New gen player.

Hello fellow wastelanders.
I have played fallout new vegas not so long ago and absolutely adored it. I wanted more but unfortunately fallout 4 falls under the AAA category of games for me and since I dislike triple A games because theyre boring and are just glorified movies (in my oppinion) I didnt play it. I moved to the youtube side of fallout and the content there is very good. Many fallout content creators praise fallout 1 and 2 as being what the fallout franchise is all about. This prompted me to try out the first game and.....

I'm really sorry but I hate it.
Im gonna make a list of things I like and dislike that I have discovered:

  1. I hate the movement. Both actions and movement are tied to the mouse which is weird for me and feels really clunky and slow.

  2. Combat is slow, methodical and I quite like it. It is a bit rng based which is like... ehh... dropping my pistol because of a critical failure and not realising I dropped and where I dropped was a nice experience seeing as it was my first encounter outside the vault cave.

  3. The "Tell me about" option is really cool and I love it, however me being illiterate its difficult to know what to ask NPCs as most things I ask yield no response. I did figure out some things, but I assume later on I will figure out what to ask of NPCs.

  4. Barter is pretty neat. I did sort of trade all my radscorpion tails for nothing because I thought NPCs just gave you money for things you give them (Like NV).

Essentially, the game is very outdated for my tastes which is understandable because the game is old BUT I feel inclined to play more because of the mystery and gloomy atmosphere. Also many things confuse me. An NPC asked me to rid shady sands of scorpions which I somehow managed to do and now I have no clue how to collect my reward if there is any. Aradesh treats as if I have not done anything yet.

If you could offer any tips for a new player like me, please let me know because so far many things left me confused because of how used I was to how things worked in other games.

The only triple A games I enjoyed were dark souls 1&2 and elden ring. I always gravitated towards pixel arty games. Terraria, hitline miami and isaac are some of my favorites. Tried horizon forbidden west and borderlands which I found very boring. But yeah, the old retro games may not be for me.

I think you won't like any of the really good older ones man sorry. You got to adapt to what the game offers and see it's strengths for what they are in order to appreciate them

But hey the classic RPG is still alive with many titles out there besides fallout that might scratch the itch. Maybe xcom is more your style

It is a bit sad to hear that i wont like the older titles since the story intrigues me already. I was told about the master who is the main villain and it makes me want to find them. Also, hearing the track playing in the caves can also be heard in new vegas. Whenever it would play it made me wanna get out of places real fast because of how ominous it felt.

Ignore these people. You sound like you're doing fine. Just keep pushing forward and the game will click. You obviously seem to have interest in the game, don't let anyone tell you you're too young or aren't capable of enjoying it. That's some stupid gatekeeping nonsense that doesn't serve anything but strangers' egos.

I would recommend you look at the game manual, which you can find on Steam / GoG, or just search on the internet. Now that you've hit your head on the game a little bit, it should help out.

If you've read up on the manual and still have questions, there's PLENTY of videos orienting new players to the classics.

I just can't believe people are in here acting like Fallout 1 & 2 are beyond you. Don't listen to them. It's just video games for crying out loud. If the story is interesting enough to keep you playing, that's all you need.

Good luck, have fun with Fallout 1 and/or 2.

I absolutely agree with the other guy, people are being stupidly gatekeepy and clearly didn't even read your post, since when you parse it out your actual issues with the game are nothing but the common strangesness of a new gameplay genre.

  1. I hate the movement. (You will become really fast after your brain got wired to it)

  2. Combat is slow, methodical and I quite like it. (The fun is that your stats really do matter an can help you to sway the rng more in your way)

  3. The "Tell me about" option is really cool and I love it. (You are absolutely right this feature could have been much more usable and this needs an update)

  4. Barter is pretty neat. (You have to put money on the other side of the table an you will get your compensation)

Doesnt sound that bad overall. I am happy you tried it and like others point out. Fallout 2 has more quality of life updates. For Fallout 1 you could use the é tu mod to get those quality in Fallout 1.

Good luck for the next one!

Save to a new or irrelevant save slot if you enter combat with anyone holding an automatic rifle/SMG. The combat in this game is really swingy and if someone attacks using the full auto option, the differences in damage rolls are in the hundreds, so you may find yourself getting oneshot randomly.

