and his wife

a king loves his 4 courtesans

a beggar doesn't have anyone to love
