Cold-weather gear

Relatively new to road biking and wonder what people think is the most useful piece of cold-weather clothing is for the bike? I’m willing to endure a little discomfort to avoid spending endlessly. Is there one thing people really like?

Good Stand Up Comedy this Saturday at the Comet with Dan Alten (me) on 15 night tour. I'm not famous but I promise I'm good at stand up and it'll be a fun time, if not you can toss me into the river and back down to Louisville. Ride your bike to the show and i'll give you some free merch.

Here's my bio, sorry it's in the third person: Dan Alten is a charming goofball from Kentucky who has been traveling the country for the past decade doing about 200 shows a year bringing his intelligently surreal bebop nonsense everywhere from theaters to punk basements to art galleries to beloved comedy clubs with a knack for making audiences feel like they're on a good psychedelic trip without the drugs. Like if the Ramones were one guy with a mustache and good jokes. Iggy Pop with puns. Clever chaos. Like Jimi Hendrix lighting fire to a Tik Tok reel live on stage. He has opened for Kyle Kinane, Bobcat, Sam Tallent, Rory Scovel, Sarah Sherman from SNL, Johnny Pemberton, Hari Kondabolu, rapper Open Mike Eagle, DJ Doug Pound & David Leibe Hart from Tim & Eric, various punk bands with silly names, and a guy at an open mic who tried to throw his father’s ashes into the crowd. He has recorded 2 albums, written a zine, and filmed a pilot for an Amazon Prime stand up show that was lost to history. But most importantly he’s very funny and unique. You will enjoy him. And if not you can mud wrestle him after the show.

Biking downtown from LMBT

Hi everyone, and sorry for making this kind of post that I know can be kind of annoying. What's the current status of Eastern/Riverside? Planning to do some bike commuting to my job downtown via the Little Miami, Lunken connection, and Riverside. I know there was some significant construction going on in the summer.

Free Bike Parking Map/App - Help fill the map!

Thumbnail
apps.apple.com

I wanted to share this here as it appears Cincinnati could use some help in filling in the map for this app and I think it could be a great resource for cyclists in my hometown of Cincy. The developer does appear to listen to and incorporate suggestions from users so feel free to reach out to them. The app is available for Apple and Android.

“I’ve been wanting to commute more via bike around Dayton and take advantage of the growing cycling infrastructure but I’m never sure if a place has a spot to park and secure bikes. This free app solves that problem. It’s community-driven. If you find a location that has bike racks you can take a picture and select which type of bike rack there is from a drop-down menu. You can even leave some notes. Then you just hit submit and there it is on the map. It looks like not many people know about it so there isn’t a ton of info here yet but I figure I would share this and hopefully some people will give it a try. Maybe we can fill the map in for Dayton and the surrounding areas together.”

Bramble Park Shared-Use Path bid

Thumbnail

After first being announced 6 years ago, the shared-use path through Bramble Park is finally out to bid by the city. The specific routing was chosen by Cincinnati Parks to avoid damaging existing mature trees. The incline up the hill will have 5 foot long flat landings, 9 in total, every 30 feet. That is being done to make sure it is still ADA compliant as the rest of the slope will get up to 8.33 degrees.

will function as a spur of the CROWN/Murray Trail, and hopefully the first step in making a formal trail through the Little Duck Creek Nature Preserve.

Upcoming bike infrastructure funding by OKI

On Thursday, OKI's Board of Directors will be voting to approve their allotment of annual Federal funding. There are 7 projects that have specific bike infrastructure as part of them, with 5 of them being shared-use paths. I did not upload the 7th project as it was more money for an already existing project, the replacement for the WHV.

Additionally, they will be awarding 2 grants to Red Bike, one for each side of the river, to replace old stations, and expand into NKY:

Targeted expansion of stations into emerging redevelopment areas and mixed-use growth districts.

The city's page for the proposed extension of the Murray Trail has been updated with the current design of the project, as well as recent crash data and the feedback they received from the initial survey.

There is a comment box at the bottom, which will close on Friday, October 30th.

Stencils and other art supplies from indigo hippo and scrap it up

Metal scraps from local bike shops, scrap yards, scavanged stuff/donated by friends

Money mostly spent on welding stuff and spray paint

Any other spots that could use a scrappy rack? (Donated) I plan on dropping some by the benches on the bike paths i ride. If anyone has kitty litter buckets I need them 🙏

Open House: Erie Avenue & Murray Road Safety Improvements

Open house flyer for Erie Avenue & Murray Road Safety Improvement Project

The city is hosting an open house for a resurfacing project that would also function as an extension of the Murray Tail into East Hyde Park. If you can't make it, they typically post the drawings and layouts on their website after the meeting is over, along with a survey.

