Survey Post Monthly Survey Post - Post your surveys and research participant requests here!

We get an unbelievable amount of requests and attempts to post surveys, research studies, university projects, and more. Historically, the mod team has taken the position that the members of this subreddit are not lab rats or research subjects, and have removed these posts.

We're trying something new. In this post and this post only we are allowing requests to be posted so that the community members can choose whether they want to participate in any studies or surveys. We are establishing the following rules, which are subject to change at any time:

Rules For Surveys:

  • Genuine research and interest studies only - your survey must be linked back to a university, college, foundation, business, studio, or other entity. You are not allowed to just come up with a survey "for fun" or to satisfy your personal curiosity.

  • You must post your entire pitch as a top-level comment under this post. That comment must have a link to your survey, do not ask for respondents to comment or DM you to get the link. Do not use URL shorteners or obfuscators - you must link directly to your survey.

  • You must clearly and completely state the intent of the survey and how the responses will be used. If your survey benefits a for-profit enterprise, such as a game development studio (yes, even if your game will be free), you must disclose that in the very first line of your comment.

  • Failure to abide by these rules, using bait-and-switch tactics, or posting poorly-constructed, misleading, or disingenuous surveys will result in an immediate ban from this subreddit. If your research is connected to an official institution, I will find and contact your professor or boss to let them know you screwed up. I am absolutely that petty.

  • Respond to all questions and comments under your survey link, publicly, in a timely manner. If people are asking you questions and you do not answer them promptly, your request will be removed and you may lose posting privileges altogether.

Reminder To Users:

  • Participation in any study/survey is entirely voluntary and none of these links are approved or endorsed by the mod team or reddit. You may withdraw your participation at any time, and we encourage you to do so if something doesn't "pass the smell test."

  • Do not enter your personal information on any survey or provide this information to any user unless you have absolutely, positively verified and validated who you are giving this information to. Never enter your password, credit card, or banking information on any survey. If a survey requires that you create an account, use a unique password that is not the same as or similar to a password for any other account you have.

  • Report any surveys that are suspicious or which you think do not abide by the above rules.

Discussion Color Blind Options in Games and Character Creators

Hi! So as a color blind person, color blind options in video games really don't do anything for me, especially if they're just like a hue shift. My biggest gripe is with character creators!! I love playing WoW and I was very into Tomodachi life when it came out, and those games can be horrible for color blind people. My biggest issue when it comes to my color blindness is confidence in what I'm looking at. I tend to second guess myself and I'm never really sure that I'm choosing the right color. It's infuriating that these games don't at least have a little popup that gives you a name for each color if you hover over them or something that way I don't have to spend time looking for a guide online to find out the color. This seems like such an easy thing to implement and would be something everybody would benefit from. Do you guys know any other games that have this problem or are good about color blind options? Do you think there are any other solutions?

Discussion Grayscale after sunbathing?

I grew up with this phenomenon and didn't realize that other people either didn't experience this, or had it happen on such a small scale that they didn't take notice of it. I'm talking about the visual experience that occurs after sunbathing, specifically having your eyes pointed towards the sun, of course with your eyelids closed, for a little while. My immediate experience after opening my eyes again is a literal grayscale of my vision. The longer I stay in that position, the "grayer" and longer the effect stays. After a few minutes the colors all come back.

Is this a common experience in the colorblind community? I assume this is caused by the lower levels of cone cells in the eye? So a correlation would occur with colorblindness.

Discussion My wife thinks being colorblind contributed to my depression.

She says just the colors of the world on a nice day can make her feel really happy. Like the leaves changing colors or just a clear blue sky. It made me wonder if there is a correlation between colorblindness and depression. Like she’s living in a cartoon while I’m in some dramatic film noir. I don’t know. Just an interesting thought I figured I would leave to hear what others think

Question/Need help Should I keep constantly telling my colorblind kids when they misname colors?

I have two boys- the 4 YO is definitely red/green colorblind and I have strong suspicions about the 2 YO also being red/green colorblind.

Something like this happens basically multiple times every day: him, “mom can you hand me that pink Lego?” Me: “sure, but just so you know, i see this as light grey.” You get the idea.