Be careful with putting points into energy weapons or big guns as for a new player, those may be really hard to come across in the early game

Armor piercing ammo is strictly worse than other damage types because of how the combat math works. Basically you get more armor penetration but the damage is too low for it to effectively do more damage against armored enemies, so it always does less damage against unarmored enemeis and less damage against armored enemies, making it really really bad

Radiation and Poison damage is tracked in a really "stealthy" way, so always check your status and potentially reload an earlier save if you're heavily poisoned or irradiated because you may just die randomly on the map from the poisoning without getting much of a chance to do anything about it.

You can use the doctor and first aid skills to heal yourself for """free""", though it does take a lot of time and you will likely get a lot of failed checks if you don't have points in the skills.

there is a button to highlight items on the ground, i believe it was tab but am not 100% sure about it. Use it since there's a bunch of stuff scattered around the dungeons of this game.

You can cheese a lot of enemies by aiming for specific body parts and getting crits that debilitate them.

This game has an incredible atmosphere and interesting writing and characters, but in a lot of ways it has not aged well and in terms of combat it's arguable it may not have been good even back then. The combat is really swingy and RNG can make or break it. As such I do reccomend you save often and keep multiple save files active. I do hope you continue playing as IMO the game really opens up and gets settled in as you go to the first couple of towns post-Shady Sands. Good luck and have fun!

Multiple save files is both for a ‘ooh, bad thing happened’ and ‘save got corrupted’

complaining about combat being rng based is a noob complaint

as soon as you reach level 3 you can increase ur gun skill to 100% and you'll never miss again

2

u/Greedy-One-9471 6h ago

I dont really care about the rng based mechanic, i just think its a bit ridiculous to have a 60% chance to hit a giant scorpion that is right in your face. Got my first level up and accuracy went up to 80% which feels a lot better.

u/nroloa 5h ago

In real life, inexperienced shooters often have a tendency to preemptively close their eyes and begin "compensating" for recoil by pushing the gun down even before actually pulling the trigger so they might actually miss even a giant scorpion right in front of them.

That's not totally ridiculous... inexperienced people tend to suck at things and level 1 RPG characters also tend to suck at things.

It can make early game frustrating, but your character is not some spec ops veteran on yet another mission but somebody who was given just some three-day crash course and then was pushed out of the door as a hail mary move by the vault. Try to think of it like that.

Good job for leveling up and increasing the right stats at that. Keep playing. Maybe your opinion of the game will change soon. For me personally i started loving the game when i was halfway through at the part where you encounter the brotherhood and i became obsessed.

Yeah, but there’s a game design critique to be made there sure.

Pro tip: don't set Luck to 1 lol

Reminds me of the time I played the original Mario games and had to deal with 2d graphics. It made me so upset.

u/Jr_Mao 5h ago

Tell me about was a cool idea but its not really properly implemented in the game. I’m not sure if theres anything ever you can ask that way thats not available in normal dialogue also.

Aradesh and others should recognize you’ve dealt with the scorpions, but thats dialogue only. And xp that scrolls away real fast in the action log.

General tips:
Save often and keep multiple saves, at least one from previous location. You might end up in a situation like the scorpion cave but worse and only later realize you’re lethally poisoned.

Talk to everybody and read the dialogue. You aint ever going to get a quest that says ”go here for the water chip”. You mostly get a vague hint in dialogue.

The doctor in shady sands wants radscorpion bits to make antidote. He’ll give you some too.

Theres several possible companions. one in shady sands.

Thanks for the advice about saving, appreciate it. In regards to "tell me about" yeah it may be vague and it doesnt offer much extra info but i like that its there. Makes it feel like the npcs are more than just npcs that give you quests or progress the story. Nice touch by the devs and a system i dont see in many games.

1

u/nroloa 5h ago

It was a system used in like old adventure and RPG games in the 80s and early 90s when the graphics were still pretty basic and they had to rely mostly on textual rather than visual storytelling.

The NPCs and narrator would throw you various keywords you could ask about. Fallout 1 planned to still use the feature but they mostly abandoned the idea during development so it's not super useful (it can provide some extra lore tidbits and there was like one little side quest in Shady Sands that could be completed through it if it failed to trigger through normal dialogue). They completely cut it out from Fallout 2.

The mouse point and clik to act or move, is also from the same adventure games "point and clikc adventures" of the time. BTW, try monkey island, it's great.

Check out the Nearly Ultimate Fallout Guide.
It has everything you could want as a newcomer. It can really help with your play through. I personally love the charm of older games and the freedom but to each their own.

now I have no clue how to collect my reward if there is any.

He asked you for help and you did, he never mentioned a reward so don't expect one

1

u/Greedy-One-9471 5h ago

Its not that i expected a reward, more so i was expecting him to acknowledge the fact that I did them a favor. I killed all the scorpions but he still thought that i didnt. I made a new character and did it again and now he does thank me for contribution. Maybe i just missed one or two scorpions.

