I was playing Russia on pangea I spawned on the west coast with large desert with a lot of mountains to my east. In the middle of that desert in the middle of some mountains was this city state. By the way, they stayed at 2 pop the whole game.

This isn't a discussion about a new meta strategy, but a question about does the math math as they say. Specifically I've been using the Gaia mod emperor difficulty which removes the AI starting bonuses (game mechanics are unchanged, AI gets scaling discounts as time progresses) and I've noticed the AI was making settlers about 10+ turns earlier than me waiting for 3-4 pop. I decided to try 2 pop for myself using a worker as my first build, mining as the first tech, settler at 2 pop (if a ruin gives me 3 pop that's just a bonus), then shrine after the first settler is out. Playing a few games now to test and honestly it seems to work better than waiting for 3 or 4 pop because you can lock two mining tiles thanks to the early worker. If you started on a hill that's 8 production per turn and produces a settler in around 12 turns. I don't play with barbarians so that's an important caveat, I also use a starting scout instead of a warrior mod but that doesn't change the strategy since we aren't worker stealing right away (if ever). Since you built a worker first you are able to improve the luxury tiles and not run out of happiness. By the time you transition to your third settler you should start seeing workers in city states that you can steal. So worker->settler->shrine->settler->steal worker?->granary. If the land is good do a third settler instead of granary, otherwise I might consider taking a capital as my 4th in which case I do an aggressive forward settle to set them up. With this timing you have NC finished by T90 and 1-2 key wonders and either 4 cities or 3 plus an army actively taking a capital. In either case the game is already decided so it comes down to optimizing your time to win

My last few games I have had city states ruin settlement placements due to the city state growing 4 tiles outside of their city to claim a luxury. Both were in the classical era so I never had enough time to settle these luxuries.
I've tried to find something on the steam mod workshop but haven't been able to find a solution yet.

Hey so sorry if this is already known, but I'm just struggling to understand how Spies 'know' the intended target of an attack. Like it would make sense for an AI player, as maybe there's like some invisible target that AI spies can read and send as intelligence, but what about multi-player games? Wouldn't the ai just see an army being built, not knowing the intention behind it?
Tbh I've never played multi-player so I actually dont know if they send intelligence like that to other human players but then that seems like an unfair advantage to humans (and lord knows we don't need more lol)

I wanted to incentivize players to build more Forts, so here's a Fort replacement mod that's now be released over on CivFanatics.
It adds +1 Faith to Forts, +1 Faith if adjacent to Rivers, and another +1 Faith if built on top of a Hill. Only buildable within your territory, and I kept the 50% defensive bonus regular Forts have.
Here's the mod over on CivFanatics!

Update: It's now on the Steam Workshop too! https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3819725389

I've played Civ V on my Mac for a few years, and every so often the game would crash when a civ recaptured its capital. It was super frustrating and ruined about 1 in 10 of my games. I looked for a fix more than once but never found one that worked. The only workaround was reloading an earlier save and hoping things played out differently the next time.
I got Claude + REA this to tracked down the cause and made a patch for it: https://github.com/jtutlis/civ5-mac-capital-crash-fix
This isn't a mod since it would disable achievements, it just patches your game binary. Hope this helps someone

Summary
I finally got a deity win with Pachacuti! 202 turns - probably could have pushed it to under 200 if I was playing a bit slower and more carefully but I wanted to get in a quick game tonight. This game was notable mostly because of great land, quick settles, and huge growth. The main river that fed three of my cities, including Cusco, was the true hero of this game. Some decent terrace farms in Tiwanaku, but nothing too crazy.
Snagging both Uluru and Mt Sinai was nice, but ultimately I decided not to push my religion too hard. I generated two prophets and ended up faith-purchasing two scientists as well.
One big decision came around ideologies when there was no coal in my lands and none available to trade. With such a fast start, I really wanted to keep pushing my advantage and take over the game, so I decided to use Oxford early to push into Rationalism to try and get the first Freedom bonus. I ended up being beat to Freedom by one turn and only getting one free policy, but it was probably still the right move .Typically I would save Oxford for the end of the game to grab one of the final two techs for free.
Other than that it was really just a game of pushing my cap as far as it could go. I ended up getting Cristo Redentor, which is a first for a deity game. My end game timing was a bit off, so I purchased Spaceship Factories in all of my cities instead of purchasing the final spaceship part. Still rusty on that super efficient end game, but it will come back.
Pachacuti is one of my absolute favorite leaders to play, glad to finally get the win!

R5: just the average religion experience on Deity. Nothing to see here.
Outside the view of this picture is at least another 3 great prophets near my capital. I love Deity so much 🙂😭

Strategies on how to take down civs that have the Great Wall without waiting until Artillery and Tanks. I tried just battering England with warriors and archers but once Elizabeth got longbowmen I had to back off.
When playing as Persia I just initiate a Golden Age and basically ignore the Great Wall but am playing as Japan so can’t do that unfortunately.