My thought process in “correcting” him is that he should learn what his tricky colors are just for his own awareness. But now I’m wondering if this is even worth it at all. Should I just let it go and give him the thing or whatever- 99% of the time I know what he means. He doesn’t seem annoyed by it for now.

Any thoughts? Do you appreciate when someone tells you they see the color differently than you or is it just annoying?

Not sure how easy it is for people with normal color vision to spot the red window, but it’s definitely impossible for me.

Question/Need help Do color blind people need special coloring books/paints?

Hey everyone. I have a website that helps creating custom paintings by numbers. One person left me an anonymous feedback that sometimes they struggle with paintings because they are red/green color blind.

I can't ask them directly as it was anonymous but it made me wonder if different kind of color blindness require different kind of adjustments when we talk about coloring by numbers and painting in general.

Is there anything specific you wish was different for you in coloring books/ paint by number kits?

Question/Need help Enchroma glasses for a nurse

Hi reddit! I do have protonomaly and I've been working as a nurse for over five years. The last two years I've been working in the ED. I do have a hard time seeing if a patient is pale, have redness of skin, cyanosis etc so I have to rely on colleagues and other measurements to determine how sick the patient is.

I know that Enchroma doesn't do anything to fix colorblindness, that's why I haven't got them before. But I'm wondering if anyone has any experience using them as a tool to see certain shades of colors more clearly. For me, if they helped me see changes in skin color better they might prove to be useful for me.

I've searched for peer reviewed articles on the subject and found that there aren't many studies on the subject. The few studies I've found tells me that they might have a positive effect to help differentiate between colors better but with a low certainly.

So anyone in healthcare or any other field that finds them useful?

Question/Need help Can we actually know that everyone sees colors the same way?

Okay, this has been bothering me because I genuinely cannot stop thinking about it 😭

How do we actually know that the red I see is the same red that you see?

Like, imagine I look at a tomato and call it “red.” You look at the exact same tomato and also call it “red.” We both learned that that color is called red, so obviously we agree on the name.

But how do we know our eyes and brains are actually experiencing the same color?

Maybe my eyes respond to that light slightly differently from yours. Maybe what I experience as “red” isn't exactly what you experience as “red,” but we would never know because we've both been taught to use the same word for it.

And here's where my brain went even further:

What if humans all experience colors differently, but we don't realize it because we name colors based on the objects we see?

For example, maybe we all look at a tomato and learn “that's red,” but the actual experience happening inside each person's mind could be different. We could all have different versions of what “red” feels like while still agreeing that tomatoes are red.

So I started thinking: could we test this?

Maybe we could create some kind of “impossible color machine” that exposes people to precisely controlled wavelengths of light and measures how their retinas respond. We could test lots of people and compare their responses across the colors of the visible spectrum.

If everyone's eyes and neural responses were extremely similar, that would give us evidence that our color perception is biologically similar.

BUT then there's another problem.

Even if we found that everyone's brains responded exactly the same way, how would we prove that the subjective experience is identical?

How do we measure what “seeing red” actually feels like from inside someone's consciousness?

I don't know enough neuroscience to answer this, which is why I'm asking Reddit.

Is this already something scientists have tested? And if so, what can experiments actually tell us about whether two people experience the same color?

Because I came up with this at night and now my brain refuses to let me sleep until I know 😭

Discussion How colorblind people view colors

Post image
7 Upvotes

To preface, I have moderate to strong protanopia, and color has been a strong interested of mine for years. One of these interest include how do the colors I perceive, look to other people.

Using a colorblind simulating app, and my friends, I have made some discoveries.

For an example, when I see a hot pink shirt, I can recognize that that shirt is hot pink. The two example photos look the exact same to me, but my friends see the bottom image as a muted dusty lavender/purple. So what I see as hot pink is what purple looks like.

Here are some more comparisons I’ve learned

- My orange = other people’s yellow & amber

- My red = rusty browns and coppers

- My baby pink = blue and occasionally grey

- My Tiffany blue = a off white, grey

Now I just wish there was a way to do the opposite but unfortunately, a true red will always be outside of my comprehension I fear. :(

Discussion LSD and color?

Have any of you done LSD, and if so, did you see enhanced colors? I have full color vision and I saw colors that don't exist, so I'm curious about the experience of color blind people. Hope this isn't offensive to ask!