The meeting is on Tuesday evening at the Eastside Recreation Center in Oakley.

Friday morning Mason to Cincy and back

Grew up in the suburbs of Cincy but moved away. Always nice to come back and enjoy a ride downtown. I love how connected this trail is. It’s such a great resource for cyclists.

This was about 83 miles on the day, I forgot how flat it was, so you can cruise pretty easily. Enjoyed some Oktoberfest beers later on in the day - but I drove a car downtown afterwards instead.

Group rides, anyone?

Howdy, y'all! I'm a newer road cyclist, and have been getting deeper into this obsession day by day...I predominantly ride enduro and xc mtb, but have started spending a ton of time on my gravel bike and am looking into getting a dedicated road bike, as well! With the longer rides coming more frequently, and more seat time becoming a regular part of my life, I have lately been wanting to find a road or gravel group ride to join to make some friends in this hobby, and get to know my city a bit bettwr. I am just wondering if there is a good group here on reddit to join, or maybe local rides to look out for? I'm based in Mason fwiw, but usually have a bike on the roof of my car so not afraid to drive a bit to meet some good friends🙋‍♀️

Bike Light Rant

I guess bring on the downvotes, but someone needs to say it. "Your bike light is not a searchlight". We dont need to see it 3/4 of a mile out. If it's aimed straight out at eye level, you are not lighting the trail. You are blinding every single person coming the other way.

  1. If you think you might be one of these people, here's a useful link to adjust your light accordingly: https://www.bike.nyc/blog/news/winter-cycling-tips-six-steps-to-bike-light-etiquette-or-how-to-not-blind-and-enrage-oncoming-cyclists/

NBD!

My first new bike since 2009, and my first drop bar bike. I’m really looking forward to getting it out for the first good ride!

Breezer Inversion X Comp, I found it on sale at a shop in Oregon and had it shipped here. I called first and talked to a guy there for almost an hour to make sure the sizing would work for me. Obviously he made me feel good with the purchase without riding one. My 1 mile test ride felt great, but I may need a bit taller angle on the stem. I’ll have to get a few rides in first to see though. I’m really excited about it!!

Safe roads in the northern inner-belt and middle-belt suburbs

I'm just getting into this, and I'm slowly extending my range. As of now, Glendale and Wyoming are the two I've been travelling heavily. Slowly extending out to Evendale, Sharonville, and Reading.

What roads are the best options for riding on up in that area?

Shout out to the guy at the Blue Ash Trek shop

I was on my after work ride tonight and my crank was just creaking like nuts from the get-go. I know I'm pretty overdue for new bearings and stuff but I've just been putting it off because I'm fresh out of grad school with like no cash lol. Anyways I was up in Blue Ash and stopped by the Trek shop to see if I could buy some chain lube, I roll up to the shop and this dude is locking up, I tell him I just have a creaky crank/need chain lube and he brings me in and tightens up the crank after lubing the chain. Made my freaking night, crank and chain felt like butter all the way home.

Shout out to that guy, you rock!

Help learning how to repair flats, replacing tubes, etc?

My friend and I are casual riders but would like to become more confident and take longer trips (eventually doing some bike touring in Europe, etc) and we are not too proud to admit we just jump in the saddle with very limited knowledge of our bikes and what we’d need to know in an emergency or when the inevitable problem arises.

Are there classes or do any local bike shops offer private “lessons” on this stuff? I know we can go to YouTube but both of us learn better hands on.

(She showed up today for a long ride with a flat (happened between her home and arriving at the trail) and neither of us were prepared to do anything about it, so now is probably the second best time to learn :)

Little Miami Trail Closures

I'm sure somebody will fuss at me to look this up, but I've looked and seem to find mixed information, and I'm not from the immediate area. Is there a section of the trail that is closed around Lebanon? And if so, is there a way to navigate around it?

Early morning group rides near downtown

Does anyone know of any early morning group rides in or near downtown (like 6:30ish rollout)? Doesn’t matter the day - weekdays or weekends work for me. I try to get out before the family wakes up, but miss riding with others. I tried looking at the different club pages and couldn’t find any groups. Any insight would be appreciated!