I'm playing as the Inca, captured Mumbai from Gandhi in order to spread my prosperity--do I get the benefits of the Great Wall in my territory?
Also how the fuck did he do that

I am frequently in games where the AI will have 0 or close to 0 gold saved. They will also be losing gold, sometimes as high as 4-500 per turn with 0 in the bank. Yet at the same time, they are maintaining massive armies and are gifting gold to city states. Do economics not apply to them?
I know they can do missions for city states, but this is way outpacing that. No gunboat diplomacy either.
No mods.
Edit: In the game I am playing right now, the AI has 0 gold, and is losing -60 per turn. I spent 750 to buy 20 more influence than them on a city state and they flip it back the very next turn.

no mountain cities but huge map means lots of ruins. Started by building like 3 pathfinders + purchase 1 or 2. must've got at least 10 ruins
spawed with Hiawatha next to me and this mf planted so many cities (20+), his science was insane all game. Only got 1 wonder, that too with great engineer. He was still like 4-5 techs ahead of me after bulbing scientists post labs
to stop the science win, attacked and razed his biggest cities with paratroopers + rocket artillery + bombers. then teched into xcom + stealth bombers
put spies in capitals and focused on just taking capitals when possible. surrounded captured cities with xcom to defend
tradition + rationalism + commerce + autocracy
biggest mistake: no coastals so no Prora, which is a lot of happiness that you need taking this many cities
huge, deity, pangea, low sea level, legendary start

First try at creating a single city with the largest population possible within 500 turns. No mods, any civ, any map.

Hello Civ Fans,
Four months ago I posted my fastest deity victory ever here and got a lot of great feedback. I ended up taking a small break from the game and then getting a string of tough games when I did come back, but I am now happy to share my game from tonight - my slowest deity victory ever! Writeup below!

Summary:
Boudicca is the next to take to the stars in a rough 228 turn game. I believe this is my slowest ever deity win, although I did not take a screenshot of my first win, which was with the Shoshone. This game had real potential to be a solid 190 or even lower, but my own fatigue and rusty gameplay stood in the way.
Despite radaring, I lost an early settler near Seville to a barb camp (I'm not even 100% radaring works in SP BNW, maybe someone on reddit will inform me). That mistake alone set me back quite a bit as Isabella swooped in and settled Seville. My two early archers thought they could recapture my Settler, and I foolishly trusted them - waiting 3 turns to start retraining a new Settler. Even with the lost time, I decided the land was so good I would push for 5 cities. This is something I almost never do because it significantly delays your National College and makes early happiness very difficult, but I wanted to try it because theoretically another city would generate more science and more scientists for the endgame.
Nantes was the final city planted, and I'm still not sure if the benefits outweighed the costs. I ended up finishing a National College around turn 75, which is at least 15-20 turns slower than what I typically aim for in a fast game.
The 5 cities did allow me to catch up around ideologies. Pacal was first to take Freedom, which was unfortunate because I lost a free policy, but it was helpful to have a cultural leader in the same ideology for a change.
In addition to the early game mistakes, there were some key misplays and lessons from this game:
First, I did generate a lot of great scientists from my 5 cities. So much so that I started bulbing them too late and ended up finishing all of spaceship tech before even completing my first spaceship part! When I'm more efficient I end up able to purchase the last piece on the same turn I complete the tech.
Second, the extra scientists threw off my typical engineer timing. I usually try to naturally generate or purchase one engineer in time for Hubble Telescope, but I wasn't checking as diligently as I should, and didn't realize the extra scientists had pushed my engineer back. I even pointlessly faith-purchased a scientist two turns before finishing the tech for no reason! Next time I will wait on faith-purchasing until I an ready to bulb.
Third, I was unprepared for a war with China, although it turned out to be nothing serious, I could have easily lost Dublin had the AI thought to bring a unit that can capture cities...
However I would say my biggest mistake was not immediately rerolling when I saw a Celtic start without any forest next to my Edinburgh! I have always enjoyed Celts and attempted to score a deity victory with them in the past. I'm amazed that the first time I manage it is a game where I do not even get a pantheon, let alone a religion.

Been recently trying to get back into Civ 5 and have been coming up with this error. I've tried enumerable fixes, such as redownloading the redistributable, verifying files, running as admin, etc. When I restart my computer, the game gives me one free Directx9 launch but displays this message afterwards. No Dx11 or 12 for me either.

I recently created a custom map for my friends and I to play on and whilst testing it I noticed that it will spawn me in the same location every time. I currently have 12 “random player spawns” scattered around the map and have already tried to make it a scenario and set a specific spawn as another thread suggested. That however did not work either as I still spawned in the same location. No matter the civ I play I spawn in the same location even if the start bias is polar opposite. Any help or advice would be much appreciated!
Thank you!