3

u/nroloa 5h ago

I think there should be 9 scorpions in the cave so you can check your kill list in Pip boy to see if it has 9+ scorps in there.

There is also an alternate solution. SPOILER AHEAD: If you use the "examine" option on one section near the cave entrance, it tells you the stone looks weak. If you have an explosive, you can set the timer, put the explosive on the ground at that section and when it explodes it creates a cave-in sealing the scorpions in. You can also go in, kill the scorpions for exp and then blow up the cave entrance for even more exp.

I don't think there is a monetary reward. You get experience and positive karma.

Spam multiple saves, read up on some of the best builds, install recommended patches, and accept that older games were harder and quirky. Im almost 40 and love old and new (including AAA) games and if you have patience you should get through it

u/flayman22 4h ago

It doesn't sound like you hate it. You've described one thing that you hate and several other things that you like or even love. Stick with it. You might be pleasantly surprised.

Fallout 4 is good but you need mods - then it becomes my fav game.

However you have to accept to spend more time modding and testing  than playing.

In Fallout 2 I'd increase the base game speed as the OG is slow by today's standards, kind of like OG Doom is easy by today's FPS standards

In ddraw.ini, set SpeedMultiInitial=150

TBH, other than the movement these doesn't sound like such bad issues with the game. I'd bet all my money this is your first isometric game, otherwise your n°1 issue wouldn't be an issue. I'd say you stick with it, there's tons of games out there that use this same basic movement schema. You don't remember now, but there was a time when moving your character's head in POV with your mouse for an FPS, or aiming the camera for 3rd person with a joystick uncoupled from left stick movement was just as alienating and weird as moving characters with clicking is. I'd say stick with it because once these thigns click it's not just fallout 1 and 2, but the doors to tons of other games will be open as well.

Make sure you're using the latest fallout et tu, it comes with a bunch of quality of life features. One of them being that holding shift will highlight items on the ground, so you don't have to pixel hunt. Also, if you're having such criticals that your gun falls out (lol) take a look at a few character guides to explain how the SPECIAL system works.

Try Fallout 2 (Restoration project). But yeah, You're too young for this my man.. If I was in my 20s today and had never played Fallout 1/2 I probably wouldn't like it either. I'm 40 and my favourite games are all from the 90s, because that's what I played as a kid. I actually can't stand modern games. Maybe I'm old and ignorant, sure, and it's alot to do with nostalgia. The most modern game I play or have played is Left 4 Dead 2 (2009). I prefer the feel and gameplay of the old stone age games. actually the only games I play are only games I played as a kid. I do re-plays of stuff like Fallout 2, Heroes of Might and magic 3, Might and Magic 6, Nox, Diablo 1, CS 1.6, Civilization 1, Warcraft 1(orcs and humans)!! I fell of the wagon when world of warcraft showed up. Didn't get it. World of warcraft is not warcraft (1&2), fallout 3 and so on is not fallout(1&2).. sorry about the rant/ramble.. I guess I'm just an old man and that's why I like 90s games more.

u/Greedy-One-9471 5h ago

I think if I had experienced the same games that you did as a kid I would have loved them. I love the older graphics and pace of games. Left 4 dead 2 felt a bit too chaotic for me and i feel right at home playing "no more room on hell". Dark souls offers a calculative and methodical approach to combat which i really like. By the way, diablo 2 is 100% on my to do list.

Dont know if this explains anything about me but I preferred half life 1 over half life 2 both gameplay and graphics wise. I forgot to mention but my sudden interest in fallout is likely because of "Fear and hunger" which really felt brutal in its nature and I heard that fallout doesnt pull any punches when it comes to the gritty and dark tone and violence.

Most people who glaze fallout 1 and 2 wearing rose tinted nostalgia glasses. That's just truth lol. The classic games are old, clunky with trash combat/builds. New Vegas is undoubtedly the best fallout game when it comes to almost everything and its not even close..
Anyways just remember to spec into agility, spec into energy weapon(for first game, small guns for second) and do get the power armour in the first game because without it the game becomes insufferable especially if its your first time with it. Also save regularly because you will never know when you get boxed in by NPCs and get stuck... or getting randomly 1 shot even in the end game due to getting critical hit by a random mob.

And yes before anyone asks, I finished both the games with almost 0 googling(except Mariposa base forcefield part and 'accessing' the secret door in basement.. both of which are genuine bull shit)
